Joe Riggs out of UFC Fight Night 51 after injury from accidental shooting

The news pushes back Riggs’ return to the UFC after an eight-year absence. The 13-year-veteran, who in 2005 fought then-welterweight champ Matt Hughes in a non-title bout, most recently fought under the Bellator banner, where he competed on the first and only season of “Bellator MMA: Fight Master” and won the reality tournament this past November with a decision over Mike Bronzoulis.

David Branch defends middleweight belt vs. Yushin Okami at WSOF 15

Okami, however, represents one of the more significant threats in his high-profile career. The Japanese vet debuted for WSOF in March and earned a second-round submission of Svetlozar Savov at WSOF 9. The win put him back on the right track after a first-round TKO loss to Ronaldo Souza ended a seven-year UFC career in which he went 13-5 in the octagon.

As many people may know, losing weight and being healthy is not an easy task. It is not only physical but also emotional. My story may be very similar to many of you struggling with a fit and healthy lifestyle. It was a rough and sad battle at first. When I was fifteen I battled with eating disorders and depression. Into my late teens, it became a love hate relationship with food and my body.  My weight gain came on so fast, my doctors and family members worried about my wellbeing. In the year 2013 I made the decision to transform my life and reward my body. The first step I took was following fitness Instagram pages for inspiration. Not very long...

Joe Riggs out of UFC Fight Night: Brasilia bout after accidental shooting

Riggs is on a six fight winning streak since a 2011 ProElite loss to Kendall Grove , one that capped the first losing streak of his career. Most recently he was crowned "Fight Master" off the one season run of Bellator's reality TV show of the same name. He secured his release from Bellator shortly thereafter and was expected to return to the UFC as a short notice replacement for Mike Rhodes against Paulo Thiago.  No word on Riggs expected time of recovery, but I think it's safe to assume he'll be gunning for a quick return from injury.

Jack Slack: Christ, What a Right Hand! | FIGHTLAND

By fight night, the media was in a frenzy. The bitterness between the two boxers was clear from the staredown across the ring. And as the bell sounded, Eubank attempted one of the neatest trick plays I've seen in boxing for a while. Performing almost the reverse of Jersey Joe Walcott's cakewalk—Eubank skipped out to the centre of the ring, side on, cross-stepping with his back foot. Suddenly he turned his hip in and tried to take Benn's head off with his right hand. He failed to catch the WBO champion, but it was clear there was to be no feeling out process here.

Luke Rockhold: 'If Michael Bisping squeaks by Cung Le, I'll fight him and take out his other eye'

"If Bisping squeaks by (Cung Le), I'll take him, take out his other eye. Bisping came after me out of nowhere. I didn't know where it came from this time. Even on 'UFC Tonight,' he went on a rampage talking about me and teenagers, pool parties and my little pinky toe, I don't know. I heard all of this stuff on Twitter about it and I started gathering all the information because I didn't want to respond too quick until I saw what he said. I had to obviously give him my piece of mind and settle it. It's not my fault the UFC hires me to go host a pool party and they don't choose Bisping. The Bisping fight? That would be amazing. I would love to shut his mouth and get paid for it. I can't imagine better things in the world, that would be nice."

Now he has even more to train for as he takes on Diaz in what is expected to be a striking lovers' dream matchup on the UFC's annual Super Bowl weekend event. > Watch: Nick Diaz Exclusive Interview Considered by most to be the greatest mixed martial artist of all-time, the 39-year-old Silva shattered record after record during his nearly seven-year reign atop the 185-pound weight class, defeating the likes of Vitor Belfort , Rich Franklin , Chael Sonnen , and Dan Henderson , not to mention Hall of Famers Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar at 205 pounds. UFC Fight Night ‘Silva vs. Arlovski’ Gets Hallman-Tibau, ‘Pepey’-Johnson Bouts

The Sept. 13 card, which will be held at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in Brasilia, Brazil, is headlined by a heavyweight tilt between Antonio Silva and Andrei Arlovski . Policing Beauty: When Booty Is a Crime

There is no doubt that the bodies of women have been policed for centuries regarding the acceptability of what they can and can't show, but the comparison of Minaj to swimsuit models brings attention to the intersectionality of race and gender in this matter. Minaj is not only a woman, but a black woman with a famously large derriere in comparison to many of her white counterparts in the entertainment industry, which is partly why the uproar has ensued. This speaks first to the fact that women who are more curvaceous than the Hollywood standard are not accepted in certain depictions of beauty. Secondly, it raises the issue that women who belong to racial or ethnic groups that celebrate curves have an even smaller representation in media, and trouble brews when that beauty is shared with a predominantly white audience.

Diego Sanchez suggests potential move to featherweight to face Conor McGregor

"I've even possibly thought about going down to 145 just to fight him. Like as a matter of a fact, yesterday I was in my gym working out, and I was like 'can I do it? Can I make 145?' I was like 'I'm gonna have to do like a 10 day fast, I'm gonna have to really sacrifice to get down to 145. I'm gonna have to lose some muscle'. And I was really giving it some serious thought, I'm like 'but what if I'm stronger, what if I'm stringy. I'm gonna be long and stringy at that weight'.

Anderson Silva Returns to Meet Nick Diaz in Middleweight Clash at UFC 183

Saturday's twelfth FOX network prime time airing of UFC did normal patterned numbers, with a 1.5 rating and 2.5 million viewers, based on the final numbers that came in on Tuesday. The number is virtually identical with every FOX event that has taken place outside of football season the past few years, with the exception of the Benson Henderson vs. Gilbert Melendez lightweight title fight. Damacio Page Says Henry Cejudo Dodged Him, Didn’t Have Tough Fights Before UFC Signing

Damacio Page says he's ready to go back to the big show. | Keith Mills/ Damacio Page gets it. He knows Henry Cejudo was an attractive option for the UFC because of his gold medal, his fluent Spanish and his unblemished record. Page just would have preferred that the Olympic wrestler have been tested in the cage before receiving his call-up to the big show. Cejudo was supposed to face Page at Legacy Fighting Championship 31 for the promotion’s inaugural flyweight title, but Cejudo withdrew from the bout for personal reasons. “His personal reason was that I was going to knock his ass out,” Page recently told Since then, Cejudo withdrew from another Legacy appearance on Aug. 29. This time, the Arizonan had a more definitive reason: a newly-minted UFC contract. He will make his Octagon debut against Scott Jorgensen at UFC 177 in Sacramento, Calif., on Aug. 30. “You know what? I’m not mad at the guy. He did it right; he knew I was a dangerous fight,” Page said. “Of course he’s gonna dodge me.

“We were made aware that newly-signed UFC competitor Joe Riggs was involved in an unfortunate accident last night. While cleaning his permitted firearm (a pistol), the gun discharged, injuring his hand and upper thigh. Riggs was transported to a nearby hospital in Arizona where he is being treated by physicians. We wish Joe a speedy recovery.”

Sherdog Prospect Watch: Charles Rosa

Charles Rosa has finished all eight of his opponents. | Photo: Keith Mills/ Patience is a virtue, whether it comes to cooking or the sport of mixed martial arts. Undefeated featherweight prospect Charles Rosa has used the patience he learned while earning a degree in culinary arts and applied it to his MMA career to great benefit. He had to wait a year after he started training to have his first fight and then fought 20 times as an amateur before making his professional debut in September 2010. “He is a special kid,” said Rosa’s coach, Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Charles McCarthy . “Naturally, he’s very gifted when it comes to fighting, but when he got here, he also made a lot of mistakes that were dangerous for fighting at a high level. To get to a high level, you have to avoid mistakes. We did everything the right way with Charles, starting with amateur grappling tournaments and going from there. With the guys I work with, I want to make sure they work the right way. When they get to where they're going to end up, I want them to be as skilled as possible.

Cub Swanson Addresses Rumors of Potential Matchup with Frankie Edgar

Cub Swanson says he's waiting for the winner of Jose Aldo-Chad Mendes. | Dave Mandel/ Cub Swanson and Frankie Edgar were both victorious in their last outings, leaving them waiting for a shot at whoever emerges victorious from the impending Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes fight at UFC 179 on Oct 25. With both Aldo and Mendes tied up, it makes sense for the fourth- and fifth-ranked featherweights in the rankings to duke it out and stake their claim to a title shot. The thought process was echoed by Edgar’s manager and World Series of Fighting matchmaker Ali Abdelaziz, who took to social media to make his hopes known. @FrankieEdgar vs Cub Swanson on FOX Dec 13, 5 round main event. @ufc @arielhelwani — Ali Abdelaziz (@AliAbdelaziz00) July 27, 2014 Swanson -- who has won his last six, including a five-round decision against Jeremy Stephens on June 28 -- doesn’t agree with such plans, especially after being promised the next shot at the Aldo-Mendes winner by UFC President Dana White. Swanson also took to Twitter in order to express his feelings on Edgar’s management team’s exploits.

Report: Ronda Rousey ‘Highly Likely’ to be Focal Point in Rumored UFC Uniform Deal

Ronda Rousey holds big value for the UFC. | Dave Mandel/ If and when the Ultimate Fighting Championship adopts a uniform policy for its athletes, bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey is likely to be at the forefront of such a deal. Mike Mossholder, UFC vice president of global marketing partnerships, recently told Ad Week that the Las Vegas-based promotion is “actively engaged in conversations” with a “premium apparel line” to produce a uniform for its roster. According to Mossholder, Rousey is the UFC’s “No. 1 most requested athlete” by sponsors, making it “highly likely” that she would be featured in any such agreement. The UFC has yet to announce anything officially regarding a potential uniform deal. According to Ad Week, representatives from Nike, Under Armour and Adidas either declined comment or could not be reached. The 27-year-old Rousey currently ranks No. 3 in UFC ticket sales, according to the report. She owns notable sponsorship deals with MetroPCS and Xyience. Xyience President John Lennon informed Ad Week that sales for the energy drink jumped 12 percent with Rousey’s image on its cans.
