Whatever was left of the relative anonymity under which Marlon Moraes competed in the World Series of Fighting has disappeared. Moraes won for the 16th time in 17 appearances and planted his flag as a potential No. 1 contender in the Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight division, as he disposed of Jimmie Rivera with a first-round head kick and follow-up punches in the UFC Fight Night 131 main event on June 1 in Utica, New York. Rivera met his end 33 seconds into Round 1, his run of consecutive victories snapped at 20. UFC Fight Night 131 Post-Mortem: Boom Goes the Dynamite

Marlon Moraes and Jimmie Rivera locked horns in the UFC Fight Night 131 main event, as the Ultimate Fighting Championship on Friday made its debut in Utica, New York. The Top-10 bantamweights had a long history of bad blood, so it was no shock when they passed on the touch of gloves once referee John McCarthy brought them to the center of the Octagon for final instructions. It did not take long for the fight to play out. A mere 30 seconds into the opening round, Moraes uncorked a thunderous switch kick that connected flush with Rivera’s temple and sent him crashing to the canvas. Moraes swarmed immediately and delivered a flurry of punches that finished job. In the blink of an eye, a feud that had been built for the better part of a year came to a dramatic close, and Moraes was staring at a possible shot at the UFC bantamweight title. Afterward, Moraes was gracious in victory, thanking his teammates and coaches before turning his attention to the winner of the forthcoming rematch between current bantamweight champion T.J.

Dana White: UFC working with commissions to get rid of early weigh-ins

“So we’re looking to go back to at 4 o’clock when we do the (ceremonial) weigh-ins, that will be the real weigh-ins. The other thing is, I don’t know any fighters that are morning people. Most of them stay up half the night and sleep half the day, so that might have something to do with the morning weigh-ins (being a problem), too. You have to get up early to make sure you’re on weight.”

The Film Room: Robert Whittaker

UFC 225 is now available on Amazon Prime . After nearly a year of inaction, Robert Whittaker will make his much-anticipated return this Saturday in Chicago, where he defends his Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight title against Yoel Romero in the UFC 225 main event. The latest installment of The Film Room examines some of the strategies and techniques that define “The Reaper.” Whittaker began training in martial arts at 6 years old when his father enrolled him in a Goju-ryu karate school. Eight years later, he earned his black belt in the discipline and decided to switch his training to Hapkido following a move to Menai, New South Wales. Shortly after switching to Hapkido, his dojo was transformed into an MMA gym to capitalize on the rise of the sport, and Whittaker had no choice but to switch disciplines yet again. Whittaker was not a fan of the move at first but soon fell in love with mixed martial arts and decided to make a career out of it. Whittaker had his first professional MMA bout at 18 years old and amassed a 9-2 record in just three years before being cast on “The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes” in 2012.

“It’s not the weight-of-the-world pressure, like with all the talk of I shouldn’t be here to begin with and I definitely should’ve gotten cut after the last fight,” Punk said. “I’m probably on the chopping block, but who knows? Maybe not. I don’t look past Saturday. It’s not like I’m tired of training and I’m sick of training and I wish I was doing something else or I have my eyes set on doing movies or becoming a pro golfer or working in the mailroom somewhere. I still enjoy training every single day. I still am fortunate that can be my full-time job. I train with guys who have one or two other side jobs, and I see how hard they work, and it just motivates me to work even harder. We’ll have to see what happens Saturday night, and then maybe it’s a question for Sunday morning. But I’ve got all the confidence in the world in myself and mostly my team.”

Coach Duke Roufus says CM Punk has a quality that some UFC fighters lack |

“Way better,” Roufus told MMAjunkie this week, when asked ho much Punk has improved since his bout with Gall. “The first [fight] is a roll of the dice. You’ve got to take a gamble and see how your guy’s going to react in there and deal with a real fist fight. That being said, Mickey Gall was a very tough opponent. It was a tough first out. But I’m glad he got someone like Mickey Gall because when someone will take the licks that he did and the setbacks and want to come back for more, I know he’s made of something special.”

5 reasons to watch PFL 1 – the start of a rebirth of the problem-plagued WSOF

The MMA landscape is pretty full. To attract fighters, a promotion has to present something a little different. PFL accomplished that by offering some hefty (by MMA standards) payouts in its tournament structure. Fighters who are eliminated in the quarterfinals will earn $50,000, and those who fall in the semifinal round will be paid $100,000. The runner-up in each weight division will take home $200,000, while the winner will bank $1 million. That format attracted a deep pool of talent that includes former Bellator, WSOF and Titan FC champions, as well as an ex-UFC title challenger.
