B.J. Penn: 'I guess I just needed some closure'

Here's the Lawless Hellscape Colorado Has Become Six Months After Legalizing Weed

The DEA is  now asking  the Food and Drug Administration to remove marijuana from its list of the most dangerous and harmful drugs. This could signal a radical shift in the way our government regulates and enforces weed. Marijuana advocates hail the decision as a necessary policy step towards eventual legalization, removing a critical roadblock that has constrained marijuana legalization on the local and federal levels. It is, of course, the first step of many.

BJ Penn: A Fighter Retires

There was always a running joke among a couple members of the UFC production team and myself when it came to BJ Penn. Event after event we would trade our war stories, trying to top each other by revealing the journey it took to finally track down the ever-elusive “Prodigy.” After it was all over, we would laugh at the same punchline: “But when we got him, he gave us gold.” Finally, after another chase that ended up with the aforementioned gold, I let Penn in on the joke. I told him “we chase you and chase you, and you drive us crazy, but when we catch you, you give us everything we need and all is forgiven.” Penn broke out into a hearty laugh before letting me in on another secret. “My girlfriend says the same thing.” That girlfriend at the time, Shealen, is now the mother of Penn’s two daughters, and as she walked into the media room after his bout against Frankie Edgar Sunday night, you could see the pain on her face after watching someone who is more than just a fighter to her lose. It wasn’t about the end result, but about seeing the end. It’s probably one of the reasons why Penn called it quits at the age of 35, to not put his family and those close to him through watching him in decline, and all would agree that he made the right call.

I should also point out that Whole Foods has a 98% accuracy rating, which is about the same as any other grocer, so instead of making this a Whole Foods witch hunt, it can be a wake up call to be more aware of what you’re buying and for how much.

Leading into the contest, commentators Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg tried to sell fans that Davis was going to be a tough test for Rousey. She wasn’t. Davis landed a total of two strikes during the fight, while Rousey landed 16. Most of Rousey’s strikes came after she kneed Davis to the body and threw her to the ground. Once on the mat, Rousey unloaded a series of punches to Davis’ head, and Yves Lavigne mercifully waved off a fight that had to leave some wondering why the matchup was booked in the first place .

Perfect Ten – Ronda Wins in 16 Seconds

LAS VEGAS, July 5 – Hyperbole just doesn’t work with UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey anymore. In the fourth defense of her crown against Alexis Davis Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, Rousey was flawless, knocking Davis out in just 16 seconds. Simply put, it was one of the most spectacular performances you will see at the championship level in the Octagon. But the 27-year-old former Olympic Judo Bronze medalist believes the best is yet to come. “I got hit once,” smiled Rousey. “I think I can do better.” The fighters began trading as soon as the fight began, and Rousey quickly rocked Davis with a right hand and right knee. From there, she sent the Canadian for a ride with a perfectly executed throw to the mat. From there, she fired off with punches to the face that knocked Davis out and brought referee Yves Lavigne in to stop the fight at the 16-second mark. Perfection. With the win, Rousey improves to 10-0; Davis falls to 16-6. The 16-second knockout is tied with Frank Shamrock 's win over Kevin Jackson for second fastest in a UFC championship fight.

By the Numbers: TUF 19 Finale

If this really was goodbye, then Frankie Edgar gave B.J. Penn a bittersweet send-off. In his first bout in a year, Edgar encountered little resistance from Penn in “ “The Ultimate Fighter 19” Finale headliner, stopping the popular Hawaiian with ground-and-pound 4:16 into the third round at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on Sunday night. Edgar was in control from the outset, relying on his quick hands and footwork in exchanges while mixing in takedowns in each frame. Now 3-0 against “The Prodigy,” Edgar has his sights set on 145-pound gold. Meanwhile, Penn could be riding off into the sunset -- this time for good. Here is a by-the-numbers look at the “TUF 19” finale, with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com. Related: Matches to Make After UFC 175 5:18:07: Total Octagon time for B.J. On Saturday during the weigh , B.J. looked like he had not problem making 145 and during those weigh in, B.J. had the most support from the crowd. Unfortunately this is where the story is going to have a terrible ending. The fight yesterday did not live up to the hype of B.J. returning. What we saw from B.J. was another athlete that lost their fight with father time. At no point in the fight did I have I feeling of, yes B.J. has a chance. What I saw instead was a dominant performance from Frankie Edgar and sealed the fate of the legendary career of B.J. Penn.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Red, White & Bruised

The UFC middleweight and women’s bantamweight champions held serve over Independence Day weekend, defending their titles in equally decisive yet decidedly different fashions. In the main event of UFC 175 , Chris Weidman affirmed his status as the new king of the 185-pounders, putting to rest any notion that his two victories over longtime ruler Anderson Silva were flukes. This time, the “All-American” went up against Silva’s friend and training partner, Lyoto Machida , and while conventional wisdom held that wrestler Weidman’s safest path to victory against the karateka would be on the ground, the champion took a different route. Through the first three rounds, Weidman used a mix of constant pressure, diverse striking and takedowns to lump up his challenger. Although Machida provided some excitement with a late surge in round five, Weidman displayed a durable chin and retained his belt via unanimous decision. Ronda Rousey needed far less time to defend her belt in the co-main event. Sixteen seconds was all it took for the champion to hurl challenger Alexis Davis to the ground and punch her unconscious, further widening the gap between Rousey and the rest of the women’s 135-pound division.

Trouble Shooting Fighter Diet

Complaint 15: "I like berries, lard, beef, fruit, nuts and fish. I don't touch sugar or dairy. I've been following this diet for 5 months but can't lose any flab" Solution: That sounds like Paleo diet to me? I guess it's time to change what you're doing. I'm not a fan of Paleo and when I say I'm not they tell me how many studies there have been done who show people lose fat on this diet. OF COURSE they do when they go from eating TOO many calories, TOO much sugar, TOO many carbs combined with TOO much fat and chronic surplus of calories. However, did they lose fat or did they lose fat and muscle plus got skinny fat? All diet methods have pros and cons, but Paleo isn't the holy grail and so are no other. ALL methods will have drawbacks. The key is to find the approach YOU get results with that you can maintain and the approach you enjoy.

The Hit List: The Top 5 moments from UFC 175 and the TUF 19 Finale

The win was impressive not just because Weidman mostly dominated. He did, but he also had to survive a stretch of adversity for the first time in his UFC career when Machida won an exchange and seemed to stun the champion. Machida won the fourth, but Weidman refused to give ground, reversing the momentum and capturing the fifth with the same effective mixture of striking and wrestling that won the first three rounds. Sure, Machida has lost before, but no one else has really handled him over the long haul the way Weidman did, and that should tell you all you need to know about just how good the champ is.

The Walkmen: UFC 175 Walkout Songs

Chris Weidman showed the heart of a champion. In the UFC 175 main event on Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, the “All-American” dug deep in defeating Lyoto Machida by unanimous decision to retain the Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight crown. Over the course of the final 10 minutes, a fatigued and at times hurt Weidman refused to back down in the face of the most adversity he has faced inside the cage. Tom Petty’s song “I Won’t Back Down” was a perfect anthem of defiance when Weidman was an underdog. Now as a hunted champion, the 30-year-old stuck with the walkout track that saw him shock the world not once but twice against the great Anderson Silva . Despite walking out to a song about non-violent protest, Weidman unloaded on Machida with every weapon at his disposal for the first three rounds of their title bout. On the 1992 hip hop club hit “Jump Around,” Everlast raps “Pack it up, pack it in, let me begin. I came to win. Battle me, that’s a sin.” Trained by his father, Shotokan karate master Yoshizo Machida, the middleweight challenger has been trained to jump around on the balls of his feet to perfect his striking stance since he was 3 years old.

Matches to Make After ‘The Ultimate Fighter 19’ Finale

Frankie Edgar closed the book on his trilogy with B.J. Penn . In fact, he slammed it shut. Edgar roughed up and then finished the former two-division Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholder in “The Ultimate Fighter 19” Finale headliner on Sunday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, stopping the Hawaiian with some ferocious third-round ground-and-pound. Penn met a bloody and unfortunate end 4:16 into round three before announcing his intention to walk away from the sport for good. In a fight that was never competitive, Edgar peppered his rival with quick punching combinations on the feet. He was even more effective on the ground. Edgar struck for takedowns in all three rounds, slicing open “The Prodigy” with a third-round elbow strike moments before he finished him with unanswered punches. In wake of “The Ultimate Fighter 19” Finale, here are six matchups that ought to be considered: Frankie Edgar vs. Ricardo Lamas: Edgar reminded everyone that he remains a top-shelf featherweight and a serious threat to almost anyone at 145 pounds.

49
UFC Weekend Aftermath: Frankie Edgar is still 'The Answer'

Stock Up: Chris Weidman. Yeah, I know what you're thinking: "Thanks, Captain Obvious." But Weidman's victory over Machida was a tour de force, one which answered so many of the questions which remained unanswered going into the middleweight title bout. Weidman showed off a magnificent fight IQ by never letting Machida get comfortable, cutting off his angles, and yet still pushing forward without rushing in. Weidman certainly demonstrated he has a chin, when he took everything Machida dished out late and kept on coming back for more. And, when he was finally in something resembling trouble for the first time in his 12-fight career, he showed championship heart in the fifth round, keeping his composure and regaining control of the fight to seal his win. The champ is well on his way toward the top of the pound-for-pound lists.
