Joe Rogan Excited That He's Going to be Protested by Westboro Baptist Church | MMAWeekly.com

(Editorial Opinion is that of Ken Pishna and does not reflect the views and principals of MMAWeekly.com or its staff.) Many people freak out when they find out they are going to be protested, but not UFC broadcaster and professional comedian Joe Rogan. He actually welcomes a protest. Of course, he is on a much higher intellectual plane than most of the protesters that are coming out from under a rock to picket his comedy show at the Starlight Theatre on Friday in Kansas City. I don't say that lightly, as Westboro Baptist Church (using the term Church in their name is really an affront to most other religious organizations) uses the URL GodHatesFags.com for its website. Westboro is known for picketing events and even funerals, issuing hate speech toward a wide array of groups from the LGBT+ community, various ethnic and religious groups, U.S. troops and politicians, and more. Regardless of your personal views on these various groups, there are more productive ways to advance the

Sherdog.com’s Pound-for-Pound Top 10

Demetrious Johnson sat on the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s flyweight throne for 2,142 days -- a historic reign that covered a record 11 title defenses against 10 different opponents and cast him as one of the sport’s pound-for-pound power players. None of it mattered to Henry Cejudo . A little more than two years after being soundly defeated by “Mighty Mouse,” Cejudo made the most of his opportunity in their rematch. The 2008 Olympic gold medalist captured the undisputed flyweight championship with a split decision over Johnson in the UFC 227 co-headliner on Aug. 4 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, mere miles from where he was born. Cejudo counteracted Johnson’s advantages in the standup department -- he was outstruck 121-80 in total strikes and 81-51 in significant strikes -- with takedowns and top control in the second, fourth and fifth rounds, where he bottled up “Mighty Mouse” and kept his prodigious offensive skills at bay. The loss snapped Johnson’s 13-fight winning streak and pushed him from second to eighth in the latest Sherdog pound-for-pound rankings.

'The Ultimate Fighter' Season 1 Cast Assembles for 14-Year Reunion

#TUF Season 1, then and now 14 years later. Crazy. What a journey! @UFC @DanaWhite pic.twitter.com/BbXolbAydL — Mike Swick (@officialswick) August 9, 2018 The cast of “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 1 may have mostly retired or moved on from MMA, but the majority of cast members assembled for a 14-year reunion this week, and took a photograph to celebrate the occasion. The majority of the cast, including coaches Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture and contestants such as Mike Swick , Chris Leben and Diego Sanchez attended the reunion, while castmates Bobby Southworth , Jason Thacker and Josh Koscheck were not able to make it. The attendees recreated a memorable group photo, 14 years removed from a pivotal moment in Ultimate Fighting Championship and mixed martial arts history. Nearly a decade and a half later, Sanchez still competes in the promotion, while Koscheck signed with Bellator MMA after a losing streak forced him out of the UFC. Leben retired from competition only to re-emerge recently as he prepares for a bare-knuckle boxing bout against fellow former UFC veteran Phil Baroni .

UFC Interim Welterweight Champ Colby Covington Breaks Silence After UFC 228 Snub

Current Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight interim champion Colby Covington has been uncharacteristically quiet since the UFC announced that he would not be fighting champion Tyron Woodley next month at UFC 228, and that Woodley would instead be fighting Liverpool’s Darren Till . “Chaos” was originally offered the fight to unify the belts but told the UFC that he was unavailable to fight in September due to the fact he had just undergone nasal surgery. While the decision to deny Covington first crack at the champion may seem harsh, the UFC chose not to hold up the division any longer, with Woodley’s last fight coming over a year ago in July last year against Demian Maia . Covington told MMAJunkie.com that he felt that the UFC were rushing him to accept the fight rather than promoting it to drive interest given the pair’s history. “Why are they trying to rush a camp?” Covington said. “This fight needs a build-up, man. It needs a 12-week promotional build-up. Let me get out there and show that I can promote, and I can market fights and sell fights.

Douglas Lima and the Unshakable Thought of One More Kick

Bellator MMA plans to stage a welterweight grand prix , starting at Bellator 206 on Sept. 29. Excitement surrounds the tournament for fans, observers and the participants, including former welterweight titleholder Douglas Lima . However, his enthusiasm is tinged with regret, as he feels he should be entering the draw as the defending champion, not as one of nine other contenders. Lima’s unanimous decision loss to Rory MacDonald on Jan. 20 still haunts him. “One more kick was all I needed,” he told Sherdog.com, “because the man could barely walk.” Lima peppered the Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran’s left leg with vicious low kicks throughout the first four rounds of the fight. The impacts raised a gruesome hematoma on MacDonald’s shin and left him with a leg that was too weak to stand on. Lima sensed the proverbial blood in the water and admits overzealousness got the best of him. “I think I was too hungry for the finish that I rushed in [and] I pretty much gave him the takedown,” he said. “I knew I had him.

Kevin Hart, Tony Robbins Among New Professional Fighters League Investors

Mark Burnett, Kevin Hart, Tony Robbins Invest in MMA Startup Professional Fighters League https://t.co/gYvSfLxtKM — Variety (@Variety) August 8, 2018 The Professional Fighters League ’s pockets just got a lot deeper after several high profile investors, including the likes of comedian Kevin Hart and life coach Tony Robbins, announced a $28 million investment in the playoffs-based mixed martial arts outfit. PFL, which changed its name from World Series of Fighting last year, has differentiated itself from the likes of Bellator MMA and the Ultimate Fighting Championship by holding point-based regular seasons with a $1 million grand prize for each divisional finalist. The league has a television deal with NBC Sports and has steadily gained the attention of more casual MMA fans over the last few months. With that added attention comes more willing investors; Hart and Robbins are joined by fellow PFL investors Mark Burnett, Chairman of Worldwide Television Group MGM, Ted Leonsis, majority owner of NHL 2018 Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals and NBA Washington Wizards, among others.

While you might pile up some good striking numbers in the first round, you could still get dominated in the next two and might not always show up in the stats at the end.

Infographic: Professional Fighters League Season 1 Lightweight Playoff Standings Update

As the Professional Fighters League regular season progresses, several storylines are emerging, but one of the most surprising and notable must be: This Natan Schulte guy is a bit of a problem. The relatively unheralded Brazilian made his presence known by upsetting Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Chris Wade , one of the early favorites, in June. He followed that up, and completed his run to the top of the standings, by choking Jason High out cold at PFL 5 last Thursday. Incidentally, Wade features in another major storyline of the season so far, as he is one of the most prominent examples of PFL’s weighted standings at work. While Wade is 1-1 on the season, he is tied for second with two 2-0 fighters, thanks to PFL’s points system which gives greater weight to stoppage victories; the earlier the better. According to this system, designed to incentivize exciting fights as well as offer fighters greater latitude to make up standings deficits, fighters receive: • zero points for a loss • one point for a draw • three points for a decision victory • four points for a third-round stoppage, five points for a second-round stoppage and six points for a first-round stoppage The PFL regular season continues through August, with the playoffs scheduled to begin in October.

Still, how many other big-money fighters are there in the UFC? How many of them are within a few pounds of GSP in either direction? Report: Kajan Johnson Makes Quick Turnaround Against Rustam Khabilov at UFC Moscow

Rustam Khabilov vs Kajan Johnson Rebooked For UFC Moscow - https://t.co/WvXDdrx2gr pic.twitter.com/Hdiq997lmu — MMASucka (@MMASucka) August 8, 2018 Kajan Johnson will be making a quick turnaround as he prepares to take on Rustam Khabilov at UFC Moscow in September after submitting to an armbar by Islam Makhachev on July 28, according to a report by MMASucka . Johnson (23-13-1) was originally scheduled to fight Khabilov back in March, but an injury forced the Dagestani out of the bout at the last minute. Johnson went on to defeat Stevie Ray instead, who filled in on short notice. Prior to the submission loss to Makhachev, “Ragin’” Kajan was on an impressive four-fight winning streak, punctuated by a massive knockout victory over Adriano Martins last year. Meanwhile, Khabilov (22-3) has won five fights in a row himself, but hasn’t fought since September 2017, making the fight with Johnson almost a year to the day since his last fight. UFC Moscow will take place on Sept. 15 and will be the promotion’s first event on Russian soil. The card will be headlined by a heavyweight clash between Mark Hunt and Aleksei Oleinik.

Gordon (3-1) succumbed to punches 17 seconds into Round 1. Hardy (2-0) showed no regard for his adversary’s skills. He marched across the Octagon and let his hands go. Gordon did what he could to answer back, but the difference in speed, power and athleticism between the two heavyweights was massive. Hardy connected with a right hand as he flurried, dropped the North Carolinian and closed it out. The 30-year-old Hardy will remain on a developmental deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship . Bas Rutten Thinks Conor McGregor Has a Puncher's Chance Against Khabib Nurmagomedov | MMAWeekly.com

“Now, I don’t know what Conor’s been doing in the meanwhile, but still, if you fight a guy whose father is one of the most famous trainers that’s out there and who started probably when he was three years old wrestling, you can’t learn that in a year, even if you train every day. Yeah, you can stop some takedowns, but once the fight is there and punches have been thrown and little movement and little feints, it’s very hard to stop a takedown. So for Conor to take this fight, for me, I think he has a puncher’s chance. Now, the good thing for Conor is the he has incredible timing and incredible accuracy. So, if he can land a punch, although Khabib has never been knocked out, but still, he’s never been hit by McGregor. McGregor can hit really hard as we know, because everybody he hits he destroys.
