Opinion: Where is Nick Diaz? How Dare You Ask

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Two years ago when the Ultimate Fighting Championship announced its partnership with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, the stringent regulations and testing the relationship would entail -- a then-minimum of 2750 or so tests per year across the roster -- it was fair to say that the game had changed. You're reading this; you've seen it with your own eyes. You've seen fighters, from prince to pauper, champions to chattel, test positive for performance enhancing drugs. You've seen athletes still yet to fail a drug test undergo clearly observable, drastic physical changes. Nick Diaz isn't one of those guys. Alas, the drug testing itself is far from the only component of the UFC-USADA relationship that forces another level of responsibility on the promotion's athletes. No, coordinating the mass-scale, routine examination of over approximately 550 fighters scattered all over the planet requires certain mechanisms, a particular level of rigor.

Stories from the Road: ‘Big’ John McCarthy

There has always been a larger-than-life ambience about him, and “Big” John McCarthy is already pretty hefty. He stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 260 pounds, and one gets the impression that the third guy in the Octagon can still kick the asses of most of the guys he separates in there; and McCarthy is 54. A former decorated member of the Los Angeles Police Department, McCarthy has been mixed martial arts’ best beat cop the last two decades, perhaps more memorialized as the sport’s big-shouldered guardian, a walking, talking MMA encyclopedia. McCarthy has gone from an initial proponent for what was once deemed “human cockfighting” to reaching iconic stature. He cannot stroll down a street anywhere, from Las Vegas and Tokyo to St. Petersburg, Russia, without someone recognizing him. He has been enshrined in the Legends of MMA Hall of Fame and the Masters Hall of Fame. When anyone thinks of MMA referees, McCarthy invariably is the first one that comes to mind; and to think it began with one incredulous look. It was March 1991, just after the Rodney King incident.

Boxing: Jeff Horn Scores Controversial Unanimous Decision Over Manny Pacquiao

Official scorecard for Jeff Horn vs. Manny Pacquiao: Sherdog unofficial scorecards: Mike Sloan (116-111 Pacquiao), Gary Randall (116-112 Horn), Mike Fridley (115-112 Horn) The running theme of the week that was Jeff Horn was a real-life Rocky, that he was this local kid with no chance to win against an all-time great world champion. But unlike in the original “Rocky” movie, Horn actually walked out of the ring as the winner and new WBO welterweight champion. Horn (17-0-1, 11 KOs) fought his heart out in front of 55,000-plus rabid fans at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia, against Manny Pacquiao, a future Hall of Famer who has captured world titles in a record eight different weight classes. “The Hornet” showed no fear of the Filipino legend as he came after him from the opening bell and made it a rough and tumble affair throughout. Even when a gash was opened above his right eye, the Aussie rarely took a backward step as he forced his larger frame onto Pacquiao every chance he got.

Sneaky Jon Fitch Choke Submits Brian Foster in Professional Fighters League Headliner

TAP!!! Boom! @jonfitchdotnet with the W! #PFLDaytona pic.twitter.com/rTSUnUrHMd — #PFLDaytona (@ProFightLeague) July 1, 2017 Jon Fitch knows all the tricks of the trade. The longtime American Kickboxing Academy standout submitted Brian Foster with a modified rear-naked choke in the inaugural Professional Fighters League main event on Friday at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona, Florida. Fitch closed the deal 3:12 into Round 2, as he recorded his first finish in more than a decade. Foster had the upper hand in the early going. He tagged Fitch with several clean right hands and countered his takedowns and top control with attempted submissions, first with a guillotine choke and later with an armbar. Foster dropped the Fort Wayne, Indiana, native to a knee with a right hook in the second round, met his desperate bid for a double-leg takedown with sweeping punches and peppered him with uppercuts when he returned to an upright position. However, he appeared to suffer a knee injury during one of the exchanges and subsequent scrambles. Foster went to all fours and a bloodied Fitch moved to the top ride, sneaking his arms into place for the rear-naked choke.

Edson Barboza: Conor McGregor 'thinking about another sport,' so why doesn't UFC strip title?

“This guy is thinking about boxing; he’s thinking about another sport,” Barboza said. “He don’t think about the UFC. He don’t think about the division. That’s my job; that’s my work. I’m in the UFC to get the belt. I’m in the UFC to be the champ. I know I deserve the chance. This guy, because of him, our division is stuck. That’s not good. This guy doesn’t respect nobody. He doesn’t respect the UFC, and he’s still champ. That’s crazy.”

UFC 213 Statistical Matchup Analysis: Nunes vs. Shevchenko 2

The centerpiece of the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s International Fight Week is anchored by a rematch between two of the best women’s bantamweights on the planet. Defending champion Amanda Nunes has looked like she is in a league of her own since capturing the title against Miesha Tate in the first round at UFC 200. She needed even less time to defend the belt against Ronda Rousey at UFC 207 in December, punching out the former champion within the first minute of the fight. Following a breakout 2016 campaign, which also included a unanimous decision victory over Valentina Shevchenko prior to her winning the title, this will be the first fight of the year for the “Lioness,” who is currently riding a five-fight win streak. On the other side of the cage will be Shevchenko. The former muay Thai champion has continued to get more comfortable in the Octagon throughout her four fights in the UFC. “Bullet” debuted in the promotion in 2015 with a short-notice split decision win against Sarah Kaufman and then proceeded to lose a unanimous decision to Nunes.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Take a Good Last Look

Several major fights have been officially announced, and it is now the Ultimate Fighting Championship 's International Fight Week, which means there is an awful lot about to go down in the days ahead. We thought you might want to take a good, long look at these lists before an imminent and inevitable shake-up. The drama surrounding Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino finally seems over, as she will improbably meet Invicta Fighting Championships bantamweight titlist Tonya Evinger for the vacant UFC women's featherweight title at UFC 214 . Meanwhile, that same UFC 214 card has picked up a massive addition, with the rescheduled Donald Cerrone - Robbie Lawler battle added to its roster; and the UFC 215 bill on Sept. 9 has been bolstered by the booking of Junior dos Santos - Francis Ngannou . On top of these announcements, International Fight Week has no less than 10 ranked fighters in action, with most of them going head-to-head. We do have at least one real change. In our last update, following her exoneration by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, we placed Cortney Casey back in her rightful spot as our ninth-ranked strawweight.

Valentina Shevchenko’s Attack on War of Words

Valentina Shevchenko has prepared herself for war as she closes in on UFC 213 on July 8, when she will get her second chance at overcoming Amanda Nunes since their first meeting at UFC 196 last March. The first clash was a close affair. With Nunes dominating Shevchenko in the second after a close opening round, the Ukrainian hammered Nunes on the feet in the third, leaving many wondering what would happen if the bout was scheduled for five rounds. Having split her camp between three separate gyms, Shevchenko is leaving no stone unturned ahead of her first Ultimate Fighting Championship title date. “It’s been really great to be in Denver. For this camp, I started in Thailand at Tiger Muay Thai gym. I then continued the camp with Gracie Barra with ‘Draculino’ ( Vinicius Magalhaes ). After that we came to Denver, we’re training at 303 Academy,” she explained. “Of course, I’ve still been working with my longtime coach Pavel Fedotov, so I’m feeling very good. The altitude in Colorado is very helpful for my physical condition.

Conor McGregor Releases New Statement, And He’s More Confident Than Ever

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion Conor “Notorious” McGregor is getting ready for what may well be the payday of his career. The fighter is facing off against one of the boxing world’s most established kings of the ring.  “Notorious” goes toe-to-toe with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Aug. 26. With no professional boxing experience, McGregor is gearing up to face one of professional boxing’s best. Still, the daunting task does not seem to be affecting the UFC lightweight champion’s confidence. Over Instagram Conor McGregor recently posted, “I lied I’m back what’s up hahaha I am a fucking animal anyone can get it. Any ruleset. I don’t give a fuck. Nobody matching my work rate. Real work. UFC Fighters React To Controversial Pacquiao vs. Horn Fight

While the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) may have not had a fight card for last night, the world was gifted with an exciting boxing match up for the WBO welterweight world title in Brisbane, Australia. In the main event, boxing phenom Manny Pacquiao faced off against rising star Jeff Horn. The two boxing warriors pushed themselves to the limit as the fight ultimately went the distance. In the end, Jeff Horn earned a decision victory over his opponent. The decision has since become a contentious topic among fight fans and fellow competitors. Responses left by UFC fighters may be seen in the social media posts below. Good night, Horn landed 15% and Pacquiao landed to 32%, and no one is ok with the decision.
