UFC Fight Night 111 ‘Holm vs. Correia’ Play-by-Play, Results & Round-by-Round Scoring

Rafael dos Anjos vs. Tarec Saffiedine Round 1 Pressing forward in the southpaw stance, dos Anjos blocks a high kick and fires back at Saffiedine with a kick to the ribs. Saffiedine snatches the Brazilian's leg on his next kick and runs dos Anjos to the floor. The welterweights scoot toward the fence, Saffiedine leaning across dos Anjos' body in half guard. Dos Anjos tries a kimura from the bottom, but Saffiedine clears his arm and resumes working to pass guard. Dos Anjos rolls to his knees, gets caught in a headlock as he stands, and Saffiedine presses the ex-lightweight champ against the fence. Saffiedine roughs up dos Anjos with knees to the body as they clinch on the fence. The fighters separate with 2:20 remaining in the opening round. Dos Anjos comes forward now, sticking a left hand on Saffiedine's rib cage before shooting in for a takedown at the fence. Saffiedine angles for an armbar from the bottom and gets stacked up by "RDA," who works to set up a keylock before Saffiedine escapes to his feet. Dos Anjos corners Saffiedine on the fence to land a jump knee, but Saffiedine slows things down with another clinch.

Opinion: The Final Tragic Stage of a Fighter’s Career

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Remember the good ol’ days of MMA, when guys like Fedor Emelianenko , Takanori Gomi , B.J. Penn and Andrei Arlovski were tearing up the scene in their respective promotions? There was nothing like those glory years of the early 2000s, when mixed martial arts was permeated with excitement from the original guard of the sport passing the torch to the next generation. Those four were among the trailblazers that pushed the heavyweight and lightweight divisions in Pride Fighting Championships and the Ultimate Fighting Championship to the next level of the fight game. Fast forward a decade or so, and all four of them are continuing to compete, much to the chagrin of fans who were there in those early years. Penn and Emelianenko suffered demoralizing losses at Bellator 180 and UFC Fight Night 112 , and the week before that, Arlovski and Gomi put some additional losses on their losing streaks at UFC Fight Night 111.

Sherdog Forums Chat Recap: Lorenz Larkin

Lorenz Larkin made the decision in March to jump from the Ultimate Fighting Championship to Bellator MMA , joining other fights like Phil Davis , Rory MacDonald , Matt Mitrione and Valerie Letourneau . The 30-year-old Riverside, California, native will challenge Douglas Lima for the welterweight championship in his promotional debut at Bellator 180 this Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. Larkin competed in multiple weight classes before settling in at 170 pounds. A failed encounter with Muhammed Lawal in 2012 prompted a move from light heavyweight to middleweight, and losses to Francis Carmont , Brad Tavares , Costas Philippou and Derek Brunson resulted in his decision to downshift to welterweight. Larkin has no regrets about the path he took. “I think everything happens for a reason,” he said in the latest installment of the Sherdog Forums Q&A series , “and if I didn’t go through everything, who knows, I might not be at welterweight.” The Millennia MMA export owns victories over former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler , “The Ultimate Fighter 16” semifinalist Neil Magny and two American Top Team reps: Jorge Masvidal and Santiago Ponzinibbio .

The Bottom Line: Opportunity Lost

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * It’s easy to make excuses and to play down the significance of what happened to Aaron Pico at Bellator 180 on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. Pico is after all only 20 years old. It feels mean-spirited to pile on a kid with so much potential who was throwing himself into the fire so early into his career. Pico was in there with a crafty opponent in Zach Freeman , who had much more experience. There’s a reason that inexperienced fighters like Pico tend to get moved along slowly even when big things are expected of them. He has plenty of time to improve his game and to learn from what happened. All of those things may be true. Writing off Pico at this point would be ridiculous. Yet there ought to be no mincing of words: That was a crushing setback the likes of which we rarely see in mixed martial arts. Bellator MMA bet big on Pico by putting him on pay-per-view against an opponent good enough to create curiosity and doubt.

Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Chiesa vs. Lee’

The argument can be made that Kevin Lee has emerged as the most promising young lightweight in the sport, and his latest performance did nothing to diminish his stock. Lee ran his winning streak to five fights and improved to 9-2 under the Ultimate Fighting Championship banner with a rear-naked submission on Michael Chiesa in the UFC Fight Night 112 main event on Sunday at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City. Referee Mario Yamasaki called for the stoppage 4:37 into Round 1, even though Chiesa neither tapped nor lost consciousness. Despite the officiating gaffe, Lee appeared to be seconds away from the finish. Chiesa had no answers for the combination of speed, skill and athleticism “The Motown Phenom” brought to the table. Lee executed a takedown inside the first 90 seconds, settled in top position after denying an attempted triangle choke and ultimately climbed to the back. His position secured with a body triangle, he drew blood with heavy ground-and-pound and snaked his arms into place for the choke. Soon after, Yamasaki was on the scene to rescue Chiesa, “The Ultimate Fighter 15” winner’s protests falling on deaf ears.

UFC Results: Bethe Correia Savagely Taunts Holm, Then Gets Brutally Knocked Out!

Holm and Correia continued to be reluctant to throw strikes in the start of the second round. Holm continued to rely on her kicks but also began throwing more punching combinations. The side kick to Correia’s body was Holm’s favorite weapon in the opening rounds. The referee eventually stepped in and warned the fighters that they needed to engage. Correia began having success with her striking. At the end of the round, Correia secured Holm’s back but wasn’t able to do anything with the position.

Family Says UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes’ Condition is ‘Improving’

Matt Hughes is showing positive progress after a truck driven by the UFC Hall of Famer was hit by a train on June 16. Hughes’ sister, Beth Hughes Ulrici, recently released an update on her Facebook page. “Our family would like to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers for Matt. He is improving and continues to show us his heart and determination each day. He has a long road ahead of him and your continued thoughts and prayers will help him with the journey.” No further details regarding Hughes’ health were given. Hughes was airlifted to HSHS St. John’s Hospital after a truck he was driving was hit by a train while crossing the tracks in Raymond, Ill. According to Illinois State Police, Hughes drove the vehicle directly across the tracks “directly in front of the train” and the collision occurred on the passenger side of the vehicle. A statement released by the hospital two days after the accident revealed that Hughes was in “stable condition” but “minimally responsive.” Meanwhile, Hughes family revealed that the former welterweight champion had no broken bones or internal injuries but was not yet awake or responsive in a previous statement.

UFC Fight Night 111 Bonuses: Holm, Sasaki, Li, Camacho Earn $50K Awards

It took her a while to get warmed up, but Holly Holm ’s patience paid off — literally. The former bantamweight queen earned a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for her third-round knockout of Bethe Correia in the UFC Fight Night 111 headliner in Singapore on Saturday. After two slow-paced rounds, Correia taunted “The Preacher’s Daughter” and paid the price for it. Moments later, Holm floored her Brazilian foe with a beautifully-placed head kick and clinched the victory with a follow-up uppercut 1:09 into round three. Elsewhere, Yuta Sasaki captured the card’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for his come-from-behind triumph over Justin Scoggins in a preliminary flyweight tilt. Scoggins was in control early, suplexing his foe and flooring him with a left hand in round one. That dominance continued in the second stanza until Sasaki was able to sweep into mount, take his man’s back and secure a rear-naked choke to elicit a tapout at the 3:19 mark. Finally, Jingliang Li and Frank Camacho garnered “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their preliminary welterweight duel.

Opinion: McGregor Will Lose, But He's Already Won

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * By now, I'm assuming you've heard about the big fight. Given the nature, importance and sheer spectacle of Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor fighting, there's a million things to be said, nearly infinite sub-conversations to be had. The foremost and obvious topic is, of course, “Can McGregor actually win?” but it's also a question that entirely misses the point of this whole hoopla. In terms of pure math or philosophy, the answer is yes, Conor McGregor could very well win. Come Aug. 26, he may well just walk up to perhaps the greatest pugilist ever, smash him in the snot box with a left hook and turn the world upside down. In practicality, the “Fight of the Century” will likely be exactly the sparring exhibition we've imagined for months, as a faded but still outstanding Mayweather jabs and counters for 12 rounds en route to a decision; you know, a Floyd Mayweather fight.

Edmonton Orders Third-Party Review Into Death of Tim Hague Following Boxing Match

The City of Edmonton has ordered a third-party review to be conducted into the boxing match the resulted in the death of Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Tim Hague , according to a report from Global News . “We want to retain — we don’t know who or how yet — a third party to do a comprehensive review and our thinking is… that review will have to get information from all of the different individuals who were part of organizing the event,” deputy city manager Rob Smyth said. The City of Edmonton oversees the Edmonton Combative Sports Commission. According to Smyth, the review will include any promoters, referees, physicians and inspectors involved with the fight. Hague suffered a second-round knockout loss to former Canadian Football League talent Adam Braidwood in a bout held under the KO Boxing banner at the Shaw Conference Center on June 16. Hague was knocked down three times in the opening frame but was allowed to begin the second round by referee Len Koivisto. Opinion: No Denying Greatness of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * “Some people hate Floyd Mayweather Jr., and they’ll say anything to prove it.” -- Craig Medaris For whatever reason, many people in boxing today put a disturbing amount of mental energy into trying to discredit a man who is obviously one of the most gifted fighters -- if not the most gifted fighter -- of this generation. Mark Malinowski in a June 13 article for RingObserver.com argued that Mayweather was nothing more than a clever cherry picker -- a common criticism of great fighters who play the “cocky villain” role. Just how credible is this claim, and aside from armchair fight acumen and psychological expertise, is there anything in the actual record to support it? Let us look at the situation presented more closely. According to Malinowski, Mayweather “ducked” Vivian Harris in favor of Henry Bruseless, who is named as a “patsy.

How will we remember Germaine de Randamie's UFC title reign? As the weirdest and maybe the worst

This is a shockingly bad career decision on de Randamie’s part. In one non-move, she’s managed to alienate both fans and the UFC, while giving up her title literally without a fight. If the goal for a fighter is to win fights, build a legacy, and make money (not necessarily in that order), there’s no worse way to handle your business.
