Beating the Odds: UFC Fight Night ‘Chiesa vs. Lee’

Those who doubt Clay Guida often walk away with egg on their face. The former Strikeforce champion made a triumphant return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s lightweight division -- he had spent his previous seven bouts at 145 pounds -- with a unanimous decision over Erik Koch at UFC Fight Night “Chiesa vs. Lee” on Sunday at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City. All three judges sided with Guida: 29-28, 29-26 and 30-26. The 35-year-old Team Alpha Male rep entered the cage as a +274 underdog, per “The Carpenter” executed multiple takedowns and mauled Koch (-349) on the mat, utilizing shoulder strikes, elbows and short punches. According to FightMetric data, Guida outlanded the talented but oft-injured Roufsport standout by a staggering 133-17 margin. It was his first win in more than two years. Guida was not the only underdog to shine. Fellow journeyman Tim Boetsch (+130) took care of business against an overweight Johny Hendricks , as he stopped “Bigg Rigg” with punches 46 seconds into the second round of their co-main event.

Michael Chiesa rips referee Mario Yamasaki: 'He should never officiate ever again' | FOX Sports

“I just remember looking for Kevin’s hands, looking up on the screen, seeing I had 32-seconds left or something, so I went from fighting the hands to just flexing up on my neck, bringing my hands up, letting him pump his arms out and I could scrape down and escape,” Chiesa explained about the end of the fight when speaking to FOX Sports. “I just see Mario [Yamasaki] come in and the second I saw him coming in to break it up, I instantly knew. I mean the guy has a reputation for poor officiating.

UFC Fight Night 112 bonuses: Controversy in main event, but Kevin Lee still gets $50,000

On the main card, Reyes (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) had a flawless UFC debut when he stopped Joachim Christensen (14-6 MMA, 1-3 UFC) in the first round. Boetsch (21-11 MMA, 12-10 UFC) took out Johny Hendricks (18-7 MMA, 13-7 UFC) with a second-round TKO. And in the main event, Lee (16-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) got past Michael Chiesa (14-3 MMA, 7-23 UFC) – but with a little help from referee Mario Yamasaki

Bellator NYC results: Chael Sonnen uses takedowns to grind past Wanderlei Silva

Although the second stop ended in victory, with Silva largely hapless as Sonnen roughed him up on the mat, it wasn’t exactly the type of barnburner that leaves fans screaming for more. At times, Sonnen appeared to be resting more than working in top position, pitter-patting to the body in Silva’s guard and changing his mind on submissions and positions. Twice, he managed to take mount in the final frame, only to switch back to the less dominant side mount and half-guard and go back to a kimura.

Opinion: Bellator MMA Meets Murphy's Law in NYC

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * NEW YORK -- The Spike-televised portion of Bellator 180 started well enough, with two finishes in a row for prospects that the promotion is clearly pushing. One, Heather Hardy , won her pro debut with seconds to go in the most exciting bout of the night, while the other, Ireland's James Gallagher , emphatically ran through and choked out a pseudo-name in Chinzo Machida . The event felt like a big deal, the Madison Square Garden crowd was hot ... there was even momentum and everything! Just about everything went wrong after that. The Spike portion of the card was headlined by Phil Davis defending the light heavyweight crown against Ryan Bader . That this bout was set as the last fight before the pay-per-view broadcast never made sense; Bellator had to know going in that the hard sell fight was not exactly going to be Chan Sung Jung and Leonard Garcia , inducing extra buys prior to World Extreme Cagefighting 48.

Chiesa didn’t go unconscious and didn’t tap causing an otherwise solid performance by Lee to end in controversy. This one was all Herrig. Though Kish showcased all the boundless heart for which she’s become known, she simply could not keep up with her veteran foe on the mat. By the time the third round was over, Herrig had wracked up 9:22 of control time, and landed more than 100 significant strikes. She also nearly finished the fight with a deep-looking rear naked choke. Needless to say, she left Oklahoma City with a unanimous decision win.

VIDEO | Michael Chiesa slams Mario Yamasaki, demands rematch with Kevin Lee |

“The second I saw [Yamasaki] coming in, I instantly knew,” Chiesa said. “The guy has a reputation for poor officiating. I’m not disappointed in myself for how for I reacted, like a poor sport, but not only did you rob me of an opportunity, you robbed the fans of a great main event, you robbed Kevin. I mean, Kevin got a win over me, there’s not many people in the world that have done that, but now it’s really not a win. It’s surrounded in controversy. Dude, everybody knows I’ve fought the best blackbelts in my division. Jim Miller, Joe Lauzon, Beneil Dariush, all these guys have taken my back in the first round. I always get out, and I always win. You robbed me. So I think it’s only right that me and my team, we go back, we go to the commission and do what we can to get this overturned. And I’m going to look to get a rematch. I’ll fight him in Detroit, I’ll fight him in December, I’ll fight him right now. We’re going to run it back, there’s no way we’re not, I’m not going to have this opportunity robbed from me like this.

Bellator 180 Undercard on Spike Draws 901,000 Viewer Average in Saturday Overnight Ratings

The initial ratings are in for Bellator 180 's pay-per-view lead-in and they are solid. Monday, Bellator and television partner Spike announced that announced that the televised portion of Bellator 180 from Madison Square Garden in New York on June 24 averaged 901,000 viewers in overnight ratings, with the featured bout, Ryan Bader's light heavyweight title win over Phil Davis, drawing 1.1 million viewers. The ratings announcement is slightly unusual in that the numbers combine the viewership of both Spike, as well as another Viacom-owned property, Country Music Television, which also aired the program. The early ratings reflect only live and overnight viewership; recent Bellator MMA events on Spike have experienced significant ratings growth when factoring in DVR +3 numbers, which will be available later this week. Bellator 179, the promotion's last event, aired on tape delay from London, England, initially drawing an average of 607,000 viewers; after DVR +3 numbers were factored in, the event drew 659,999 with an 877,000 average for the main event between Rory MacDonald and Paul Daley.

Kevin Lee Choke Prompts Premature Stoppage on Michael Chiesa in UFC 112 Main Event

Was it a legit finish? Kevin Lee with a submission on Michael Chiesa that we'll be talking about for awhile! #UFCOKC — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) June 26, 2017 Michael Chiesa did not see eye to eye with referee Mario Yamasaki. Kevin Lee was awarded a first-round submission after sinking a rear-naked choke on “The Ultimate Fighter 15” winner in the UFC Fight Night 112 headliner on Sunday at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City. Yamasaki called for the stoppage 4:37 into Round 1. Chiesa (14-3) did not tap and did not lose consciousness, and he protested the decision immediately. The controversial conclusion notwithstanding, Lee (16-2) appeared to be headed for a clean victory. The Xtreme Couture representative struck for a takedown inside the first 90 seconds, advanced to the back and secured his position with a body triangle before applying heavy ground-and-pound. Lee cinched the choke after an extended struggle, resulting in the finish. Afterward, both men seemed open to a rematch. BJJ: Learn how to apply the Estima lock starting from the leg drag by @gallerr

The Estima lock is a quick, powerful way to finish on the foot. It consists of lassoing the guard player's foot and, soon after, tightening the position in the form of a rear naked choke. Developed by the brothers Braulio and Victor Estima, it is often used when one's opponent tries to sweep or take the back. This video will teach you another variation on the technique. If, as they try to pass using the leg drag, your opponent restores guard and leaves a foot behind, then don't think twice: it's Estima lock time. #jiujitsu #bjj #brazilianjiujitsu
