Opinion: Will the Underdog Curse Claim Robbie Lawler Next?

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. *** As soon as it was announced that Tyron Woodley would get the next shot at Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder Robbie Lawler , a collective groan swept over mixed martial arts fans. Very few people, outside of Woodley’s own family and friends, thought the Missouri fighter deserved a fight with Lawler. If this scene sounds familiar, that’s because it is, and it’s also the reason why picking Woodley to be the one holding the championship after UFC 201 on Saturday in Atlanta isn’t as farfetched as some may think. If you take a look at recent history in MMA, you’ll find a disturbing trend of champions losing to opponents they were expected to maul. If you go back to May 2014, you might remember a guy by the name of T.J. Dillashaw , who was given absolutely no chance -- like less than zero -- to upend UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao at UFC 173.

Fact Check: World Series of Fighting 32

If the World Series of Fighting organization has a face, it belongs to Marlon Moraes . Moraes will put his bantamweight championship on the line in the World Series of Fighting 32 headliner, as he confronts Josh Hill in a rematch on Saturday at the Xfinity Arena in Everett, Washington. The Brazilian bested Hill across five rounds in their first encounter, handing the Canadian his first career defeat while walking away with a unanimous decision at WSOF 18 in February 2015. A homegrown star for the World Series of Fighting, Moraes will carry an 11-fight winning streak into the cage. The muay Thai stylist and Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt last competed at WSOF 28 on Feb. 20, when he needed just 73 seconds to cut down Joseph Barajas with leg kicks and retain his 135-pound title. Moraes, 28, has won all nine of his WSOF bouts, finishing five of them. Hill, meanwhile, has rattled off four straight wins since his failed first encounter with Moraes. The 29-year-old Hamilton, Ontario, native last fought at a regional event in Canada on April 9, as he captured a three-round unanimous decision from the well-traveled Bendy Casimir .

UFC 201 Statistical Matchup Analysis: Lawler vs. Woodley

In the post- Georges St. Pierre welterweight world, the Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight division continues to get progressively more exciting. Robbie Lawler has been busy stringing together an unprecedented spree of classic fights. Most recently, he took a controversially close split decision in a back-and-forth affair with Carlos Condit on Jan. 2. Before that, he authored a signature win in an all-time great bout against Rory MacDonald in July 2015, which was his first title defense and only fight of the year. The unlikely late-career resurgence for the longtime vet has been a true feel-good story; prior to his return to the UFC, Lawler went 3-5 in Strikeforce with several uninspired performances. Now he is two wins away from tying the title defense record of mentor and former coach Pat Miletich . Related » UFC 201 Preview Standing in his way at UFC 201 on Saturday in Atlanta is fellow Strikeforce alum Tyron Woodley . The NCAA All-American wrestler has had a sterling-if-not-slightly-underappreciated career thus far.

Matt Brown takes harsh stance against PEDs, calls for lifetime bans of popped fighters | UFC Fight News & Videos |BJPenn.com

“If they find out it was a tainted supplement, and you can legitimately prove it, then you don’t get a lifetime ban. That said, there may be a martyr. There may be someone that gets screwed by that system. There’s always going to be a problem, but I guarantee you, if you implement a lifetime ban, that problem gets solved real quick. A lot less people will be ending up with tainted supplements. I would venture to say there wouldn’t be a single, damned, tainted supplement.
