The 2016 MMA National Olympic Teams: Poland

With the 2016 Summer Olympics scheduled for Aug. 5-21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, staff and contributors sat down to put together hypothetical MMA Olympic teams for the following countries: United States, Canada, Japan, Great Britain, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, Sweden, Poland and Australia. This 10-part series will map out the yellow brick road to Rio de Janeiro for the men and women who call the cage home, Zika virus be damned. *** Nestled in Central Europe and home to roughly 40 million people, Poland has produced its share of Olympic athletes. None have shined brighter than track and field star Irena Szewinska. Szewinska remains the most decorated Polish Olympian in history, with a total of seven medals on her mantle. She reached the podium in four consecutive Olympics, starting in 1964 and ending in 1976. During that remarkable 12-year run, Szewinska struck gold on three occasions: in the 4x100m relay at the 1964 Summer Games in Tokyo, in the 200m at the 1968 Summer Games in Mexico City and in the 400m at the 1976 Summer Games in Montreal.

John Lineker vs. John Dodson to Headline UFC Fight Night in Portland on Oct. 1

A bantamweight bout with title implications will headline the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Oct. 1 trip to Portland. Promotion officials announced Saturday that John Lineker will meet John Dodson in the UFC Fight Night 96 main event at the Moda Center. The Fox Sports 1-televised card will also include Will Brooks ’ sophomore Octagon appearance, as he takes on Brazilian Alex Oliveira in a lightweight tilt. Lineker enters the matchup on a five-fight winning streak, including three impressive triumphs since moving from flyweight to 135 pounds. Most recently, the Brazilian known as “Hands of Stone” knocked out former No. 1 contender Michael McDonald in the first round at UFC Fight Night in Sioux Falls, S.D., on July 13. A two-time title challenger at 125 pounds, Dodson returned to bantamweight for the first time since “The Ultimate Fighter 14” in April, when he stopped Manny Gamburyan in 47 seconds at UFC on Fox 19. The Jackson-Wink MMA product ‘s only two losses in nine Octagon appearances have come at the hands of reigning flyweight king Demetrious Johnson .

After Lengthy Hiatus, UFC Middleweight Tim Kennedy Says He Has a Fight Booked

I have been training, I knew I had a fight coming up,” Kennedy said in a video on his Facebook page. “And now I’m telling you -- I have a fight. “ Kennedy is currently in the process of finishing up filming for Season 2 of ”Hunting Hitler,” a reality show in which a team investigates the death of Nazi leader Adolph Hitler. The Army Ranger and Special Forces sniper hints that the upcoming bout would put him right at the top of the 185-pound division. “After this fight, you can’t say that I shouldn’t be the champion,” he said. “The details of that have to wait for the UFC to tell you when, where and who. But I’m telling you, I’m fighting.” The 36-year-old Kennedy hasn’t competed since a controversial third-round technical knockout loss to Yoel Romero at UFC 178 on Sept.

MMA’s Greats of the States | Mississippi: Jason Knight

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it.

Opinion: Eddie Alvarez and His Latest Business Plan

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. *** If you read this column on a week-to-week basis, you're hip to the fact that I consider mixed martial arts, charmingly so, freakish and strange. Many of this sport's biggest names and drawing cards, the Conor McGregor and even a retired Chael Sonnen for instance, have embraced this concept and promoted themselves in such sensationalist ways. On the other hand, they keep up kayfabe and never truly, fully explicate that MMA on the greatest level is really just bread and circuses. Imagine my thrill this week, when UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez called a spade a spade. This week in an interview with's Brett Okamoto , the newly-minted 155-pound king was adamant that he didn't so much care who the UFC considered his potential first challenger, so much as he was interested in the Aug. 20 outcome of the Nate Diaz - Conor McGregor rematch at UFC 202.

Multiple Changes Announced for UFC Fight Night in Brasilia on Sept. 24

Several bouts at UFC Fight Night “Cyborg vs. Lansberg” have undergone changes due to injuries, the promotion’s Brazilian branch announced Friday. Erick Silva will now lock horns with Luan Chagas in a welterweight bout. Silva was originally slated to face Brandon Thatch , who pulled out of the contest with a hand injury. Chagas’ opponent, Shinsho Anzai , suffered a back injury and had to withdraw as well. Meanwhile, Godofredo Castro will step in and face Mike de la Torre in a bantamweight tilt after Renato Carneiro suffered an undisclosed ailment during training. Finally, Joaquim Silva has been forced out of a lightweight matchup with Gregor Gillespie due to a knee injury. He will be replaced by Glaico Franca in the contest. UFC Fight Night takes place at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in Brasilia, Brazil, on Sept. 24 and is headlined by a 140-pound catch-weight bout pitting Cristiane Justino against Lina Lansberg . In the co-main event, Renan Barao meets Phillipe Nover at 145 pounds.

Opinion: UFC Cannot Afford Another Conor McGregor Loss

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. *** I’ll admit it: The title of this column has a bit of hyperbole involved. The Ultimate Fighting Championship can definitely afford to see Conor McGregor lose at UFC 202 . It’s not like the ship will sink if McGregor loses his second fight in a row against Nate Diaz on Aug. 20. The sport has survived far worse. McGregor remains the last superstar standing at this point, with the world’s largest MMA promotion having recently sold for a whopping $4 billion. Whether the UFC wants to admit it or not, the sport is about the stars, not the fights. The fights are what the hardcore fans come for, and the stars are what draw in outsiders. They are the reason the UFC had so much value over the past year, and the short lifespan of stars in the UFC is the reason why the Fertitta brothers were compelled to sell in the first place. This has been a tough year for the organization’s biggest stars.

Titan FC 41 Anchored by Damm vs. Faria for Inaugural Women’s Bantamweight Title

Titan Fighting Championship will return to the Bank United Center in Coral Gables, Fla., for the third consecutive time on Sept. 9, when Carina Damm and Kalindra Faria vie for the promotion’s inaugural women’s bantamweight crown at Titan FC 41 . Damm punched her ticket to the title fight by toppling Sarah Alpar at Titan FC 39 in June. Faria, meanwhile, has won two in a row, with her last conquest coming in December against Tamires Souza on a Battle of Kings card. The co-featured bout will see Andrew Whitney take on Farkhad Sharipov to determine the Titan FC bantamweight champion. Their bout will serve as the finals of the promotion’s 135-pound tournament. “Titan FC is in the midst of an incredibly exciting time,” COO Lex McMahon stated. “We have firmly established South Florida as our home and mecca of MMA. We look forward to building on that momentum and energy by delivering the best card to date which will feature an amazing WMMA bantamweight title fight as well as the mens bantamweight tournament finals and title bout.

Conor McGregor Reacts To Dana White Saying He’ll Return to 145 Win Or Lose

Conor McGregor stepped into the octagon at “UFC 194” with gold already slung over his shoulder. However, just the interim champion at the time, he successfully challenged Jose Aldo for his featherweight title to become the undisputed champion. It was been over eight months since he won the championship, and he has yet to return to the featherweight division a single time. Instead, he threw down at welterweight with Nate Diaz for his next contest and will once again return to 170 at “UFC 202”.

Ken Shamrock Has License Revoked, Fined $2,500 for Failed Drug Test at Bellator 149

Ken Shamrock had his license revoked and was fined $2,500 by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation for failing a drug test at Bellator 149. first reported news on Friday. Shamrock tested positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone and his testosterone/epitestosterone level was three times the allowed limit at 12:1 following a first-round stoppage loss to Royce Gracie on Feb. 19 in Houston. Additionally, “The World’s Most Dangerous Man” tested positive for the opoid methadone. Shamrock appealed the initial findings and claimed that the positive test was a result of medication used to treat a pituitary condition. The 52-year-old fighter dropped the appeal on July 27. Shamrock is eligible to re-apply for a license on March 4, 2017; the ban is likely to be upheld by athletic commissions in other states, as well. Shamrock has appealed the loss to Gracie on the grounds that an illegal knee to the groin allowed his opponent to finish the fight. There has been no official word on the status of that appeal.

Gerges-Inocente, Featherweight Tourney Added to Glory 33

Glory, the world’s premiere kickboxing promotion, announced Thursday that a heavyweight duel between Hesdy Gerges and Guto Inocente will serve as the co-feature bout at Glory33 “New Jersey.” The event will go down on Sep. 9 at Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, N.J. and will be anchored by the Glory heavyweight championship bout between reigning titleholder Rico Verhoeven and Anderson “Braddock” Silva. Gerges (49-16-1, 23 KOs) is currently ranked No. 5 in Glory’s heavyweight division. “Fighterheart” captured the It’s Showtime heavyweight crown in 2010 when opponent Badr Hari was disqualified but lost his belt two years later when he was knocked out by Daniel Ghita. The Egyptian has become a fan favorite over the years and has come close to winning a few other world titles and has taken on the likes of Semmy Schilt (twice), Verhoeven (twice), Errol Zimmerman and Carter Williams, among others. He is coming off a split decision loss to Ismael Londt at Glory 31 in June. Inocente, meanwhile, has captured several gold medals in kickboxing tournaments across his native Brazil. The UFC and Strikeforce veteran is 2-0 in the Glory ring, with his last triumph coming at Glory 30 in May when he edged Brian Douwes over three rounds.

Middleweights Thiago Santos, Eric Spicely to Clash at UFC Fight Night in Brasilia

Thiago Santos will lock horns with Eric Spicely at UFC Fight Night in Brasilia, Brazil, on Sept. 24. Promotion officials recently announced the middleweight pairing. UFC Fight Night takes place at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium and is headlined by a 140-pound catch-weight clash pitting Cristiane Justino against Lina Lansberg . Santos, 32, saw a four-fight winning streak snapped at UFC 200, where he suffered a first-round technical knockout loss to Gegard Mousasi . “Marreta” owns notable Octagon triumphs over Nate Marquardt and Elias Theodorou and is 5-3 within the Las Vegas-based promotion overall. Spicely tasted defeat for the first time in nine pro outings in his Octagon debut, as he was submitted by Sam Alvey in the first round at UFC Fight Night “McDonald vs. Lineker” on July 13. “The Ultimate Fighter 23” cast member began his career with eight straight triumphs under the CES MMA banner.

Dana White: Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson gets next shot at Tyron Woodley

White explained his reasoning when talking about the upcoming fight between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz at UFC 202. White says that after that rematch is done, McGregor is expected to go back to featherweight and Diaz's older brother Nick will just have to get in line when it comes to a welterweight title shot.

Dana White: ‘Wonderboy’ Next for Tyron Woodley; McGregor Will Defend 145-Pound Title

UFC President Dana White has some specific thoughts on the futures of featherweight king Conor McGregor and welterweight champion Tyron Woodley , and it might not be exactly what either man had planned. “I fully expect Conor to come back and defend his 145-pound title,” White told . “I think that Nate [Diaz] feels his brother [ Nick Diaz ] should have the fight at 170, but Nick is not going to come back and fight for the title right away. “There are other guys deserving of a title shot. Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson is going to fight for the 170-pound title and then we’ll see what happens with Nick and Nate.” McGregor and Diaz will square off at 170 pounds in the UFC 202 headliner on Aug. 20. Thus far, McGregor has balked at outlining any plans beyond that bout, and that includes discussing a rematch with current interim 145-pound Jose Aldo to unify the featherweight belt. “I haven’t really spoke about it to anyone about what’s next. Who knows what’s next?” McGregor said during a recent conference call.

Andre Soukhamthath Knee Strike Short Circuits Kin Moy in CES MMA 37 Main Event

The CES MMA bantamweight championship still belongs to Andre Soukhamthath . Soukhamthath wiped out Kin Moy with a second-round knee strike and follow-up hammerfists to retain the 135-pound title in the CES MMA 37 “Summer Gold” headliner on Friday at the Twin Rivers Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island. Moy (8-3) met his end 2:32 into round two, as he was unable to recapture the magic that led him to a January 2014 victory over “The Asian Sensation.” It remained competitive until the champion connected with decisive shot. Moy attacked the body, struck well in combination and integrated his punches and kicks throughout a closely contested first round. In the second, however, Soukhamthath (11-3) found the opening he needed. He snatched a double collar tie as Moy moved toward him and delivered a knee up the middle that folded the challenger where he stood. Soukhamthath then pounced with hammerfists to seal the deal. In the co-main event, Bellator MMA veteran Matt Bessette submitted Joe Pingitore with a second-round heel hook to claim the vacant CES MMA featherweight crown.

Julianna Pena Skeptical of Ronda Rousey UFC Return: ‘She’s Broken a Little Bit’

UFC bantamweight contender Julianna Pena believes that she has done enough to earn a shot at reigning champion Amanda Nunes , but she also realizes her place in the pecking order depends on the return of a certain Olympic judoka. “I think [Nunes] just wants to have the money fight. Why defend your title when you can just wait around for whenever Ronda [Rousey] is ready to quit teasing everyone,” Pena told TMZ Sports . “So I think that’s her game plan.” Pena has won four fights to begin her promotional tenure, including a unanimous verdict over former title challenger Cat Zingano at UFC 200 on July 9. That same night, Nunes captured 135-pound gold with a first-round stoppage of Miesha Tate . “They can delay me, but they can’t deny me. I’ve had my hand [raised] in the Octagon more than any other female out there and no one deserves this title shot more than I do,” Pena said. That’s how I feel about that. She knows that she needs to fight me. All these girls know that they need to fight me. And I want my belt, so I’m not going to stop until I get it.” Rousey has maintained a low profile since her second-round knockout loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193 last November.

Scott Coker: Bellator MMA Working to Upgrade Undercard Quality to Boost Digital Presence

While in the past years Bellator MMA preliminary cards have been merely an afterthought, often heavily populated with local fighters to help better sell tickets, the California-based promotion is working to beef up its digital presence. That will be especially evident at Aug. 26, as the Bellator 160 prelims are as attractive a lineup as any the promotion has offered. The portion of the card will be topped by a featherweight rematch between Georgi Karakhanyan and Bubba Jenkins . Also included in the early offerings will be a trio of intriguing promotional debuts: Kevin Ferguson Jr. , the son of the late Kimbo Slice ; Joey Davis , a four-time NCAA Division II national champion with a 131-0 career mark; and Chinzo Machida , the older brother of ex-UFC champion Lyoto Machida . “As everyone knows, in today’s world it’s important to have a strong digital presence and do everything possible to draw attention and really drive traffic to," Bellator President Scott Coker said. "With our athletes being the focal point of our business model, there is no better way to do just that, than to put the highest quality fights not only on Spike, but also during our Bellator.

Four-Time NCAA All-American Gregor Gillespie to Make UFC Debut on Sept. 24

Four-time NCAA All-American wrestler Gregor Gillespie will make his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut opposite Glaico Franca at UFC Fight Night “Cyborg vs. Lansberg” on Sept. 24 at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in Brasilia, Brazil. Franca replaced Joaquim Silva , who withdrew from the event due to injury. Gillespie will enter the UFC with an amateur wrestling pedigree few can match, as he won a national championship at Edinboro University in 2007. “The Gift” still ranks first on Edinboro’s all-time list in career wins (152) and winning percentage (.917), and he remains one of only two wrestlers -- Josh Koscheck is the other -- in school history to earn All-America honors four times. Those skills have made for a seamless transition to MMA. Gillespie has raced out to a perfect 7-0 record, capturing Ring of Combat gold in the process. He last competed at Ring of Combat 55 on June 3, when he was awarded a three-round split decision over Sidney Outlaw . Franca, 25, has rattled off 10 wins in his past 12 appearances. The Astra Fight Team representative last competed at UFC 197 in April, when he dropped a unanimous decision to James Vick at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Flores Edges Kielczewski in PBC on ESPN Main Event

ICYMI: @El_Michoacano2 remains undefeated following his UD win over @polish_prince89 last night on #PBConESPN. — PBC (@premierboxing) August 13, 2016 Rising contender Miguel Flores was expected to have a tough time against Ryan Kielczewski on Friday night, and that ended up being true as the unbeaten Flores had to dig deep in order to win a 10-round decision. The matchup headlined the latest edition of Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN and Flores was just a step quicker than Kielczewski and landed the cleaner overall punches. The crowd inside the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y. was electrified as the two featherweights tore into each other in spurts, creating great pockets of action throughout. Kielczewski never backed down from the heavily favored Flores (25-2, 7 KOs) and forced him to fight when he didn’t want to. Overall, though, Flores (21-0, 9 KOs) was the better man and was awarded a unanimous decision via tallies of 97-93 and 96-94 (twice). In the televised co-feature, 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Yordenis Ugas (16-3, 7 KOs) dominated previously-unbeaten Jamal James over 10 rounds.

With Ben Rothwell having been removed from the pay-per-view event due to an injury, Browne has opted to step in on late notice to try and exact revenge on “Vai Cavalo.” first reported the news; UFC officials have not yet officially announced the move. Browne is coming off a first-round TKO loss at the hands of former champ Cain Velasquez at UFC 200. Before that, “Hapa” had flip-flopped between wins and losses, having gone 2-2 in his last four before facing Velasquez. Werdum, meanwhile, is coming off a knockout loss to Stipe Miocic at UFC 198 this past May. UFC 203 will be headlined by reigning heavyweight champion Miocic defending his title for the first time against former K-1 World Grand Prix champion Alistair Overeem . UFC 203 will take place inside Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio and will be televised live on UFC Fight Pass, Fox Sports 1 and pay-per-view.
