After Brief Hiatus, Three-Time UFC Veteran Henry Martinez Rekindles Love for MMA

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Henry Martinez walks into the Jackson-Wink MMA gym on a warm summer morning in late July, wearing the extra weight that accompanies parenthood and the type of smile reserved only for the times you get to catch up with old friends. Martinez is nearly two years removed from his last UFC appearance, a brutal head kick knockout courtesy of Daron Cruickshank in December 2012. He’s a little heavier now than he was then, a little wiser and definitely a little happier than he was shortly after that fight, which resulted in his release from the Las Vegas-based promotion. “I put on a little bit of a panza ,” he admits with a grin. “I’m still trying to lose it.” The New Mexico native has fought once since then, losing via second-round TKO to current Bellator talent Desmond Green at New England Fight Nights 7 in May 2013. Mostly, though, Martinez withdrew from his old life, keeping to himself while working to make ends meet and support his newborn daughter. Eventually, the allure of fighting was too much too resist.

Scientists in Scotland Have Created a Working Tractor Beam

Now scientists from the University of Dundee, in Scotland, have created something with a bit more muscle. While most of the documented experiments with tractor-beam technology so far have involved light waves, the team from Dundee used sound waves to manipulate a half-inch triangular prism made of metal and rubber, successfully pulling the target toward the source of the acoustic beam. Half an inch may not sound like much, but it’s a vast improvement on fifty nanometres. The experiment was part of a larger project across four U.K. universities—Bristol, Southampton, Glasgow, and Dundee—and took nine months to complete. The results have been published in  Physical Review Letters .

He instead spoke generally about an awareness of what he’s been through in the past eight months.

Jose Aldo blasts fighters critical of TRT: They're 'pussies trying to find an excuse'

"I see no problem (with TRT usage). A lot of people use something and hide, then they criticize people who admittedly use. I think these are a bunch of pussies trying to find an excuse, fearing to lose fights against who's doing a good job. At one point you have an age that makes it necessary and I see no problem with TRT. I would fight who is doing TRT, who isn't, or who is using other drugs. It doesn't matter to me anyway. The same punch I'll throw in one of these guys, I'll throw in another of them. If it's allowed or not, I don't care because I'll still train and fight as I'm doing right now."

Despite Family Concerns, Silva Seeks Return to Form

Anderson Silva didn’t become someone considered by most to be the greatest mixed martial artist of all-time by following the pack or thinking like everyone else. That single-minded pursuit of a goal can leave hurt feelings along the way, particularly among those closest to the Brazilian icon. So while the 39-year-old Silva had no doubt in his mind that he was going to return to the Octagon after suffering a broken leg in his December 2013 bout against Chris Weidman , telling his wife Dayane and their five children may have been tougher than any rehab he was about to go through. “To tell you the truth, they are not too happy,” said Silva on a Friday teleconference with the media to discuss his return against Nick Diaz on January 31. “But they respect my wish, and now they’re coping with it. “I don’t think anybody’s family would like to see them going to war, and with mine, it wouldn’t be different.” In Silva’s defense, his storied career has shown that if there is something remarkable or otherworldly to be done in the fight game, he’s the one to do it, and taking a comeback fight that will occur less than three months before his 40th birthday is just the kind of challenge the Brazilian icon craves.

Boxing News: Adrien Broner to Face Emmanuel Taylor on Sept. 6 in Cincinnati

For the first time since defeating Carlos Molina and winning the vacant WBA International Super Lightweight title in May, Adrien Broner will return to the ring to meet Emmanuel Taylor. The 12-round junior welterweight bout will serve as the main event of a Showtime card on Saturday, Sept. 6. It marks “The Problem’s” first fight in his hometown of Cincinnati in more than two years, as the card will emanate from U.S. Bank Arena. Broner will look to put more distance between himself and the lone loss of his career, a unanimous decision setback at the hands of Marcos Maidana last year. At only 25 years old, Broner holds a career mark of 28-1, with 22 wins coming by way of knockout. Along the way he has won world titles at 130, 135 and 147 pounds, defeating the likes of Paulie Malignaggi, Daniel “Ponce” de Leon and Gavin Rees. “It’s always good to fight at home,” said Broner in a press release. “It’s overdue. I will not disappoint my Cincinnati fans. I’ll make sure to put up a good show for them. Taylor is a young, talented fighter, but he’s not ready to solve this ‘Problem.

Anderson Silva 'dying to return to the octagon' but says fighting for a title not a priority right now

When the bout was announced, UFC President Dana White said Diaz could potentially earn himself a title shot with an impressive win in the superfight, it’s hard to imagine Silva would get the same consideration after dropping consecutive fights to Weidman. It’s a reality not lost on Silva, who says he’s not ruling out a future return to the top of the division but knows there’s no reason to worry about that right now.

35 Anderson Silva expects ‘best UFC fight ever’ against Nick Diaz

"I believe that it’s going to be the best standup fight of all time in the UFC," he said. "I always pay attention to the best fighters in the UFC and the fighters that could one day be my opponents. I never imagined I would fight Nick Diaz, but I watched his fights because I think he’s an excellent fighter. He has a good jiu-jitsu, an excellent boxing, and I think it’s going to be a great fight. If he doesn’t try to grab me and stall, it’s going to be the best UFC fight ever."

Lost Arts: The European Longsword Part II - Fighting Against Armor

With these kind of forces large scale, highly organized warfare was not the standard practice of the day. Instead militaries favored low intensity, asymmetrical warfare. During the 100 Years War both the French and English referred to this kind of warfare as Chevauchée, which focused on raiding enemy territory and reducing its value to the enemy. Engagements would not really be refereed to as battles so much as raids, ambushes or skirmishes, but they were no less deadly to the combatants. This low grade warfare would feature small raiding groups relying on surprise and fast violence for success. In this kind of warfare a warrior might not always be able to get on his armor or even have it with him at the time of combat, which made being able to fight both unarmored and armored critical skills.

Ray Longo 'definitely not comfortable' with Chris Weidman fighting Vitor Belfort at UFC 181

“If you look at history in the past, you can’t be comfortable with the guy passing a drug test,” Longo said. “I’m just hoping the guy does the right thing and he had an epiphany somewhere and he’s going to do the right thing. Let’s pass the test and fight. So that’s what I want to happen.”

Fight Path: Bellator vet Ben Brewer overcomes rough Tennessee upbringing

MMA has become his outlet for passion and emotion. Having just recently turned 21 years old, he has already built up a frequent-fighting resume, including his eight professional fights in 19 months and 25 amateur fights before that. Of his seven wins, four have finished in the first round, and Saturday’s fight will be his fifth in 11 months.

How Nick Diaz, of all people, took on the system and won

"It's hard out there, especially when the rest of these guys aren't getting paid what they should and they're sitting around and can't open their mouths," Diaz said. "A lot of them have a life on the side and it's very different for a lot of people. Sometimes you don't know what to say. You see guys trying to do what they can, it doesn't work out so they keep their mouth shut. Things can work out for you or they can work out bad. It's a gamble out there."

Opinion: Nick Diaz and the MMA Wars

Nick Diaz will return to the cage on Jan. 31. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com It’s amazing what a little competition can do to a fight promoter. Struggling domestic pay-per-view buy rates, slumping ratings on Fox and the hiring of both Scott Coker and Rich Chou by the Viacom-owned Bellator MMA organization ... that’s the formula creating the environment for the Ultimate Fighting Championship to step up its game in a meaningful way for fight fans who are looking for a strong close to a lackluster 2014 campaign and momentum heading into 2015. For a couple of years, UFC President Dana White has been crying wolf when describing Viacom as a threat to the UFC’s business model. As long as Bjorn Rebney was Bellator’s mastermind, it was not a major threat to the UFC’s core PPV business. When Bellator’s first PPV event, featuring Muhammed Lawal - Quinton Jackson beat expectations, everything suddenly got real. Viacom now had the proof it needed to justify opening its checkbook for future Bellator events. What Bellator’s respectable showing on PPV displayed is that there’s room in the MMA space for a legitimate alternative product to the UFC.

Video: Bellator fighters happy to see tournament format go away

Less than a month before Viacom booted Rebney and COO Tim Danaher in favor of ex-Strikeforce head Coker, a new format foreshadowed change in the MMA promotion’s way of doing business. The format created a pool of former tournament winners that could fight for a title at any time, giving Bellator more flexibility in booking fights. The change followed another slight alteration this past year in which the promotion could exercise the option of putting on an immediate title rematch if a championship bout was particularly exciting.
