Sherdog Boxing: The Weekly Wrap

IT’S ON! @anthonyfjoshua will defend his WBA,IBF,WBA and IBO World heavyweight titles against Alexander Povetkin at @wembleystadium on September 22! New York press conf tomorrow and London on Wednesday pic.twitter.com/NDCn7EpgvX — Eddie Hearn (@EddieHearn) July 16, 2018 After Manny Pacquiao’s destruction of Lucas Matthysse last weekend, the conversation quickly turned to who the presumably rejuvenated 39-year-old would be fighting next. This week, that conversation became an absolute mess, with everybody pointing to a different opponent they would like to see Manny fight. Pacquiao’s strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortuna is pushing for a fight against Amir Khan , which he thinks would sell out the over 100,000 seats at Wembley Stadium. Bob Arum says that he wants to talk it over with Pacquiao, but that he is clearly pushing for a fight with either Vasyl Lomachenko or Terence Crawford (both of whom he represents). Manny himself would like to get a rematch with Floyd Mayweather , but it’s hard to see the public getting excited for that matchup after their first fight, no matter how good Pacquiao has looked lately or how much he tries to convince us his shoulder injury, and not Mayweather’s superior boxing, was his downfall in the first fight.

Report: UFC Strawweight Alexa Grasso Out of UFC Fight Night 135 Bout with Angela Hill

Ultimate Fighting Championship strawweight Angela Hill is in need of a new opponent after Alexa Grasso was forced off of their UFC Fight Night 135 bout, ESPN reported on Thursday. Grasso was pulled from the card due to undisclosed reasons and will now have to wait even longer to rebound from a decisive first-round submission loss to Tatiana Suarez in May. That loss was the first time Grasso had ever been finished in her 12-fight professional mixed martial arts career. Meanwhile, the UFC will likely find a replacement opponent for Hill (8-4), who is coming off of the biggest win of her UFC career after beating Maryna Moroz in February. UFC Fight Night 135 will take place in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Aug. 25 and will be feature a pivotal lightweight main event between Justin Gaethje and James Vick . No opponent has been named as of Thursday for Grasso’s replacement, although the full card and bout order have yet to be announced.

The Film Room: Mauricio Rua vs. Anthony Smith

Fresh off his knockout of Rashad Evans two weeks ago, Anthony Smith will get a chance to bring down another MMA legend when he battles former Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight titleholder Mauricio Rua in the UFC Fight Night 134 main event on Sunday in Hamburg, Germany. Although his best days have long since passed, “Shogun” finds himself on a three-fight winning streak -- his longest run of sustained success in more than a decade. However, the oft-injured 36-year-old Brazilian has not competed since March 2017. The latest installment of The Film Room series puts the Rua-Smith clash under the microscope. ‘Lionheart’ Smith started his MMA career at the age of 18 and oddly enough has more professional fights than Rua despite starting six years later. Prior to his current UFC run, he spent much of his time jumping from promotion to promotion and has made stops in Bellator MMA , Strikeforce , Cage Fury Fighting Championships and the Resurrection Fighting Alliance . Smith has proven himself a potent finisher, having delivered 26 of his 29 wins by knockout, technical knockout or submission.

Back on the mainland for more exams. Thanks @ufc and docs for following through to try and figure this out. Starting to feel better pic.twitter.com/aaXCGMpIgT — Max Holloway (@BlessedMMA) July 19, 2018 After Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight champion Max Holloway pulled out of his UFC 226 bout with Brian Ortega with “concussion like symptoms,” it sent a scare through the mixed martial arts world. Holloway didn’t seem like himself during the media day in the lead up to the event and shortly after it was revealed he was pulled off the card with UFC President Dana White claimed that he heard that the symptoms were possibly related to water poisoning, which is where a fighter drinks excessive volumes of fluid for their weight cut. It’s not the first time Holloway was forced off a card relating to a weight cut. At UFC 223, Holloway was scheduled to fight for the vacant undisputed UFC lightweight championship as a replacement for Tony Ferguson , although doctors made the decision days before the event that Holloway was in no condition to fight due to the massive weight cut and pulled him from the fight.

Palmer tacked on another win Thursday night in the main event of the PFL 4 card at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseim in Long Island, New York, as he thoroughly thrashed Jumabieke Tuerxun before submitting him in the third frame. Palmer out-struck the Chinese fighter nearly 75-1 and mauled him on the canvas. With time running out in the final round, “The Party” slithered onto Tuerxun’s back and eventually locked in a neck crank. “The Wild Wolf” tired like crazy to break free, but he eventually succumbed to the submission, tapping out at the 4:34 mark. The win gave Palmer four points towards making the 2018 PFL Playoffs at featherweight; it’s his third consecutive win. Featherweight contender Andre Harrison continued his dominance, as he controlled Nazareno Malegarie handily over the course of three rounds.

Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix Semi-Finalists Emelianenko, Sonnen Booked for Oct. 13

The finalists in Bellator MMA ’s heavyweight grand prix will be determined by Oct. 14, as the promotion is set to hold the remaining two semi-final bouts on the weekend of Oct. 12. Semi-finalists Fedor Emelianenko and Chael Sonnen are officially set to collide on Oct. 13 at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, New York, Newsday reported on Thursday. Sonnen and Emelianenko will compete just one day after fellow grand prix semi-finalists Ryan Bader and Matt Mitrione throw down on Oct. 12 in Connecticut. Emelianenko (37-5, 1 NC) knocked out former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight champion Frank Mir in under a minute in April to advance to the semi-finals, while Sonnen (31-15-1) defeated Quinton Jackson in January. Meanwhile, on the other side of the tournament bracket, Bader crushed Muhammed Lawal in May by way of a stunning 15-second knockout. Mitrione avenged a previous loss to Roy Nelson with a decision victory over “Big Country” in February. The winner of the tournament will be crowned Bellator’s heavyweight champion, occupying a throne that has sat vacant since Vitaly Minakov was stripped of the title in May 2016 for failure to defend.

Report: UFC Looking to Strip Covington of Interim Belt, Book Woodley vs. Till

Colby out son, it’s me & you now. Accept the fight!! — Darren Till (@darrentill2) July 19, 2018 The Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight division has been in a state of flux after divisional prospect Darren Till took to social media on Thursday to claim that interim welterweight champion Colby Covington had pulled out of his highly anticipated title fight against incumbent champ Tyron Woodley . Till’s social media post wasn’t necessarily taken seriously until ESPN’s Ariel Helwani reported hours later that the UFC was indeed looking to strip Covington of the interim belt and replace the brash American with Till for a title fight against Woodley. The UFC was initially interested in booking Covington vs. Woodley for UFC 228 in September; however, ESPN reports that “Chaos” wanted more time to prepare for the bout, insisting that the promotion push the fight to a later date. Till (17-0-1) makes for a logical replacement, as the undefeated Liverpool native is coming off of the biggest win in his career after defeating Stephen Thompson in May.

Despite having previously served a suspension for an anti-doping violation in relation to his UFC 183 bout with Nick Diaz in January of 2015, Silva’s suspension was only for one year because it was determined that his recent violation was because of a contaminated substance. If no reduction in sentencing had been applied due to the finding that Silva’s positive test was caused by a contaminated product, the standard sanction for a second violation involving a non-Specified Substance would have resulted in a four-year period of ineligibility.

Frankie Edgar, Chan Sung Jung Booked for November UFC Fight Night Card in Denver

Breaking: Frankie Edgar vs. Korean Zombie is “locked in” for Nov. 10 UFC Fight Night main event in Denver, per Dana White. — Brett Okamoto (@bokamotoESPN) July 20, 2018 Two Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweights will collide in a pivotal matchup come November, as Frankie Edgar is set to take on Chan Sung Jung in the main event of the UFC’s next stop in Denver on Nov. 10, UFC President Dana White confirmed to ESPN on Friday. Edgar rebounded from his first ever knockout loss at the hands of Brian Ortega by defeating Cub Swanson for a second time just a month later. Meanwhile, “The Korean Zombie” triumphantly returned from mandatory two-year military service in his native South Korea by knocking out Dennis Bermudez in the first round last year. Edgar nearly got the chance to avenge the Ortega loss at UFC 226, after featherweight champion Max Holloway was forced off of the card at the last minute due to “concussion-like symptoms.” Ortega ultimately turned down Edgar’s offer, and was pulled off of the card entirely. The Korean Zombie’s mandatory military service kept him out of action for nearly four years.

UFC President Dana White confirmed the tip after an initial report from ESPN. “Cowboy” (33-11) and “Platinum” are set to fight on the Nov. 10 card in Denver, with Cerrone looking to bounce back from a decision loss to Leon Edwards last month and Perry (12-3) aiming for a second victory in a row after taking a split decision victory over Paul Felder at UFC 226. UFC Fight Night 139 will mark the UFC’s 25th anniversary, with the card being held in the same city as UFC 1 back in 1993. Both welterweights are well-known as fan favorites with a tendency for violent finishes. In fact, Platinum’s recent decision victory over Felder was the first in his professional MMA career.

Sage Northcutt Didn't Feel Super at Lightweight, Feels 'Totally Different' at Welterweight | MMAWeekly.com

“Before the UFC, I was fighting at catchweights at 165 or 170. I decided that I wanted to go to 155 to have an advantage, or try to have as much of as advantage as I could to be one of the bigger 155ers. I walk around pretty lean all the time. I thought that would be a benefit, but even though I was undefeated at 155 – I’ve won five fights in the UFC at 155 – it just kind of played a toll on my body. I don’t feel like the same kind of Sage, same kind of exciting Sage I can be, and like finishing Sage,” he said.  “At 155 I don’t have that same kind of ability I don’t feel like at the moment.”

Colby Covington Insists He's Fighting Tyron Woodley, but Has a Plan B | MMAWeekly.com

“I think the storyline that makes the most sense, this is the biggest fight that the UFC’s gonna make this year. There’s still questions regarding when Conor’s coming back, who knows when he’s coming back. They don’t know when (Daniel Cormier’s) gonna fight again because he’s got a broken hand. So, this is the biggest fight that UFC can serve. So, if you wanna serve the biggest fight between Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington and ‘TyQuil’ Woodley, they need to serve it up at the world’s most iconic arena, and that’s Madison Square Garden in Manhattan New York. So, that makes the most sense for the fight.”

ESPN story on Volkan Oezdemir’s withdrawal from UFC 227 and what’s next for Alexander Gustafsson — https://t.co/prRsk6sUZj — Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) July 19, 2018 UFC light heavyweight contender Volkan Oezdemir has pulled out of his UFC 227 bout against Alexander Gustafsson . ESPN was the first to report that he suffered a nose injury on Thursday. This marks the third time in just two months that Oezdemir has been forced out of a fight, with visa issues preventing him from fighting in May and this past weekend’s event in Germany. The former title challenger had been dealing with legal issues stemming from an alleged bar fight in Florida last year, but was cleared of a felony battery charge last week. UFC 227 takes place in Los Angeles on Aug. 4 and will feature two title fight rematches between bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw and former champ Cody Garbrandt as well as flyweight kingpin Demetrious Johnson vs. Henry Cejudo . Traditionally, the coaches would compete shortly after the show concludes, although the fight will take place next year to allow Whittaker time to properly heal up from his last fight against Yoel Romero last month. Paulo Henrique Costa says Kelly Slater is ‘Completely Ignorant’ Regarding Doping Comments

BACK & FORTH❗️ @BorrachinhaMMA wins an absolute classic. #UFC226 A post shared by ufc (@ufc) on Jul 7, 2018 at 7:13pm PDT Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight Paulo Henrique Costa is fast becoming of the most feared 185-pound fighters in the division. Costa faced Uriah Hall on the preliminary card at UFC 226 on July 7 and Costa showed why his previous knockout of former welterweight Johny Hendricks back in November was no fluke. Costa was relentless against Hall and when the Brazilian smelled blood in the second round, he unloaded on Hall until the referee pulled him off. Costa is a big, overly muscular middleweight and against Hall he looked like a light heavyweight. The size of Costa has some fans, including surfing legend Kelly Slater, who believe the Brazilian is taking some sort of banned substance to achieve that kind of physique. Slater commented on the UFC’s Instagram page about “The Eraser” after his big win at UFC 226, accusing Costa of being “juiced.” ”Didn’t Cung Le get caught because he looked suspect in a photo after a fight?” Slater wrote.
