Mairbek Taisumov meets Marcin Bandel at UFC Fight Night 53 in Stockholm

Taisumov, from the Chechen Republic of Russia, will be looking to get back on track after a decision loss to Michel Prazeres at UFC Fight Night 38 in March in Brazil. That loss snapped a four-fight winning streak, which included a trio of submission wins under the M-1 Global banner, plus a decision victory over Tae Hyun Bang in his UFC debut at UFC Fight Night 34 in January.

Cage Warriors Moves Aug. 23 Card to Jordan After Dispute with Swedish Federation

Jack Mason was one of several CWFC talents not approved by the SMMAF. | Claire Farrell/ European mixed martial arts promotion Cage Warriors Fighting Championship has elected to move its Aug. 23 event from Stockholm to Amman, Jordan, on Aug. 22. According to a release by the promotion, “the decision to move CWFC 71 from Sweden to Jordan has come as a result of the nonsensical refusal of the Swedish Mixed Martial Arts Federation to approve several bouts to be contested under full unified rules.” CWFC submitted five bouts to the SMMAF for initial approval; of those five, only a featherweight clash between Martin Svensson and Dave Hill received permission to be contested. Four others -- Jack Hermansson vs. Cheick Kone , Pannie Kianzad vs. Alexandra Buch , Jack Mason vs. Jonatan Westin and Liam James vs. Frantz Slioa -- were denied approval. The SMMAF issued a statement to the promotion explaining its decision, claiming that "the committee has found that several matches applied for by Cage Warriors have not made the required level.

Pot revenues starting to help select schools on pricey projects

"We can only issue cash grants now, so it limits what we can issue significantly," said Scott Newell, director for the division of capital construction at the Department of Education. "That's why the excise tax will help grow that fund, but it will take some time to build up that industry."

52 weeks and a few extra zeroes: The rise and fall of Affliction MMA

Some of MMA’s most seminal fights have taken place on Katella Avenue in Orange County. The Honda Center, which sits three miles from Disneyland, was the venue for the UFC’s foray onto national broadcast television, when Junior dos Santos knocked out Cain Velasquez in 64 seconds to win the heavyweight belt on FOX. At UFC 157, Ronda Rousey both debuted the women’s bantamweight belt and defended it against Liz Carmouche. Not only did Rousey begin to transcend the fight game in Anaheim, but Carmouche became the UFC’s first openly gay competitor. That was a night of many firsts. The Honda Center was also the very same arena that the great Fedor Emelianenko -- the "Last Emperor," whom many believed to be the best mixed martial artist on the planet -- resurfaced in the States. Though the Russian heavyweight defeated Mark Coleman in Las Vegas two years earlier, Fedor’s career was built in Japan under the Pride banner, and in Rings long before that. He hadn’t been back. America, where the legend of Fedor had swelled to mythological proportions through each installment of his 25-fight unbeaten streak, had just that one glimpse.

They don't even test for HGH, EPO's, synthetic testosterone, Victor Conte's designer steroids that are undetectable with CURRENT testing being done in MMA or blood doping. Kyle Kingsbury brought Conte's steroids into MMA and made them available to fighters shortly after Conte was released from prison and ordered by a federal judge to have no contact with anyone associated with major league baseball. Kingsbury was a well known steroid abuser in college and supplied countless athletes at arizona with steroids. You have to be atotal IDIOT to get busted cheating in MMA. The wealthier the fighter the better more cutting edge PED's they are on. No doubt in my mind GSP is the dirtiest player in the game and some day will be remembered as teh Lance armstrong of MMA

Preposterous to compare a high school situation to a governing body of combat sports? No. Breaking the rules is universal –be it illegal recruiting, or using banned substances–but it is how you deal with it that differs. Kentucky did it right, Nevada did it wrong in a recent attempt at sanctioning rule violators and ones with previous offenses at that.

Here's where things get a bit "techie." The synthesis of ATP from ADP plus a high-energy phosphate group is called oxidative phosphorylation. This process is dependent on the energy flow through the electron transport chain via electron carriers embedded in the lining of mitochondria. To make this a bit simpler, think of the electron transport chain as working something like a battery. In batteries, the difference between the negative and positive charges creates an energy flow (when the circuit is complete). The "energy flow" in mitochondria is created by protons, which supply the positive charge, and electrons that provide the negative charge.*

That short but intense protocol, when performed for the right number of sets and frequency throughout the week is just one of the three ways I stimulate new growth in your most underdeveloped muscle groups. For example, I would combine that movement with an antagonist (opposite muscle) exercise, such as a pushup, and follow the same protocol. Superset just 2 sets of this combination, and then combined with a frequency model of training, you’ll be on your way to faster results .

Daniel Cormier: Beating Jon Jones bigger than winning the title

This fight is ultimately about the UFC light heavyweight title and a goal Cormier has set for himself ever since a weight cutting disaster robbed him of the chance to compete for an Olympic medal in 2008. Cormier came close to being the best in the wrestling world, but never got the chance to claim the top spot. Now he stands as an undefeated professional fighter who has never lost a round, much less a fight and he doesn't plan on allowing Jon Jones to be the one to take that away from him.

Iuri Alcantara vs. Russell Doane added to UFC Fight Night 51 in Brasilia

Meanwhile, Doane came to the UFC just this year after picking up a handful of titles on the regional fight scene. He debuted in the first UFC card of 2014, picking up a technical submission win over Leandro Issa in Singapore. He then returned to action earlier this month at UFC 175, where he picked up a hard-fought split-decision win over Marcus Brimage.

Twitter Mailbag: The enigma of Nick Diaz, the rivalry of Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, plus more

This is a fight that’s fun partly because it feels like what you’d do if the UFC were just a real-life video game for you to control at your whim. Who would you throw in there, just to see what it would look like, if things like weight classes and records and contracts were of no concern? You’d do Jon Jones vs. Cain Velasquez, obviously. You might even do Demetrious Johnson vs. Mark Hunt, just because you’re a sicko. But also, you know it wouldn’t take long before you queued up Silva vs. Diaz, homie. That’s what this is. It’s as much about satisfying our curiosity as anything else. And the fact that, on paper, it seems like a fight that would be a hell of a lot of fun to watch? Brother, that doesn’t hurt either.

The three rounds were over and Lauzon was the winner. It’s a sentence that shouldn’t come as a surprise to mixed martial arts fans, but the victor in this fight wasn’t UFC lightweight contender Joe Lauzon ; it was his son Joey, who came out of the womb swinging and into the beginning of three rounds of chemotherapy within a week of his birth. If you want to call your child being diagnosed with neuroblastoma the worst news any parent can hear, that doesn’t cover it. Not by a long shot. But that was what faced Lauzon and his fiancé Katie Silva after Joey was born on January 12th of this year. The birth of the couple’s first child wasn’t easy, with Joey not even breathing as he came into the world. Luckily, a NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) team was on hand at Weymouth, Massachusetts’ South Shore Hospital, and soon Joey began breathing. “It was super shallow,” said Lauzon. “He had an Apgar score of 1 or 2, which normally a healthy baby has a score of 8 or 9.” The Apgar score assesses the immediate health of a child after birth. A score below 3 is considered critically low.

UFC middleweight Kevin Casey issues apology after failing his post-fight drug test

Kevin Casey (8-3, 1 NC) had to earn his way back to the UFC by getting some wins outside of the promotion. After a 3-0 stint culminating in a RFA middleweight title, Casey returned to the Octagon and wiped out Bubba Bush in just a tick over a minute. A great way to make the most out of a 2nd chance, but sadly the story took a turn for the worse, as Casey tested positive for the banned steroid drostanolone. With his impressive KO win taken away (now a no contest). Casey has owned up to his failed test, and has since apologized on Twitter:

Tom Watson's UFC Fight Night 47 prep: Tea parties and dressing gowns

Of course I have to Wrestle, Kickbox and Grapple but ‘typical’ as an adjective refers to something ‘normal’ or ‘to be expected’. I believe this is how I trained for much of my career. Unfortunately mixed martial arts is not typical and is on the contrary, completely unpredictable. Now I try to train with this is mind. I do not plan my schedule and I try to incorporate as many different workouts as I can. I have started cycling a lot. Sprint and track work, Zumba and even a power plate class. I tried to get involved in Camel wrestling in Egypt in December. Its a remarkable thing watching two camels go at it. It really picks up a pace. True story.

Brazilian Marlon Moraes will put his WSOF bantamweight title on the line for the time in September against an unbeaten foe.. Moraes (13-4-1) is set to take on Josh Hill (10-0) in the main event of WSOF 13. That word comes from a report from Yahoo! Sports‘ Kevin Iole, citing WSOF matchmaker Ali Abdlaziz.. WSOF 13 will take place Sept. 13, though a location and venue has yet to be announced. The main card will air on NBC Sports Network following prelims on MMAjunkie.. Moraes won the WSOF 135-pound title in March with a dominant unanimous decision win over Josh Rettinghouse at WSOF 9. That victory kept him unbeaten for the promotion and gave him seven straight wins.. Moraes burst onto the scene at WSOF 1 nearly two years ago when he upset former WEC champion Miguel Torres by split decision. He then knocked out Tyson Nam with a head kick at WSOF 2. Wins over Brandon Hempleman and Carson Beebe earned him the inaugural title fight against Rettinghouse, and he didn’t disappoint.. Canada’s Hill will be looking to stay unbeaten. He returned to action in June after nearly two years on the sidelines and scored a first-round knockout of Mike Adams at WSOF Canada’s second event.

Magnus Cedenblad-Scott Askham Middleweight Tilt Added to UFC Fight Night Sweden

Magnus Cedenblad fights on home soil in October. | Dave Mandel/ UFC Fight Night Sweden has added a middleweight contest pitting Magnus Cedenbland against Scott Askham . UFC officials announced the bout on Thursday. UFC Fight Night Sweden takes place in Stockholm on Oct. 4 and includes a welterweight matchup pitting Amir Sadollah against Nicholas Musoke as well as a light heavyweight clash between Ilir Latifi and Jan Blachowicz . With a 2-1 mark in the UFC, Cedenbland will look to improve his record against the debuting Askham. “Jycken” dropped his Octagon debut to Francis Carmont by submission before winning his last two, tapping out Jared Hamman at UFC 164 and Krzysztof Jotko at UFC Fight Night “Munoz vs. Mousasi.” Askham has posted a 12-0 mark as a professional while competing for the likes of the Cage Warriors Fighting Championship and British Association of Mixed Martial Arts organizations. The Ludus Magnus product’s last outing came in June, when he earned a technical knockout victory over Max Nunes in the main event of a BAMMA Fight Night card.

Video: Jon Jones suffers cut over eye in training, stitches required

Jon Jones needs to up his head game ahead of UFC 178 , at least when it comes to protection. The fighter recently suffered a bad cut over his eye during training, one that required a trip to the doctor for stitches. Report is that the stitches will be out within a few days and he'll be back to training with in a week, but it's exactly the kind of scare fans don't need leading into a just recently announced matchup with Daniel Cormier on September 27. Jones released a statement and a couple of videos of his doctor's visit, over Instagram.

Glover Teixeira lined up for fall return against Phil Davis

For Phil Davis, the conversation is about more than winning. His UFC record is a stellar 8-2 (1 NC) and he's never lost back to back fights in his career. His only losses come to top competition in Rashad Evans and Anthony Johnson . But, the way he has won and lost in the UFC has become increasingly more predictable, increasingly less fun, and with it, the criticism has mounted. Davis should be primed to "turn the corner" as a talent. Six years in as a pro, he should be entering his peak years, but a bad beating at the hands of Anthony Johnson, last time out, have many fans (and his boss) wondering whether or not that will ever happen. At 29, he's still a fairly young fighter in a very thin (and old) division, but if he doesn't show more in this fight than he did in his last few he may find himself under heavy fire from the UFC brass.

Matt Hughes vs. Renzo Gracie superfight set for ADCC 2015

Matt Hughes and Renzo Gracie , who fought at the UFC 112 card in Abu Dhabi in 2010, will battle in a superfight at ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship’s next edition, scheduled for September 2015 in Manaus, Brazil.

The Savage Truth: One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

The Association of Boxing Commissions this week held its annual conference in Clearwater Beach, Fla. As I told you a couple weeks ago, it was presented with a proposal from California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer Andy Foster that would have allocated 20 percent of the ABC’s yearly revenue -- a stream he projected to be around $12,000 -- to smaller commissions to help with drug testing they would otherwise not be able to afford. The proposal was effectively killed when the voting members tabled the discussion until next year’s conference. There was very little support in the room at the lightly attended conference. ABC Treasurer Buddy Embanato from Louisiana made it clear he was not in favor of the proposal. He stated that 20 percent of ABC revenue per year would come to a little more than $2000 per annum, much less than Foster estimated, and that it would do very little to stem the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Embanato also told that his state does not even require any drug testing for combat sports, but if promoters want to have it done, they are free to request the commission do it, provided they foot the bill.

MetroPCS Move of the Week - Ovince Saint Preux vs Nikita Krylov

Ovince Saint Preux takes advantage of Nikita Krylov mistake and secures a first round submission victory, in this MetroPCS Move of the Week.

- At the 4:14 mark, Schultz finally pulls out of the headlock that Goodridge held him in from the moment they hit the canvas. Wisely, Goodridge locks Schultz down, while Schultz fires some short punches into Gary’s ribs, ditching the no-closed-fist rule. In the modern era, this stalemate would eventually provoke a standup from the ref. But Big John lets them fight through it.

Although Elvis Mutapcic has lost just one fight since 2011, what transpired in his defeat to Jesse Taylor at World Series of Fighting 7, has prompted the middleweight to make some changes. Heading into his December 7th fight with Taylor, not only had Mutapcic won five straight fights, he had forced himself onto a lot of people’s radars by winning the Maximum Fighting Championship title. When Mutapcic squared off with Taylor, however, the 28 year-old was overwhelmed by the latter’s noted wrestling game. As a result, Mutapcic was handed a unanimous decision loss, and his bid to face David Branch for the WSOF belt ended. “I made a few mistakes leading up to that fight. I changed my style. I made mistakes leading up to the fight and in my training camp,” Mutapcic relayed in a recent media call to promote the August 9th, WSOF 12 card, which will see him take on Kelvin Tiller. “I didn’t have the sense of urgency and I didn’t think he’d be able to control me the way he did. I learned the lesson the hard way.” “I’ve improved my wrestling quite a bit and this is the first camp where I’ve been able to train full-time without working a full-time job,” furthered Mutapcic (13-3), who had scored wins over the likes of Sam Alvey, Joseph Henle and Cezar Ferreira before facing Taylor.

Kevin Casey apologizes for failed drug test at UFC 175

Word of Casey’s positive test came with a second failure stemming from the UFC’s International Fight Week. Robert Drysdale, who submitted Keith Berish at The Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale, was flagged for a testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio of 12-to-1, which is double the limit allowed by the NSAC. He has also been temporarily suspended pending an appeal.

Video: Jon Jones Sports Bad Cut Over Left Eye, Gets Stitched up

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has a date with Daniel Cormier at UFC 178 on Sept. 27. Preparations for arguably the stiffest test of "Bones" career are underway, but there has been a slight setback.

This went on for months until I explained the situation to my father. After helping me practice my jab-cross, my father gave me some advice along the lines of mayor Cameron Hamilton. He told me that I needed to tell Benny during lunchtime to come outside with me to “show him something.” Once outside, I was to say “put up your hands” and proceed to kick his ass. So naturally, despite being scared out of my wits, I followed the game plan to the tee and eventually won the fight. I even bought him some ice cream after to soften the blow to his ego. It worked all too well, until Benny’s mother took him to the police station and had his bulbous body photographed with all those bruises and then sued my parents. I, not Benny the Bulbous Bully, got expelled from school. And believe it or not, they walked away 10k richer. You certainly can’t hustle a hustler.
