Preview: UFC 213 ‘Nunes vs. Shevchenko 2’ - Nunes vs. Shevchenko

It was supposed to give us Cody Garbrandt - T.J. Dillashaw for the Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight belt, and until recently, fan-favorite finishers Robbie Lawler and Donald Cerrone were supposed to meet. Both fights have been scrapped. Yet somehow, despite these dearly felt losses, UFC 213 remains a solid card. A rematch between women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko has a lot to do with that. The two fought to a competitive decision in 2016, and now that Nunes holds the belt, Shevchenko may be the only one who can take it from her. In the co-main event, Yoel Romero and Robert Whittaker compete for the interim middleweight title. Heavyweight legends Fabricio Werdum and Alistair Overeem will go toe-to-toe in a legacy-defining rubber match before that, and lightweight champion Anthony Pettis makes his return to 155 pounds in the main card opener, facing off against action fighter extraordinaire Jim Miller . Let us take a closer look at each UFC 213 “Nunes vs. Shevchenko 2” matchup this Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with analysis and picks: UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship Amanda Nunes (14-4) vs.

The Bottom Line: The Best Path Forward

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * For much of the year, a Michael Bisping - Georges St. Pierre UFC middleweight title fight has been floated as the next bout for each man. The fight didn’t really make sense for anyone besides Bisping -- he would get the biggest money fight of his career -- yet still it hung over and paralyzed two divisions. UFC President Dana White this week announced his intention to have St. Pierre’s return fight instead be against the winner of Tyron Woodley - Demian Maia for the UFC welterweight crown that GSP never lost. It’s still not a given that will happen as St. Pierre has expressed his continuing preference for Bisping, but if the shift takes place, it will be a tremendous development and is clearly the best option for the fans and the sport. It’s been a rough year for the Ultimate Fighting Championship , with diminishing fan interest and a lot of hostility directed at the promotion from fighters and fans.

Fact Check: ‘The Ultimate Fighter 25’ Finale

He calls himself “The Highlight,” and Justin Gaethje ’s forthcoming arrival in the Ultimate Fighting Championship has been greeted with widespread anticipation. The undefeated former World Series of Fighting champion will meet Michael Johnson in “The Ultimate Fighter 25” Finale main event on Friday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, a reputation for unbridled violence preceding him. Their five-round battle at 155 pounds tops a lineup that features everything from top-shelf prospects to grizzled veterans. Gaethje has compiled a perfect 17-0 record with 15 finishes since turning professional in 2011. The 28-year-old Safford, Arizona, native established himself as one of the premier flyweights outside the auspices of the UFC while competing under the WSOF flag, racking up 10 consecutive victories. Johnson figures to provide him with the sternest test of his career. A finalist on Season 12 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” he has gone 9-7 in the UFC, with high-profile wins over Tony Ferguson , Edson Barboza and Dustin Poirier .

UFC 213 Statistical Matchup Analysis: Nunes vs. Shevchenko 2

The centerpiece of the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s International Fight Week is anchored by a rematch between two of the best women’s bantamweights on the planet. Defending champion Amanda Nunes has looked like she is in a league of her own since capturing the title against Miesha Tate in the first round at UFC 200. She needed even less time to defend the belt against Ronda Rousey at UFC 207 in December, punching out the former champion within the first minute of the fight. Following a breakout 2016 campaign, which also included a unanimous decision victory over Valentina Shevchenko prior to her winning the title, this will be the first fight of the year for the “Lioness,” who is currently riding a five-fight win streak. On the other side of the cage will be Shevchenko. The former muay Thai champion has continued to get more comfortable in the Octagon throughout her four fights in the UFC. “Bullet” debuted in the promotion in 2015 with a short-notice split decision win against Sarah Kaufman and then proceeded to lose a unanimous decision to Nunes.

Firas Zahabi: Conor McGregor going 'borderline illegal' is best shot to beat Floyd Mayweather

“Mayweather is a lot smaller than Conor McGregor, and when (McGregor) comes forward, if you try to punch (Mayweather), he’s just going to slip, slide, defend, counter. Of course, you’re going to have to punch him. It’s a boxing match, absolutely. But I would spend a lot of my time dirty boxing Mayweather – grabbing the back of his head, throwing uppercuts, doing things that are borderline illegal. They’re not illegal, (but) the referee is going to have to come in a break you up. The referee is going to have to come in and save Mayweather.”

Amanda Nunes: 5 Defining Moments

She has come to embody clinical ferocity. Amanda Nunes will put her Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight crown on the line against Valentina Shevchenko in the UFC 213 main event this Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, their rematch serving as the cornerstone for the organization’s International Fight Week festivities. “The Lioness” will carry a five-fight winning streak into the cage, a run of success that includes a three-round unanimous decision over Shevchenko in March 2016. Nunes, 29, has compiled a stellar 7-1 record since joining the UFC roster a little less than four years ago, the American Top Team standout having battered Germaine de Randamie , Sheila Gaff , Shayna Baszler and others along the way. A devastating finisher, she has delivered 13 of her 14 career victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission. Though relatively brief, Nunes’ career has its share of defining moments. Here are five that stand out: 1. ‘TUF 25’ Recap: Episode 12

WHAT A FINISH! @jtmoneymma submits @TheJamesKrause in the third round and fights FRIDAY vs. Dhiego Lima for $250K! https://t.co/KRFbJ0hL0I — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) July 6, 2017 Wednesday’s episode will decide who will meet Dhiego Lima in the TUF 25 Finale: either Jesse Taylor or James Krause . That is, if Krause is able to fight in tonight’s episode because of the eye injury that occurred in his quarterfinal win over Ramsey Nijem . At Team Dillashaw’s training session, T.J. Dillashaw brings in TUF 24 winner Tim Elliott , who is Krause’s training partner in real-life. Naturally, Dillashaw and his fellow coaches are worried about Krause’s left eye. Nothing is stopping Krause whilst training, though, and as he says that as long he’s cleared to take on Taylor, nothing will stop him from winning this season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” Taylor is a beast in training as well as he says he believes that he and Krause are clearly the two best fighters in the entire house. Still, Taylor is convinced he will prevail if and when he meets Krause in the Octagon because not only of how they matchup but also because of how much he’s trained with him this season.

Professional Fighters League Inaugural Event Peaks at 495,000 Viewers on NBCSN

The Professional Fighters League debut event on June 30 drew the second-largest audience ever on NBC Sports Network. According to a release from the promotion, PFL “Daytona” averaged 291,000 viewers and peaked at 495,000 for the headliner between Jon Fitch and Brian Foster . The card was held in the infield at the Daytona International Speedway and was supposed to precede the NASCAR Coca-Cola 250, but the race was canceled due to rain. In the main event, Fitch submitted Foster with a rear-naked choke 3:12 into the second round of their welterweight encounter. The card also saw UFC veterans Jason High and Ronny Markes take decision triumphs in earlier bouts. PFL “Daytona” attracted 82,000 viewers in the P18-49 demographic and 121,000 viewers in the P25-54 demographic. According to the release, “the race cancellation added to the atmosphere as many of the drivers and their crews packed the venue to watch the Professional Fighters League kick off Fourth of July Weekend with their own brand of fireworks.” “The atmosphere was electric,” said PFL President of Event Production and Business Operations Carlos Silva.
