In the Shadow of The Monster

He was so full of stories by the end, he decided to write a book. Kevin could never sit still long enough to type, but Elizabeth Randleman could paint her husband’s words the way they deserved to be painted, so together they lounged for hours under the night sky in their backyard, Kevin telling his tales –€” tales of becoming UFC heavyweight champion, tales of becoming a Pride Fighting icon –€” Elizabeth copying notes shorthand into her blue binder, then carrying it inside to unload into something digestible. The yard was Kevin’s escape, more tropical than it had any right to be in the middle of the Nevada desert, and those nights became cathartic, the two of them reminiscing about the old days, the days of spectacle and pageantry, of backstage brawls and shadow warriors from distant lands reigning as kings.

Mark Hunt: I'll make Brock Lesnar understand 'he should have stayed retired'

"I understand he's a real competitor and that's good. In the end for me, it's just going to be one little hit and then it's over. See you later," Hunt said. "Go back to doing whatever you're going to do. He's got an itch to scratch and I understand that cause I'm the same way myself. He doesn't want to have these sort of regrets and that's fine.

Miesha Tate: ‘Ronda Rousey Is Mentally Unstable’

“I think Ronda is somewhat emotionally unstable and I think that’s been characteristic for a long time. Doesn’t mean she fights any worse for it. I’m not knocking her as an athlete but emotionally she’s just got some things that are a little bit strange and I think that that was one of them.” “I feel like you can tell a lot about a person who, if they’re nice to people that they don’t have to be nice to or if they’re not nice to people that they don’t have to be nice to, and I feel like things that sometimes people don’t see on the massive media outlets is the way Ronda is behind scenes.”

8 Matt Brown: Tyron Woodley 'is an easy fight for Robbie Lawler'

"I think it's an easy fight for Lawler," Brown said. "I think it's sort of, I don't know if I'd say gimme fight, but I mean it's definitely, this is the type of fight Lawler should shine in. He's an extremely hard guy to take down and has all the tools on the feet, obviously, to knock Woodley out. Woodley has a chance in the early rounds and I think that's probably about it."

Lesnar Given 4-Month Waiver On UFC’s Drug Testing Requirements

“On June 6, 2016, UFC heavyweight Brock Lesnar was registered by USADA into the UFC Anti-Doping Policy testing pool. As part of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, UFC may grant a former athlete an exemption to the four-month written notice rules in exceptional circumstances or where the strict application of that rule would be manifestly unfair to an athlete. Given Lesnar last competed in UFC on December 30, 2011, long before the UFC Anti-Doping Policy went into effect, for purposes of the Anti-Doping Policy, he is being treated similarly to a new athlete coming into the organization.

Aljamain Sterling Finding the Value in Being UFC Fight Pass Headliner

When unbeaten Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight prospect Aljamain Sterling signed a new contract with the UFC, he was of the understanding that he’d find himself in a better situation to market himself. So you can imagine how he felt when he landed the UFC Fight Night “Almeida vs. Garbrandt” Fight Pass headliner slot on Sunday against Bryan Caraway . It was the right opponent, but not necessarily the spot he anticipated. “Initially, I’m not going to lie, I was pretty upset about it first,” Sterling said during a recent media lunch. “I called my managers and said ‘Dude, what is going on?’ I thought, for sure, I was main event material.” The No. 4 ranked bantamweight admits that he wasn’t too happy that a pair of bantamweights that he’s ranked higher than ended up in the main event spot with Thomas Almeida at #7 and Cody Garbrandt unranked, but after he talked to the general manager of Fight Pass, he acquiesced and understood why he was fighting in that spot. “After getting on the phone with (UFC Fight Pass general manager) Eric Winters I understood their vision,” Sterling explained.

Postal Connections: Diaz vs. McGregor, Bellator Lawsuit & Cleveland’s Champ

It’s been another banner week for mixed martial arts news and we have the questions to prove it. Be it Nate Diaz doing his thing or Conor McGregor and the persistent Floyd Mayweather Jr. nonsense that keeps swirling around the MMA world, there is plenty to talk about in this week’s edition of Postal Connections. So, without further ado, away we go. Did you hear Nate Diaz on the MMA Hour yesterday? He sounds like he is part delusional and part Rain Man when it comes to how the promotional business is run. Me and my friends all love the Diaz brothers and I hope he gets paid but I don’t think he is going to get what he wants. What do you think? – Aaron Haha, nice description of Nate. Honestly, the Diaz boys have always had what is, sadly enough, a unique view of what they, as fighters, are worth and the comments Nate has made in the aftermath of his upset over McGregor and the purported rematch mirror those of Nick at various times in his career. They understand that they are the people the audience is showing up to see and that there is a number that makes the hardship that goes into training and competing for a fight all worthwhile.

On Wednesday evening, I awoke from a nap to find my Twitter mentions filled with screenshots from CNN's coverage of a Donald Trump campaign rally in Anaheim, California. While I was caught off guard initially, it wasn't long before my sleepy eyes recalibrated and focused on the enormous upper body bust of Tito Ortiz : his chest, shoulders and head making him appear twice the size of every other human in the hard camera-facing gallery. @jordanbreen @TheSavageTruth @TJDeSantis it appears Tito Ortiz is a Trump supporter... — Cody Harms (@cgharms) May 25, 2016 Mixed martial arts fans love to make fun of Ortiz and frankly, with good reason. Ortiz's outlandish excuse making, hilarious malapropisms and generally over-the-top persona have made him an easy target of mockery over the last decade or so. Having him front and center supporting the most polarizing, bombastic demagogue in recent memory is too delicious and too expected to resist.

Report: WWE Interested in Ronda Rousey Match at ‘WrestleMania 33’

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey could be headed to World Wrestling Entertainment, according to a report from . On the heels of the UFC’s announcement that former heavyweight king Brock Lesnar return to MMA against Mark Hunt at UFC 200 , speculation has run amok as to what, if anything, the WWE was getting in return. While the exact details of the UFC-WWE agreement for Lesnar to return to the cage remain a mystery, Forbes reports that the pro-wrestling organization is hoping to get Rousey to compete inside its ring. According to the report, WWE is looking to add some promotional juice to its “SummerSlam” show on Aug. 21 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. On top of that, Vince McMahon and company are hoping to be able to use Rousey at “WrestleMania 33” next April. Rousey made an appearance at “WrestleMania 31” in April 2015 but did not wrestle in an official match. UFC officials did not respond to a request for comment on the situation.

Joe Rogan

“One of the most complex and exciting stand-ups working in America today.  Like an idealistic hippy stuck inside the body of a testosterone-pumped US marine.  He’s been likened to late great US comedians such as Bill Hicks and Sam Kinison, but although he exhibits a similar brand of furious indignation, his observations and revelations are entirely his own.  His angry, insightful act is an absorbing battle between his raw libertarian instincts and his refined liberal sensibilities.”   -- William Cook, The Guardian   A standup comedian for more than 20 years, Joe Rogan sells out theaters internationally with his inquisitive and intense comedic style. His comedy special “Joe Rogan: Live from the Tabernacle” was released in December 2012 via his website. Rogan previously starred in two hour long specials, “Talking Monkeys in Space” (2009) and “Joe Rogan Live” (2007), and released the CD’s “Shiny Happy Jihad” (2007) and “I’m Gonna Be Dead Someday” (2000). Rogan is host of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” a twice-weekly long form conversation with guests that is one of the most popular comedy podcasts on iTunes.

ONE Championship 43 video highlights, including a 6-second KO punctuated by a soccer kick to the head

But the fight everyone is talking about lasted only six seconds and featured two strikes – and probably should have only featured one. Timofey Nastyukhin (10-2) knocked out Rob Lisita (14-8) in just six seconds in their 161-pound catchweight fight. One punch put Lisita out cold – but Nastyukhin got off a legal soccer kick to Lisita’s head before the ref could get in, bringing a level of controversy to the finish and a renewed conversation about whether soccer kicks should be allowed (they’re not legal in the Unified Rules of MMA).

Coach: Kimbo Slice ‘Wasn’t Feeling Well’ in Recent Weeks, Was Advised to Pull Out of Bellator 158

Like the rest of the mixed martial arts community, American Top Team coach Mike Thomas Brown was shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Kimbo Slice on Monday. “He had a good way of making people feel good, especially if a kid wanted a picture, an autograph or something. He just had a way of making that person feel special, and he went out of his way in situations like that,” Brown said during an interview on the Sherdog Radio Network. “The guy has a million friends. He just knew how to make people feel good.” After initially forging a relationship with Slice as he prepared to compete on “The Ultimate Fighter 10,” Brown served as his primary coach at ATT during the YouTube brawler’s comeback tour in Bellator MMA . “We became friends because I think he just trusted me and he had faith in what we were doing. He was training at the gym years ago when he was getting ready for the ‘TUF’ house, I believe. He was training with [ Ricardo Liborio ] and I was a competitor at the time,” Brown said. “So I would chat with him here and there in the gym.

Olympian & UFC Champion Daniel Cormier Named Honorary Chairman of Wrestling World Cup

“Wrestling in California is huge. The state championships draws massive numbers. I have a youth wrestling club, and every weekend, we wrestle in massive tournaments. The kids get to wrestle five, six times a weekend. In the LA area, this is a big deal, for people to be able to see wrestling at such a high level. The last time I was at the World Cup at the Forum, it was amazing. You can feel the history of the building. The team went out and had a fantastic performance. It will be a big crowd. People should not miss this opportunity to see the best in the world,” said Cormier.

Former Title Challenger Joe Soto Replaces ‘Kid’ Yamamoto at UFC Fight Night Ottawa

Onetime bantamweight title challenger Joe Soto will step in for Norifumi Yamamoto and face Chris Beal at UFC Fight Night Ottawa on June 18. Promotion officials announced the change on Thursday. UFC Fight Night takes place at TD Place Arena in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and is headlined by a pivotal welterweight showdown between Rory MacDonald and Stephen Thompson . A reason for Yamamoto’s withdrawal was not revealed. A Bellator and Tachi Palace Fights veteran, Soto made his Octagon debut in a 135-pound title bout against T.J. Dillashaw after original foe Renan Barao had weight-cut issues heading into the UFC 177 headliner. Soto lost that bout via fifth-round knockout and has since suffered defeats to Anthony Birchak and Michinori Tanaka in his next two promotional appearances. After winning his first two UFC bouts, Beal went 0-2 in 2015, falling to Chris Kelades via split decision and Neil Seery by unanimous decision.

Luke Rockhold, Michael Bisping exchange insults in expletive-filled shouting match

"All right, we'll see about that. When you're on the floor and you're looking up at the stars it's going to be '(expletive), I just lost my belt to a guy that came in on two weeks' notice,' took your belt that you worked so hard for on two weeks' (expletive) notice," Bisping said.

Jim Ross, Josh Barnett bring G1 Climax to the U.S.

“Their fundamental in-ring skills are very competitive with anybody in the world, WWE included. They have an old-school pacing, and fundamentally sound in the sense of how you apply holds. I detest the term, ‘Grabbing a hold’–that reeks of work and illusion, but applying a hold is reality-based, and it’s important not to allow your verbal presentation as a broadcaster to cause a disconnect with the viewer. They’re really good at pacing, and they don’t do too much that you can’t process what you’ve seen. They can create the emotion that was intended–if you work so fast, and everything is bump-bump-bump, then what are people processing? Too many punches means your opponent doesn’t know which one to sell–the first one? The third one? The eighth one? The pacing is good but the selling is great.”

Mamed Khalidov Retains Middleweight Title with Bizarre Performance in KSW 35 Headliner

Mamed Khalidov was successful in his first Kontrontacja Sztuk Walki middleweight title defense, but it was hardly a vintage performance. Khalidov (32-4-2) defeated Aziz Karaoglu (9-7) via majority decision in the KSW 35 headliner at the Ergo Arena in Gdansk, Poland, on Friday, extending his winning streak to 12 straight fights. Two judges scored the bout 29-28 for the 35-year-old champion, while a third submitted a 28-28 scorecard. However, he barely resembled the fighter regarded by many as one of the top talents outside the UFC. It was a bout that saw referee Marc Goddard warn Khalidov for timidity in the third round after the champion spent much of the contest flopping to his back in hopes of drawing his opponent into his guard. For the most part, Karaoglu ignored the invitations, which disrupted the rhythm of the fight as Goddard was forced to repeatedly call for one standup after another. However, Khalidov likely did enough work in the first and second frames to cement the victory. He successfully executed a single-leg takedown in round one and escaped a guillotine before moving to mount and then taking his foe’s back before the horn sounded.

Former Employee Zach Light Files Lawsuit Against Bellator MMA

Zach Light has filed a wrongful termination lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court against former employer Bellator MMA and parent company Viacom. According to documents obtained by Bloody Elbow’s Paul Gift , Light is protesting “certain illegal practices jeopardizing the health and safety of professional fighters and mixed martial artists all for the defendants’ profit and financial gain.” Light, who previously fought for the UFC and Strikeforce in his MMA career, was hired as Bellator’s Talent Development Director under former promotion head Bjorn Rebney. In the complaint Light alleges that Bellator’s business practices changed when Scott Coker become CEO in June 2014. Light makes several damning accusations toward the California-based promotion in the complaint. Light alleges that heavyweight fighter Ryan Martinez ’s medicals were forged prior to Bellator 126 in Phoenix on Sept. 26, 2014 and that fighters on the Bellator 131 card in San Diego submitted medicals performed by someone who was not a licensed physician.

Bellator 156 Gets Honeycutt-Parlo Main Card Bout, Two New Prelims

California-based MMA promotion Bellator announced Thursday that three more fights have been tacked onto the Bellator 156 card, which goes down on June 17 at Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif. Chris Honeycutt will move up to middleweight to take on Mikkel Parlo on the main card. Honeycutt, who last fought at Bellator 153, is coming off an impressive victory over Matt Secor in which “The Cutt” won a dominant unanimous decision. A lifetime welterweight, Honeycutt will likely have his hands full against Parlo, who is riding a two-fight winning streak; the Dane has won four of five overall. On the preliminary portion of the card is a showdown between Ben Reiter and A.J. Matthews , also at middleweight. Finally, Thiago Jambo Goncalves will take on Ricky Rainey in a welterweight encounter to round out the prelims. Bellator 156 will be anchored by the bantamweight championship between titlist Marcos Galvao and Eduardo Dantas . Chidi Njokuani will lock horns with Douglas Lima in the co-feature while Brandon Halsey will oppose John Salter in a 185-pound scrum.

‘Regular Guy’ Julio Pena Primed for Lion Fight 29 Bout with Travis Clay

Julio Pena is one of American muay Thai’s most promising prospects, and his skill set will be on full display Friday night at Lion Fight 29. The Massachusetts fighter is 4-0 as a pro and he’s been lighting up his opposition like torches inside the Lion Fight ring. The problem is, however, that Pena is already 36 years old and he knows time isn’t on his side in terms of turning his pro fighting career into a million-dollar empire. But his age doesn’t impede his desire to be one of the best at his weight and to hopefully capture a world title along the way. Pena has scored back-to-back highlight reel knockouts on national TV, and muay Thai fans already want to see the KO artist in against some of the best, though Pena freely admits that he’s not yet at that point. “I never go into a fight looking for a knockout,” he told in a recent interview. “I go in there with a game plan and I expect to do well and I do focus a lot on my power, but I never, ever go in there looking for it. I expect each fight to be a five-round battle. I’m still learning this stuff. I’ve been in muay Thai for about 10 years and I still have a long way to go.

Felix Biederman Joins Press Row

Every Wednesday, Administrative Editor Jordan Breen welcomes a member of the mixed martial arts media into “Press Row” on the blog. This week, Breen is joined by ”Chapo Trap House” host and political columnist Felix Biederman . On Monday, Miami brawler turned MMA superstar “Kimbo Slice” Kevin Ferguson passed away at the age of 42 due to heart failure. Following Kimbo's sudden and shocking death, Breen and Biederman eulogize and reflect on Ferguson's unique and unparalleled rise from Youtube streetfighting sensation and porn site bodyguard to one of the biggest draws in MMA history, as far as cable and network TV ratings are concerned. The pair dig into Kimbo's surprising path to infamous and legitimate celebrity, from his backyard fighting days, his infamous encounter with Sean Gannon , the importance of his tenure on “The Ultimate Fighter” and why TUF 10 was ultimately a squandered opportunity for the UFC. Breen and Biederman also discuss Kimbo's widespread fame and popularity outside of the mixed martial arts bubble, how it informed reactions to his death, the essential racial components to Kimbo as a pop culture symbol and the other idiosyncrasies that made Kimbo an MMA icon while never even approaching the status of a truly elite fighter.

Opinion: The Many Layers of Intrigue Behind Brock Lesnar’s UFC Return

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. For all the turmoil of the past few days in MMA, there have been some remarkable highs. Of course, Michael Bisping ’s shocking knockout of Luke Rockhold to finally claim the middleweight title after a 10-year journey is something that should be remembered. The sight of Nate Diaz holding his arms up in The Forum when it was announced that he’ll be facing Conor McGregor at UFC 202 proved that the Stockton fighter was a needle-mover after all. But, the shocking swerve that Brock Lesnar would be returning to the Octagon for a fight against Mark Hunt after nearly five years away left everyone with mouths agape. There’s so much to chew on here with Lesnar’s return and choice of opponent. The obvious question: How, exactly, did the UFC pull off this incredible coup? Even with an already stacked lineup, the most jaded fight fan still found it unforgivable that McGregor wouldn’t be fighting Diaz at UFC 200.

UFC 199 Salaries: Dan Henderson ($800K) Tops Payroll in Last Fight on UFC Contract

Dan Henderson completed the final bout his current Ultimate Fighting Championship contract at UFC 199 , and “Hendo” earned an event-high purse in the process. Lombard earned $53,000 in defeat. on Monday published payroll information from the event released by the California State Athletic Commission. Bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz was the card’s next highest earner, pocketing a total of $350,000 for his successful title defense against Urijah Faber ($160,000) in the night’s co-main event. Headliners Michael Bisping and Luke Rockhold both took in $250,000 for their middleweight title clash, with Bisping earning no disclosed win bonus for his upset victory. Note: The disclosed purses reported by state athletic commissions do not include any performance-based or discretionary bonuses that may be awarded to a fighter by the promotion.

Shane Mosley, David Avanesyan On Weight for Welterweight Title Eliminator

A few years ago Shane Mosley was an afterthought in the world of boxing. He had seen plenty of better days and had gone 1-4-1 in five fights including a knockout loss to Anthony Mundine. But “Sugar” Shane (49-9-1, 41 KOs) has had a resurgence of sorts and after winning two in a row, he finds himself in a position virtually nobody expected: in line for a world title. On Saturday night at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, the future Hall of Famer will take on David Avanesyan in a 12-round WBA welterweight title eliminator. The winner will then face the winner of the Keith Thurman-Shawn Porter mega fight next month. At Friday’s weigh-ins, both fighters cleared the 147-pound limit, giving their tussle the green light. Avanesyan (21-1-1, 11 KOs), the WBA “interim” champion at welterweight, tipped the scale at 146.7 pounds. Mosley, meanwhile, officially checked in at 146 pounds. Their title eliminator will be televised live on CBS Sports Network starting at 10:30 p.m. Et/7:30 p.m. PT.
