Boxing great, social icon Muhammad Ali dies at 74

In the first fight, though, Frazier had the upper hand. He relentlessly wore Ali down, floored him with a crushing left hook in the 15th round and won a decision. It was the first defeat for Ali, but the boxing world had not seen the last of him and Frazier in the ring. Ali won a second fight. Then came the "Thrilla in Manila'' on Oct. 1, 1975, in the Philippines, a brutal bout that Ali said afterward was "the closest thing to dying'' that he had experienced. Ali won that third fight but took a terrific beating from the relentless Frazier before trainer Eddie Futch kept Frazier from answering the bell for the 15th round.

18 Roundtable: UFC 199 ‘Rockhold Vs Bisping’ (Main Card) - MMA Radio - Sherdog.com

Grudge rematches again take center stage at UFC 199 on Saturday, as Michael Bisping makes his first and likely only bid for gold against Luke Rockhold and Urijah Faber seeks to unseat arch nemesis Dominick Cruz. And, of course, the Sherdog Radio Network stood ready to get you ready with a meaty radio Roundtable to break it all down. Host Jack Encarnacao welcomed Sherdog.com's Jordan Breen, Sherdog and Bloody Elbow contributor Connor Ruebusch and SI.com's Jeff Wagenheim for a complete breakdown of Saturday's UFC offering from the famed Forum in Inglewood, Calif. The panel discusses the remarkable path to title shots Bisping and Faber followed, and the remarkable poise Rockhold and Cruz displayed in ascending to their respective thrones. They also differ on who takes the pivotal featherweight contenders fight between Max Holloway and Ricardo Lamas, and hesitantly wax nostalgic about the MMA career of Dan Henderson as he authors another chapter against Hector Lombard. Plus, detailed assessments on which undercard prospects to watch and which are most likely to show out in the UFC's Inglewood debut.

Lesnar Given 4-Month Waiver On UFC’s Drug Testing Requirements

“On June 6, 2016, UFC heavyweight Brock Lesnar was registered by USADA into the UFC Anti-Doping Policy testing pool. As part of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, UFC may grant a former athlete an exemption to the four-month written notice rules in exceptional circumstances or where the strict application of that rule would be manifestly unfair to an athlete. Given Lesnar last competed in UFC on December 30, 2011, long before the UFC Anti-Doping Policy went into effect, for purposes of the Anti-Doping Policy, he is being treated similarly to a new athlete coming into the organization.

‘TUF 8’ Winner Efrain Escudero Among Seven Fighters Released by the UFC

The UFC has trimmed its roster again, recently releasing seven fighters including “The Ultimate Fighter 8” winner Efrain Escudero . Additionally, Robert Whiteford , Clint Hester , Willie Gates , Dominic Waters , Yan Cabral and Filip Pejic were cut by the Las Vegas-based promotion. Sherdog.com confirmed the releases with a source close to the UFC. Esudero won “TUF 8” in 2008 but then parted ways with the UFC in 2010 after posting a 3-2 record in the Octagon. He returned to the promotion in 2011 but was released after dropping back-to-back fights against Jacob Volkmann and Mac Danzig . His third UFC stint began in 2014 and saw him win two of his first three fights and serve as a coach Season 2 of “TUF: Latin America.” However, recent decision losses to Leandro Silva and Kevin Lee led to him receiving his third pink slip from the promotion. All of the aforementioned fighters had lost at least two straight bouts with the exception of Pejic, who suffered a first-round submission loss to Damian Stasiak in his lone Octagon appearance at UFC Fight Night “Rothwell vs.

Smartest Guy at the Bar: UFC 199 Edition

It has been four years since the Ultimate Fighting Championship brought the Octagon to the Los Angeles area without Ronda Rousey in tow. Two title fights featuring American champions will provide the one-two punch at UFC 199 on Saturday at The Forum in Inglewood, California. Middleweight champion Luke Rockhold meets late replacement Michael Bisping in the main event, and the long-awaited trilogy bout pitting bantamweight titleholder Dominick Cruz against rival Urijah Faber takes co-headliner billing. All four participants live in the Golden State, with Bisping, the Brit, residing closest to the venue. Each will arrive in the West Coast media capital eager to leave his mark on pop culture by capturing gold. All the title hoopla aside, the event features an American legend and a slew of action fighters across weight class and gender lines. The Forum was renovated in an effort to recapture some of the Showtime magic it once housed. Twenty-six fighters will now get their chance. HOW WE GOT HERE: Rockhold rocked Bisping with a left high kick and tapped “The Count” with a topside guillotine in November 2014.

Report: WWE Interested in Ronda Rousey Match at ‘WrestleMania 33’

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey could be headed to World Wrestling Entertainment, according to a report from Forbes.com . On the heels of the UFC’s announcement that former heavyweight king Brock Lesnar return to MMA against Mark Hunt at UFC 200 , speculation has run amok as to what, if anything, the WWE was getting in return. While the exact details of the UFC-WWE agreement for Lesnar to return to the cage remain a mystery, Forbes reports that the pro-wrestling organization is hoping to get Rousey to compete inside its ring. According to the report, WWE is looking to add some promotional juice to its “SummerSlam” show on Aug. 21 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. On top of that, Vince McMahon and company are hoping to be able to use Rousey at “WrestleMania 33” next April. Rousey made an appearance at “WrestleMania 31” in April 2015 but did not wrestle in an official match. UFC officials did not respond to a request for comment on the situation.

Luke Rockhold questions the character of 'classless' Michael Bisping

I love the fight game and all that it offers. It's a chaotic world we live in but the reward far outweighs risk. Allowing the pressure of the situation get to me, I felt the need to preform and make a statement as opposed to staying calculated and winning the fight. I underestimated my opponent and paid for it. Forcing a fight that was unlike me, which left the door open. Credit to Micheal for being the tough guy that he is and capitalizing on the situation. Verbal warfare and fight hype is one thing, but that moment following the outcome of a fight is where a man's true character shines. After our first fight I picked him up off the canvas and gave him his due respect. Bisping went out of his way to come across the cage not to shake my hand like a man but to further mock the situation. I felt it was a classless move on his part. Thus the reason I was so pissed off at the press conference. I don't believe in kicking a man while he's down. I've been here before and I've always learned and grew from these situations. This will be no different. I will go home, heal up, and come back better than ever before.

The Farm Report: Marat Gafurov Extends One Championship Rule

Meaningful MMA exists beyond the confines of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Bellator MMA and World Series of Fighting. In this monthly series, Sherdog.com recaps the month that was on the regional circuit in mixed martial arts: Cue the Ted Nugent classic. Marat Gafurov has a stranglehold on One Championship gold. The unbeaten Gafurov retained his featherweight title in the One Championship 43 “Kingdom of Champions” co-main event on May 27, as he submitted Kazunori Yokota with a second-round rear-naked choke at Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand. Yokota conceded defeat 4:25 into round two, the setback snapping his 13-fight winning streak. Fast hands and nimble feet were not enough to save Yokota, though he drew a smile from the champion with an early overhand right. Gafurov methodically imposed his will throughout the first round, dragging the two-division Deep champion and Sengoku veteran to the canvas on multiple occasions before transitioning between back mount and full mount. It was a harbinger of what was to come. Gafurov seemed content to trade in round two, and the challenger obliged.

Opinion: How Should We Remember Shane Mosley?

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. The saying goes a little something like this: “It’s not how you start; it’s how you finish.” If that’s the case, there are so many boxers who have ruined how they will be remembered simply because they chose to limp to the finish line. Well, not necessarily ruined, but there is a certain amount of discoloration that blemishes a remarkable career when a fighter is unable to sign off before competing becomes detrimental to his or her health. Some fighters’ greatest years outweigh whatever unwelcome memories we have of them. Fighters like Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali and the like established their legacies to the point where nothing could ruin them. However, there are fighters who manage to undo entire careers by refusing to let go. The latest fighter who can’t seem to get out of his own way is Shane Mosley. The former three-division world champion stumbled in his most recent comeback effort when he dropped a unanimous decision to relatively unknown David Avanesyan.

Dustin Poirier wants to give Bobby Green 'the gift of violence' at UFC 199

"Honestly what I see is a good athlete with natural abilities, natural fighting abilities with good timing but that's what he's fighting off of -- his natural ability. He's not out there refining it that well. He's just out there doing what he does," Poirier said. "We haven't seen the guy fight in a while, he could be busting his ass everyday and June 4 he's going to be the best guy he's ever been. Or he's been hanging out and he's going to get his show purse and go home.

Dana White is still waiting on Floyd Mayweather to discuss a McGregor fight

"Listen, Floyd has done a fantastic job of promoting himself. When Floyd was 'Pretty Boy' Floyd, nobody really cared. Then he became 'Money' Mayweather, and try to watch '24/7' or one of those types of shows without Floyd in it. It's painful," White said. "Floyd's good, man. Floyd knows how to sell. Floyd's a showman. He goes out and does crazy, extravagant things when he's filming. He's smart. He knows what he's doing.
