What to Watch For: Bellator 181

Derek Campos has a score to settle with Brandon Girtz , and Bellator MMA has provided them with the platform. The two lightweight rivals will meet for the third time in the Bellator 181 main event on Friday at the Winstar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma. Each man holds a decisive victory over the other: Girtz knocked out the Mohler MMA representative in 37 seconds in November 2015, avenging a unanimous decision loss to Campos two years prior. The Girtz-Campos rubber match highlights a four-fight main card airing live on Spike at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT. Girtz was a two-time NCAA All-American wrestler at Minnesota State University, a Division II school in Mankato, Minnesota. The 32-year-old last appeared at Bellator 174 on March 3, when he moved up to 170 pounds and wound up on the wrong side of a three-round unanimous verdict against >Fernando Gonzalez . Girtz has compiled a 6-4 record since arriving in Bellator in November 2012, his stay highlighted by wins over Michel Quinones , Melvin Guillard and Poppies Martinez .

Angel DeAnda, Dan Spohn Top Week 2 Lineup of Dana White’s ‘Contender Series’

A light heavyweight duel between Angel DeAnda and Dan Spohn will serve as the headliner for Week 2 of “Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series.” The UFC on Tuesday announced the five-bout lineup for the card, which will take place on July 18 at The Ultimate Fighter Gym in Las Vegas and streams on UFC Fight Pass at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Four other bouts were announced for the upcoming card: Alfred Khashakyan vs. Sean O’Malley; Thanh Le vs. Lazar Stojadinovic ; Michael Cora vs. Sidney Outlaw and C.J. Hamilton vs. Casey Kenney . DeAnda, 32, enters the matchup on a six-fight winning streak. The Modesto, Calif., native last appeared at Tachi Palace Fights 31, where he scored a first-round TKO win over Mike Morales on May 18. “The Dream” is 18-5 as a professional, with 14 victories coming via knockout or technical knockout. Spohn, meanwhile, has been victorious in seven of his last eight appearances. “Dragon” notably went 1-3 during a brief stint in Bellator and also appeared on “The Ultimate Fighter 19” before losing to Patrick Walsh at the show’s finale in July 2014.

The Bottom Line: Why Isn’t Amanda Nunes Getting the Benefit of the Doubt?

Amanda Nunes ’ decision to pull out of the UFC 213 main event the day of the show was understandably greeted with great frustration from many fans. This year’s International Fight Week was plagued by fights falling through, this following notable cancellations each of the previous two years. To have the main event cancelled at the last minute was a stunning disappointment, and it was predictable that the news would be received very negatively. The form that negativity took was much more surprising. The UFC 213 main event cancellation quickly turned into an indictment of Nunes herself. UFC President Dana White pointed the finger directly at Nunes, arguing that she was physically capable of fighting and that the issue was 90 percent mental and only 10 percent physical. This opened up the floodgates and in quick order Nunes was to many the villain most responsible for the failings of UFC 213. She was ostensibly forced to release a statement defending herself and outlining her struggles with sinusitis amidst a flood of criticism. It’s baffling that Nunes isn’t being given the benefit of the doubt.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - A Pair of Wild Deuces

Nobody wants to be second best, but at least you are still better than just about everybody else. Courtesy of UFC 213 , we have two new No. 2s and one other sorely disappointed second banana. Now 7-0 as a middleweight, Robert Whittaker put on a sterling performance -- on one leg, no less -- in his makeshift headliner with Yoel Romero , becoming the first man to beat the Olympic silver medalist at 185 pounds. The 25-minute unanimous decision earned him the Ultimate Fighting Championship interim middleweight title and hopefully a date with real champion Michael Bisping later this year. Meanwhile, heavyweight rankings staple Alistair Overeem already had a crack at UFC gold last year and wound up knocked out by champ Stipe Miocic . Nonetheless, Overeem's rubber-match win over Fabricio Werdum at UFC 213 gave him a 2-1 lead in their rivalry and our second spot at heavyweight, the highest Overeem has ever appeared on our list. Of course, the most notable No. 2 at UFC 213 was Valentina Shevchenko , who was to have her day in championship court with Amanda Nunes , the last woman to defeat her, this time with UFC gold on the line.

UFC Fight Night 113 Primer: Golden Age Extends to Scotland

Like many of its closest European neighbors, Scotland has enjoyed a real golden age in MMA. It may not have a star like Michael Bisping or Conor McGregor to call its own yet, but it has a strong tradition in combat sports and a wave of fighters who have arrived in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and more than held their own. The procession has taken time, but the barrier to the big leagues has been broken. Robert Whiteford in 2013 became the first Scottish fighter to reach the UFC, and a host of others have since followed in his footsteps. The UFC visited Scotland two years later, and it immediately earned a reputation as a hardcore-fan hotbed. The promotion returns with UFC Fight Night 113 this Sunday at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland, for what promises to be a loud and eventful show. Fans will have three established hometown heroes to support, as well as Octagon rookie Danny Henry. He faces Daniel Teymur on the undercard. Stakes will be high in what could be a coming-of-age event for the country. Perhaps Scotland’s biggest MMA star will be featured in the co-headliner, as Joanne Calderwood takes on highly regarded American prospect Cynthia Calvillo in a pivotal battle at 115 pounds.

MMA’s Greats of the States | West Virginia: Brian Bowles

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it.

A native of Rome, Italy, Sakara enters the matchup on a three-fight winning streak. UFC 213 Prelim Ratings Fall Short of Recent International Fight Week Standards

The preliminary card for UFC 213 attracted 657,000 viewers to Fox Sports 1 on Saturday night, well below the prelim ratings for recent International Fight Week cards. Preliminary cards for the last two International Fight Week pay-per-view events, usually a signature weekend for the UFC, drew 1.7 million viewers (UFC 200) and 847,000 viewers (UFC 189). According to a report from MMAFighting.com , UFC 213 had the lowest rated prelims for a pay-per-view offering since 2014, when UFC 179 attracted 536,000 viewers to FS1. The UFC 213 prelims featured a heavyweight bout between Alexey Oleynik and Travis Browne . Oleynik submitted Browne with a rear-naked choke 3:44 into the second round of their bout. The preliminary draw drew a 0.24 share in the 18-to-49 demographic, according to Nielsen. UFC 213 lost a couple key bouts from its main card, which could have contributed to the low numbers for the preliminary draw. Amanda Nunes pulled out of her bantamweight title defense against Valentina Shevchenko on the day of the bout, and a highly anticipated welterweight showdown between Robbie Lawler and Donald Cerrone was nixed a few weeks prior.

BJJ: Meet the fatbolo, a take on the berimbolo sans DLR hook by @gallerr

Be it for good or bad, the truth is the berimbolo works. And it is frequent for two opponents to pull to guard simultaneously to see who will berimbolo first. If you have short legs here, you are at a disadvantage. With that in mind, Leo D’avila created a variation he calls the fatbolo. Without using the de la Riva hook, the Atos Miami teacher feints a heel hook to seek his opponent's pants with the other hand and get started on the fatbolo in order to take the back.
