As silence fell in Rio, Max Holloway ended the disputed era of the UFC featherweight title

That ought to make Holloway the one true champ featherweight. It also ought to give hope to all those other contenders who saw their title hopes dead-end at Aldo. It’s a new day at 145 pounds, thanks to a little violent upheaval. Everybody gets fresh hope for another chance.

Claudia Gadelha: Nobody But Joanna Jedrzejczyk is a Challenge for Me at Strawweight

Two of the last three strawweight title challengers squared off at UFC 212 on Saturday night, and the end result wasn’t very competitive. Claudia Gadelha made short work of Karolina Kowalkiewicz in Rio de Janeiro, submitting her Polish foe with a rear-naked choke 3:03 into round one. For Gadelha, the victory arrived because she was willing to leave the comfort zone of her longtime training home of Nova Uniao. That was far from easy. “I feel great. Like I’ve been saying, I’ve changed a lot. And I had to challenge myself for that,” Gadelha said on Fox Sports 1. “It wasn’t easy. It was very hard. I had eight weeks camp in Albuquerque. I missed my family. I had to do that to become the new Claudia.” Gadelha initially relocated to Luttrell-Yee MMA in Albuquerque, N.M., prior to a unanimous decision win over Cortney Casey at UFC Fight Night 100 this past November. In addition to working with coaches Chris Luttrell and Ray Yee, Gadelha supplemented her training at the renowned Jackson-Wink MMA gym. Leaving Brazil and Nova Uniao was essential to her growth, Gadelha said.

Beating the Odds: UFC 212

Not much was expected from Brian Kelleher in his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut, but he turned the tables on Iuri Alcantara and the oddsmakers. A short-notice fill-in for Felipe Arantes , Kelleher submitted Alcantara with a guillotine choke in the first round of their preliminary bantamweight battle at UFC 212 “Aldo vs. Holloway” on Saturday at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Alcantara, who had not lost via submission since he tapped to a Mauricio Reis kneebar on Oct. 3, 2009, bowed out 1:48 into Round 1. Kelleher entered the cage as a +325 underdog, per BetDSI.com. Alcantara (-400) showed little regard for the promotional newcomer’s skills, as the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt closed the distance and took an aggressive tack. He lit up Kelleher with body kicks and straight left hands -- he outlanded the Oceanside, New York, native 12-4 and outhrew him 29-15, according to FightMetric data -- before shooting for a poorly conceived takedown. Kelleher countered with a slick arm-in guillotine and prompted a meek tapout from the former Jungle Fight champion.

In the process, if I’ve somehow influenced the sport of MMA, it was never in my power to do it alone. Behind him lay Marko Kovacevic . Wood cut down Kovacevic with a burst of accurate punches to claim the vacant bantamweight title in the Cage Warriors 84 headliner on Friday inside The Indigo at the O2 in London. The end came 3:41 into Round 1, as referee Marc Goddard jumped in to rescue Kovacevic (9-2) from further damage. It was competitive for a time. However, Wood (11-3) turned the tide with a right hook that dropped the Swiss contender to a knee. The Team Titan prospect then pinned Kovacevic to the cage with punches before a short straight left and right hook finished the job. In the light heavyweight co-main event, the unbeaten Kenneth Bergh submitted “The Ultimate Fighter 11” and “The Ultimate Fighter 23” alum Norman Paraisy with a second-round guillotine choke. Paraisy (15-5-2) tapped 2:13 into Round 2, as he made an unsuccessful return from a three-year layoff.

Matches to Make After UFC 212

Jose Aldo was removed from power and forcefully so. Max Holloway became the third undisputed featherweight titleholder in Ultimate Fighting Championship history, as he disposed of Aldo with punches in the third round of their UFC 212 main event on Saturday at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Holloway drew the curtain 4:13 into Round 3, as he took his place on the throne at 145 pounds. Aldo fought well in spurts: According to preliminary FightMetric data, he outlanded the Hawaiian in each of the first two rounds, 19-12 in the first and 29-28 in the second. However, he holstered one of his most trusted and devastating weapons, the 30-year-old Nova Uniao standout throwing only one leg kick across more than 14 minutes of combat. Holloway decked him with a two-punch combination in the third round, climbed into top position and cut loose with ground-and-pound -- he paused briefly for an attempt at a rear-naked choke -- until referee John McCarthy intervened. In the aftermath of UFC 212 “Aldo vs. Holloway,” here are five matches that ought to be made: Max Holloway vs.

Adonis Stevenson Obliterates Fonfara in Rematch to Retain 175-Pound Title

Boom, stoppage. @AdonisSuperman takes down @andrzej_fonfara in round 2 via TKO. #StevensonFonfara2 pic.twitter.com/EUP0oCOV0I — SHOWTIME Boxing (@ShowtimeBoxing) June 4, 2017 Adonis Stevenson vowed to turn Andrzej Fonfara into minced meet in their rematch on Saturday night and he did. “Superman” electrified his hometown fans at the Bell Centre in Montreal as he flattened the Polish challenger in the second round and he made it look rather easy. Stevenson (29-1, 24 KOs) dropped Fonfara in the opening frame with a blistering combo to the head and nearly took him out moments later. Fanfara (29-5, 17 KOs) was resilient enough to hang on and continue, but his fortunes never improved. Stevenson, sensing an early stoppage, swarmed his foe and unloaded a whirlwind of punishment to the head and body as soon as the following frame began, so much so that Fonfara’s trainer Virgil Hunter had to throw in the towel. The official time of the TKO was just 28 ticks into the second round to retain his WBC light heavyweight title. Now the boxing world awaits to see if he’ll fight the winner of Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev later this month.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Taking a Crown or Holding It Down

Max Holloway has spent over five years in the Ultimate Fighting Championship . He has won 11 fights in a row. He is still just 25 years old. The most important number, however, is that he is No. 1 in the world at 145 pounds. “Blessed” first entered the Sherdog.com rankings in our Feb. 15, 2015 update, debuting at No. 10 after his win over Cole Miller , which was already five fights into his outstanding unbeaten streak. Over the last two years and change, the new fighting pride of Hawaii worked his way up our featherweight list the old-fashioned way -- by beating all the top guys he could. This culminated in his performance at UFC 212 on June 3 in Rio de Janeiro, where he overcame a hard-punching start from all-time 145-pound king Jose Aldo and then ran roughshod over the legendary Brazilian in the third round to take the undisputed UFC featherweight title. UFC 212 is an event that will be forever defined by the ascent of Holloway, but it's also a reminder that you can strengthen your position without moving up the charts. In the Holloway-Aldo co-feature, the unquestioned second-best strawweight woman in the world, Claudia Gadelha , took on the universally regarded No.

Opinion: The Benefits of a Slow Boil

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * I’m probably not alone in saying that the UFC 212 main event between Jose Aldo and Max Holloway was incredible and horrible at the same time. The fight itself was incredible -- there was a narrative arch to it and plenty of big-strike action, as well -- but there is an unmistakable anxiety that comes with watching two great fighters go at it. It’s impossible to remove myself emotionally from such fights. I also tend to think it’s boring to do so, since the real weight of watching sports is in the human connection that permeates the immediate entertainment. Regardless, this was a tough test, for both men in the Octagon and for me to watch. I’m a teacher. Teachers aren’t supposed to have favorite students, but we do: Some kids are simply more enjoyable than others, in the same way that some coworkers have better personalities than others. It shouldn’t affect how students are treated or evaluated, but having classroom favorites is an unavoidable reality.

It would appear that the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has lost another mixed martial artist to free agency. UFC’s Brian Kelleher earned an impressive victory at Saturday’s UFC 214. The mixed martial artist submitted Iuri Alcantara in front of his opponent’s home crowd in Brazil. However, the crowd were not truly off of their feet until Kelleher provided his post-fight interview. After defeating Alcantara, Kelleher was met with a roaring crowd of boos. The fighter made a shout out to UFC President Dana White. “Dana, that’s No. 13 in a row. I just took No. 13 out. I want a top 10 guy. I don’t want this slow pace. Feed me to the sharks. I’m ready.” He said. The fighter also spurred on the crowd by mimicking, in Portuguese, the infamous “you’re gonna die”chant, while adding a lengthy “shhhh” to the statement.
