Opinion: The Final Tragic Stage of a Fighter’s Career

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Remember the good ol’ days of MMA, when guys like Fedor Emelianenko , Takanori Gomi , B.J. Penn and Andrei Arlovski were tearing up the scene in their respective promotions? There was nothing like those glory years of the early 2000s, when mixed martial arts was permeated with excitement from the original guard of the sport passing the torch to the next generation. Those four were among the trailblazers that pushed the heavyweight and lightweight divisions in Pride Fighting Championships and the Ultimate Fighting Championship to the next level of the fight game. Fast forward a decade or so, and all four of them are continuing to compete, much to the chagrin of fans who were there in those early years. Penn and Emelianenko suffered demoralizing losses at Bellator 180 and UFC Fight Night 112 , and the week before that, Arlovski and Gomi put some additional losses on their losing streaks at UFC Fight Night 111.

The Bottom Line: Opportunity Lost

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * It’s easy to make excuses and to play down the significance of what happened to Aaron Pico at Bellator 180 on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. Pico is after all only 20 years old. It feels mean-spirited to pile on a kid with so much potential who was throwing himself into the fire so early into his career. Pico was in there with a crafty opponent in Zach Freeman , who had much more experience. There’s a reason that inexperienced fighters like Pico tend to get moved along slowly even when big things are expected of them. He has plenty of time to improve his game and to learn from what happened. All of those things may be true. Writing off Pico at this point would be ridiculous. Yet there ought to be no mincing of words: That was a crushing setback the likes of which we rarely see in mixed martial arts. Bellator MMA bet big on Pico by putting him on pay-per-view against an opponent good enough to create curiosity and doubt.

Family Says UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes’ Condition is ‘Improving’

Matt Hughes is showing positive progress after a truck driven by the UFC Hall of Famer was hit by a train on June 16. Hughes’ sister, Beth Hughes Ulrici, recently released an update on her Facebook page. “Our family would like to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers for Matt. He is improving and continues to show us his heart and determination each day. He has a long road ahead of him and your continued thoughts and prayers will help him with the journey.” No further details regarding Hughes’ health were given. Hughes was airlifted to HSHS St. John’s Hospital after a truck he was driving was hit by a train while crossing the tracks in Raymond, Ill. According to Illinois State Police, Hughes drove the vehicle directly across the tracks “directly in front of the train” and the collision occurred on the passenger side of the vehicle. A statement released by the hospital two days after the accident revealed that Hughes was in “stable condition” but “minimally responsive.” Meanwhile, Hughes family revealed that the former welterweight champion had no broken bones or internal injuries but was not yet awake or responsive in a previous statement.

Cruz Dominates Martin in Rematch in PBC on FS1 Main Event

Cruz scores another knockdown here in round 4. pic.twitter.com/uE5zWtnlpc — PBC (@premierboxing) June 28, 2017 Welterweight contender Miguel Cruz inched further up the proverbial ladder Tuesday night but almost as important as the win itself is that fact that he vanquished an old rival in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Cruz dominated Alex Martin for 10 rounds in the main event of the latest Premier Boxing Champion’s PBC on FS1 “Toe-To-Toe Tuesdays” event, dropping him multiple times en route to a comfortable unanimous decision win. Cruz squeaked by Martin when they first collided in January via split decision but he made sure the fight was not as close on the scorecards the second time around. Cruz (16-0, 11 KOs) took his foe off his feet in the opening round and then did the same thing in the fourth. Martin (13-2, 5 KOs) was buzzed by the shots but he wasn’t in serious peril of being stopped. The Chicago native kept plugging away to get back into the fight and won several rounds, but Cruz was the better man and the two knockdowns were the key. All three ringside judges favored the Floridian via tallies of 96-92.

Bellator NYC/180 Medical Suspensions: Fedor Emelianenko Faces Possible 90-Day Layoff

Fedor Emelianenko is facing the longest potential medical suspension of anyone on the Bellator NYC “Sonnen vs. Silva” card following his first-round technical knockout loss to Matt Mitrione this past Saturday. “The Last Emperor” was suspended a minimum of 90 days pending clearance from the New York State Athletic Commission, which released a full list of medical suspensions from Bellator NYC and Bellator 180 to Sherdog.com on Wednesday. Emelianenko and Mitrione landed a rare double knockdown during an initial exchange in the heavyweight co-main event. However, “Meathead” was able to gather his bearings more quickly than his opponent, and he was able to pound out Emelianenko with punches from above to earn a stoppage at the 1:14 mark. No one else on the card received a suspension longer than 30 days, while everyone who competed was sidelined at least seven days, per the stand post-bout wait period. Bellator NYC and Bellator 180 took place at Madison Square Garden in New York. MMA’s Greats of the States | Washington: Randy Couture

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it.

Glory announced today that its main event of the Glory 43 SuperFight Series undercard on July 14 has some added pizzazz. Saulo Cavalari will take on Pavel Zhuravlev for the interim light heavyweight title, with the winner set to face reigning champ Artem Vakhitov later in the year. “With what is sure to be an incredible fight between two top-three light heavyweights, we wanted to create stakes fitting of their ranking and the prestige of Madison Square Garden,” said Glory Matchmaker and Managing Director Sports Cor Hemmers. “Our champion Vakhitov injured his hand following Glory 38 Chicago and is working hard toward returning later this year. UFC Fight Night 112 Averages 819,000 Viewers on Fox Sports 1

UFC Fight Night 112 attracted an average of 819,000 viewers for its main card on Fox Sports 1 on Sunday night, according to ShowBuzz Daily . UFC Fight Night 112 took place at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla., and the main card began on FS1 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. In the main event, Kevin Lee scored a controversial first-round submission triumph over Michael Chiesa in a lightweight clash. The main card peaked at 905,000 viewers on two occasions – once for the main event and earlier for the featherweight showdown between Dennis Siver and B.J. Penn . The UFC Fight Night main card also drew 427,000 viewers in the 18-to-49 adult demographic. Siver handed Penn, a former two-division champion, his fifth straight defeat with a majority decision triumph. Meanwhile, the UFC Fight Night 112 prelims, which aired on Fox Sports 2, drew an average of 319,000 viewers. Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Chiesa vs. Lee’

The argument can be made that Kevin Lee has emerged as the most promising young lightweight in the sport, and his latest performance did nothing to diminish his stock. Lee ran his winning streak to five fights and improved to 9-2 under the Ultimate Fighting Championship banner with a rear-naked submission on Michael Chiesa in the UFC Fight Night 112 main event on Sunday at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City. Referee Mario Yamasaki called for the stoppage 4:37 into Round 1, even though Chiesa neither tapped nor lost consciousness. Despite the officiating gaffe, Lee appeared to be seconds away from the finish. Chiesa had no answers for the combination of speed, skill and athleticism “The Motown Phenom” brought to the table. Lee executed a takedown inside the first 90 seconds, settled in top position after denying an attempted triangle choke and ultimately climbed to the back. His position secured with a body triangle, he drew blood with heavy ground-and-pound and snaked his arms into place for the choke. Soon after, Yamasaki was on the scene to rescue Chiesa, “The Ultimate Fighter 15” winner’s protests falling on deaf ears.
