Trading Shots: On Brown and Lawler, were we too quick to judge?

It reminds me a lot of what we see in team sports like football. Everybody’s looking for these specific markers of talent, or at least of potential. They seize on height, weight, bench press and 40-yard dash numbers. They want something they can point to and say, “There, that justifies my faith in this player.” Seems like we do similar stuff in MMA, but we forget that, with such a small sample size of fights, and with so much riding on one night’s performance, there are a lot of ways to get fooled. You can have a bad night and not be a bad fighter. You can have several and still improve from there.

Jose Aldo to defend featherweight title against Chad Mendes in Brazil

The UFC this week announced four more Brazilian shows to close out 2014, promising that one will feature a title fight. White said UFC Brazil was going to be mad at him, but he let the cat out of the bag with Aldo-Mendes II on Saturday night. The pay-per-view card is scheduled to take place at Ginasio do Maracanazinho.

UFC on FOX 12 results, photos: Jorge Masvidal survives knockdown to top Daron Cruickshank

In round two Masvidal found his stride, getting the action to the mat and using his grappling expertise to keep Cruickshank on the defensive, struggling just to stay out of submissions. With the action likely knotted up at a round apiece, it all came down to the third, where Masvidal fed Cruickshank a steady diet of more of the same.

UFC on FOX 12 post-fight facts: Anthony Johnson sets record for sub-minute KOs

Even though nine of the 12 bouts on the card ended in a decision, the card featured a number of notable outcomes, including a new king of the quick knockout. For more on that, plus other facts and figures to come out of the UFC’s 12th network television offering, here at 45 post-fight facts about UFC on FOX 12.

UFC on Fox 12 Bonuses: Lawler, Brown, ‘Rumble,’ Bermudez Net $50K Awards

Dennis Bermudez got a performance bonus to go with his big win. | Jeff Sherwood/ Robbie Lawler and Matt Brown carried an enormous amount of hype into their UFC on Fox 12 main event, and the top-10 welterweights were able to deliver. Lawler and Brown went at it for 25 minutes in the No. 1 contender’s bout at SAP Center in San Jose, Calif., and both men earned $50,000 bonuses for the “Fight of the Night.” After five rounds, “Ruthless” was deemed the victor by the judges sitting cageside, but en route to victory, the American Top Team product absorbed a fair share of punishment. Brown made good use of his fabled elbows, scored a couple takedowns, and wobbled Lawler with a shot to the jaw in the first, proving himself deserving of his nickname, “The Immortal.” Anthony Johnson endured a full training camp but only required 44 seconds to dismantle Antonio Rogerio Nogueira with a smattering of pinpoint punches. The finish was deemed worthy of a UFC “Performance of the Night” bonus, earning the Blackzilian a cool $50,000.

The three stars of ‘UFC on FOX 12: Lawler vs. Brown’ in San Jose

Lawler’s success story since returning to the UFC has been impressive. He failed to take his run into Cinderella territory when he narrowly lost a title bout to Hendricks earlier this year, and while second chances don’t come around often in life, Lawler earned the opportunity to fight for UFC gold again and will be hoping for a better outcome.

Dana White: Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes will be rescheduled for Brazil event

Mendes had campaigned to keep the bout in the United States, but with the other dates on the calendar filling up and with the need for a big fight to headline Brazil, he didn't get his wish.

Not without scars, UFC's Bobby Green emerges from life filled with pain

When asked about his brother's death, Green bristles, then falls into a long-winded story about a fellow fighter he once respected. He met the fighter last year and his first impression was awful. His brother's death was not going to stop him from signing autographs and meeting fans earlier this month at the UFC Fan Expo.

Report: MMA Fighter Cleared of Jan. 1 Homicide Charge in New Mexico

Mixed martial artist Joe Torrez will not be charged with homicide in the Jan. 1 death of a man who broke into his home in Dona Ana, N.M., according to a report in the Las Cruces Sun News . Torrez, 28, fought four intruders who invaded his home on New Year’s Day. One of those men, 25-year-old Sal Garces, was stabbed four times in chest during the altercation and died at the scene. Throughout the case, Torrez, whose fiance and son were home during the break-in, claimed he acted in self defense. Dona Ana County authorities announced that Torrez would not be charged on Thursday. “It was like a weight was lifted this morning,” Torrez told the Sun-News. “No matter what … I had it in my mind.” A statement by Torrez can be viewed here . The three other men who allegedly entered Torrez’s home -- Nathan M. Avalos, Raymond Garces and Leonard Calvillo -- have all been indicted on aggravated burglary, conspiracy, attempted battery and criminal damage to property charges and are still awaiting trial. Two others, Rachel Carrillo and Cylver Betancourt, are facing aggravated burglary charges stemming from that night.

Kyle Kingsbury announces retirement: Recalling his legacy as the guy who ejaculated on sushi on The Ultimate Fighter

Last night was an absolute low point in civility, class and the presentation of these athletes. It's also a direct contradiction of what's being presented on I realize Spike TV has to get edgy in order to get ratings, but this is beyond the pale. They trap bored young men in a house, fuel them with alcohol to their hearts' content, encourage them to find ways around their boredom but do not mind when these fighters act in such a way as to cause revulsion to anyone with any sense of decency.

All we know for sure is Nick had been gone for nearly a year and a half since his loss to GSP. And we miss him.

Lawler Tops Brown, Secures Rematch with Hendricks

SAN JOSE, July 26 - Johny Hendricks, Robbie Lawler is coming for you…again. After a gritty five-round battle with Matt Brown at the SAP Center Saturday, the veteran Lawler secured a second UFC welterweight title fight against the reigning titleholder by pounding out a close unanimous decision win. “I’m very excited,” said Lawler. “It’s time to go back to work and I’ll be waiting for him.” Scores were 49-46 twice and 48-47 for Lawler, who lost a razor-thin bout to Hendricks for the vacant title in March. But to get a rematch, he had to knock out Jake Ellenberger in May and then survive 25 minutes with the ultra-tough Brown, who brought a seven-fight winning streak into the Octagon in San Jose. “He went toe-to-toe with me and not many guys would do that,” said Lawler, now 24-10 with 1 NC. Brown (21-12) shot out to the center of the Octagon to meet Lawler but ate a 1-2 in the process. A couple shots moments later continued to get Brown’s attention, with the Ohio native’s aggressive rushes coming up empty. 90 seconds in, Brown was able to rock Lawler briefly, but the smiling Iowan fired back before the fight hit the deck midway through the frame.

It’s been half a year since Turlock’s Lewis Gonzalez was forced to withdraw from what would have been his first shot at a World Series of Fighting championship belt. Scheduled to face Justin Gaethje on Jan. 18, Gonzalez suffered a knee injury weeks prior to the event and was forced to sit and watch as Gaethje defeated his replacement, Richard Patishnock, via TKO to become WSOF’s inaugural Lightweight Champion. Now, after months of rest and recuperation, Gonzalez is slated to enter the cage for combat once again in an Aug. 9 showdown with heavy-handed lightweight Luis Palomino at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The matchup is one of an up-and-coming wrestler against a veteran striker as Gonzalez enters with a 9-0 record and Palomino enters with a record of 22-9. Adding to the fight’s intrigue is the possibility of the winner getting a shot at Gaethje and his belt in the near future. “Right now I know we’re right there in contention for a title shot. So either after this fight, or I might have to go one more to get another title shot,” Gonzalez said. “I’m just excited to get back in the cage, especially on a big stage like this.

Following UFC on Fox 12 Win, Jorge Masvidal Wants Fight with Donald Cerrone Next

Jorge Masvidal wants a shot at Donald Cerrone. | Dave Mandel/ Jorge Masvidal weathered a knockdown in the first round of his UFC on Fox 12 bout against Daron Cruickshank to score a unanimous decision victory. Cruickshank seemingly had the fight won following a pinpoint right cross to the jaw of “Gamebred” but couldn’t capitalize, allowing Masvidal to recover and take the scrap to the mat. The 29-year-old American Top Team product grounded “The Detroit Superstar” for the better portion of the final two rounds, ultimately receiving the nod from the judges. Following the fight, Masvidal made it clear during an interview what he wants, and it involves a lightweight contender who has unequivocally said he will fight anytime, anywhere: Donald Cerrone . “I knew I won the fight. I mean the first round was close but it’s hard not to give me the other rounds when I’m just dominating from the top,” Masvidal said. “He did catch me clean in the first round, but I woke up immediately and went back to work.

Welcome to the UFC Masanori Kanehara

He has a pretty nice shot and double leg when he wants it, but I'm not sure how well he sets it up with strikes, as most of what I've seen his him shooting under his opponents, rather than generating takedowns on his own offense. He has a very clingy top game, and while his ground and pound isn't all that heavy, he's very good at advancing position and working toward submissions. Overall he's a very well rounded fighter and a welcome addition to the bantamweight division. I don't know that he has the fluidity of transition or standup skill to make a run at the top 15, but there are definitely guys at 135 he can beat.

Tweet of the Day: Robbie Lawler's celebratory meal following UFC win over Matt Brown

Lawler has fought 3 times since March. This means he has had to maintain his weight and follow a strict diet for basically the whole of 2014, so I can't really blame him for pigging out after a job well done.

Ryan Couture Signs with Bellator, ‘Thrilled to Work with Scott Coker Again’

Ryan Couture (right) is excited to work with Scott Coker again. | Dave Mandel/ After two consecutive wins with regional promotion BattleGrounds MMA, Ryan Couture has signed a contract with Bellator . The son of Randy Couture becomes the latest addition to the Bellator roster, as it was announced during the Bellator 122 broadcast on Friday night that Couture has signed with the promotion. Couture was released by the UFC last year after he lost to Ross Pearson and Al Iaquinta in consecutive fights. Since parting ways with the Zuffa-owned promotion, Couture has gone on to win both of his fights on the independent circuit. spoke with Couture, as well as his manager Sam Spira, about the change of scenery. "I'm thrilled to be joining the Bellator and Viacom family and to have the chance to work with Scott Coker again,” Couture said. “I have an exciting challenge ahead of me as I try to establish myself among the best in the lightweight division." Couture refers to his seven-fight tenure with Strikeforce, where Coker was at the helm.

UFC on FOX 12 Aftermath: Robbie Lawler, Fighter of the Year?

If Lawler had found a way to pull out the fifth round against Hendricks back at UFC 171, we would be talking about Lawler as the runaway leader for Fighter of the Year at the moment. As it is, even with an "L" on his record this year, Lawler is on the short list. And after going toe-to-toe with the valiant Brown, let's appreciate Lawler for who he is. In this day and age of fight fallouts, injuries, contract disputes, and assorted nonsense, Lawler is the straightforward, take on all comers, no-BS fighter that drew us all to the sport in the first place. And whether or not he's Fighter of the Year, that's a pretty good reputation to have.

For the night, FOX and NBC both tied for first place in the key demo at 0.8. Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin vs. Daniel Geale: Boxing Play-by-Play & Live Updates

Gennady “GGG” Golovkin vs. Daniel “The Real Deal” Geale Round 1 Geale comes right out and throws a right and a left, though both shots miss. Golovkin is very relaxed. Golovkin throws a hard left hook, but the Aussie blocks it. They trade hard jabs in the middle of the ring. Geale throws a left jab and follows it with a right to the body. Nice right uppercut on the inside for Geale. Golovkin is starting to warm up and throw his left jab routinely. Geale is moving side-to-side to disrupt the jab of “GGG.” Golovkin fires a punishing right to the body late in the round. Geale slips away from Golovkin in the corner, but he stumbles down onto the seat of his trunks; his foot became ensnared in the cords of the ringside cameraman. Golovkin patiently stalks his foe when the fight resumes and lands a left jab. Hard left to the face/right to the body by Geale. The round seems to have gone on longer than usual. Confirmation is that the round lasted exactly four minutes. Mike Sloan scores the round: 10-9 Geale. Gary Randall scores the round: 10-10. Round 2 Between rounds, a cut is revealed above Geale’s right eye.

UFC on Fox 12 results: Fights to make for main card fighters

Clay Guida . He's 32, he's been hit a lot, had several wars over his career, has competed in the sport for a long time, and is in one of the UFC's deepest divisions. Guida's striking has actually improved marginally, but his weaknesses are too easy for established contenders to exploit and it's become even easier as his chin has eroded and his speed advantage has gone. it's clear that he's well past his best and fighting top 10 fighters. A logical next fight for Guida would be Darren Elkins , who is on the fringes of the top 10 but was bumped off after he lost to Jeremy Stephens .

Next UFC on FOX takes place Dec. 13 in Phoenix

Dana White announced after Saturday night's UFC on FOX show that the next network event would take place on Saturday, December 13, at the U.S. Airways Arena in Phoenix, Ariz. No matches were announced for the show, which would be the first time the UFC has ever been in the city. Phoenix is home to two of UFC biggest stars, former lightweight champion Benson Henderson, who is scheduled to headline against Rafael dos Anjos on Aug. 23 in Tulsa, and light heavyweight Ryan Bader , who faces Ovince St. Preux one week earlier. Phoenix is also the home of Arizona State University. The ASU wrestling team has produced many of UFC's biggest stars, including heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez , who would not be able to fight on the show since he's defending his title against Fabricio Werdum one month earlier in Mexico City, along with Dan Severn , Don Frye , C.B. Dollaway , Bader, Dan Henderson , Aaron Simpson and John Moraga . The December show, which has become a tradition on FOX, is usually one of the most-watched UFC events of the year due to promotion during NFL games on FOX.

Kyle Kingsbury on MMA retirement: 'It didn’t make sense to get beat up anymore'

Kingsbury (11-6 MMA, 4-5 UFC), a veteran of “The Ultimate Fighter 8″ who once posted a four-fight UFC winning streak with a pair of “Fight of the Night” performances, called it quits following a unanimous-decision loss to fellow light heavyweight Patrick Cummins (6-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC), which aired on FOX from San Jose’s SAP Center.
