Daniel Cormier Returns to Conan O'Brien After Breaking the 'Conan Curse' | MMAWeekly.com

Daniel Cormier is the first ever fighter to hold both the heavyweight and light heavyweight championships in the UFC but more importantly he may have broken a curse attached to late night host Conan O'Brien. On Tuesday night, Cormier returned to speak to the well-coiffed talk shot host just days after defeating Stipe Miocic to win the title after he nearly cancelled his appearance on the show prior to the event. It turns out thanks to some research from Cormier that he discovered every fighter who had previously appeared on O'Brien's show had suffered a loss immediately afterwards. From Ronda Rousey to Conor McGregor, O'Brien's interview was apparently a precursor to disaster and Cormier nearly cancelled his appearance on the show out of superstition ahead of his fight. The good news is Cormier broke the dreaded 'Conan curse' with his first round knockout against Miocic and he returned to the show on Tuesday to celebrate with the minority owner in the UFC. Heavyweight, Female Featherweight Cast of ‘The Ultimate Fighter 28’ Revealed

The cast for 28th season of “The Ultimate Fighter” has been released. The latest iteration of the long-running reality series will feature a lineup of eight male heavyweights and eight female featherweights coached by Robert Whittaker and Kelvin Gastelum . The show will debut on Fox Sports 1 on Aug. 29, and the finalists of each weight class will square off for a six-figure UFC contract at the “TUF 28” finale on Nov. 30 at the Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Whittaker, the reigning 185-pound champion, will defend his crown against Gastelum at a date that will be determined in the near future. The heavyweight portion of the cast includes Josh Parisian , who scored a spinning back fist knockout of Greg Rebello on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series to earn a spot on the show. Former ACB, Bellator and BAMMA competitor Przemyslaw Mysiala , with 32 professional bouts, is the most experienced heavyweight of the bunch. On the women’s side, Larissa Pacheco attempts to earn her way back in the Las Vegas-based promotion after an 0-2 stint at bantamweight from 2014-2015.

The semifinals of the 2018 Bellator Heavyweight World Grand Prix begin Friday, Oct.12 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. 6 Dana White's Contender Series 12: Grading the winners

Turner may not have scored a contract, but Dana White made sure to state that officials have their eye on him – and smartly so. There’s a ton of athletic upside to the 6-foot-3 lightweight, who already fights beyond his years. Given that Turner is still young and competes in what is traditionally the deepest division, I’m not sure he’ll be on the shortlist for last-minute replacements on a televised card, but I could see him making another appearance on a future Contender Series show sooner than later.

Stipe Miocic to Daniel Cormier: 'Let's dance again and get a rematch' before you retire

Cormier (21-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) knocked out Miocic (18-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC)  in the first round of their pay-per-view headliner at UFC 226 this past Saturday. A right hook from the clinch caught Miocic and sent him crashing to the mat, snapping a record-setting run of three title defenses and putting Cormier in the history books as one of only two men to simultaneously claim UFC titles in two divisions.

UFC President Dana White Believes Paulo Costa Could Be ‘Next Big Brazilian Star’

Paulo Henrique Costa has both the look and the penchant for finishing fights that could make him a talent to watch in the coming months. The 27-year-old known as “Borrachinha” mowed down “The Ultimate Fighter 17” finalist Uriah Hall in their preliminary middleweight tilt at UFC 226, winning via technical knockout 2:38 into the second frame. The former Jungle Fight champion swarmed Hall near the fence, putting his opponent away with a devastating right uppercut to the body. “This is just one more victory on my way to the world title,” Costa said. “Now I want to face a top fighter, I want to fight Chris Weidman . No one in this division can win against me, I’m the most powerful middleweight and I’m showing that in every fight. Uriah had very good timing and connected the jabs, but I knew he would not be able to handle my power. I’m ready for the next battle.” Costa is now 4-0 in the Las Vegas-based promotion and 12-0 as a professional overall, with all of his triumphs coming inside the distance. Whether or not he gets Weidman next remains to be seen.

UFC Boise main-event breakdown: Is Junior Dos Santos too tall an order for Blagoy Ivanov?

The difference in cage size is ultimately the question I’m wondering heading into this contest. Though a small cage will probably benefit Ivanov more, I suspect that less square footage will also force Dos Santos to throw with an even higher urgency. Ivanov has never been stopped by strikes and recovers well, but he also has limited in-fight experience against this level of heavyweight striker, making me believe that Dos Santos may audit the Bulgarian’s defenses for a building stoppage late into the fight.

Geek for Technique: Best Moves from UFC 226 Prelims

International Fight Week 2018 has come and gone and we are now left with the fallout of some of the best and worst performances of the year. UFC 226 was the biggest card of the year, and despite losing a title fight between Max Holloway and Brian Ortega , it still delivered some of the most exciting fights of the year. Today we go over the best moves from UFC 226 prelims. Don’t Sleep on Hooker It was a big weekend for New Zealand fighters, with Dan Hooker providing the first memorable moment from UFC 226 with his spectacular knockout of Gilbert Burns . Early in the fight, Hooker dropped Burns with a beautiful counter right straight that just grazed the nose. Sensing the finish was near, Hooker picked up the pace and backed Burns against the cage before landing a counter lead hook that finished the grappling prodigy. Hooker has been with the Ultimate Fighting Championship since 2014 but hasn’t garnered the respect from fans and media that he deserves. He has proved to be one of the best strikers in the division and at only 28 years old, he has a bright future in the UFC’s most stacked division.

How Israel Adesanya Became the Middleweight Division’s Newest Problem

International Fight Week 2018 has come and gone, leaving the combat sports universe with some of the best and worst performances of the year. Outside of Daniel Cormier , Israel Adesanya may have stood out most. The undefeated kickboxer intelligently dismantled Brad Tavares in “The Ultimate Fighter 27” Finale headliner on July 6 and has the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s middleweight division shaking in its collective boots. What were some of the techniques and strategies Adesanya used to pick apart Tavares across five rounds and announce himself as a legitimate contender at 185 pounds? Take a look: Striking Masterclass Ahead of their encounter, many thought Tavares’ experience would be too much for a fighter making just his third appearance in the Octagon. However, those who have followed Adesanya’s kickboxing career knew he had the striking skills to hold his own with anybody in the division. Many kickboxers have a difficult time transitioning to MMA because of the smaller gloves, the threat of grappling exchanges, the shape of the cage and a host of other differences between the sports.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Man of the Hour

Though he may never fully escape the shadow of archrival Jon Jones , Daniel Cormier now has his own moment in the sun to which he can point. Already in possession of the Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight title, the American Kickboxing Academy ace laid claim to the undisputed heavyweight crown with a first-round knockout of Stipe Miocic at UFC 226 on July 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The end came 4:33 into Round 1, as Cormier joined Conor McGregor as the only fighters in UFC history to hold championships in two weight classes simultaneously. The landmark win moved “DC” all the way to the heavyweight penthouse in the latest Sherdog.com divisional rankings. Some of Cormier’s contemporaries did not fare quite as well. Francis Ngannou , who held down the No. 2 spot in the heavyweight division prior to UFC 226, lost a unanimous decision to Derrick Lewis in one of the worst fights in the promotion’s history. Neither Ngannou nor Lewis seemed willing to engage in their co-main event, as they circled one another for 15 forgettable minutes and combined to land just 31 total strikes.

Former UFC Welterweight Nicolas Dalby to Return to Action at Cage Warriors 96

Nicolas Dalby will look to turn around a three-fight skid on familiar soil. (Photo Credit: Ryan O'Leary) Former Cage Warriors welterweight champion Nicolas Dalby will be back in action, back in the country where he won the title. The 33 year-old “Lokomotivo” was announced as part of the Cage Warriors 96 card on Sept. 1 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK. Dalby’s last appearance was an incredible three-round war with Carlo Pedersoli at Cage Warriors 96 in April, which the victorious Pedersoli used as a springboard to a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship . Dalby, meanwhile, steps back into the cage looking to overturn a three-bout skid that includes the Pedersoli fight as well as two consecutive losses to end his own four-fight UFC run. Nine more names were announced for the incoming card by the British promotion on Wednesday morning: Sam Creasey , Jack Grant , Shawn Kenny , Elliot Jenkins , Coner Hignett , Adam Ventre , Mick Stanton , Liam Gittins and Anthony O'Connor . In the main event of CW96, local Liverpool hero Paddy Pimblett will vie for lightweight gold against Soren Bak .

Everything You Need to Know About the Weekend in Boxing

When the Danny O’Connor-Jose Ramirez fight got cancelled after O’Connor’s bad weight cut , the opportunity for another fighter to rise to the occasion and make a huge statement this weekend arose. Unfortunately, nobody did, and the weekend was a largely forgettable one in the world of boxing. However, there were a few good wins from a couple of notable fighters that do warrant mention. On the Fresno, California, card which was supposed to be headlined by the Ramirez-O’Connor matchup, the fight between Egidijus Kavaliauskas and Juan Carlos Abreu was moved to the main event spot. Kavaliauskas, the Lithuanian former Olympian who goes by the nickname “the mean machine,” remained undefeated by winning a unanimous decision over the Dominican, despite suffering a cut due to an accidental headbutt in the fight’s opening round. The fight was a rather dull one, with neither fighter looking especially impressive and Bob Arum complaining about the referee allowing too much holding in a post-fight interview. Arum expressed a desire to see Kavaliauskas face Terence Crawford in October, which would be a terrible fight and a waste of everyone’s time.

Jon Jones breaks silence after Daniel Cormier triumph, says life is 'journey and not a race'

But until UFC anti-doping partner USADA announces a resolution to his second alleged anti-doping offense, Jones can’t do much to back up his numbers. A positive drug test for the steroid turabinol prompted the UFC to strip him of the light heavyweight title and reinstate Cormier as champion after a knockout victory one year ago at UFC 214. Cormier went on to defend the belt before announcing his conquest of the heavyweight title held by Miocic.

What fans would come to wonder in the years following this event was whether it represented a high water mark for MMA and the UFC.
