Professional Fighters League: Daytona Weigh-Ins

The eight fighters slated to compete at Friday’s inaugural Professional Fighters League event tipped the scales to make those bouts official Thursday. The first-of-its-kind mixed martial arts event -- set to be broadcast live from the iconic Daytona International Speedway on NBCSN -- will pit long-time welterweight standout John Fitch against Brian Foster in the five-round main event for the No.1  seed when league play begins in January 2018. Former WSOF heavyweight champion Smealinho Rama will collide with hard-hitting Ronny Markes in the co-main event attraction. Both fighters have competed across multiple weight divisions but will be meeting Friday at light heavyweight. Both Joao Zeferino and Herman Terrado made weight for their welterweight scrap while Jason High and Caros Fodor did the same for their lightweight clash.

Heather Hardy: MMA One of the Few Sports Where Women Are Seen as Athletes

After compiling a 20-0 record and winning the WBC international featherweight title in the boxing ring, Heather Hardy will make her mixed martial arts debut in one of the world’s most famous sporting venues — Madison Square Garden. Hardy will square off with nine-bout veteran Alice Yauger in a flyweight bout to be televised on Spike as part of the Bellator 180 card, which serves as a lead-in to the promotion’s pay-per-view event at the same arena. While most newcomers would generally make their first MMA foray in a more low-profile environment, Hardy would like to remind the world that she isn’t your average cagefighting rookie. “Because I’m an athlete and because I’m a veteran of combat sports I understand fighting more than most people do,” Hardy told “So my transition to doing judo, jiu-jitsu, American wrestling, muay Thai and kickboxing, I don’t want to say it came natural, but I was able to apply my knowledge of boxing to those other disciplines. I’m sure it’s been much easier for me as an elite fighter than maybe it would be for someone else.” Despite her accomplishments in the Sweet Science, Hardy instantly found MMA to be a more lucrative endeavor — even with her lack of experience.

Sherdog’s Boxing Pound-for-Pound Rankings

Three of the top 10 pound-for-pound boxers in the sport have competed since this list was last revised. Coincidentally, two fought against one another at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, and the other put his skills on display on the undercard. While a few changes have been made, these guys remain the best of the best. 1. Andre “S.O.G.” Ward (32-0, 16 KOs) Ward did not have an easy time of it against rival Sergey Kovalev, as they locked horns for a second time in an anticipated rematch on June 17. Kovalev landed several hard punches, raked shots to the arms and body and wore down “S.O.G.” during the first half of the fight. However, the Oakland, California, native proved resilient. Ward stormed back with vicious punches to the body and exhausted the Russian with a constant game of tie-up before putting him away in the eighth round. A wicked right hand marked the beginning of the end for Kovalev, who covered up against the ropes and had to be rescued by referee Tony Weeks. While Ward appeared to land a few low blows during the flurry that finished the fight, he nevertheless strengthened his position as the top fighter in the sport.

5 Things You Might Not Know About Fedor Emelianenko

His salad days in Pride Fighting Championships are now a distant memory, but the iconic Fedor Emelianenko still packs a promotional punch. Emelianenko will make his once-delayed Bellator MMA debut when he faces “The Ultimate Fighter 10” alum Matt Mitrione in the Bellator 180 co-main event on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. The 40-year-old Russian enters the three-round clash on a run of five consecutive victories. However, Emelianenko has not competed since he was awarded a controversial majority decision over Fabio Maldonado under the Fight Nights Global banner a little more than a year ago. “The Last Emperor” has delivered 27 of his 36 career victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission; a staggering 24 of them have occurred inside the first round, including 12-, 26-, 36-, 54-, 62-, 63- and 69-second finishes. Emelianenko enjoys almost universal reverence among seasoned mixed martial arts observers, many of whom still rank him as the greatest fighter of all-time. As Emelianenko prepares for his encounter with Mitrione, here are five things you might not know about the former Pride champion: 1.

UFC welterweight George Sullivan has accepted a one-year suspension from USADA after a second anti-doping violation. Sullivan tested positive for the banned substance clomiphene and its metabolite, 4-hydroxyclomiphene, following an out-of-competition urine test conducted on Jan. 14. As a result of the positive test, Sullivan was removed from a UFC 208 clash against Randy Brown on Feb. 11. Although Sullivan’s failed drug test would normally warrant a two-year suspension, the fighter was able to get his sanction reduced by providing proof that his positive test came while using a substance under the care of a physician for a documented medical condition. “Upon notification of his positive test, Sullivan immediately identified a prescription fertility medication as the source of the prohibited substance detected in his sample,” the USADA statement read. “After a thorough review of the case, including the examination of medical records provided by the athlete, USADA confirmed that Sullivan’s positive test was caused by Clomiphene Citrate, which he was using in a therapeutic dose under the care of a physician to treat a medical condition.

The Bottom Line: Like It or Not, Legends Fights are Here to Stay

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Bellator MMA in recent years has developed an identity as a location for legends approaching the ends of their careers. That approach is on exhibit with the organization’s Madison Square Garden debut on Saturday in New York. While the event features rising stars like Aaron Pico and James Gallagher , as well as prime competitors like Douglas Lima , Michael Chandler and Phil Davis , the main event and co-main event have a different flavor. With three 40-year-olds and one 38-year-old, it isn’t exactly Royce Gracie - Ken Shamrock in 2016, but the bouts are clearly more about what these fighters have accomplished in the past than what they’ll do in the years to come. Putting older competitors into fistfights as they move into their 40s and 50s has understandably provoked criticism. MMA is an inherently dangerous activity, and it’s not something to enter into lightly when one is past his or her physical prime.

Edmonton Orders Third-Party Review Into Death of Tim Hague Following Boxing Match

The City of Edmonton has ordered a third-party review to be conducted into the boxing match the resulted in the death of Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Tim Hague , according to a report from Global News . “We want to retain — we don’t know who or how yet — a third party to do a comprehensive review and our thinking is… that review will have to get information from all of the different individuals who were part of organizing the event,” deputy city manager Rob Smyth said. The City of Edmonton oversees the Edmonton Combative Sports Commission. According to Smyth, the review will include any promoters, referees, physicians and inspectors involved with the fight. Hague suffered a second-round knockout loss to former Canadian Football League talent Adam Braidwood in a bout held under the KO Boxing banner at the Shaw Conference Center on June 16. Hague was knocked down three times in the opening frame but was allowed to begin the second round by referee Len Koivisto. Hague’s head bounced off the canvas after being floored by a right hand in the second stanza.

UFC Fight Night 111 Medicals: Bethe Correia Gets 6-Month Term After Head-Kick KO Defeat

Former women’s bantamweight title challenger Bethe Correia has been issued a six-month medical suspension following her knockout loss to Holly Holm at UFC Fight Night 111 . The UFC, which oversaw the event, recently released a full list of medical suspensions to . UFC Fight Night 111 took place at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore this past Saturday. Holm floored Correia with a left head kick and landed one follow-up punch before the 135-pound bout was halted 1:09 into round three. Correia will be sidelined 180 days unless she receives “dental clearance.” At a minimum, the 33-year-old Brazilian is suspended 60 days with 45 days no contact. Holm, meanwhile, received a mandatory seven-day medical suspension. Five other fighters from UFC Fight Night 111 are facing potential six-month suspensions: Andrei Arlovski (hand), Colby Covington (eye), Dong Hyun Kim (must be cleared by maxillofacial or ophthalmological examination), Walt Harris (hand) and Jingliang Li (foot).

UFC 213 Update: Rob Font vs. Douglas Silva de Andrade Set for Las Vegas

A bantamweight clash pitting Rob Font against Douglas Silva de Andrade has been added to the UFC 213 lineup. The Las Vegas-based promotion recently confirmed the pairing. UFC 213 takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on July 8 and is headlined by a women’s bantamweight title tilt between Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko . In the co-main event, Yoel Romero and Robert Whittaker will vie for the interim middleweight crown. Font, 29, has been victorious in three of his first four promotional appearances. Most recently, the Boston native scored a first-round TKO of Matt Schnell at “The Ultimate Fighter 24” finale on Dec. 3. Font’s only defeat in the past 13 outings came against bantamweight contender John Lineker at UFC 198. Andrade began his professional tenure with 22 consecutive triumphs — along with one no contest — on the regional circuit. After dropping a unanimous verdict to Zubaira Tukhugov in his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 36 in February 2014, the 31-year-old Brazilian has earned back-to-back triumphs over Cody Gibson and Enrique Briones to improve to 24-1 overall.

Sherdog Prospect Watch: Aaron Pico

Aaron Pico has spent the last 16 years of his life with one focus: combat. The 20-year-old Whittier, California, native has been touted as one of the top prospects to enter mixed martial arts in recent memory, and one look at his resume shows why. Pico started his combat sports career in wrestling at age 4 after a casual outing with his family. “My older brother and I were go-karting, and the shoes that they were wearing were wrestling shoes,” Pico told “My dad looked up the local wrestling club, and that next week, he took me to practice and that is how I started.” Pico found early success in wrestling and burst onto the national scene when he was 8 years old. It was during his time in wrestling that he discovered a passion for other sports. One of them was boxing. “The gym I wrestled at had a ring in it, and if we practiced hard enough, we would be able to put on the gloves and fight,” Pico said. “That is when I learned that my boxing was horrible, so I asked my dad if I could learn how to box.” Pico’s father asked a neighbor, who happened to be a muay Thai fighter, if he could train his son.

PFL 1 ‘Daytona’ Weigh-in Results: Jon Fitch, Brian Foster Set for Inaugural Event

Like the legendary Phoenix, the Professional Fighters League has risen out of the ashes of the now-defunct World Series of Fighting . The new promotion is going to be a completely different animal than the WSOF and on Friday, its first-ever event will take place. The PFL cage will be setup near the pit area of the iconic Daytona International Speedway in Daytona, Florida, and at Friday’s weigh-ins, all of the fighters on the relatively small bill made weight. Headliners Jon Fitch and Brian Foster will lock horns in a welterweight showdown and both of the veterans looked as ready as ever on the scale. Foster, who has competed for the UFC, Titan Fighting Championships and WSOF, among others, weighed in right at 170 pounds. Fitch, a longtime Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran and the final welterweight champion for WSOF, was a smidge heavier; he came in at 170.8 pounds. PFL 1 will be televised live on NBCSN immediately following the Xfinity Series Coca-Cola Firecracker 250. The promotion expects to have its first bout sometime around 10:30 p.

Kevin Lee argues for a 165-pound division, details how UFC would benefit

“It’s ridiculous that I have to do that (cut), but that’s what we’ve got to do,” Lee told reporters during a media lunch Monday, ahead of the FS1-televised headliner at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla. “That’s one of the big things. This fight is even bigger than people realize, because I think there shouldn’t be a holdup on the 165-pound division. I think they should open it up now. I think after July, they’re going to open it up.”

Jon Fitch: Expect ‘Blood Being Spilled’ Friday Night Against Brian Foster

One of the most vocal figures in the sport of mixed martial arts regarding the treatment of its athletes, Jon Fitch is just as lethal outside of the cage as he is inside of it. He’s been a crusader of trying to make MMA a level playing field where the fighters can maximize their income rather than being treated like a number. On Friday night he’ll compete for a new promotion that is aiming to create the sort of environment that Fitch has been fighting for. The Professional Fighters League will host its inaugural event at Daytona International Speedway and Fitch is anchoring the marquee when he collides with fellow Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Brian Foster . With the PFL’s ambitious plans to host a yearlong season that will culminate in a K-1-styled grand prix to determine a single champion of seven weight classes, Fitch is totally on board, especially considering that each bracket winner will pocket $1 million. “I think the PFL is doing their best to make this sport how it should be,” Fitch said in a recent interview with Sherdog.
