The first rematch of the card sees yet another champion crowned in a matter of months.Lance Palmer did just enough to edge champion Almedia into the shadows and regain his championship. The five rounds consisted of two men who understand each other’s strengths and refused to fully engage in them. The real story of the fight comes from Palmer whose improved footwork and head movement could be seen as the most important aspect of this victory. In the first the two men engaged rarely, seeing only a successful takedown from Palmer and a n onslaught of lateral movement. It wasn’t until the third round that the two fully engaged when Palmer thrusted a flurry of combinations on Almedia, stunning the champion and in return eating a punch himself and falling onto the canvas. Palmer quickly recovered and the final two rounds played our similarly to the first. The Team Alpha Male fighter controlled the octagon, kept a steady pace, picked his shots and kept Almedia at bay most of the fight. Palmer emerged victorious the same way that he lost hi belt, via unanimous decision.

TIMBERRRRRR! @KrylovUFC puts Ed Herman to sleep with a massive headkick knockout! #UFC201 https://t.co/24eQqCy13o — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) July 31, 2016 Nikita Krylov brought out the oohs and aahs from the crowd. The Ukrainian prospect knocked out “The Ultimate Fighter 3” finalist with a head kick in the second round of their featured light heavyweight prelim at UFC 201 “Lawler vs. Woodley” on Saturday at Philips Arena in Atlanta. Herman (23-12, 10-9 UFC) hit the canvas 40 seconds into round two. No follow-up shots were necessary. Krylov (21-4, 6-2 UFC) attacked the legs, body and head with kicks, mixed in crisp punches and integrated knees in close quarters through a mostly one-sided first round. Herman was simply outgunned. Early in the second, the two light heavyweights exchanged with throw-caution-to-the-wind punches. Krylov snuck his left leg over Herman’s right shoulder, his shin connecting between the base of the neck and ear. “Short Fuse” collapsed where he stood, his body coming to rest parallel to the base of the cage. The 24-year-old Krylov has won five consecutive bouts, all of them finishes.

Beating the Odds: UFC 201

They say recent results are the clearest indicators of future performance. Not in the case of Jake Ellenberger . Ellenberger was one of three underdogs to author upsets at UFC 201 “Lawler vs. Woodley” on Saturday, as he made Matt Brown look mortal and cut down the Elevation Fight Team rep with a first-round liver kick and follow-up punches at Philips Arena in Atlanta. A loser in five of his previous six bouts, “The Juggernaut” entered the cage at +254, according to BetDSI.com. The notoriously durable Brown, who had never before been stopped by strikes, walked into the Octagon as a -309 favorite. Having thrown out his anchor at Kings MMA , Ellenberger floored the Xenia, Ohio, native with an overhand right during their initial exchange. He then fought through fatigue after his subsequent attacks failed to net the finish, steadied himself in the face of Brown’s increasing pressure and delivered the fight-ending kick. There were others who threw the oddsmakers curveballs, most notably Tyron Woodley . The two-time NCAA All-American wrestler laid waste to American Top Team stablemate Robbie Lawler (-130) in the main event, capturing the Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight crown with a stirring first-round knockout.

Robbie Lawler Dismisses Speculation That Recent Battles Led to KO Loss at UFC 201

It may have just been a matter of time. After authoring back-to-back “Fight of the Year” performances in his first two welterweight title defenses — and having a few other grueling five-round battles in recent years, as well — Robbie Lawler ’s defenses crumbled under the force of one Tyron Woodley overhand right at UFC 201 . Woodley floored the notoriously durable Lawler with that punch and quickly followed up with a few follow-up blows to close the book on the “Ruthless” title reign 2:12 into the opening round of Saturday’s headliner at the Philips Arena in Atlanta. “I feel alright. I mean obviously he caught me with the ol’ T-Wood bomb,” Lawler said. “I was just sitting back a little too much and he took advantage of it. It was his night.” Where Lawler had started slowly in recent bouts against Carlos Condit and Rory MacDonald only to finish with a flurry, Woodley simply didn’t give him a chance to pull off any more championship round magic. “I think right at the end he feinted and I reached with my hands and he threw a punch over the top.

Yair Rodriguez, Dennis Bermudez, Thales Leites Among Favorites at UFC Fight Night 92

Yair Rodriguez has inspired belief among the oddsmakers. Rodriguez according to BetDSI.com has been installed as a healthy -300 favorite ahead of his clash with Alex Caceres (+250) in the UFC Fight Night 92 main event on Saturday at the Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City. Dennis Bermudez (-210) will face Rony Mariano Bezerra (+180) in the featherweight co-headliner. A Chicago-based taekwondo black belt who has spent time training at the powerhouse Jackson-Wink MMA camp in New Mexico, Rodriguez will enter the cage on the strength of a six-fight winning streak. The 23-year-old burst on the scene in 2014, winning “The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America.” Rodriguez last fought at UFC 197 on April 23, when he knocked out Andre Fili with a second-round head kick at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Spawned by Season 12 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series, Caceres now operates out of the MMA Lab in Glendale, Arizona, where he trains under John Crouch. The 28-year-old has followed a three-fight losing streak with back-to-back wins over Masio Fullen and Cole Miller .

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Another UFC Event, Another New No. 1

It used to be a big deal when these rankings were updated to reveal a new fighter sitting atop his or her division. With all due respect to Tyron Woodley and his conquering the welterweight throne, his destruction of Robbie Lawler at UFC 201 in Atlanta was just another episode in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s tumultuous 2016. First it was Dominick Cruz and then Miesha Tate . Next came Stipe Miocic , and then Michael Bisping shocked the world. Eddie Alvarez followed, but the MMA world could hardly even celebrate his 155-pound title win, as Amanda Nunes took Tate’s 135-pound women’s championship just two days later at UFC 200. Now, Woodley is the boss at 170 pounds. To recap, that is seven new UFC champions and seven new divisional leaders in just seven months. If Jon Jones has his United States Anti-Doping Agency suspension upheld later this year, he will be removed from this list, as well, giving us an eighth new No. 1 in 2016. It has been a year of heavy flux, to say the very least. Speaking of USADA, a two-year suspension for formerly fifth-ranked featherweight Chad Mendes sees his removal from the Sherdog.

By the Numbers: UFC 201

Tyron Woodley brought a resounding end to one of the most entertaining, albeit brief, title reigns in recent memory. Woodley leveled American Top Team stablemate Robbie Lawler with an overhand right and polished him off with follow-up punches in the first round of the UFC 201 headliner at Philips Arena in Atlanta on Saturday night. With the victory, Woodley becomes the Las Vegas-based promotion’s ninth 170-pound champion, ending a streak of spectacular performances in title bouts by Lawler. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 201, with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com. 2:12: Time of Woodley’s knockout win over Lawler, the fastest stoppage in UFC welterweight championship history. Lawler’s previous four Octagon appearances had all reached the fifth stanza. 546: Days since Woodley’s last bout, a split decision triumph over Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 183. 8: Significant strikes landed by Woodley before earning his first-round finish. Lawler, meanwhile, landed three significant strikes before succumbing to his opponent’s powerful overhand right.

Hamilton rocked the Pole immediately with a volley of punches and when Grabowski stumbled into the cage, a trio of uppercuts from the Seattle-based brawler iced him. The fight ended in just 14 seconds, one of the quickest knockouts in UFC history.

Thoughts & Shots From UFC 201

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. *** A Tyron Woodley right hand ended the spectacular welterweight title run of “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler in the UFC 201 main event on Saturday at Philips Arena in Atlanta. The two American Top Team quasi-teammates cautiously moved about the cage for nearly two minutes without much interaction before Woodley uncorked a huge right hand that felled Lawler against the cage. The challenger wrested the belt from his friend with follow-up punches, as the stunned champion just couldn’t find his wits in time to defend himself. The upset continued a string of underdog winners who snatched Ultimate Fighting Championship belts from their favored foes. UFC titles have now changed hands seven times since the calendar flipped to 2016. Lawler reigned over the welterweight division for about 19 months, a veritable marathon run compared to some of the other divisions of late.

UFC 201 Talking Points: Woodley enjoying moment & more

ATLANTA In the battle of top welterweights in the world, the nicknames gave it all away: The Chosen One reigns supreme. Tyron Woodley made easy work of Robbie Lawler to lay claim to the UFC belt he has long coveted, an achievement made sweeter since he was a slight underdog before the fight. But ask Woodley and he’ll tell you he saw the moment happening hours before. “I was just nervous that I wasn’t nervous” Woodley revealed about his thoughts before his fight. “Something just told me you have to enjoy this moment, you’ve been in this sport for 10 years and you’ve never enjoyed the moment. … I just felt confident to enjoy this moment, I knew I was going to be the world champion.” “I saw myself several times knocking him out over several different rounds and I visualized it over and over. … I knew he would be thinking about my wrestling, I knew he would be thinking about my right hand, so we had several different plays to get to that right hand or get to a powerful punch.” More from UFC 201: Results | Bonus Recap | Woodley KOs Lawler in one to take title | Kowalkiewicz, Ellenberger, Perez get key wins | Krylov, Hamilton hit big KO's in 201 prelims | Big KO, majority draw kicks off UFC 201 | Backstage interviews: Tyron Woodley, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, Jake Ellenberger, Erik Perez, Nikita Krylov, Anthony Hamilton, Wilson Reis | Watch it again! Khabib Nurmagomedov just 'blacklisted' UFC champ Eddie Alvarez

So Alvarerez says that I never fight with top fighters and talking about my pro record. I'm not sure where he gets that information, but when I fight vs Tibau he was ranked 15, when I fight vs Tavares, he was considered as best Brazilian lightweight, Pat Healy was ranked 10, when I fight RDA he was #5. My last fight, I suppose to face Tony Ferguson who is ranked #3, but he got injured and pulled out, I asked for any light and welterweight fighter for replacement, including Alvarerez, but nobody accept. But your ass, Eddie, got kicked in first UFC fight by cowboy, second fight you won Melendez by split decision, but all experts believes you lost that one unanimously. Third one you win Pettis by split decision and after that you get title shot. You beat RDA without question. Do you really believe, that with that only one UFC victory, you are great fighter and can dictate your terms? I don't think so. Remember, with or without the belt, I will hunt you down. Your name in my blacklist.

Nick Diaz is back - so who's first? - Fighters Only Magazine

At a time when rematches in the UFC seem to be very much in favor, why not re-ignite one of the most fascinating rivalries in welterweight history. The return of Nick Diaz could only be trumped by the announcement the greatest 170lb champion of all time was officially making his return. With both fighters coming back from lengthy lay-offs it would be as fair as it gets with regards to cage rust and provide Diaz with the opportunity to even the score having lost to the French-Canadian at UFC 158. When it comes to draws in the fight game there’s not much bigger than GSP and Diaz. With the UFC requiring an epic main event to top the bill for their debut in Madison Square Garden, New York City, you’d be hard pressed to match two other fighters who can tick as many blockbuster boxes as these two.
