By the Numbers: UFC Fight Night San Antonio

Jeremy Stephens' body took abuse from Cub Swanson's kicks. | Jeff Sherwood/Sherdog.com After nearly a year on the sidelines, Cub Swanson made a statement to the rest of the featherweight division. The Jackson-Wink MMA representative earned his sixth straight victory, taking a unanimous verdict over Jeremy Stephens in the UFC Fight Night main event at the AT&T Center on Saturday night. While Swanson tasted Stephens’ powerful right hand on a few occasions, he was able to gradually outpace his foe with a versatile striking arsenal. Perhaps the most damaging offerings from the California native came in the form of thudding kicks to the body in rounds three and five, both of which temporarily had Stephens reeling. Through it all, Swanson never shied away from exchanging with his heavy-handed dance partner. Swanson figures to be a keen observer when Jose Aldo defends his 145-pound belt against Chad Mendes at UFC 176 in August. Before gazing too far into the future, let us take a look back. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night “Swanson vs.

4 UFC Fight Night: Swanson vs Stephen - Main Card Results - Fighters Only

Stephens landed some clean strikes of his own, although a break in his left hand early on in the fight might explain why he wasn't able to land one of the concussive blows he's become famous for in his career. Although it was a close fight Swanson's striking and relentless pace gave the judges all the reasons they needed to give Swanson the victory and place him next in line for a shot at the 145lb belt.

UFC Fight Night 44 results: Ricardo Lamas tops Hacran Dias despite possible broken hand

“I feel good about the win tonight,” Lamas said. “There’s always a lot of pressure coming off a loss, so even though it wasn’t the most exciting fight, I’m happy. Dias is a very tough guy to finish. He’s had over 20 fights and no one has been able to finish him. I broke my hand late in the first round and it got progressively harder to grab onto anything and punch effectively. I was trying to put it out of my mind and just keep pushing, because regardless of an injury we’ve got a job to do in that octagon. I’m getting right back in the gym regardless of my hand. There’s always stuff you can be doing to get better. No vacations in this game.”

UFC Fight Night 44 results: Clint Hester gets past Antonio Braga Neto with split decision

Hester came out swinging in the final round. But Neto ducked under one and looked for a single. Hester survived it, then didn’t take the bait when Neto dropped to guard to invite him in. Moments later, though, Hester slipped while winging a punch, fell to the canvas, and Neto jumped on top of him with four minutes left in the round. Neto passed to full mount, but he was tired enough that Hester bucked his way out and into top position in Neto’s guard along the fence. The fight moved back to the feet with less than a minute left, and Hester again started slinging punches. Neto drove in for a takedown and got one with 10 seconds left in the fight – leaving another close round up to the judges’ call.

World Cup 2014: How Tim Howard once showed his leadership skills by refusing to play goalie (Politi)

This country has seen just how good a goalie Tim Howard is during this World Cup, and if the U.S. team shocks Germany today and wins its group outright, it’ll no doubt see it again. But there was a moment, on a field in his hometown of North Brunswick 17 years ago, when Howard refused to play goal. And that, maybe better than anything, illustrates why he is not just the final line of defense for this American team, but its most valuable leader, too. This was his final high school game, the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group III championship. Howard had made a deal with his coach, Stan Williston, before the season: He would play midfielder his senior year, giving him a welcome break from the pressure that came from his role as the under-17 national team goalie. Howard was such an incredible athlete that it hardly was a sacrifice for the team. He earned all-state honors, leading North Brunswick to the brink of a title that would cap his amateur career. Then came the final, against Ocean Township, with the home fans gathered in North Brunswick to watch.

UFC Fight Night 44 results: Cezar Ferreira bloodies Andrew Craig, then has to survive rally

Ferreira landed a big left hand early that had Craig on the canvas, coupled with a possible slip. Ferreira went after a choke on the ground, then drilled Craig with knees to the body. But Craig powered back to his feet. Ferreira kicked to the body moments later, then took an accidental eye poke that got him a brief break. With blood dripping down the left side of his face from a cut on the top of his head, he landed a good left hand. But seconds later, he ate a combo, then a straight left from “Mutante.” Ferreira landed a driving takedown with 35 seconds left that likely sealed up the round for him.

Kelvin Gastelum might go back to Mike Dolce after missing weight at UFC Fight Night 44

As Gastelum found out, Dolce’s services are worth their weight in gold. He gave up 20 percent of his purse – likely several thousand dollars – when he missed the minimum 171-pound mark for his fight Saturday against Nico Musoke (12-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 44 at AT&T Center in San Antonio. The bout aired live on FOX Sports 1.

Cub Swanson, Jeremy Stephens overcame tough upbringings to reach UFC spotlight

Swanson has won five fights in a row and Stephens three straight. Both have reached the elite of the UFC's featherweight division and one will be the No. 1 contender for a title shot after Saturday night (FOX Sports 1, 10 p.m.). It would have been easy for neither one of them to end up here. Many who dealt with their situations wouldn't be.

Chael Sonnen Failed Second Random Drug Test, Two Substances Differ from First Failed Test | MMAWeekly.com

It’s not that surprising that Sonnen would test positive again less than two weeks after the first failed test. It is surprising, though, that two of the four substances he tested positive for on the Portland-administered drug test were different than those the first test showed.

UFC Addresses Chael Sonnen’s Alleged Second Failed Drug Test

Chael Sonnen will appear before the Nevada commission next month. | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com In the midst of two UFC events on Saturday, news broke that Chael Sonnen had failed a second random drug test in the span of five months. Instead of allowing such news to detract from UFC Fight Night “Swanson vs. Stephens,” the UFC remained mum on the topic until the event’s post-fight press conference. UFC President Dana White was not present at AT&T Center in San Antonio to address the report, but the promotion’s public relations director, Dave Sholler, spoke briefly on the subject. “We are made aware that a second random test conducted earlier this month resulted in a positive test for additional banned substances,” Sholler said. “Chael will have an opportunity to appear in front of the Nevada State Athletic Commission later this month, and through a statement released to the media, he has pledged to cooperate.” Sholler went on to add that the UFC supports the guidelines set forth by state athletic commissions with regards to performance enhancing drugs.

UFC Fight Night San Antonio Gate and Attendance 'A Tremendous Success' for the Organization | MMAWeekly.com

“We sold out the lower bowl and in the last couple of weeks opened up the upper deck. So San Antonio was a tremendous success,” said UFC Senior Director of Public Relations Dave Sholler during the event’s post-fight press conference.  ”San Antonio is a big fight town, it always has been.”

Cub Swanson on Jose Aldo Rematch: ‘I Want to be the Guy to Dethrone the Legend’

Cub Swanson prefers a rematch with Jose Aldo over a second shot at Chad Mendes. | Jeff Sherwood/Sherdog.com Cub Swanson was victorious against Jeremy Stephens in his return to the Octagon at UFC Fight Night “Swanson vs. Stephens,” but wasted little time making clear what’s next on his agenda. During an interview on Fox Sports 1, Swanson was asked about whom he’d prefer fighting if UFC officials deemed him next in line for the featherweight title. "Of course I want to fight [Jose] Aldo, that's like [Chris] Weidman beating [Anderson] Silva you know,” Swanson said. “I want to be the guy to dethrone the legend. But fighting for gold is fighting for gold." With Jose Aldo set to defend his belt against Chad Mendes at UFC 176 in Los Angeles, the title picture remains a bit unclear. But with two of Swanson’s five professional losses coming against both men fighting on Aug. 2, rectifying defeats against either remains a driving force in Killercub’s pursuit of the title. Currently riding a six-fight win streak, Swanson seems poised for a run at the 145-pound crown.

Cub Swanson outpoints Jeremy Stephens in entertaining UFC main event

Turn it up, he did. After getting dropped twice in the second, Swanson came back and swept the rest of the fight against Jeremy Stephens in the main event of UFC Fight Night on Saturday at AT&T Center. Swanson ended up earning a unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 48-47) in a bout that made the crowd forget about a lackluster card up until that point. The victory could very well earn Swanson a rematch with UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo.

UFC Fight Night San Antonio Results: Kelvin Gastelum Remains Undefeated with Unanimous Decision Over Nico Musoke | MMAWeekly.com

Musoke quickly tied Gastelum up in the opening seconds of the final round and tried to get the fight to the ground.  Gastelum defended the takedown attempt and picked Musoke apart with strikes.  He continued to land hard kicks to the body and set the pace.  It was clear after fifteen minutes of fighting that Gastelum had extended his undefeated record to 10.

Kelvin Gastelum starts slow, rallies to beat Nico Musoke by decision

One day after coming in almost two pounds over weight, the welterweight contender dispatched underdog Nico Musoke by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) after a sluggish first round at UFC Fight Night on Saturday night at AT&T Center. The bad cut seemed to affect Gastelum early, but he really got into a striking rhythm in the second and third rounds, bloodying the face of Musoke and landing hard kicks to the body.

Johnny Bedford Reacts to Referee Kerry Hatley’s Stoppage: ‘He Looked Dumbfounded’

Johnny Bedford reacts to the referee's stoppage. | Ed Mulholland/Zuffa LLC/Getty Images Johnny Bedford felt he was robbed again. Just months removed from a much-talked-about no contest against Rani Yahya at UFC Fight Night “Minotauro vs. Nelson” that stemmed from an accidental clash of heads, Bedford again had to answer questions regarding a controversial ending on Saturday night. After scoring with punches that rocked the body of Cody Gibson at UFC Fight Night “Swanson vs. Stephens” in San Antonio, Texas, Bedford was caught with a right hand that knocked him backwards to the canvas. Referee Kerry Hatley, in seemingly good position to witness the fall, hesitantly stepped in to wave an end to the contest at the 38-second mark of round one. “I was winning the fight. I got caught with a shot, obviously, but this isn’t boxing. This is MMA. This is the upper echelon of MMA,” said a disappointed Bedford in a Fox Sports 1 interview with Heidi Androl. “This is the UFC, and you expect better referees than that. I’m allowed to grapple.

Chael Sonnen fails second drug test, tests positive for HGH and EPO

Chael Sonnen tested positive for four banned substances earlier this month in a second random drug test administered by the Nevada Athletic Commission. Sonnen, who recently announced his retirement from MMA, was asked to take a blood and urine test on June 5 in Portland, Ore., by the NAC because at the time he was scheduled to fight at UFC 175 on July 5 in Las Vegas. The commission learned earlier this week that Sonnen failed those tests due to the presence of human growth hormone (HGH), recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO), which is typically used to boost red blood cells that carry oxygen to the muscles, increasing stamina and endurance, anastrozole, used to treat early stages of breast cancer, and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the female fertility drug that is often used in an effort to restart testosterone production. Both Sonnen and the UFC were informed of the news earlier this week by the commission. NAC chairman Francisco Aguilar confirmed the news with MMAFighting.com.

Chael Sonnen failed another drug test, this time for HGH and EPO

Sonnen had failed a February test in Nevada when the drugs Clomiphene and Anastrozole showed up in his sample. Those were, Sonnen claimed, used to help his body produce testosterone naturally after Testosterone Replacement Therapy was banned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Those substances are banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency but they aren't necessarily considered major "performance enhancing drugs."
