Bellator NYC co-headliner Fedor Emelianenko: 'I don't separate fighting and the faith'

However, it’s not all about faith, he said. The 40-year-old MMA great is also Russia’s most famed mixed martial artist. Although his best days, which included a legendary run as PRIDE FC heavyweight champion, are arguably behind him, Emelianenko said he still feels pressure to fight for his home country.

“We have had up fight odds since Nov. 18 of 2016 with the hopes that it would take place, and there has been non-stop McGregor money from being a 10/1 underdog to his current line as a 4/1 underdog. We expected more money to come in on McGregor, but not at this level,” Bovada’s sports book manager Kevin Bradley told

UFC welterweight George Sullivan has accepted a one-year suspension from USADA after a second anti-doping violation. Sullivan tested positive for the banned substance clomiphene and its metabolite, 4-hydroxyclomiphene, following an out-of-competition urine test conducted on Jan. 14. As a result of the positive test, Sullivan was removed from a UFC 208 clash against Randy Brown on Feb. 11. Although Sullivan’s failed drug test would normally warrant a two-year suspension, the fighter was able to get his sanction reduced by providing proof that his positive test came while using a substance under the care of a physician for a documented medical condition. “Upon notification of his positive test, Sullivan immediately identified a prescription fertility medication as the source of the prohibited substance detected in his sample,” the USADA statement read. “After a thorough review of the case, including the examination of medical records provided by the athlete, USADA confirmed that Sullivan’s positive test was caused by Clomiphene Citrate, which he was using in a therapeutic dose under the care of a physician to treat a medical condition.

UFC Fight Night 111 medical suspensions: 4 receive 6-month terms, including Bethe Correia

All fighters who weren’t issued a longer suspension received a mandatory seven-day rest term. Correia (10-3-1 MMA, 4-3-1 UFC), who also took a punch from Holm (11-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) that leveled her before her bout was called off in the third round, is one of six fighters to receive a six-month term.

Sherdog’s Boxing Pound-for-Pound Rankings

Three of the top 10 pound-for-pound boxers in the sport have competed since this list was last revised. Coincidentally, two fought against one another at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, and the other put his skills on display on the undercard. While a few changes have been made, these guys remain the best of the best. 1. Andre “S.O.G.” Ward (32-0, 16 KOs) Ward did not have an easy time of it against rival Sergey Kovalev, as they locked horns for a second time in an anticipated rematch on June 17. Kovalev landed several hard punches, raked shots to the arms and body and wore down “S.O.G.” during the first half of the fight. However, the Oakland, California, native proved resilient. Ward stormed back with vicious punches to the body and exhausted the Russian with a constant game of tie-up before putting him away in the eighth round. A wicked right hand marked the beginning of the end for Kovalev, who covered up against the ropes and had to be rescued by referee Tony Weeks. While Ward appeared to land a few low blows during the flurry that finished the fight, he nevertheless strengthened his position as the top fighter in the sport.

The Bottom Line: Like It or Not, Legends Fights are Here to Stay

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Bellator MMA in recent years has developed an identity as a location for legends approaching the ends of their careers. That approach is on exhibit with the organization’s Madison Square Garden debut on Saturday in New York. While the event features rising stars like Aaron Pico and James Gallagher , as well as prime competitors like Douglas Lima , Michael Chandler and Phil Davis , the main event and co-main event have a different flavor. With three 40-year-olds and one 38-year-old, it isn’t exactly Royce Gracie - Ken Shamrock in 2016, but the bouts are clearly more about what these fighters have accomplished in the past than what they’ll do in the years to come. Putting older competitors into fistfights as they move into their 40s and 50s has understandably provoked criticism. MMA is an inherently dangerous activity, and it’s not something to enter into lightly when one is past his or her physical prime.

Opinion: No Denying Greatness of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * “Some people hate Floyd Mayweather Jr., and they’ll say anything to prove it.” -- Craig Medaris For whatever reason, many people in boxing today put a disturbing amount of mental energy into trying to discredit a man who is obviously one of the most gifted fighters -- if not the most gifted fighter -- of this generation. Mark Malinowski in a June 13 article for argued that Mayweather was nothing more than a clever cherry picker -- a common criticism of great fighters who play the “cocky villain” role. Just how credible is this claim, and aside from armchair fight acumen and psychological expertise, is there anything in the actual record to support it? Let us look at the situation presented more closely. According to Malinowski, Mayweather “ducked” Vivian Harris in favor of Henry Bruseless, who is named as a “patsy.

Al Iaquinta gives Conor McGregor chance vs. Floyd Mayweather: 'I hope he shocks the world'

“The reason I’m giving McGregor a chance is because he’s defied the odds – he’s backed up everything he says,” Iaquinta said. “The first time, you doubt him. The second time, you doubt him. The third time, you know, wherever we’re at right now, he’s talked a lot of (expletive) and he’s backed it up. Honestly, I hope he goes out there and I hope he shocks the world. I hope he does. I think it will be a great story.

Opinion: McGregor Will Lose, But He's Already Won

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * By now, I'm assuming you've heard about the big fight. Given the nature, importance and sheer spectacle of Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor fighting, there's a million things to be said, nearly infinite sub-conversations to be had. The foremost and obvious topic is, of course, “Can McGregor actually win?” but it's also a question that entirely misses the point of this whole hoopla. In terms of pure math or philosophy, the answer is yes, Conor McGregor could very well win. Come Aug. 26, he may well just walk up to perhaps the greatest pugilist ever, smash him in the snot box with a left hook and turn the world upside down. In practicality, the “Fight of the Century” will likely be exactly the sparring exhibition we've imagined for months, as a faded but still outstanding Mayweather jabs and counters for 12 rounds en route to a decision; you know, a Floyd Mayweather fight.

Opinion: The Cost of Combat

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Nobody thought the UFC Fight Night 111 showdown between Holly Holm and Bethe Correia on Saturday was going to be the biggest news of the combat sports world. Nor did anyone think that claim would belong to the rematch between Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev . The most important news to occur recently did not belong exclusively to boxing or mixed martial arts but rather an overlap of the two; and no, I’m not talking about the Floyd Mayweather - Conor McGregor fight. Former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight Tim Hague died on Sunday after getting knocked out in a boxing match in Canada. Hague, 1-2 in boxing and 21-13 in MMA, was knocked out a combined 10 times in his total 15 losses across sports, including both of his boxing losses and each of his last five mixed martial arts bouts. He was 34 years old.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Holly Holm Holding Firm at 135

Not all important, resounding wins are created equally. Sometimes a single win could send your stock skyrocketing. Sometimes, even if you author a stirring “Knockout of the Year” contender in an Ultimate Fighting Championship main event, a major victory could mean merely maintaining your place. Safe to say, Holly Holm is holding down her spot in this edition of the official rankings. Holm, our No. 3 bantamweight woman in the world, remains fixed into her position at 135 pounds by virtue of her March 2016 title loss to Miesha Tate and more specifically her five-round decision defeat to top contender Valentina Shevchenko in July. However, on June 17, “The Preacher's Daughter” destroyed former UFC title contender Bethe Correia with, poetically, a Brazilian kick to the head in Kallang, Singapore. Not every moment of the bout was exciting, but the eventual outcome is instructive that the 35-year-old former boxing star's UFC title run and her bantamweight stature are not flukes. The biggest shift in this update does come courtesy of the UFC Fight Night 111 card but in an unexpected fashion.

Sherdog Forums Chat Recap: Lorenz Larkin

Lorenz Larkin made the decision in March to jump from the Ultimate Fighting Championship to Bellator MMA , joining other fights like Phil Davis , Rory MacDonald , Matt Mitrione and Valerie Letourneau . The 30-year-old Riverside, California, native will challenge Douglas Lima for the welterweight championship in his promotional debut at Bellator 180 this Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. Larkin competed in multiple weight classes before settling in at 170 pounds. A failed encounter with Muhammed Lawal in 2012 prompted a move from light heavyweight to middleweight, and losses to Francis Carmont , Brad Tavares , Costas Philippou and Derek Brunson resulted in his decision to downshift to welterweight. Larkin has no regrets about the path he took. “I think everything happens for a reason,” he said in the latest installment of the Sherdog Forums Q&A series , “and if I didn’t go through everything, who knows, I might not be at welterweight.” The Millennia MMA export owns victories over former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler , “The Ultimate Fighter 16” semifinalist Neil Magny and two American Top Team reps: Jorge Masvidal and Santiago Ponzinibbio .

UFC 213 Update: Rob Font vs. Douglas Silva de Andrade Set for Las Vegas

A bantamweight clash pitting Rob Font against Douglas Silva de Andrade has been added to the UFC 213 lineup. The Las Vegas-based promotion recently confirmed the pairing. UFC 213 takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on July 8 and is headlined by a women’s bantamweight title tilt between Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko . In the co-main event, Yoel Romero and Robert Whittaker will vie for the interim middleweight crown. Font, 29, has been victorious in three of his first four promotional appearances. Most recently, the Boston native scored a first-round TKO of Matt Schnell at “The Ultimate Fighter 24” finale on Dec. 3. Font’s only defeat in the past 13 outings came against bantamweight contender John Lineker at UFC 198. Andrade began his professional tenure with 22 consecutive triumphs — along with one no contest — on the regional circuit. After dropping a unanimous verdict to Zubaira Tukhugov in his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 36 in February 2014, the 31-year-old Brazilian has earned back-to-back triumphs over Cody Gibson and Enrique Briones to improve to 24-1 overall.

Beating the Odds: UFC Fight Night ‘Holm vs. Correia’

The Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s return to Singapore proved to be a boon for favorites, with one notable exception. Former Shooto Pacific Rim champion Yuta Sasaki submitted Justin Scoggins with a rear-naked choke in the second round of their preliminary flyweight clash at UFC Fight Night “Holm vs. Correia” on Saturday at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. Sasaki entered the cage as a +420 underdog, per, and brought it to a close 3:19 into Round 2. For more than a round, Scoggins (-550) lived up to the expectations of oddsmakers. The 25-year-old executed a takedown, outstruck Sasaki by a wide margin -- 74-25 in total strikes, according to FightMetric data -- and knocked down the Japanese standout inside the first five minutes. His fortunes changed in the middle stanza. The American Top Team rep moved to top position and appeared to be on his way to a two-rounds-to-none lead, only to see Sasaki turn the tables, sweep into mount and advance to the back. Soon after, the choke was in place. Scoggins fought to free himself, but the squeeze was too much to overcome.

Heather Hardy: MMA One of the Few Sports Where Women Are Seen as Athletes

After compiling a 20-0 record and winning the WBC international featherweight title in the boxing ring, Heather Hardy will make her mixed martial arts debut in one of the world’s most famous sporting venues — Madison Square Garden. Hardy will square off with nine-bout veteran Alice Yauger in a flyweight bout to be televised on Spike as part of the Bellator 180 card, which serves as a lead-in to the promotion’s pay-per-view event at the same arena. While most newcomers would generally make their first MMA foray in a more low-profile environment, Hardy would like to remind the world that she isn’t your average cagefighting rookie. “Because I’m an athlete and because I’m a veteran of combat sports I understand fighting more than most people do,” Hardy told “So my transition to doing judo, jiu-jitsu, American wrestling, muay Thai and kickboxing, I don’t want to say it came natural, but I was able to apply my knowledge of boxing to those other disciplines. I’m sure it’s been much easier for me as an elite fighter than maybe it would be for someone else.” Despite her accomplishments in the Sweet Science, Hardy instantly found MMA to be a more lucrative endeavor — even with her lack of experience.

‘Conor won’t last nine-minutes’

Boxing coach Angelo Reyes, a student of legendary boxing coach Freddie Roach, doesn’t think UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor will last three rounds against Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

Why boxer Chris van Heerden leaked (unedited) Conor McGregor sparring footage

“When people ask me why I’ve released this footage now, it’s because it hurts me that there are guys like myself who have been devoted to this sport, risking our lives,” he said. “And to see McGregor, who has zero knowledge of professional boxing, make it out like he could just get out of an octagon, step in the ring and beat up the best pound-for-pound fighter out there – to just make out like our lifestyle is so easy and that anybody could do it, and then for people to be saying he has a big chance of beating Floyd. I just thought, judge for yourself.”
