UFC 226 staff picks: How many like Daniel Cormier to make history vs. Stipe Miocic?

In the co-main event, Derrick Lewis (19-5 MMA, 10-3 UFC) meets Francis Ngannou (11-2 MMA, 6-1 UFC) in a battle of heavyweight hard hitters. That fight was moved to the co-feature after champion Max Holloway fell out of his featherweight title fight against Brian Ortega. (And for what it’s worth, prior to that fight falling apart, our staff members had given Holloway the 9-5 picks edge.) But things between the big men are right down the middle. It’s a 7-7 split in our picks between Lewis and Ngannou, even though Ngannou is a favorite of nearly 4-1 – the second biggest favorite on the card.

3 UFC 226 ‘Miocic vs. Cormier’ Play-by-Play, Results & Round-by-Round Scoring

Michael Chiesa vs. Anthony Pettis Round 1 Chiesa closes the distance in a hurry, catches Pettis' first kick and plants "Showtime" on his back at the foot of the fence. Pettis loops his right arm around Chiesa's head to try and control the top man's posture, but Chiesa pulls him off the wall and flattens him out. Chiesa briefly threatens to catch an arm-triangle choke, but Pettis escapes out the backdoor and suddenly sweeps to top position. Pettis tries to jump on the back of Chiesa as they stand, but he can't establish the position and the lightweights reset in the center with just over three minutes on the clock. Chiesa initiates a clinch, gets spun against the wall by Pettis, then spins the Roufusport product around and knees him in the gut. Chiesa hits a trip takedown halfway through the round, fights off a brief armbar attempt and postures up in Pettis' guard as they fight near the wall. Pettis elevates Chiesa until he's standing, fires a kick at the Sikjitsu fighter's head and then jumps to his feet. With one minute left, it's Pettis stalking Chiesa around the outside, landing heavy low kicks but missing as he winds up for a spinning attack.

The Film Room: Stipe Miocic

UFC 226 is now available on Amazon Prime . Stipe Miocic can strengthen his argument as one of the all-time greats when he puts his Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title on the line against 205-pound titleholder Daniel Cormier in a champion-versus-champion main event superfight at UFC 226 on Saturday in Las Vegas. The latest installment of The Film Room focuses on the Strong Style Fight Team cornerstone. Buckeye Pride Like Cormier, Miocic got a late start in MMA but entered the cage as a Golden Gloves boxing champion and a former NCAA Division I wrestler. He made his professional debut in 2010 and just a year later was fighting for the UFC; Miocic won the heavyweight championship only six years into his career. Since coming to the UFC, he has proven himself as one of the biggest punchers in the division, with the wrestling chops to hold his own on the ground. Miocic has genuine one-punch knockout power, with 14 of his 18 wins coming by KO or TKO. He does his best work with his right hand and can finish the fight on the lead or when working on the counter.

I agree w/ you too. I just get confused when fans feel the ref should always stand them up. If it’s Fitch or Askren, and they literally hug them all round, please stand them. Otherwise, it’s not the attacking fighter’s fault the other fighter can’t get them off IMO

The Film Room: Daniel Cormier

UFC 226 is now available on Amazon Prime . Daniel Cormier will have the chance to join Conor McGregor as the second fighter in Ultimate Fighting Championship history to hold titles in two weight classes simultaneously, as the 205-pound champion challenges Stipe Miocic for the heavyweight crown in the UFC 226 headliner on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The latest installment of The Film Room puts the American Kickboxing Academy captain’s exploits under the microscope. King of the Grind Cormier did not start training in MMA until he was 29 but entered the sport with a wrestling mastery few others can tout. He was an NCAA All-American at Oklahoma State University, a four-time medalist at the Pan American Games and a two-time member of the United States Olympic team -- a squad he captained in 2008 despite withdrawing from the competition due to kidney failure brought on by weight cutting. Despite lifelong adversity and breaking into MMA at an age when most fighters are hitting their prime, Cormier dominated Strikeforce and won the promotion’s 2011 heavyweight grand prix just three years into his career.
