Sherdog Forums Chat Recap: Lorenz Larkin

Lorenz Larkin made the decision in March to jump from the Ultimate Fighting Championship to Bellator MMA , joining other fights like Phil Davis , Rory MacDonald , Matt Mitrione and Valerie Letourneau . The 30-year-old Riverside, California, native will challenge Douglas Lima for the welterweight championship in his promotional debut at Bellator 180 this Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. Larkin competed in multiple weight classes before settling in at 170 pounds. A failed encounter with Muhammed Lawal in 2012 prompted a move from light heavyweight to middleweight, and losses to Francis Carmont , Brad Tavares , Costas Philippou and Derek Brunson resulted in his decision to downshift to welterweight. Larkin has no regrets about the path he took. “I think everything happens for a reason,” he said in the latest installment of the Sherdog Forums Q&A series , “and if I didn’t go through everything, who knows, I might not be at welterweight.” The Millennia MMA export owns victories over former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler , “The Ultimate Fighter 16” semifinalist Neil Magny and two American Top Team reps: Jorge Masvidal and Santiago Ponzinibbio .

UFC Singapore Results: Rafael dos Anjos defeats Tarec Saffiedine | BJPenn.com

Round one begins and Saffiedine quickly takes the center of the octagon and fires off a head kick that just misses. He fires off another but it is blocked by dos Anjos. “RDA” comes forward and lands a hard kick to the body. Rafael circles and then fires off another kick but Tarec catches the strike and uses it to take dos Anjos to the floor. Saffiedine working from half guard but “RDA” locks in a kimura. The submission hold appears to be deep but Tarec is eventually able to escape. “RDA” scrambles and is able to get back up to his feet. The fighters trade some shots in the clinch before breaking. Dos Anjos presses forward and lands a hard kick to the body of Saffiedine. He presses Tarec against the fence and begins firing off some punches. He drops down and scores a nice double leg takedown. Tarec attempts an armbar. It is not there but he uses the submission attempt to get back up to his feet. “RDA” greets him with a flying knee. He follows that up with a right hook to the body and then another. Good shots from the former lightweight champion to close out round one.

Megan Anderson promises to show 'how human Cris Cyborg can really be' at UFC 214 | FOX Sports

Conor McGregor Sparring Partner Gives Him No Chance Against Floyd Mayweather | MMAWeekly.com

MMA is not boxing. Boxing is not MMA. Just like Wrestling is not Jiu-Jitsu and vice versus. Yes every once in a while its fun to watch the mix. But in the end, when one crosses into the sport at elite-levels in 2017 — it never ends well. Jiu-Jitsu guys can’t wrestle with Olympic athletes under their rules and vice versus. It would be like an MMA fighter in Karate Point sparing. The point sparer will out point them because they understand the game better. It is like watching an elite chess player play against an elite checkers player. It is two different games! Conner Mcgregor is great in his sport! But against an elite boxer under boxing rules and regulations there is a point that common sense comes into play. Yes, this is a freak show fight for fans that know nothing about combat sports. It’s like an elite cricket player trying to bat against a pro baseball pitcher with a baseball bat under baseball rules. Because the cricket player has never done it, I say he strikes out. In professional boxing, Conner Mcgregor is really easy to hit. He is stiff and has no movement because he is not use to fighting against guys of that caliber.

Holm and Correia continued to be reluctant to throw strikes in the start of the second round. Holm continued to rely on her kicks but also began throwing more punching combinations. Correia began having success with her striking. At the end of the round, Correia secured Holm’s back but wasn’t able to do anything with the position.

UFC Fight Night 111 Bonuses: Holm, Sasaki, Li, Camacho Earn $50K Awards

It took her a while to get warmed up, but Holly Holm ’s patience paid off — literally. The former bantamweight queen earned a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for her third-round knockout of Bethe Correia in the UFC Fight Night 111 headliner in Singapore on Saturday. After two slow-paced rounds, Correia taunted “The Preacher’s Daughter” and paid the price for it. Moments later, Holm floored her Brazilian foe with a beautifully-placed head kick and clinched the victory with a follow-up uppercut 1:09 into round three. Elsewhere, Yuta Sasaki captured the card’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for his come-from-behind triumph over Justin Scoggins in a preliminary flyweight tilt. Scoggins was in control early, suplexing his foe and flooring him with a left hand in round one. That dominance continued in the second stanza until Sasaki was able to sweep into mount, take his man’s back and secure a rear-naked choke to elicit a tapout at the 3:19 mark. Finally, Jingliang Li and Frank Camacho garnered “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their preliminary welterweight duel.

Sergey Kovalev, Andre Ward Not Very Civil at Final Pre-Fight Presser

It’s one of the best possible matchups that can happen in the sport of boxing. Andre Ward is the recognized pound-for-pound king and he’s set to put his undefeated record on the line against world No. 2 ranked P4Per Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev Saturday in Las Vegas and to say that the two camps aren’t overly fond of each other would be an understatement. Kovalev (30-1-1, 26 KOs) has only lost to Ward in his stellar professional career but that result has been criticized and debated since it occurred last November. Kovalev had Ward dead to rights in the second round when they fought, but he couldn’t put the Oakland native away. Kovalev struggled with his stamina down the stretch and allowed “S.O.G.” into the fight. Ward stormed back in the latter stages of the duel and walked away with a controversial unanimous decision. At Thursday’s final pre-fight press conference, both fighters kept things short, and while some irritations and accusations were tossed between the camps, tensions de-escalated just as things were heating up. “You all want to hear from me (but) I’ve already said enough.

UFC Fight Night 111 Medicals: Bethe Correia Gets 6-Month Term After Head-Kick KO Defeat

Former women’s bantamweight title challenger Bethe Correia has been issued a six-month medical suspension following her knockout loss to Holly Holm at UFC Fight Night 111 . The UFC, which oversaw the event, recently released a full list of medical suspensions to mixedmartialarts.com . UFC Fight Night 111 took place at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore this past Saturday. Holm floored Correia with a left head kick and landed one follow-up punch before the 135-pound bout was halted 1:09 into round three. Correia will be sidelined 180 days unless she receives “dental clearance.” At a minimum, the 33-year-old Brazilian is suspended 60 days with 45 days no contact. Holm, meanwhile, received a mandatory seven-day medical suspension. Five other fighters from UFC Fight Night 111 are facing potential six-month suspensions: Andrei Arlovski (hand), Colby Covington (eye), Dong Hyun Kim (must be cleared by maxillofacial or ophthalmological examination), Walt Harris (hand) and Jingliang Li (foot).

Opinion: McGregor Will Lose, But He's Already Won

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * By now, I'm assuming you've heard about the big fight. Given the nature, importance and sheer spectacle of Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor fighting, there's a million things to be said, nearly infinite sub-conversations to be had. The foremost and obvious topic is, of course, “Can McGregor actually win?” but it's also a question that entirely misses the point of this whole hoopla. In terms of pure math or philosophy, the answer is yes, Conor McGregor could very well win. Come Aug. 26, he may well just walk up to perhaps the greatest pugilist ever, smash him in the snot box with a left hook and turn the world upside down. In practicality, the “Fight of the Century” will likely be exactly the sparring exhibition we've imagined for months, as a faded but still outstanding Mayweather jabs and counters for 12 rounds en route to a decision; you know, a Floyd Mayweather fight.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Holly Holm Holding Firm at 135

Not all important, resounding wins are created equally. Sometimes a single win could send your stock skyrocketing. Sometimes, even if you author a stirring “Knockout of the Year” contender in an Ultimate Fighting Championship main event, a major victory could mean merely maintaining your place. Safe to say, Holly Holm is holding down her spot in this edition of the official Sherdog.com rankings. Holm, our No. 3 bantamweight woman in the world, remains fixed into her position at 135 pounds by virtue of her March 2016 title loss to Miesha Tate and more specifically her five-round decision defeat to top contender Valentina Shevchenko in July. However, on June 17, “The Preacher's Daughter” destroyed former UFC title contender Bethe Correia with, poetically, a Brazilian kick to the head in Kallang, Singapore. Not every moment of the bout was exciting, but the eventual outcome is instructive that the 35-year-old former boxing star's UFC title run and her bantamweight stature are not flukes. The biggest shift in this update does come courtesy of the UFC Fight Night 111 card but in an unexpected fashion.

Edmonton Orders Third-Party Review Into Death of Tim Hague Following Boxing Match

The City of Edmonton has ordered a third-party review to be conducted into the boxing match the resulted in the death of Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Tim Hague , according to a report from Global News . “We want to retain — we don’t know who or how yet — a third party to do a comprehensive review and our thinking is… that review will have to get information from all of the different individuals who were part of organizing the event,” deputy city manager Rob Smyth said. The City of Edmonton oversees the Edmonton Combative Sports Commission. According to Smyth, the review will include any promoters, referees, physicians and inspectors involved with the fight. Hague suffered a second-round knockout loss to former Canadian Football League talent Adam Braidwood in a bout held under the KO Boxing banner at the Shaw Conference Center on June 16. Hague was knocked down three times in the opening frame but was allowed to begin the second round by referee Len Koivisto. Hague’s head bounced off the canvas after being floored by a right hand in the second stanza.

Opinion: The Cost of Combat

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Nobody thought the UFC Fight Night 111 showdown between Holly Holm and Bethe Correia on Saturday was going to be the biggest news of the combat sports world. Nor did anyone think that claim would belong to the rematch between Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev . The most important news to occur recently did not belong exclusively to boxing or mixed martial arts but rather an overlap of the two; and no, I’m not talking about the Floyd Mayweather - Conor McGregor fight. Former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight Tim Hague died on Sunday after getting knocked out in a boxing match in Canada. Hague, 1-2 in boxing and 21-13 in MMA, was knocked out a combined 10 times in his total 15 losses across sports, including both of his boxing losses and each of his last five mixed martial arts bouts. He was 34 years old.

Opinion: No Denying Greatness of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * “Some people hate Floyd Mayweather Jr., and they’ll say anything to prove it.” -- Craig Medaris For whatever reason, many people in boxing today put a disturbing amount of mental energy into trying to discredit a man who is obviously one of the most gifted fighters -- if not the most gifted fighter -- of this generation. Mark Malinowski in a June 13 article for RingObserver.com argued that Mayweather was nothing more than a clever cherry picker -- a common criticism of great fighters who play the “cocky villain” role. Just how credible is this claim, and aside from armchair fight acumen and psychological expertise, is there anything in the actual record to support it? Let us look at the situation presented more closely. According to Malinowski, Mayweather “ducked” Vivian Harris in favor of Henry Bruseless, who is named as a “patsy.

How will we remember Germaine de Randamie's UFC title reign? As the weirdest and maybe the worst

This is a shockingly bad career decision on de Randamie’s part. In one non-move, she’s managed to alienate both fans and the UFC, while giving up her title literally without a fight. If the goal for a fighter is to win fights, build a legacy, and make money (not necessarily in that order), there’s no worse way to handle your business.
