PFL President Carlos Silva Talks What's Happened, What's To Come

Professional Fighters League begins the second half of its season next Thursday at the Nassau Coliseum in Garden City, New York. Carlos Silva, the PFL League President, talked with Sherdog about the season so far, what gives the league unique value and other PFL-related topics. "The core of what we do is always fighters first,” Silva told Sherdog. “It’s not the ‘Professional Fight League,’ It’s the Professional Fighters League. It’s their league too.” Silva seems to genuinely feel the PFL and its format are more pro-fighter than any other promotion to date. From the league president you would expect to read nothing less, yet he may have a point. The PFL’s configuration is about putting a fighter’s monetary windfall in their own hands. Social media followers and the ability to self-promote will not dictate payouts. In the league’s points-based regular season standings, the only way fighters can maximize their chance to grab the million-dollar prize at the end of the season is by winning -- and winning quickly, as stoppage victories are weighted more heavily than decisions.

Daniel Weichel and the Pursuit of Vindication

Daniel Weichel heads into Bellator 203 this Saturday in the pursuit of championship vindication, as he challenges Bellator MMA featherweight titleholder Patricio Freire for the second time. Having been knocked out by Freire in June 2015, Weichel claims to be a more focused and well-rounded fighter ahead of their rematch. When he looks back on what cost him, the former M-1 Global champion’s thoughts are clear. “I think it was just my [mind telling me], ‘I want to finish this fight. I want to get this belt,” Weichel said, “and I got a little bit too pumped up.” Late in the first round, Weichel had “Pitbull” on the brink of defeat. “I felt him want to close the distance and move forward, so I instantly did a side backstep and countered with the right hand,” he said. The right hand connected and left Freire badly stunned. It should have been a prelude to victory, but unfortunately for Weichel, the bell sounded and essentially saved the defending champion. “My corner told me do exactly what you did in the first round,” he said.

Betting Odds Released for Cris Cyborg, Amanda Nunes Superfight

Waiting on you. @criscyborg #ufc232 December 29 Contrato assinado 29 de dezembro #ufc232 — Amanda Nunes (@Amanda_Leoa) July 12, 2018 The betting odds for a Cris Cyborg vs. Amanda Nunes superfight have been released, with Bovoda putting Cyborg as a moderate favorite over the Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight queen. The UFC is targeting UFC 232 on Dec. 29 for Cyborg’s for the bout, ESPN confirmed on Friday. Should Nunes pull off the upset, she would be the first two-time women’s UFC champion in the promotion’s history. Cristiane Justino -300 (1/3) Amanda Nunes +230 (23/10) The two champions have had a bit of back and forth on social media lately, with Nunes posting a signed bout agreement on Wednesday, a day after Cyborg tried to coax Nunes into fighting at UFC 228 in September instead: Both women are former Strikeforce fighters who have dominated their respective UFC divisions since joining in the promotion, with the featherweight class still very much in development. Cyborg is coming off of a first-round TKO over Yana Kunitskaya at UFC 222, while Nunes defeated Raquel Pennington in the fifth round at UFC 224 in May.

Volkan Oezdemir Out of UFC 227 Bout with Alexander Gustafsson |

With Gustafsson ranked No. 1 in the UFC light heavyweight division and Oezdemir sitting at No. 2, the winner would have made an almost undeniable case for a shot at current champion Daniel Cormier. That’s also assuming that Cormier eventually defends the belt, which isn’t a given considering he just wont the heavyweight title and is expected to put that on the line in a blockbuster bout with Brock Lesnar in early 2019.

Report: Broken Nose Forces Volkan Oezdemir’s Withdraw From UFC 227 Card

ESPN story on Volkan Oezdemir’s withdrawal from UFC 227 and what’s next for Alexander Gustafsson — — Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) July 19, 2018 UFC light heavyweight contender Volkan Oezdemir has pulled out of his UFC 227 bout against Alexander Gustafsson . ESPN was the first to report that he suffered a nose injury on Thursday. This marks the third time in just two months that Oezdemir has been forced out of a fight, with visa issues preventing him from fighting in May and this past weekend’s event in Germany. The former title challenger had been dealing with legal issues stemming from an alleged bar fight in Florida last year, but was cleared of a felony battery charge last week. UFC 227 takes place in Los Angeles on Aug. 4 and will feature two title fight rematches between bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw and former champ Cody Garbrandt as well as flyweight kingpin Demetrious Johnson vs. Henry Cejudo . It’s still unclear whether or not Gustafsson will remain on the card, as Ultimate Fighting Championship officials have yet to make a formal announcement yet on Oezdemir’s withdrawal from the card.

Kelvin Gastelum Believes His Skills Match Up Well with Champ Robert Whittaker

#BREAKING: @UFC champ @robwhittakermma, @KelvinGastelum to coach 'TUF 28'; title fight later this year — MMAjunkie (@MMAjunkie) July 7, 2018 An intriguing contest in the middleweight division is set to take place in 2019 when the current champion Robert Whittaker locks horns with Kelvin Gastelum . Last week, it was announced that the pair will be opposing coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 28. Traditionally, the coaches would compete shortly after the show concludes, although the fight will take place next year to allow Whittaker time to properly heal up from his last fight against Yoel Romero last month. Gastelum talked to the media recently about the fight with Whittaker and commended the champion for his performance against Romero and believes his own set of skills stacks up nicely to the Aussie’s (via ): “He’s good. He’s got a good heart. He showed in his last fight. He pulled through to get that win and obviously he’s got very good boxing. But I feel like I’m also a good boxer. My skills match up well with his.

Paulo Henrique Costa says Kelly Slater is ‘Completely Ignorant’ Regarding Doping Comments

BACK & FORTH❗️ @BorrachinhaMMA wins an absolute classic. #UFC226 A post shared by ufc (@ufc) on Jul 7, 2018 at 7:13pm PDT Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight Paulo Henrique Costa is fast becoming of the most feared 185-pound fighters in the division. Costa faced Uriah Hall on the preliminary card at UFC 226 on July 7 and Costa showed why his previous knockout of former welterweight Johny Hendricks back in November was no fluke. Costa was relentless against Hall and when the Brazilian smelled blood in the second round, he unloaded on Hall until the referee pulled him off. Costa is a big, overly muscular middleweight and against Hall he looked like a light heavyweight. The size of Costa has some fans, including surfing legend Kelly Slater, who believe the Brazilian is taking some sort of banned substance to achieve that kind of physique. Slater commented on the UFC’s Instagram page about “The Eraser” after his big win at UFC 226, accusing Costa of being “juiced.” ”Didn’t Cung Le get caught because he looked suspect in a photo after a fight?” Slater wrote.

These interim belts make the major belts insignificant to say the least. I don't consider anyone champ at 170 since no one ever beat GSP to begin with. After GSP retired, every joe that has held that belt, has been an interim champion. No one else can lay claim to that belt.

Claudia Gadelha Open to Rematch with Carla Esparza Later this Year in Brazil

Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s strawweight Claudia Gadelha took on Carla Esparza at UFC 225 in June winning via split decision, although it was marred by controversy as Esparza claimed Gadelha “greased up” before their bout, making her difficult to get a hold of. Gadelha defended the accusations made by Esparza, claiming that “The Cookie Monster” was just using excuses for how the fight played out and that these kinds of practices are a thing of the past and would be picked up by the athletic commission before she even entered the Octagon. A week before the fight, Gadelha suffered a knee injury which forced a change in her game plan as she was unable to stay standing for an extended amount of time and continually forced the takedown. The 29 year-old Brazilian has now undergone surgery to repair the knee and told MMA Junkie that she is open to a rematch against Esparza in September in Brazil: “We’re talking September, maybe a rematch with Carla in Brazil,” Gadelha said. “I’m still in shape. I feel good, I just need to take care of my knee.

Brock Lesnar Remains Under Indefinite Suspension in Nevada |

For one, Lesnar remains under suspension by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency for testing positive to a banned substance stemming from his UFC 200 bout with Mark Hunt. Lesnar initially defeated Hunt, but that was later changed to a no-contest after he was found to have had clomiphene in his system. Instead of fulfilling his USADA imposed suspension for violating the UFC’s Anti-Doping Policy, Lesnar retired. That caused USADA to put a freeze on his suspension and he now has to fulfill that suspension before he can fight again.

Fact check: Has UFC Boise's Dennis Bermudez finished every southpaw he's faced?

Sherdog Boxing: The Weekly Wrap

I’m returning August 25th, who do you think I’m going to be fighting? —— Ну ,что я возвращаюсь 25 августа в бой как вы думаете кто следующий соперник? A post shared by LOMA (@lomachenkovasiliy) on Jul 9, 2018 at 6:23am PDT As is so often the case, this week provided a few examples of unfortunate turns in the lives of boxers and a few matchups that are unfortunate turns for the sport. This week saw two high profile boxers being sought by the authorities, but for very different reasons. Victor Ortiz had a warrant issued for his arrest after he violated his probation stemming from a 2016 DUI . Ortiz failed to check in with his probation officer, then did not show up for a court appointment, resulting in the warrant. Ortiz’s career, and to some extent his life, have been a shame for such a likeable young man. After being stopped by Marcos Maidana in 2009, Ortiz famously declared “I was hurt, I'm not going to go out on my back; I'm not going to lay down for nobody. I'd rather stop while I'm ahead. That way I can speak well when I'm older. We'll see what happens from here on out [in regard to his future in the ring].

Twitter Mailbag: Is Daniel Cormier vs. Brock Lesnar a guaranteed hit?

It absolutely could. Yoel Romero is a scary dude for anybody, and against Cormier he matches up particularly well. I also think that, while it’s a far more legitimate and athletically meaningful fight than Cormier vs. Lesnar, it would bring in a fraction of the profits. The connoisseurs and the MMA heads would love that fight. The masses would flock to DC-Lesnar like it’s another superhero movie.

ONE Championship 77 results: Zebaztian Kadestam gets vicious third-round TKO over game Agilan Thani

The two wasted no time as the second round stated. This time, Thani was the one doing the chasing against the cage as Kadestam used his footwork to circle and avoid being backed up or taken down. Thani persisted on the takedown, pressing Kadestam against the cage, but Kadestam wasn’t having it. After two minutes, Kadestam advanced with some power-laced hands, but Thani was never dropped. Thani stated landing some solid shots of his own as the round advanced, and seemed like the most menacing presence in its final two minutes, but Kadestam was undeterred. As the final seconds approached, Kadestam ate a big head kick to the jaw as if it was no big deal.
