This New Device Will Clean 23 Metric Tons of Trash From The Ocean Every Day

The first Water Wheel, which was designed to look like an actual mill house, spent three years in trials, before being removed in 2011 because it could not keep up with the level of trash that was in the Harbor. The new Water Wheel was installed this May and in it’s first major trial it removed 50,000 lbs of trash from the harbor.

Nicholas Rubin, the concerned (but not-yet-old-enough-to-vote) citizen behind the plug-in, first became interested in the issue when he gave a school presentation on corporate personhood while in the seventh grade. About a year later, Lawrence Lessig — the Harvard law professor and activist — provided Rubin with further inspiration. “I went to see Larry Lessig talk about campaign finance at the town hall here in Seattle. Both of these events sparked an interest in me,” Rubin told “It made me angry. I remember asking my dad (multiple times) questions like ‘How is this legal?’”

Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman Revealed: 'Batman V Superman' Will Sink Or Swim On Wonder Woman

But if Snyder, Goyer, and Gadot deliver a genuinely iconic version of the then-74-year old character, then whatever other issues the film has will matter that much less. The very inclusion of Wonder Woman has already granted the film oodles of free press in publications otherwise unconcerned with a comic book adventure, and it will continue to do so as we all discuss and debate the ramifications of Wonder Woman finally getting a big-screen appearance 36 years after Christopher Reeve’s Superman made us believe a man could fly and 25 years after Michael Keaton silenced most of the naysayers as Batman. The paucity of representation comes with a perhaps unfair burden. Gadot’s every gesture and every line will be analyzed, both in terms of would-be faithfulness to each viewer’s preferred version of the character and her representation as a feminist icon, which is itself open to interpretation .

Pros Pick: Lawler vs. Brown

Robbie Lawler seeks a second shot at UFC welterweight gold. | photo: Jeff Sherwood/ Robbie Lawler and Matt Brown are the last men standing in the “Bigg Rigg” sweepstakes. American Top Team ’s Lawler will meet the surging Brown in the UFC on Fox 12 main event on Saturday at the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif., with the winner all but assured a shot at reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder Johny Hendricks . Lawler has posted a 4-1 record since returning to 170 pounds, a contentious unanimous decision defeat to Hendricks the lone blemish. Long established as one of MMA’s premier power punchers, the 32-year-old last fought at UFC 173 in May, when he scored a third-round technical knockout on Jake Ellenberger at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Brown has rattled off seven consecutive victories in emerging as the unlikeliest of title contenders. The onetime journeyman last competed at a UFC Fight Night event in May, when he took down the talented but enigmatic Erick Silva with third-round punches at the U.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Q&A

On that episode of Wake Up Call, we have an 18-year-old high-school dropout who has one dream: to become a UFC champion. Despite the fact that his mom is in prison and he dropped out of school, he’s a good kid with a big heart and a dream. I told him if he meets me halfway and puts in the hard work, then I’ll provide the tools he needs to achieve his dream. I called Dana to see if he’d come down to Florida and take a look at this kid and see if he had any potential. I knew I could count on Dana to give it to me and the kid straight without any bullshit. Not only did Dana fly all the way to Florida, but he brought Mike Dolce with him. They put that kid through the ringer with training, conditioning and a shot to become part of Coach Libo’s [Ricardo Liborio] American Top Team up the road from where we live. I won’t give it away, but let’s just say that we may see that kid, Terrell Moore, in the Octagon one day. I can’t thank Dana and the UFC enough for their support of Wake Up Call.

UFC on FOX 12 staff picks: Underdog Matt Brown gets some love

Two of eight MMAjunkie writers and radio hosts are predicting Brown (21-11 MMA, 12-5 UFC) will pull off the upset over fellow slugger Lawler (23-10 MMA, 8-4 UFC), who clash in the network-televised UFC on FOX 12 headliner at San Jose’s SAP Center.

Welcome to the UFC Richard Odoms

Odoms throws pawing strikes and kicks from the outside, looking for opportunities to load up on harder shots, or get into the clinch and cage control. While he still packs a lot of power in even small shots, his tentativeness on the outside, does make him a pretty easy target for well timed takedowns, as he tends to stand tall. When he does find a comfortable rhythm, Odoms tends to throw kicks with regularity and speed. His hands, are another matter. Punches tend to come as big, telegraphed sweeping strikes; huge hooks and uppercuts that opponents can see coming, but are powerful enough to do serious damage if they land. Essentially, he's the kind of competent heavyweight brawler that is dangerous in any fight, but will have trouble winning consistently with his current skill set.

UFC on FOX 12 play-by-play and live results

Round 1 – Touch of gloves to start the night. Siler wings out a few kicks to open, and Lahat tries to grab the leg. Lahat pushes quickly inside and takes the fight to the floor, avoiding Siler’s legs and settling into his opponent’s guard. Siler with a closed guard, tying things up underneath. He brings the left leg up into rubber guard and eventually brings the right, as well. Nothing there, but Lahat isn’t getting to do much from the top. Crowd wants a standup, and Jason Herzog gives it to them. We restart on the feet. Lahat scores with a nice right hand and then looks agains for the takedown. Siler defends, but he eats a left hand. Lahat the quicker fighter right now. He pushes inside for another takedown. Siler defends well, but Lahat ends up tossing him to the floor, anyway. Siler own’t stay there, and he crawls to his feet. Lahat controls against the cage, but he’s forced to pull away. Siler scores with a stiff jab. Siler kicks the legs and looks up at the clock with less than a minute left. Lahat gets inside and scores another trip takedown.

10 reasons to watch UFC on FOX 12 (don't be surprised two are the main event)

Welterweight champ Johny Hendricks can rest easy now as he recovers from a torn bicep , but his return promises a meeting with a monster. The winner of Saturday’s headliner between Lawler (23-10 MMA, 8-4 UFC) and Brown (21-11 MMA, 12-5 UFC) will be waiting for him as the first contender to his newly won title, per the UFC. It’s pick your poison time – either a rematch with Lawler, who probably took years off Hendricks’ career with the amount of punishment he doled out (and took, to be fair) when they met for the vacant belt at March’s UFC 171 event, or a meeting with savage finisher Brown. Stylistically, the latter seems like a better option for the champ, but it’s going to a tough road any which way.

Nam Jin Jo Takes Flyweight Title, Riki Fukuda Stops Dong Sik Yoon at Road FC 16

An emotional Nam Jin Jo captured the inaugural Road Fighting Championship flyweight title Saturday at Road FC 16 . Jo, who defeated Shooto champion Mikihito Yamagami in his February promotional debut, went up against fellow Korean youngster Min Jong Song in the show’s main event at Park Chung Hee Gymnasium in Gumi, South Korea. The flyweights spent much of the evenly matched first round clinched on the fence, jockeying for position and exchanging knees to the body. Both men scored takedowns but neither could capitalize off of the quick scrambles which followed. Although Song succeeded in bringing the fight back to the ground at the start of round two, his top position was nullified by Jo’s guard activity, as “The Running Man” had his head thumped with short punches and palm strikes from underneath. When Jo got back to his feet, he walked down Song with front kicks and heavy hooks before trying a guillotine choke and hitting a takedown to close the frame. (+ Enlarge) | Photo: Lee Li/ Nam Jin Jo claimed Road FC gold. Clinch work dominated the third round, with Jo spending much of the final five minutes roughing up Song against the cage.

Round 5: And here we go. Both guys spend the first 20 seconds slugging the shit out of each other. Brown knows he needs a finish here. Brown working some standing elbows with good success. Body kick from Lawler, followed by a left hand. They clinch against the fence, briefly. Lawler is cut now, too. Good knee to the body from Brown, and Lawler responds with a right hand. Brown lands a kick to the ribs. Lawler lands a left high kick. Brown with a left hook to the body. Powerful body kick from Brown. But Lawler lands one of his own and Brown is hurt. More back and forth, with both guys tearing into each other. Lawler with a kick, Brown catches it, Lawler spins around with a backfist. Lawler with another kick to the body. What a dogfight. Brown is tough as nails, but he must be in agony. Lawler smashes Brown to the mat, but Brown is quickly on his feet. The last horn sounds. Brown smiles at Lawler. The Immortal must know he lost, but hey, it was a hell of a show.

Video: Robbie Lawler pranks Dana White by refusing to fight Matt Brown after 'Immortal' scale fail

UFC on FOX 12 results: Patrick Cummins scores one-sided win over Kyle Kingsbury

The story of the fight was pretty simple: Cummins, who comes from a wrestling background at Penn State, took Kingsbury down at will. And kept him there. Cummins still has a ways to go with his striking, and as such, he wasn't able to finish Kingsbury, but he managed to dish out more than his fair share of elbows from the top and knees in the clinch.

UFC on FOX 12 results, photos: Tim Means outstrikes injured Hernani Perpetuo

SAN JOSE –  Tim Means (21-6-1 MMA, 5-3 UFC) might not have won the start of the fight, but he managed to hold on through an early assault and ended up being the sole source of offense by the end.

Jedrzejczyk on UFC Debut: Juliana Lima Wasn’t Nice at Weigh-Ins, So She Got Hit Hard

Joanna Jedrzejczyk continued the impressive introduction of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s new women’s strawweight division with a three-round thrashing of Juliana de Lima Carneiro at UFC on Fox 12 . Jedrzejczyk bounced back from a few takedowns early to really display her dominance in the striking department, blasting her Brazilian counterpart with shots that slowed Lima down. With the victory in her UFC debut, Jedrzejczyk remains unbeaten in her pro career at 7-0. The Polish fighter explained that Lima’s action’s at the weigh-ins on Friday pushed her to harm her opponent. She was not fazed by Lima missing the required mark of 115 pounds. “Before, I was only fighting at 125 pounds and never had any desire to move down to 115 pounds. When the UFC called to offer me this opportunity, I knew I had to do it. The weight cut was much easier than I thought it would be, and I have really good people around me that helped,” Jedrzejczyk said. “I didn’t care that Lima didn’t make weight; I would fight her no matter what. She wasn’t nice at weigh-ins to me, and what’s funny is tonight she gets hit pretty hard in return.

After First UFC Win, Israel’s Noad Lahat Returning Home to Fight for His Country

Noad Lahat impressed in his featherweight bout against Steven Siler on Saturday at UFC on Fox 12 , taking home a unanimous decision victory. He will be taking the win home -- literally. On Sunday, Lahat will be flying home to rejoin the Israeli army in its ongoing conflict with the Palestinians, who are continuing to fight over the sacred land of Gaza. During his post-fight interview with UFC color commentator Joe Rogan, “Neo” spoke about what the future holds for him, and what drove him to the upset win. “I wasn’t surprised that I won the fight. I knew I had probably taken the first two rounds, and when he got me in the figure four there in the third, I just had to wait for my opportunity to get out of it,” Lahat said. “This last two months has been an absolute hell, worrying about all my friends and family. I just knew I had to go back and help my country. I wasn’t going to say anything about the conflict, but while I was warming up [American Kickboxing Academy coach] Bob [Cook] showed me updates on Fox News that shelling had started again in Israel. I wanted to show my flag and use my victory to give my family strength in this dark time.

UFC on Fox 12: Lawler vs. Brown (main card) live results, play by play and discussion

They tie up and Brown hits a beautiful throw and maintains control with a D'arce grip from the front headlock. Lawler breaks the grip and stands, holding Brown on the fence and tagging him with a left hook. Brown goes for a foot sweep and switches to a body knee, then thwacks Lawler with a short elbow. Another knee to the body and elbow to the head combo from Brown. Lawler steps back and dings Brown with a crushing left, then scores with another. Left roundhouse kick lands to the face of Brown as the momentum swings back towards Lawler. 10-9 to Lawler for a slight edge in overall violence, even though an 11-10 seems more appropriate. Could have been a 10-10 or gone either way though.

UFC on Fox fight card primer: Robbie Lawler vs Matt Brown

"Ruthless" Robbie Lawler comes back here as one of the greatest UFC comeback stories ever. After a ho-hum 4-3 run way back in 2002-2004, Lawler left the UFC and fought in a variety of organizations, winning gold in EliteXC. He settled in Strikeforce, but ended his time there on a 1-3 run and looked to be winding down his career. Instead, he came to the UFC with a vengeance, earning a title shot and now looking to be on the verge of another crack at UFC gold. At a time when so many UFC veterans have left the sport behind, Ruthless still holds strong as a fighter from an older era of MMA. The fact that he is not only relevant, but arguably in his prime is incredible, and you know fans are salivating to see him hoist that title belt high.

Exclusive: Image Comics Goes Ape for THE HUMANS by Keenan Marshall Keller and Tom Neely « Nerdist

Being an entertainment journalist means that I spend a good portion of each day parsing through press releases and article pitches, but reading the phrase “the pages drip with 100% Ape-Biker Exploitation at its finest” is one of the highlights of my press release-reading year. Fortunately for us, that wasn’t a weird piece of oddly specific spam (what  have I been Googling?). Rather, it’s a description of Keenan Marshall Keller and Tom Neely’s new creator-owned Image Comics series  The Humans , a title which we are proud to exclusively announce as part of today’s pre-Comic-Con Image Expo festivities.

UFC on Fox 12 fight card primer: Guida vs. Bermudez and Thomson vs. Green

The last time Josh Thomson fought in San Jose, he shocked the MMA world by stopping Nate Diaz in the 2nd round with a beautiful head kick and multiple strikes on a turtled up Diaz before the referee stopped the fight. It cemented Thomson's place among the UFC's elite at lightweight and it gave him a title shot against Anthony Pettis, which unfortunately never came to fruition after Pettis injured his knee. Thomson took another fight in the meantime, a main event spot against Ben Henderson in Chicago, where he was unable to get the split decision to go his way. The official record on Thomson shows he's 2-3 in his last 5, but he could conceivable be 4-1 if an additional judge saw him winning both the Henderson fight and the Gilbert Melendez trilogy in Strikeforce.

551-pound man sentenced to 30-month house arrest asks judge for less time

TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. - A 551-pound man convicted of supplying pills to illegal pain clinics says he is too obese to go to prison. Steven Goodman, 70, is currently serving a 30-month sentence on house arrest and has asked the judge for a sentence reduction. Goodman, former pharmacist, pleaded guilty in 2012. He was accused of supplying more than 1 million oxycodone and other prescription pills to illegal pain management clinics throughout South Florida. The judge sentenced Goodman to confinement in his Treasure Island home followed by four years of probation and a $25,000 fine. The sentence was mainly due to his size. His multitude of medical and emotional issues (obesity, sleep apnea, atrial fibrillation, high blood pressure, gout, arthritis, multiple colon polyps) left him reportedly in need of an almost around-the-clock caregiver. They also cited the fact he would be unable to fit in a prison bed. At the time, a doctor surmised he had only one to three years left to live. But this week Goodman's case resurfaced in court. A judge just rejected a motion filed by his Tampa-based attorney to end the remainder of his home confinement.

UFC Fight Night: Lawler vs. Brown live fight blog

Robbie Lawler beat Matt Brown by unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 48-47) in the main event of UFC Fight Night on Saturday at SAP Center in San Jose. Lawler will now get a rematch with UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks.

Featherweights Ernest Chavez, Zubaira Tukhugov Added to UFC Fight Night in Sweden

Ernest Chavez is 1-1 in the Octagon. | Dave Mandel/ A featherweight pairing between Ernest Chavez and Zubaira Tukhugov has been added to UFC Fight Night Stockholm on Oct. 4 at the Globe Arena in Sweden. UFC officials announced the fight on Saturday. As of now, the fight joins Nicholas Musoke - Amir Sadollah and Niklas Backstron- Mike Wilkinson as the third bout confirmed for the promotion’s return to Stockholm. Chavez was supposed to have fought on Aug. 23 at UFC Fight Night “Henderson vs. dos Anjos,” but the meeting was canceled when “EJ” went down with an injury. The Tustin, Calif., native has lost once in his professional career, dropping his last outing against Elias Silverio at “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3” finale in May. This brought his overall record under the Zuffa banner to 1-1. Tukhogov hasn’t lost in over two years and is currently riding a seven-fight win streak into his matchup with Chavez. At only 23 years old, “Warrior” is beginning to turn some heads. His UFC debut was equally impressive as his exploits in Russia, as he took a decision victory from Douglas Silva de Andrade at UFC Fight Night “Mousasi vs.

Tiago dos Santos enters the UFC after first high-level camp

"I want to knock him out, and I’m going for the knockout," he said. "I don’t underestimate my opponent, I know he’s a well-rounded fighter who deserves to be in the UFC, but I want to knock him out. And Rogerio will surprise the world once again. He trained a lot for this fight, and I’m sure that it’s going to be a great night for Team Nogueira."

Whatever happened to Daniel Cormier's knee surgery? UFC 178 headliner explains

“I was supposed to meet with doctor this past Wednesday to discuss a date where we could either do the surgery or go forward without it,” he told MMAjunkie Radio on Thursday. “I was going to tell him, ‘Now that my LCL is better, I don’t feel as though I need surgery. Maybe we can do something else. Some alternative stuff.’ But I didn’t go because I was in Los Angeles for the show. Thank goodness I didn’t go into that appointment, because I didn’t want to have the surgery. What if he would have advised me to? You know doctors always like to play it safe.
