Pennsylvania Judge Sentenced For 28 Years For Selling Kids to the Prison System

Mark Ciavarella Jr, a 61-year old former judge in Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to nearly 30 years in prison for literally selling young juveniles for cash. He was convicted of accepting money in exchange for incarcerating thousands of adults and children into a prison facility owned by a developer who was paying him under the table. The kickbacks amounted to more than $1 million. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has overturned some 4,000 convictions issued by him between 2003 and 2008, claiming he violated the constitutional rights of the juveniles – including the right to legal counsel and the right to intelligently enter a plea. Some of the juveniles he sentenced were as young as 10-years old. Ciavarella was convicted of 12 counts, including racketeering, money laundering, mail fraud and tax evasion. He was also ordered to repay $1.2 million in restitution. His "kids for cash" program has revealed that corruption is indeed within the prison system, mostly driven by the growth in private prisons seeking profits by any means necessary.

Carmelo Anthony interested in talking to Pau Gasol about playing for Knicks

Anthony found the Bulls' and Rockets' presentations to be "tremendous," one source close to him said, and has seemed to relish in the recruiting process. The Knicks' final pitch was important, and it is believed that a week of franchises gushing over Anthony left him needing Jackson to leave no doubt that he was completely wanted in New York, sources said. In other words, Jackson risked trouble if he played it too cool.

Morning Report: Matt Hughes urges Georges St-Pierre to 'get out' of the UFC

"He did get beat up last time," said Hughes. "I don't know if he wants to come back and take a beating like that. He's going to come back against a guy like Robbie Lawler, who's going to hit him. And Johny Hendricks, who's going to hit him. So there's not many reasons for him to come back ... You tell me what's he got to come back for?"

TUF 19 Finale fight card preview: Prelim card breakdown and predictions

This is the much anticipated UFC debut for highly decorated grappling wiz Drysdale. Drysdale's list of grappling accomplishments is insane as he has been one of the elite grapplers on the world stage for years now. He made his MMA debut in 2010 and is a perfect 6-0 with 6 first round submission finishes. The black mark on Drysdale right now is his 2013 drug test failure. In this age of PED and TRT talk in MMA, he'll need to prove he's clean here. Berish also makes his UFC debut here. Outside of the UFC he holds a win over TUF's Patrick Walsh. Unfortunately for Berish, he's also a ground fighter. That's bad news here because it means his strength plays right to Drysdale's strength - and there's no questioning that Drysdale is the superior grappler. This is clearly designed to be a Drysdale showcase, and I suspect he delivers as expected. Prediction: Robert Drysdale by submission

Alex Caceres' journey from backyard fighting to breakthrough moment a longshot

LAS VEGAS -- Now that he's here, Alex Caceres can admit that this whole thing was a long shot. He wasn't supposed to get here, maybe at all, but definitely not this fast. Not after starting his fight career in a Florida backyard, a la Kimbo Slice. Not after winning only a single match in season 12 of The Ultimate Fighter. And definitely not after being stopped in both of his first two official trips to the octagon.

UFC 175: Weidman vs. Machida - Uriah Hall vs. Thiago Santos Preview and Prognostication

As I said, I think Hall's problem is a lack of awareness. In both of his UFC losses, he seemed completely ignorant of what he had to do to gain those incremental advantages that allow you to win a decision. As abstract as it is, I think 'urgency' is a real quality in MMA: fighters who understand to the second, when they are behind on the scorecards. MMA is a sport punctuated by violence as much as it's grounded in inertia. There are long intervals of clinching, top control, and feinting that make a fight neutral: a byproduct of innumerable mechanics among so many different styles conflicting with one another. The really good fighters know how to counter that inertia with a nice quick and swift trip takedown, spinning back elbow, or feint into a fight altering kick or punch. And so forth...

How UFC 175's George Roop went from juvie to the UFC

“Me and my friends were in a stolen vehicle, and the cops, they were chasing us,” he said. “I can run, so it took them a while to catch me with their whole perimeter set up. And they eventually caught me, and one of the police officers was really pissed off and he had me in a pressure point (hold), bending me over the car.

The rise and spectacular fall of Chael Sonnen, UFC superstar - Part two

In regards to the testimony issue, there is a continued blatant oversight and disregard for Chael’s testimony/responses to Commissioner Zinkin that fully clarify, explain and vitiate his statement that "he [Chael] spoke to Kizer." If you read the transcript of Chael’s responses to Commissioner Zinkin (and, perhaps, print them for the public to read), Chael made it unambiguously clear what he meant – "my management and/or my manager." As someone who represents people/companies, it is not uncommon to hear clients who are represented by agents, managers and attorneys to speak in such a manner (i.e. that they spoke to so-n-so or handled "y" matter). While the initial tweet about Chael’s initial comment is plausibly understandable (solely from the perspective that people like to create controversy to increase readers/viewers), there would not have been such an over zealous and unfounded determination to crucify Chael if there was some responsible journalistic follow-up reporting clarifying Chael’s subsequent testimony. Specifically, what he testified to in response to Commissioner Zinkin (no different than the CSAC issuing a retraction of its incorrect press release and subsequent clarification of its decision).

Video: CroCop fought at GLORY 17 with a bad elbow infection

Mirko 'CroCop' Filipovic had a tough training camp for his GLORY 17 LOS ANGELES rematch with Jarrell 'Big Baby' Miller. The years of training have taken their toll. Soreness from training is a daily hell, a calf muscle tore under the strain and - worst of all - a cut on his elbow became infected and remained so for most of the camp plus the fight itself. It has required regular draining and is still being treated with antibiotics.
