Fortunes changed for five at UFC Fight Night 92

It seemed like almost all the promotion of this past Saturday's UFC show was about making headliner Yair Rodriguez into a new star. Did it work?

Opinion: Tyron Woodley, Champion, Shot Caller, Possible Genius

Rumor: Sonnen vs. Diaz At MSG Under Consideration

With UFC 202 fast approaching, Ultimate Fighting Championship’s biggest fights of the summer will soon be behind them and they will soon be revealing what plans they have in store for their debut at Madison Square Garden. Even though the card will likely host multiple championship fights, perhaps the biggest draw of the card will be a non-title fight much like UFC 200’s was, as well.

Imagining the UFC Champions as Rap Albums, Part 2

If MMA was music, it would have to be rap. Not only is individualism at the forefront of the sport and the genre, but both encompass a unique aesthetic that blends gritty toughness with technical artistry; the word “art” is one-third of MMA, and if we are being honest, rap at its best is everything poetry wishes to be. It is only right then to anoint the greatest MMA fighters in each division by comparing them to the rap albums that best encapsulate their fighting styles, personalities and careers. Read More » Imagining the UFC Champions as Rap Albums, Part 1 In part two of this special feature, we bring you the five remaining Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholders, from lightweight to heavyweight. This, of course, excludes Jon Jones . He was the interim light heavyweight champ but has quietly been taken out of the official UFC rankings. For those curious souls, his album analogue was 2-Pac’s “All Eyez on Me.” I’ll let you use your imagination as to why.  Let us turn our focus to the five champions who have not been stripped: Eddie Alvarez: “The Truth” | Beanie Sigel (1999)   It might seem like I’m picking at low-hanging fruit to choose a rapper from Philadelphia to represent a fighter from Philadelphia, but that’s only partially true.

WWE Legend Rick Flair Just DESTROYED Conor McGregor On Twitter

It would appear as if the entire WWE roster is on Team Diaz, following Friday’s UFC 202 media conference call that pinned McGregor opposite the world of pro-wrestling.

Opinion: Does Unpredictability Hurt UFC’s Mainstream Appeal?

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. *** Tyron Woodley ’s first-round knockout of Robbie Lawler at UFC 201 made him the seventh new Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholder in less than a year. As someone who was considered undeserving of a title shot, Woodley adds his name to a growing list of underdogs who have emphatically proved the naysayers wrong. Does this recent string of title changes and unpredictability bode well for the UFC in the long run? Sure, it’s fun to see that anybody can beat a world champion on any given night; and that hasn’t been clearer than in the past year, as world champions have fallen at a frightening rate against opponents that few thought could usurp them. However, is there any such thing as an “upset” anymore considering how frequently titles have been changing hands? Do the titles mean much of anything anymore considering that nobody can hang on to them long enough to establish themselves as true champions? What we love about mixed martial arts can also be its biggest detriment: unpredictability.

Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz Focused on UFC 202 Rematch, Envision Possible Trilogy

Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight titleholder Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz have begun to fan the flames for their forthcoming rematch. McGregor will meet Diaz in the UFC 202 main event on Aug. 20 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, where he will try to avenge his rear-naked choke submission loss to “The Ultimate Fighter 5” winner. Diaz tapped the Irishman in the second round of their UFC 196 encounter in March, and McGregor vowed to learn from his mistakes. “I feel absolutely amazing. I’ve prepared phenomenal,” McGregor said on Friday during a pre-fight media call. “I did not give enough credit to Nate’s durability and his experience. He has more fights in the UFC than I do [total] fights. Also, [you have] his height and his range and his reactions, and I gave no respect to that. For the first two rounds, he was a heavy bag -- and I was correct in [thinking that] -- but his durability held out. I’ve been preparing for that, and I feel very confident that I can put this man away.” McGregor claimed to have walked away from lucrative opportunities outside the cage in order to prepare for his rematch with Diaz.

The 2016 MMA National Olympic Teams: Brazil

With the 2016 Summer Olympics scheduled for Aug. 5-21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, staff and contributors sat down to put together hypothetical MMA Olympic teams for the following countries: United States, Canada, Japan, Great Britain, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, Poland, Australia and Sweden. This 10-part series will map out the yellow brick road to Rio de Janeiro for the men and women who call the cage home, Zika virus be damned. *** The International Olympic Committee on Oct. 2, 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark, made the historic announcement: Rio de Janeiro would become the first city in South America to host the Summer Olympics. Nearly seven years later, more than 11,000 athletes from 206 countries have descended upon the “Cidade Maravilhosa,” its arms, like Christ the Redeemer, spread wide open. Brazil has captured 108 medals since its Olympic debut in 1920, tying a team record (15) at the 2008 Summer Games in China before breaking it with 17 four years later in London. Sailors Robert Scheidt and Torben Grael remain the most decorated Olympians in the nation’s history, each having reached the podium five times.

This deal further solidifies BT Sport’s commitment to MMA in the UK and should help cultivate and grow their audience with events airing during primetime hours. With the time difference you could have a CW event in the UK followed by a UFC event from overseas for example.

UFC Fighter Fails Drug Test For Anabolic But Won’t Be Punished

The Ultimate Fighting Championship signed a deal with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) to help clean the sport of mixed martial arts and rid the octagon of performance enhancing drugs. Beating the Odds: UFC Fight Night ‘Rodriguez vs. Caceres’

Trevor Smith refused to be a steppingstone. A +102 underdog according to, the Strikeforce veteran turned back previously unbeaten Ultimate Fighting Championship newcomer Joseph Gigliotti (-124), as he claimed a one-sided unanimous decision in their three-round middleweight showcase at UFC Fight Night “Rodriguez vs. Caceres” on Saturday at the Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City. All three judges awarded Smith a 10-8 round, the 35-year-old sweeping the scorecards with matching 30-26 marks. Gigliotti had issues with distance. Smith lured the overzealous Power MMA prospect into close quarters and completed four of his six takedown attempts, per FightMetric . He executed 10 guard passes and out-landed Gigliotti by a 105-24 margin in total strikes. Of the 42 significant strikes Smith landed, 39 were from the clinch or on the ground. He also delivered the signature blow of the bout, as he appeared to break Gigliotti’s nose with a second-round knee strike that resulted in a knockdown. Smith was one of two underdogs to spring upsets in Utah.

Coach: McGregor ‘Must Be Dominant’ vs. Diaz in ‘Game-Changer’ Bout at UFC 202

Conor McGregor coach John Kavanagh believes his star pupil has learned from his loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 196 and will put those lessons to good use in their rematch on Aug. 20. According to the SBG Ireland boss, the preparation for UFC 202 has followed a different formula than previous camps. “The word we’ve been focusing on for this camp is ‘routine’. We basically did the same thing every day since we arrived in Vegas: Leave the house to go to the gym for a skill session at 1 p.m., before working on cardio in the evenings,” Kavanagh wrote in a blog on . “We’ve been following that pattern now for what feels like a long time — about 19 weeks in total come fight night. Although it seems like it has been a long process, we’re definitely seeing the fruits of our labor. There are certain fitness tests that we have numbers on, and the improvements from when Conor began to where he is now have been dramatic. “There’s no comparing this training camp to any we have done previously. I can’t stress enough how different this has been.

The Bottom Line: Bring on the High Elevation

With 20 seconds left in the second round of his bout at UFC Fight Night “Rodriguez vs. Caceres” on Saturday in Salt Lake City, an exhausted Chase Sherman bent over and stuck out his tongue. After having some success early in his fight with Justin Ledet , Sherman hit a wall. His offensive output slowed to a crawl, and his lack of movement made him an easy target. As a result, Ledet began picking him apart with boxing, and there was nothing Sherman could do about it. He lacked the energy to respond with consistent offense of his own, so he defiantly stuck out his tongue. It was Sherman’s way of making clear to Ledet: I may be too tired to answer back, but you haven’t taken my spirit. UFC Fight Night 92, much like previous outings in Mexico City and Denver, was defined in significant measure by the altitude. Fighters slowed quicker than usual, and longer fights inevitably turned into wars of attrition. The most famous example of the effects of altitude was the UFC 188 heavyweight title fight in Mexico City between Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum .

Anastasia Yankova vs. Veta Arteaga Added to Bellator 161

California-based Bellator MMA announced Thursday that a women's flyweight bout between Anastasia Yankova and Veta Arteaga has been added to Bellator 161 . The event goes down Sept. 16 at the HEB Center in Cedar Park, Texas. The matchup bolsters a main card that features a heavyweight main event pitting Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Cheick Kongo against Tony Johnson . Yankova was impressive earlier this year in her Bellator debut when she scored a first-round armbar at Bellator 152. She takes on a streaking Arteaga, who has won two consecutive battles. Chi Lewis-Parry to Fight Xavier Vigney at Glory 33 in New Jersey

The Glory 33 card, which is slated for Sep. 9 in New Jersey, has just been bolstered by an intriguing heavyweight showdown. Chi Lewis-Parry (7-1, 3 KOs) will clash with Xavier Vigney (10-1, 8 KOs) and serve as the co-headlining bout of the Glory 33 SuperFight Series undercard. Vigney took out Lewis-Parry in San Diego last May in the final round of the one-night four-man Heavyweight Qualification Tournament. “Chopper” would like nothing more than to exact revenge on “X-Man” and he’ll get his chance next month. Also announced for the Glory 33 SuperFight Series undercard is a welterweight skirmish between Francois Ambang and Daniel Morales in a rematch; “Bang Bang” won their first encounter. A 140-pound showdown between Rami Ibrahim and David Moore was also revealed. The Glory 33 SuperFight Series undercard will be anchored by the middleweight championship where Simon Marcus (44-2-2, 24 KOs) will defend his crown against Jason Wilnis (28-6-1, 7 KOs). Zoila Frausto will oppose Daniela Graf in a Super Bantamweight Grand Prix quarterfinal duel as well.

Sultan Aliev Injured, Bounced from UFC 202

It looks like Sultan Aliev will not be fighting on the massive UFC 202 card later this month. According to a report from MMAJunkie, a wrist injury has derailed the Russian middleweight and Aliev has been removed from the event, leaving Hyun Gyu Lim currently without an opponent. Aliev was hoping to bounce back from a dreadful Ultimate Fighting Championship debut in January where Kenny Robertson knocked him out in the first. “The Ace” was looking to get back on track as well as Lim fell short in in his most recent Octagonal appearance. The South Korean was stopped by Neil Magny at UFC Fight Night 66 and has lost two of his last three. The mega event goes down Aug. 20 in Las Vegas in the new T-Mobile Arena, the site of the blockbuster UFC 200 card. The grudge rematch between reigning featherweight champion Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz will anchor the festivities, though they will meet in a non-title bout at welterweight. Fan favorite Donald Cerrone will lock horns with Rick Story and Anthony “Rumble” Johnson will oppose Glover Teixeira in a pivotal light heavyweight affair.

36’s WMMA Pound-for-Pound Top 10

At 115 pounds, unbeaten fighters are staying unbeaten. At 135 pounds, no one can hang onto the Ultimate Fighting Championship title. In either case, we've got significant movement on the women's pound-for-pound list. At UFC 201 in Atlanta, Karolina Kowalkiewicz seized the moment, co-headlining a pay-per-view in just her third UFC appearance in a de facto title eliminator against the offensively gifted Rose Namajunas . Kowalkiewicz took the clinch to exploit Namajunas, earning a well-deserved split decision victory and solidifying herself as the next challenger for fellow unbeaten Polish 115-pounder Joanna Jedrzejczyk in a bout that would be both a historic strawweight clash, as well as a new pinnacle for Polish mixed martial arts. With her biggest win to date, Kowalkiewicz rises in these rankings from 10th to fifth. Of course, Kowalkiewicz's rapid rise through these pound-for-pound rankings wouldn't have been possible without the events that transpired one week earlier in Chicago, where underdog Valentina Shevchenko outclassed former UFC women's bantamweight champ Holly Holm for the final four rounds to earn the biggest win of her own career, leap forward in UFC 135-pound contendership and take the seventh spot on our list.

The Savage Truth: Association of Boxing Commissions’ High Drama

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. *** Tuesday's session at the Association of Boxing Commissions’ annual convention was surreal at best and chaotic at worst. A committee of regulators, fighters and referees put in hours and hours of work to come up with a list of modifications to the Unified Rules of MMA and those proposals were whittled down to a smaller set of changes by the medical advisory committee, comprised of some of the top ringside physicians in the country. These changes were set to be voted on Tuesday in Las Vegas. It seemed like a simple task but if I’ve learned anything over the last seven years I’ve been attending the ABC's annual conference, it's that whenever you get a bunch of regulators in one room, be prepared for the unexpected. When the voting members were asked if they were ready to call for a motion, California's Executive Officer Andy Foster asked for a 10-minute recess.

SWOLE! Conor McGregor Looks MASSIVE Ahead Of Nate Diaz Rematch

Conor McGregor feels confident going to the ground with Nate Diaz at UFC 202 |

“I don’t think the difference between us in that fight was the jiu-jitsu; I think it was the durability, the endurance, the experience,” McGregor said on a recent UFC 202 media conference call. “I think that was the difference. When we were both fresh, I ended up in the mat and caught that kick and he did that takedown he does, and I swept him. “I am confident on the mat with Nate. After that, I’ve brought in heavier people, more experienced jiu-jitsu people, to come in and push me daily. I will be experienced for his jiu-jitsu in the later rounds, also.” “People can say what the (expletive) they want,” McGregor said. “I didn’t feel his weight anywhere until that moment, until when he sprawled. When I went to turn away from mount and regain guard or something, he sprawled me out at the right time and that was it. It was done at that stage, but (expletive) it.
