Professional Fighters League: Daytona Weigh-Ins

The eight fighters slated to compete at Friday’s inaugural Professional Fighters League event tipped the scales to make those bouts official Thursday. The first-of-its-kind mixed martial arts event -- set to be broadcast live from the iconic Daytona International Speedway on NBCSN -- will pit long-time welterweight standout John Fitch against Brian Foster in the five-round main event for the No.1  seed when league play begins in January 2018. Former WSOF heavyweight champion Smealinho Rama will collide with hard-hitting Ronny Markes in the co-main event attraction. Both fighters have competed across multiple weight divisions but will be meeting Friday at light heavyweight. Both Joao Zeferino and Herman Terrado made weight for their welterweight scrap while Jason High and Caros Fodor did the same for their lightweight clash.

Valentina Shevchenko’s Attack on War of Words

Valentina Shevchenko has prepared herself for war as she closes in on UFC 213 on July 8, when she will get her second chance at overcoming Amanda Nunes since their first meeting at UFC 196 last March. The first clash was a close affair. With Nunes dominating Shevchenko in the second after a close opening round, the Ukrainian hammered Nunes on the feet in the third, leaving many wondering what would happen if the bout was scheduled for five rounds. Having split her camp between three separate gyms, Shevchenko is leaving no stone unturned ahead of her first Ultimate Fighting Championship title date. “It’s been really great to be in Denver. For this camp, I started in Thailand at Tiger Muay Thai gym. I then continued the camp with Gracie Barra with ‘Draculino’ ( Vinicius Magalhaes ). After that we came to Denver, we’re training at 303 Academy,” she explained. “Of course, I’ve still been working with my longtime coach Pavel Fedotov, so I’m feeling very good. The altitude in Colorado is very helpful for my physical condition.

Carlos Silva Expects Huge Things with New Professional Fighters League Promotion

With the Professional Fighters League set to host its first-ever event on Friday night, emotions and anticipation are at an all-time high within the sport of mixed martial arts. Born from the ashes of the World Series of Fighting promotion, the PFL is eager to unleash an entirely new world order when it comes to being a combat organization. The PFL has a few shows scattered across the calendar for the remainder of 2017, with the idea to get its proverbial feet wet before taking the plunge into its master plan. Starting in January 2018, the PFL will host a series of events throughout a season, with a K-1-styled grand prix at the end of the year to crown a champion in seven different weight classes, with each champion winning $1 million. Needless to say, everybody involved is full of vigor for the future. “I’m crazy excited,” exclaimed Carlos Silva, President of Event Production and Business Operations for the PFL in a recent interview with “It’s really great for a lot of reasons because we’ve been working hard at doing this event at a track. We’ve worked in the past with the people in Chicago and Phoenix, which are both ISC (International Speedway Corporation) tracks like Daytona and we were able to get with the guys at Daytona to put this all together.

Jon Fitch: Expect ‘Blood Being Spilled’ Friday Night Against Brian Foster

One of the most vocal figures in the sport of mixed martial arts regarding the treatment of its athletes, Jon Fitch is just as lethal outside of the cage as he is inside of it. He’s been a crusader of trying to make MMA a level playing field where the fighters can maximize their income rather than being treated like a number. On Friday night he’ll compete for a new promotion that is aiming to create the sort of environment that Fitch has been fighting for. The Professional Fighters League will host its inaugural event at Daytona International Speedway and Fitch is anchoring the marquee when he collides with fellow Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Brian Foster . With the PFL’s ambitious plans to host a yearlong season that will culminate in a K-1-styled grand prix to determine a single champion of seven weight classes, Fitch is totally on board, especially considering that each bracket winner will pocket $1 million. “I think the PFL is doing their best to make this sport how it should be,” Fitch said in a recent interview with Sherdog.

UFC International Fight Week Media Day face-offs: One gets testy (it's not Nunes-Shevchenko)

LOS ANGELES – Featured fighters for next week’s UFC 213 and The Ultimate Fighter 25 Finale events came together today during UFC International Fight Week Media Day at the JW Marriott at L.A. Live, with one face-off getting a bit testy.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Kayla Harrison will make MMA debut in 2018 |

i feel like i remember her saying that she wasn’t interested a while ago, but i guess things change, and i’m very interested to see how she looks in a fight. ronda had immediate success because of her grappling and we can only assume that kayla is on a similar level there, the question will be her striking. the fact that she’s only 27 is a big plus for her outlook and she’ll be fighting in a very thin division at 145 so she could have immediate impact. hopefully she can make some waves and convince more judoka’s (and girls from other contact sports) to make the transition to mma so 145 can really get going eventually. this is just a random thought, but if she looks good in her first couple fights then i think it’d be interesting to see her fight gabi garcia and maybe even cyborg eventually.

Steven Ray explains why Conor McGregor stands "a better chance than most boxers" against Mayweather |

“I think he stands a better chance than most people would think,” Ray explained. “I think Conor’s probably got a better chance than most boxers to be honest, because any boxer in a boxing fight is probably going to lose, because Floyd’s obviously the better boxer. If anybody is going to beat Floyd, it’s probably going to be somebody that’s not going to come in with a traditional boxing style, that probably isn’t going to move exactly how a boxer would. [McGregor’s] style as well; he’s tall, he’s got a reach advantage, he’s a southpaw, he’s much bigger than Mayweather. Mayweather’s not fought in four years or three years, he’s forty years old. There are a lot of factors that play in that could maybe make the difference. And obviously Conor with the whole mind games stuff, and getting in your head.”

Dana White: If Demetrious Johnson wants Ray Borg, he can have him – but don't complain

“I built an ‘Ultimate Fighter’ around you to try and build you. He said he hasn’t been promoted. Who has defended that weight division more than me? I mean, I used to stand up in front of (the media) at the press conference going, ‘This kid is amazing. He’s unbelievable. He’s this. He’s that,’ which he is. I’m not saying he’s not. But we’re in a spot now where you had the opportunity to really get out there. T.J. Dillashaw called you out. He’s one of the best in the world, and he’s a former world champion. Many people thought he won the fight against (Dominick) Cruz. And you flat out say, ‘I don’t want to fight this guy. I want this guy, I want to fight the No. 5 or No. 6 guy instead.”

Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Chiesa vs. Lee’

The argument can be made that Kevin Lee has emerged as the most promising young lightweight in the sport, and his latest performance did nothing to diminish his stock. Lee ran his winning streak to five fights and improved to 9-2 under the Ultimate Fighting Championship banner with a rear-naked submission on Michael Chiesa in the UFC Fight Night 112 main event on Sunday at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City. Referee Mario Yamasaki called for the stoppage 4:37 into Round 1, even though Chiesa neither tapped nor lost consciousness. Despite the officiating gaffe, Lee appeared to be seconds away from the finish. Chiesa had no answers for the combination of speed, skill and athleticism “The Motown Phenom” brought to the table. Lee executed a takedown inside the first 90 seconds, settled in top position after denying an attempted triangle choke and ultimately climbed to the back. His position secured with a body triangle, he drew blood with heavy ground-and-pound and snaked his arms into place for the choke. Soon after, Yamasaki was on the scene to rescue Chiesa, “The Ultimate Fighter 15” winner’s protests falling on deaf ears.

Michael Chiesa rips referee Mario Yamasaki: 'He should never officiate ever again' | FOX Sports

“I just remember looking for Kevin’s hands, looking up on the screen, seeing I had 32-seconds left or something, so I went from fighting the hands to just flexing up on my neck, bringing my hands up, letting him pump his arms out and I could scrape down and escape,” Chiesa explained about the end of the fight when speaking to FOX Sports. “I just see Mario [Yamasaki] come in and the second I saw him coming in to break it up, I instantly knew. I mean the guy has a reputation for poor officiating.

Professional Fighters League ‘Daytona: Fitch vs. Foster’ Play-by-Play & Results

Smealinho Rama vs. Ronny Markes Round 1 Josh Rutgers is the referee for this light heavyweight matchup, the first-ever bout in the history of Professional Fighters League. They circle early and trade low kicks to begin the fight. Rama goes a bit higher as he slams his shin into Markes’ ribs. Both men stay on the outside as they feel each other out, but Makes shoots in and scores an easy takedown. Rama easily sweeps the Brazilian and lands on top in half guard. Markes powers his way back to his feet, but Rama creates some space and tags him with a left high kick and a left hook. Markes shakes them both off but he eats a few more kicks to the gut. Rama slowly stalks his foe behind a lazy jab before firing a straight left through the guard. Markes remains coy as he backs away, not letting his hands go before getting tied up against the cage. Rama tosses out a push kick to the chin, but it just falls short. Markes delivers a vicious low kick with 45 seconds left. Markes backs off and slips on a wet ad logo, but Rama doesn’t capitalize. An exchange of punches breaks out and Ronny ducks lock for a knee bar but misses at the bell.

Dana White: Everything's cool with Ice Cube regarding Mayweather-McGregor venue conflict

“The Ice Cube thing was blown way out of proportion,” White told MMAjunkie on Wednesday. “Ice Cube and I got that whole thing squashed. Twitter Mailbag: On why UFC 214 is suddenly stacked, Felice Herrig's complaint and more

The fight game is a sales business at heart, and everyone in it sells what they can. I’m not going to criticize Herrig for using sex appeal to market herself earlier in her career, but I would expect her to be a little more understanding when other people – whether it’s younger fighters or the UFC itself – do the same. Now that she’s stacking up meaningful wins, maybe the thing for her to do is focus on where that can take her.

Dana White believes two of his big UFC stars will never fight again |

“I highly doubt it,” White said to MMAjunkie when asked if he thinks we will see Nick return to competition any time soon. “I don’t know. I honestly don’t think that, and I can’t speak for him, you’d have to speak with Nick himself, but if you ask me – people ask me, ‘Do you think Ronda (Rousey) is coming back?’ No. I think Ronda’s going to retire. Ronda hasn’t retired, but my opinion is, I think she will. I don’t think Nick Diaz will ever fight again. I just don’t think he has the desire anymore.”

Michael Chiesa Officially Appeals Loss To Kevin Lee

On Sunday, at a UFC Fight Night in Oklahoma City, Chiesa fought Lee in a pivotal lightweight fight in the main event.

Justine Kish smelled poop right after UFC Fight Night 112 loss but didn't know she did it

“Maybe I had a little bit too much fiber,” Kish said. “I had steel cut oatmeal, bacon and eggs, and water, and refuel packs to hydrate. I probably had like a hundred bottles of water just because I had to lose so many pounds. I swear, I promise – I went to the bathroom like 20 times. That’s all part of pre-fight stuff. I didn’t think anything was left in my system.”

Opinion: Where is Nick Diaz? How Dare You Ask

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Two years ago when the Ultimate Fighting Championship announced its partnership with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, the stringent regulations and testing the relationship would entail -- a then-minimum of 2750 or so tests per year across the roster -- it was fair to say that the game had changed. You're reading this; you've seen it with your own eyes. You've seen fighters, from prince to pauper, champions to chattel, test positive for performance enhancing drugs. You've seen athletes still yet to fail a drug test undergo clearly observable, drastic physical changes. Nick Diaz isn't one of those guys. Alas, the drug testing itself is far from the only component of the UFC-USADA relationship that forces another level of responsibility on the promotion's athletes. No, coordinating the mass-scale, routine examination of over approximately 550 fighters scattered all over the planet requires certain mechanisms, a particular level of rigor.
