UFC Chicago By the Numbers

The Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight division continues to be in a state of upheaval. Valentina Shevchenko threw yet another wrench into the promotion’s plans, as she took a clear-cut unanimous decision over former champion Holly Holm in the UFC on Fox 20 main event in Chicago on Saturday night. While Holm may have seen a lucrative potential rematch with Ronda Rousey drift away in the Windy City, Shevchenko suddenly has a number of interesting options in front of her. The facts and figures don’t always tell the whole story in a fight, but in this case, the numbers showcase Shevchenko’s overall effectiveness. Here is a by the numbers look at UFC on Fox 20, with statistics courtesy of 33: Significant strikes by which Shevchenko outlanded Holm, the first time an opponent has outlanded “The Preacher’s Daughter” in five Octagon appearances. Shevchenko outlanded Holm 18 to 11 in round two, 14 to 4 in round three, 21 to 9 in round four and 21 to 15 in round five. Holm, meanwhile, held a 15-to-13 advantage in the opening frame.

Holly Holm Has Seen Better Days — Before and After Saturday’s Main Event

Former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm’s path back to gold was brought to a screeching halt at “UFC on FOX 20” after she got battered, bloodied, and bruised by Valentina Shevchenko for twenty five minutes straight.

4 UFC Fighters React To Holm’s Upset Loss To Shevchenko

The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s women’s bantamweight division seems to be in a constant state of evolution where nobody can predict what is going to happen next. Holly Holm dethroned Ronda Rousey for the championship just eight months ago at UFC 193, but she has since lost two fights in a row. The woman who defeated Holm for the gold in Miesha Tate was dethroned by Amanda Nunes.

Amanda Nunes: Shevchenko ‘Needs to Prove Herself a Little More’ Before Receiving Rematch

Amanda Nunes apparently wasn’t all that impressed with Valentina Shevchenko ’s performance. Shevchenko scored a significant upset at UFC on Fox 20 on Saturday night, taking a five-round unanimous decision triumph over Holly Holm in the evening’s main event at the United Center in Chicago. It was the second victory in three Octagon appearances for the Peru-based Kyrgyzstan native. Her lone defeat? A decision loss to the current 135-pound queen at UFC 196 this past March. Shevchenko made it quite clear — in her in-Octagon interview, on Fox Sports 1 and on the post-fight press conference dais — that a rematch with Nunes is at the top of her wish list following the signature triumph of her career to date. However, Nunes seems to have other ideas. The Brazilian, who captured the title with an emphatic first-round submission of Miesha Tate at UFC 200 on July 9, took to Twitter to express her thoughts on Shevchenko’s status in the bantamweight division. “I feel she needs to prove herself a little more,” Nunes wrote.

McGregor uploaded a snap of his own with the footballing legend, writing: “My brother Ronaldo dropped by the gym today! He is an animal. Thank you @cristiano, much respect! I will see you for that Forbes number 1 spot next year.

Valentina Shevchenko Outstrikes Former Champion Holly Holm in UFC on Fox 20 Headliner

Valentina Shevchenko beat Holly Holm at her own game. The Kyrgyzstani muay Thai machine announced her presence as a legitimate title contender in the Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight division with a five-round unanimous decision over Holm in the UFC on Fox 20 headliner on Saturday at the United Center in Chicago. All three cageside judges scored it 49-46 for Shevchenko (13-2, 2-1 UFC). Holm (10-2, 3-2 UFC) had a brief glimmer of hope in the first round, as she knocked down “The Bullet” with a short right uppercut. From there, it was all downhill. Shevchenko forced the former champion to lead, countering beautifully with sneaky right hooks and piercing jabs. The 28-year-old also targeted the inside of Holm’s lead leg with kicks and mixed in tactical takedowns when the mood arose. Shevchenko’s confidence grew as the rounds passed, and Holm appeared to be more and more gunshy in the face of consistent counterstrikes. Shevchenko has gone 6-1 across her last seven outings, falling only to Amanda Nunes , the woman who now holds the 135-pound crown.

Edson Barboza Ready for Five-Round Headlining Bout After UFC on Fox 20 Win

After an impressive decision triumph over Gilbert Melendez at UFC on Fox 20 , Edson Barboza believes he is ready to spend a little bit more time in the Octagon. “I have five guys in front of me in the rankings. If the UFC gives me one of those guys I’m ready. I think I’m ready to fight five rounds,” Barboza said on Fox Sports 1. “That’s my fourth co-main event. Please UFC, give me a chance to fight five rounds. I’m ready for this.” The 30-year-old Brazilian was in control for much of the fifteen minutes against Melendez, a former Strikeforce and World Extreme Cagefighting 155-pound champion. While “El Nino” rocked his foe with an overhand right in the second frame, his lead leg took a beating over the course of the bout, leaving him unable to provide the necessary aggression to sway the scorecards down the stretch. “Physically, I’m a bit banged up. My leg took a beating,” Melendez admitted. “In the third I was really trying to apply pressure and that left me open to that leg kick. It made it hard to pressure him because my leg got chopped in the third.

Ex-Champ Holly Holm Admits She ‘Could Have Done More’ in Loss to Shevchenko

Holly Holm ’s knockout of Ronda Rousey last November, a career-defining victory that turned the MMA world upside down, suddenly feels like it happened a lot longer than eight months ago. It was a somber Holm who addressed the media at Saturday’s post-fight press conference at UFC on Fox 20 following her five-round defeat to Valentina Shevchenko in the evening’s headliner at the United Center in Chicago. It was the second straight defeat inside the Octagon for the Jackson-Wink MMA standout, who believes she entered the fight with the proper tools necessary to defeat her opponent. Ultimately, she was unable to execute against a like-minded adversary. “We knew she was a counter puncher and we were ready for that. She is tough and I knew that. I knew I had my hands full in this fight. I knew it was a really big challenge. What can you do? I know it was a competitive fight and I could have done more,” Holm said. “I’m disappointed in myself and take nothing away from her. She was a very tough opponent.

Thoughts & Shots After UFC on Fox 20

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. *** Valentina Shevchenko and Edson Barboza on Saturday in Chicago increased their stock in their respective decisions with hard-fought but clear decision victories over former champions at UFC on Fox 20 . Shevchenko outpointed former Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight titleholder Holly Holm over five rounds, while Barboza busted up two-time Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez ’s lead leg en route to a unanimous three-round decision. Both fighters have positioned themselves as legitimate title contenders with the wins. Shevchenko was making just her third UFC start after a long and distinguished muay Thai career. Holm was trying to bounce back from a fifth-round technical submission loss to Miesha Tate that cost her UFC gold in March. After a fleeting knockdown of her opponent in the opening frame, Holm struggled to muster much of an offense, as Shevchenko was content to sit back and counter the former boxing champion.

Opinion: Time for an UFC-Invicta Merger

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. *** It wasn’t long ago that the conversation about women’s divisions in the Octagon started and ended with one word : never. Of course, a lot has changed since then -- namely, Ronda Rousey happened -- and now with the successful expansion of the strawweight division and solid showcase bouts at 125 and 140 pounds, the arguments that women’s divisions are untenable or uninteresting are dumber and more transparently antiquated than ever. The audience for female fighting is very real, and it’s continuing to grow as the quality of competition improves. That makes sense; mixed martial arts is now a legitimate option for female martial artists and athletes who otherwise had few avenues to pursue. The early days of the Ultimate Fighting Championship provided similar opportunities for non- and post-Olympic wrestlers, as well as fighters outside the pure boxing spectrum, so long as they were the appropriate gender.

UFC on Fox 20 Bonuses: Herrig, Wineland, Knight, Alers Receive $50K

Felice Herrig , Eddie Wineland , Jason Knight and Jim Alers all received $50,000 bonuses at UFC on Fox 20 on Saturday night. Fighting for the first time in more than a year, Herrig earned a “Performance of the Night” bonus with a quick submission victory over Kailin Curran in a featured bantamweight scrap. Herrig quickly transitioned to her opponent’s back after landing an early takedown, and sunk in a rear-naked choke 1:59 into round one. Meanwhile, former bantamweight title challenger Wineland captured the evening’s other “Performance of the Night” award with a third-round technical knockout of Frankie Saenz . Wineland buckled his adversary in the first round and then put the fight away in the third stanza with a right cross and a swarm of follow-up punches to earn a standing TKO at the 1:54 mark. Finally, Knight and Alers received “Fight of the Night” for a spirited 145-pound scrap earlier in the evening. While both fighters had their moments, Knight’s overall output proved to be the difference, as he blended an effective jab with punching combinations and kicks to the legs and body to capture a split verdict.

Beating the Odds: UFC on Fox 20

Eddie Wineland had a surprise for the oddsmakers. A modest +131 underdog according to, the former World Extreme Cagefighting champion took care of Frankie Saenz (-156) with third-round punches at UFC on Fox 20 “Holm vs. Shevchenko” on Saturday before an announced crowd of 10,287 at the United Center in Chicago. Wineland brought it to a close 1:54 into round three, as he recorded his first win in more than two years. Saenz survived a first-round knockdown and gathered steam as the fight moved along, as he utilized thudding leg kicks and high-output punching. However, Wineland floored the onetime King of the Cage titleholder with a slick counter right cross early in the third round, followed up with punches and forced the standing stoppage. Wineland was not the only fighter to beat the odds in the Windy City. Valentina Shevchenko (+156) sprang a mild upset on former Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight titlist Holly Holm (-185) in the main event. Shevchenko countered beautifully throughout, mixing in strategic takedowns and a heavy dose of inside leg kicks across a five-round unanimous decision.

Lopez, Reynoso Battle to Draw in ShoBox Main Event

Unbeaten super bantamweight prospect Adam Lopez had a heck of a time against Roman Reynoso in the biggest test of his career thus far, and while he didn’t come out of his main event battle with the win, he emerged without suffering a loss. Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket was the site of yet another edition of ShoBox: The New Generation on Showtime and the two contenders didn’t disappoint. Reynoso (18-1-2, 7 KOs) continually tried to slug it out with the quicker Lopez, which made for entertaining back-and-forth exchanges. Reynoso’s plan nearly backfired in the 10th, though, when Lopez (15-0-1, 7 KOs) staggered him with a stinging combo, but Reynoso hung tough until the final bell. In the end, the fight was too close to call and it wound up being declared a draw. One judge had it 96-94 for Lopez, the second saw it for Reynoso 97-93 and the final official had it even at 95-95. In the co-feature, super middleweight Jerry Odom torched Julius Jackson, ending the duel with one punch in the third. Jackson (19-2, 15 KOs) was drilled by a massive right to the face and he crumbled in a heap, out cold.

Varga Exacts Revenge, Takes Title Back from Adamchuk at Glory 32

After a dubious and highly-controversial encounter back at Glory 25 in Milan, the world wasn’t exactly going bananas over a rematch between Serhiy Adamchuk and Gabriel Varga. The fight was plagued by continuous clinching and horrific officiating and Adamchuk wound up snatching the Glory featherweight crown from Varga. But as the pieces continued fall in the world of kickboxing, Vargas worked his way back into title contention and on Friday in the main event of Glory 32: Virginia, the Canadian evened up the score with his Ukrainian adversary. While there weren’t anywhere near as many tie ups, there were plenty, but referee Chris Wagner was on top of things from the start and kept the fighters in check. The end result was a highly competitive, if not an entirely aesthetically pleasing duel. Adamchuk (33-6, 14 KOs) was never able to truly find a rhythm against his rival and when he was dropped by a torch of a left hook in the second, he couldn’t dig himself out of the early hole he fell into. Varga, who suffered a cut over his right eye early in the contest, was able to counter the defending champ and keep him off-kilter throughout and did just enough in the brief exchanges to lure the judges to his side.
