5 Things You Might Not Know About Angela Lee

As Angela Lee sits comfortably atop women’s mixed martial arts in One Championship , questions of how she fares against ladies from other top promotions arise. “Unstoppable” has already expressed her desire to move up a weight class, looking to become the first two-division women’s champion with the promotion. That also means being in the same weight division as Rose Namajunas , Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Michelle Waterson , who previously had something to say about her. Before any dream matchups are made, here are five things you might want to know about Lee. 1. She comes from a family of martial artists. Angela’s father, Ken Lee , is always seen walking out and cornering her in every fight. That isn’t just the usual show of parental support. Ken is her head coach and is a black belt in hap do sool, taekwondo, and jiu-jitsu. Angela’s mother, Jewelz, is also a black belt in hap do sool and taekwondo. Her brother, Christian, is likewise a One Championship title contender who fights at featherweight. A little brother and a little sister who both train in martial arts complete their tightly-knit family.

2’s Pound-for-Pound Top 10

Inactivity has caught up to Conor McGregor . Absent from the MMA scene since his historic win over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 on Nov. 12, 2016, the former two-division Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholder has surrendered much of the equity he built during his gold rush at 145 and 155 pounds. McGregor’s detour into the boxing world for a blockbuster showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in August brought him untold millions in prize money but also created doubt as to whether or not he would ever return to mixed martial arts. He has done nothing in the 10 months since -- unless one considers his dolly attack on a charter bus full of fighters at UFC 223 a publicity stunt to keep his name in the headlines -- to alleviate the uncertainty surrounding his future in the cage. As a result, McGregor exits the pound-for-pound stage after an extended stay. The “Notorious” Irishman was not the only departure. Former lightweight champion turned welterweight contender Rafael dos Anjos fell short in his bid to capture interim gold at 170 pounds, losing a unanimous decision to Colby Covington in the UFC 225 co-headliner on June 9.

Chris Weidman, Kelvin Gastelum Trade Words Over Next Title Shot

Now that Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight king Robert Whittaker has defeated Yoel Romero for the second time at UFC 225 , the remaining Top-5 middleweights are jockeying for position to secure the next title shot. Two of those top middleweights have been trading shots back and forth on social media, each making a case for his own shot at UFC gold while diminishing the other’s accomplishments. Former divisional champ Chris Weidman and Kelvin Gastelum were friendly and polite leading into their fight at UFC on Fox 25 last July, but that good will has been tossed out of the window now that the stakes are higher. Gastelum began the heated exchange on Wednesday, calling Weidman “Chrispy” and challenging his claim to the next title shot on Twitter: Chrispy??? Now it’s argument is simple. I am ranked ahead of YOU and I finished YOU in my last fight. — Chris Weidman (@chrisweidman) June 14, 2018 Weidman submitted “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 17 winner with a third round arm-triangle choke at their meeting last year, but Gastelum did find success early on, dropping the former champion with punches at the end of the first round.

Jorge Masvidal Eviscerates Neil Magny, Kamaru Usman While Looking for Fight

Jorge Masvidal is having trouble getting a fight, and now “Gamebred” is targeting every Top 5 welterweight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship in order to get one. Masvidal continued his campaign in eviscerating the entire welterweight division, taking aim at Kamaru Usman and Neil Magny in particular, all in an effort to finally get another fight. “ I’m going to get somebody at some point or another, whether it be a top-10 guy or not. Somebody’s face is going to get dismantled .” Gamebred hasn’t fought once yet this year after ending 2017 on a disappointing two-fight losing streak. However, one of those losses was a split decision defeat to perennial top five welterweight Demain Maia and the other was a decision loss to Stephen Thompson . Prior to those losses, Masvidal earned perhaps the biggest victory of his entire mixed martial arts career after stopping Donald Cerrone , snapping his four-fight winning streak and becoming the first man to beat him at 170 pounds. Masvidal and Magny have developed quite the feud lately, with Magny calling out the “unprofessional slob” back in May.

Andre Ewell Brabo Choke Taps Dinis Paiva, Brings Vacant CES MMA Bantamweight Crown

Dinis Paiva vs Andre Ewell #CES50 — ZombieProphet (@GIFsByZP) June 16, 2018 Andre Ewell made the most of the narrowest of openings. The Apex MMA representative countered a takedown attempt with a tight brabo choke and submitted hometown favorite Dinis Paiva to capture the vacant CES MMA bantamweight championship in the third round of their CES 50 headliner on Friday at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island. Ewell (13-4, 1-0 CES MMA) brought it to a close 36 seconds into Round 3. Paiva (11-7, 11-7 CES MMA) staggered the King of the Cage veteran with a left cross and kept him off-balance with repeated takedowns in the first round. That set the stage for the remarkable second. Ewell rattled the Team Sityodtong standout with a multi-punch burst and opened a cut near his right eye, as he appeared to seize momentum. However, Paiva bounced back late in the frame and nearly submitted the Californian with a rear-naked choke in the waning moments, their back-and-forth struggle for supremacy bringing the crowd to a boil. When Paiva shot for another takedown at the start of the third round, Ewell was waiting -- and ready.

UFC Attorney Denies Low Figures For UFC 225’s PPV Buy Rate

In this story from Wednesday, the @ufc disputed our reported PPV buys for UFC 225. Here’s the update: McGregor due in New York court Thursday for bus-attack hearing — Lance Pugmire (@latimespugmire) June 14, 2018 UFC 225 featured two title fights and several big names, but initial reports regarding its pay-per-view buy rate were still alarmingly low. Despite an interim welterweight and middleweight championship bouts, UFC 225 reportedly did less than 150,000 PPV buys, however now the Ultimate Fighting Championship is claiming otherwise. While it’s no secret that recent UFC’s PPVs have taken a huge hit in viewership over the last few years, less than 150,000 buys is still a remarkably low and disappointing figure for the world’s leading MMA promotion. The only other PPVs that do those kind of numbers are reportedly headlined by 125-pound champion and pound-for-pound king Demetrious Johnson, but that’s a conversation for another day. UFC attorney Hunter Campbell discussed the matter with the LA Times, saying the reports of less than 150,000 purchases for UFC 225 was a “material misrepresentation” of the actual buy rate and short by “something in excess of six figures.

M-1 Challenge 94 Video: Artem Damkovsky Breaks Arm in Failed Title Bid

The lightweight title fight between Damir Ismagulov and Artem Damkovsky has ended prematurely, as Damkovsky broke his forearm on the champion's head. The first-round stoppage means Ismagulov now rides an 11-fight winning streak with three successful title defenses. #M1Challenge94 — Kyle Johnson (@Maldobabo) June 15, 2018 European mixed martial arts promotion M-1 Global hosted M-1 Challenge 94 Friday in Orenburg, Russia, and had an unusual end to proceedings in the main event. In a lightweight title fight between king Damir Ismagulov and former ace Artem Damkovsky , the champion successfully defended his title when the fight was stopped by the referee due to an injured arm. With approximately one minute remaining in the opening period, the fighters separated and Damkovsky threw an overhead left hook that broke his forearm. The fighter felt the injury immediately and waved for the referee to stop the fight. With the stoppage, Ismagulov secured his 11th straight victory and retained his lightweight title. A very disappointed Damkovsky could be seen crying in his corner while medics took care of his injury.

After the event, White said he planned to meet with McGregor in Las Vegas but didn’t specify a date.

Geek for Technique: Best Moves at UFC 225

UFC 225 on Saturday was one of the best cards of the year on paper, and it certainly did not disappoint. From preliminary knockouts to hotly contested title bouts, the event had it all. The latest installment in the Geek for Technique series breaks down the best the pre-PPV card had to offer. In the opening bout, Hawaiian prospect Dan Ige wasted no time against Mike Santiago . Ige took the fight to the ground in the opening seconds, advanced to the back and earned the technical knockout in under a minute. Unfortunately, most onlookers wanted to see more of Ige, as he is one of the top prospects to come out of the first season of Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series, but with the quick finish, expect to see him back in the cage soon. Twelve-year UFC veteran Clay Guida took on rangy submission specialist Charles Oliveira on the undercard. Guida enjoyed some success on the feet but foolishly shot for a takedown with his neck open, and Oliveira grabbed the guillotine to earn his 15th submission victory. Oliveira finished the choke with the arm in.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Reaping the Rewards

Robert Whittaker has spent the last 18 months consolidating power atop the Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight division. “The Reaper” turned away Yoel Romero for a second time at UFC 225 on June 9, as he withstood a furious charge from the 2000 Olympic silver medalist and held on for a split decision in the main event. It will not go down as a successful title defense for the undisputed champion -- Romero missed weight for the rematch -- but Whittaker remains the standard by which all other current 185-pound fighters are judged. The 27-year-old has won nine fights in a row and figures to face another stiff challenge, perhaps against Kelvin Gastelum , in his next appearance inside the Octagon. For now, he retains his spot as the No. 1 middleweight in the Sherdog divisional rankings. There were other movers and shakers at UFC 225. Colby Covington backed up his rhetoric by taking care of business against Rafael dos Anjos in the five-round co-headliner, where a unanimous decision brought him the interim welterweight crown and set the stage for unification bout with undisputed champion Tyron Woodley later this year.
