This Month’s MMA Birthdays: Rose Namajunas Turns 25

She was not yet old enough to drink when she introduced herself to the MMA masses with a sensational 12-second flying armbar submission on Kathina Catron at Invicta Fighting Championships 5 in 2013. Now one of the top women’s strawweights in the world, Rose Namajunas turns 25 on June 29. Just nine bouts into her professional career, “Thug Rose” has only begun to scratch the surface of her immense talent. A finalist on Season 20 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series, Namajunas has compiled a 4-2 record under the Ultimate Fighting Championship banner while emerging as the No. 1 contender for Joanna Jedrzejczyk ’s women’s strawweight title. The Grudge Training Center rep last appeared at UFC on Fox 24 in April, when she submitted Michelle Waterson with a second-round rear-naked choke at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Namajunas owns other notable victories over Tecia Torres , Paige VanZant and Angela Hill . She holds the rank of black belt in karate and taekwondo but has secured five of her six wins by submission. Barring injury, Namajunas figures to challenge Jedrzejczyk for the 115-pound crown later this year.

Something in the Water: The Past and Present of Hawaii’s Warrior Spirit

“It’s in the water. It’s in the Hawaiian water.” -- former EliteXC champion K.J. Noons A faint glow pulses in liquid darkness like the first heartbeat in a mother’s womb. Ever rising, it reveals itself to be lava leaking upwards from beneath the Earth’s crust. Its searing heat clashes with water cold enough to freeze if not for its salinity. Solid earth forms and pushes upward. Miles of black, cold ocean weigh on it heavily, but it continues to ascend until it pierces open air. Solid land stretches out on top of the ocean surface. Powerful waves rear up and sculpt the shoreline. Distinct islands drift away from each other, netting floating debris and hosting seabirds for brief rests along their transcontinental flights. Seeds nestle into the nutrient-rich volcanic soil, sprouting into a diverse, pullulating oasis, more untouched and isolated than anywhere else on the planet. The islands settle into their edges and wait. Seafaring Polynesians arrive, pragmatic with details and romantic with ambition, brave brilliant and foolish enough to voyage into the distant horizon with little more than their knowledge of submarine rivers and extraterrestrial bodies.

UFC 212 Statistical Matchup Analysis: Aldo vs. Holloway

Since Conor McGregor captured the featherweight title at UFC 194, the division has been in limbo. Even after the Irishman was stripped of the championship, his absence has cast a long shadow over the weight class. Now, at UFC 212 on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, the 145-pound division has its first opportunity to achieve real coherence since 2015. Longtime champion Jose Aldo looks to cement his second Ultimate Fighting Championship title reign with his first defense since losing the belt to McGregor in 2015. After those fateful 13 seconds, Aldo took seven months off before returning at UFC 200, where he put on a masterclass performance against former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar . The win gave Aldo the interim belt -- he was promoted to the genuine article months later after McGregor was stripped -- but more importantly proved that “Scarface” was still as dangerous as ever. This is his first fight of 2017. Opposite Aldo will be Max Holloway . “Blessed” took the scenic route through the featherweight division, compiling 10 straight wins across three years. That winning streak is the longest in the division's history -- Aldo and McGregor are tied for second place with seven straight wins -- and the sixth-longest in the history of the entire UFC.

Kazushi Sakuraba Named as Next 2017 UFC Hall of Fame Inductee | MMAWeekly.com

“When I was told about being inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, my first reaction was surprise,” Sakuraba said. “I stepped into the Octagon 20 years ago and I never could have dreamed that one day I would be invited to join other legends in the UFC Hall of Fame. It has always been my mission, not only to become the best, but to show the world the excitement and glory of MMA. In the process, if I’ve somehow influenced the sport of MMA, it was never in my power to do it alone. I couldn’t have achieved anything without my esteemed opponents, without staff who make events happen, without media who tell our stories, and, most importantly, without the support of the amazing fans. It is my wish to share this honor with everyone in the Japanese martial arts world that, through PRIDE, helped establish a new era in fighting sport.”

http://roxannemodafferi.net/RBlog/2017/06/03/do-you-know-the-greatest-riches-in-the-world/

Actually, there is a lot of cancer on both sides of my family, with almost every female on both sides of my family getting some form. So much in fact that I’m pretty convinced I’m gonna get it eventually. That sounds uncharacteristically pessimistic of me, but it brings a determined resolution: I have to live as much and as hard as I can with the time I have, because so many people don’t have time. Heck, I could be totally healthy and get hit by a car and die. We all die and don’t know when. I don’t want to know. So therefore, every day I wake up, every time I eat something delicious, every time I go out with friends, I am glad. Every time somebody cuts me of fin traffic, I’m not mad. I think, “Whoops that was dangerous. I’m glad I’m alive. I hope that guy doesn’t have an accident down the line because he’s kind of reckless.”
