Kevin Lee: Someone May Have to Die Cutting Weight in the UFC Before Something Changes

Like many fighters, Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight contender Kevin Lee is hoping something is done sooner rather than later to address the weight cutting issues that have affected increasing numbers of fighters and matchups recently. Lee has been vocal about the need to introduce additional weight classes to help alleviate some of these issues so fighters do not feel the need to take extreme measures just to make weight.

Infographic: Professional Fighters League Season 1 Featherweight Playoff Standings

As the inaugural regular season of Professional Fighters League nears its conclusion, one of the most interesting divisions is certainly featherweight. A bit of a dark horse coming into the season, Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Steven Siler has already clinched his playoff berth -- and the No. 1 overall seed -- with two first-round submission victories. Other fighters who have punched their tickets to the playoffs and a shot at the $1 million divisional prize include fellow UFC expat Lance Palmer and 19-0 grinder Andre Harrison . To add to the playoff intrigue, Palmer and Harrison can both count decision wins over the “Super” top seed on their ledgers. Among the disappointments of the season so far has been Marcos Galvao . The longtime top-10 fixture in the 145-pound division left Bellator MMA on a two-fight skid, but any hope of a career renaissance in PFL was dashed quickly, along with any shot at the grand prize, as the 36 year-old submission specialist was eliminated from playoff contention in dispiriting losses to Max Coga and fellow Bellator veteran Nazareno Malegarie .

Jose Aldo: Jeremy Stephens is 'first step' toward regaining UFC title

Aldo has shown nothing but respect for Stephens ahead of their matchup. “Scarface” is not usually one to talk smack, and this fight is no exception. Stephens has had an up-and-down run in the UFC, but he’s arguably in his finest form, and because of that Aldo thinks it was the right fight to make for both men.

UFC Welterweight Jake Matthews Uses Twitter, Humor To Lobby Sage Northcutt For a Fight

Shit just got real!@ufc @sagenorthcutt pic.twitter.com/CMR9Q3CCAW — Jake Matthews (@JakeMatthewsUFC) July 20, 2018 Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight Jake Matthews is doing his best on Twiiter to get the attention of another welterweight, Sage Northcutt . The 23 year-old Australian initially reached out to Northcutt on Twitter on 19 July with a cheeky photoshopped image of the pair standing side by side above a “The Ultimate Fighter – Young Guns!” banner. Northcutt didn’t reply, so Matthews tried his hand again asking “Super Sage” not to ignore him. Dear Mr Northcutt, your normally very polite, but I'm sure you know it's rude to ignore folks.@sagenorthcutt @ufc pic.twitter.com/UK7juCjl2W — Jake Matthews (@JakeMatthewsUFC) July 24, 2018 Matthews and Northcutt are two of the youngest fighters on the roster, both fight in the welterweight division and both are riding three-fight winning streaks. Matthews is coming off a first-round submission win over Shinsho Anzai at UFC Fight Night 132 in Singapore last month. The 22 year-old Northcutt picked up a second round knockout win over Zak Ottow at UFC Fight Night 133 earlier this month.

Jim Miller Booked Against Alex White at UFC 228 in Dallas on Sept. 8

Jim Miller is slated to step into the Octagon for the 30th time when he squares off with Alex White at UFC 228 . The Las Vegas-based promotion recently announced the lightweight booking. UFC 228 takes place at American Airlines Arena in Dallas on Sept. 8 and is headlined by a welterweight championship tilt between Tyron Woodley and Darren Till . Miller is currently 17-11 with one no contest during his UFC tenure. The 34-year-old Sparta, N.J., native has fallen on hard times of late, as he enters the matchup with White on a four-fight losing streak. Most recently, Miller suffered a first-round knockout loss to Dan Hooker at UFC Fight Night 128 on April 21. White came up short in his first appearance of 2018, dropping a unanimous decision to James Krause at UFC Fight Night 124 on Jan. 14. White is 3-4 in the Octagon after beginning his professional career with nine consecutive triumphs on the regional circuit.

Tyron Woodley is early UFC 228 betting favorite over Darren Till but not by much

“This is a modern day wrestler vs. a striker matchup. Woodley has added some power striking to his wrestling, while Till is an unorthodox and physically imposing striker. As much as Woodley has improved his striking, his best path to victory is to utilize his wrestling and try to take this fight to the canvas. Till will want to keep this fight upright and land powerful combinations. Till is a younger, hungry southpaw, but Woodley has faced dangerous strikers already and is more proven and experienced. As long as Woodley is healthy, he deserves to be the favorite.”

“We do what we do, but if that’s the perception he gets, I think that’s just from one fight, from one experience, from one tweet,” Alvarez told reporters, including MMAjunkie, at UFC on FOX 30 open workouts Wednesday. “I respect everything this man’s done. By The Numbers: Jose Aldo

After two straight losses to Max Holloway , former Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight titleholder Jose Aldo has all the motivation he needs to return to the win column. A surging Jeremy Stephens on a three-fight winning streak stands in his way in the UFC on Fox 30 headliner on Saturday at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta. It will be Aldo’s first non-title fight in more than nine years. Before he locks horns with Stephens, here are some of the numbers that have come to define the Brazilian: 17: Years of age when he made his professional debut at Eco Fight Championship 1 in August 2004. The former soccer player knocked out countryman Mario Bigola with head kick 18 seconds into the first round. 10: Years between losses, from Nov. 26, 2005 to Dec. 12, 2015. In that stretch, Aldo went 18-0. 11: First-round finishes on his resume. Aldo started his career with seven straight stoppages in the first round, all in regional competition. He has added three more in World Extreme Cagefighting and another in the UFC.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Sho-Gone

MMA has a way of informing even its greatest competitors that time may have passed them by. As Mauricio Rua discovered, rarely is the message pleasant. In his first appearance in more than a year, the former Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight titleholder was on the receiving end of a violent knockout from Anthony Smith in the UFC Fight Night 134 headliner on July 22 in Hamburg, Germany. A devastating elbow from Smith punctuated a volley of blows and turned out the lights on Rua just 89 seconds into the first round. A staple of the 205-pound weight class for 15-plus years, the oft-injured Rua has seen the miles continue to accumulate on his odometer. Now 36, the Brazilian owns a mediocre 9-9 record since joining the UFC in 2007 after a marvelous run in Pride Fighting Championships . Rua entered his encounter with Smith -- a short-notice replacement for Volkan Oezdemir -- on the strength of a three-fight winning streak but looked lethargic and uninspired before a crowd of 7,798 at the Barclaycard Arena. The loss pushes “Shogun” off the page in the latest Sherdog.

37 Nick Newell falls short in UFC bid, drops decision to Alex Munoz at DWCS 14

But for every charge, Munoz was ready to counter with his wrestling skills, which had earned him a spot as the wrestling coach on the famed MMA squad Team Alpha Male. Newell took damage on his back and was hit some more when he rolled to his knees. By the time he managed to lock in his first serious submission attempt, sweat made a submission impossible.
