Cowboy and The King to Meet in Vegas
The hardest working man in the mixed martial arts business, lightweight contender Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone, has his fourth fight of 2014 set, as he has verbally agreed to face off with fellow 155-pound standout Bobby "King" Green in the co-main event of UFC 178 in Las Vegas on September 27. Green's original opponent for the MGM Grand Garden Arena card, Jorge Masvidal , will now face James Krause on the same card. "Just got the call," Cerrone tweeted Thursday evening. "Here we go. I love this feeling, I was always the kid waiting for the school bell to ring. 3:30 / Park / after school." Currently on a four-fight winning streak, Colorado's Cerrone is on the hottest run of his career, as he's finished each of his opponents while picking up one Knockout of the Night, one Submission of the Night, and two Performance of the Night bonuses. In his most recent bout, he knocked out Jim Miller at UFC Fight Night in Atlantic City on July 16. Fontana, California's Green is on a pretty impressive run in his own right, as he's won eight straight bouts, including four in the UFC. Last month, the former Strikeforce contender won a hard-fought three-round decision over Josh Thomson to improve to 23-5 and set up what promises to be a fight that could steal the show at UFC 178.
Video: UFC champ Jon Jones says knee surgery was a success
Jon Jones (20-1 MMA, 14-1 UFC) went under the knife for the first time in his career on Thursday, and from all indications, it was a success.
Starting with Cage Warriors 70, which takes place Saturday in Dublin, any fighter on the promotion’s cards who ends a fight with one of 10 of what it has deemed to be the rarest of finishes will earn a $2,000 bonus.
UFC Fight Night: Bader vs. St. Preux - Tim Boetsch vs. Brad Tavares Preview and Prognostication
The real problem for Boetsch is not even Tavares so much, as it is the fact of senescence. There will be times where his mind is willing, but not his body. I kind of got that impression against Dolloway. I've always found CB pretty underrated, or at least good enough to distract from the usual flack he gets as a fratboy redneck Matt Damon. But Tim has always fought like a young man, and that kind of style wears on your quick.
If you watch me roll I do what I call “keepitplayful.” I might work for the dominant position but as soon or before it is established I allow myself to get into an inferior position. I also allow my training partner to go for a submission and depending on how I feel I either attempt to defend the submission early, at the half way point or late. I risk being stuck in an inferior position or getting tapped out. I’m okay with this because the information that I collect from experiencing jiu-jitsu this way is different. Due to the KeepItPlayful approach I am less concerned with “winning” and instead looking to create / allow movement while observing my partners jiu-jitsu and therefore creating a greater understanding. If you allow yourself to spend time in all positions you build comfort in all positions, and if you do this, you win.

UFC 178 adds Donald Cerrone-Bobby Green, James Krause-Jorge Masvidal
Cerrone has been one of the hottest fighters in the lightweight division. He has four straight wins, and all have won $50,000 bonuses. After an upset loss to Rafael dos Anjos less than a year ago, “Cowboy” has a submission of Evan Dunham, a head kick knockout of Adriano Marins, a submission of Edson Barboza and a head kick KO of Jim Miller, the latter coming less than a month ago in UFC Fight Night 45’s main event.

Girl, 10, took punch that banned youth pankration’s boxing-wrestling mix, but all she wants is to fight again
Part two is the unedited version, which shows Pineda and Sanchez standing opposite each other and quickly engaging, trading a couple of strikes to the body before Sanchez lands his right cross. Pineda isn’t fazed by the blow to her face and immediately initiates a takedown, but the match is halted for the illegal strike. Pineda rubs her hand over her cheek before getting ready to restart the match. Sanchez is issued a warning for the illegal punch and a point is given to Pineda; strikes to the head are illegal in youth pankration.

Tim Boetsch: Saturday's Maine Man
Any married man will tell you that in nine out of 10 cases, his wife is right. It doesn’t matter if it’s about politics, music, religion, or sports, if the Mrs says it, you can usually take it to the bank. So when Tim Boetsch’s wife Jade gave her two cents on her husband’s 1-3 run in his last four fights, the middleweight listened, and what she told him was the equivalent of what Mickey told Rocky in Rocky III – he got civilized. “My wife has been telling me that for a long time,” Boetsch laughed. “She knows me best, and several times she told me that I’ve been thinking too much, and to be honest, she’s right. I’m a fighter, and in the Octagon I don’t need to be a thinking man; (Laughs) I just need to get in there and fight, and that’s when I’ve done my best, when I go with my instincts, fight hard, and look to take people out. And that’s something I need to embrace.” In other words, Boetsch has to once again be “The Barbarian,” the guy who threw David Heath around in his UFC debut in 2008, kicking off his Octagon career with a bang heard throughout the MMA world. And to help get that guy back, he decided that a switch from Matt Hume’s AMC Pankration team in Washington was in order, and with his fight this Saturday against Brad Tavares taking place in his home state of Maine, the timing was perfect to reconnect with his family, go to a place with spotty cell phone reception, and get down to what he calls some “Rocky training” with former UFC standout Marcus Davis.
UFC Fight Night 47's Ryan Bader believes he's finally ready for a shot at the belt
Bader first made his way to mixed martial arts’ largest promotion in 2008, earning a tournament title on “The Ultimate Fighter 8″ and securing a contract with the UFC. After winning five consecutive fights, Bader was considered one of the top prospects in the 205-pound division and was on the cusp of a title shot. However, he suffered a submission loss to Jon Jones, who in his next fight would claim the UFC belt, an honor he’s maintained ever since.

Koppenhaver now is in transit to the Ventura Country Sherrif’s Pretrial Detention Facility and should be booked Friday evening, according to VCSD media relations rep Don Aguilar. Koppenhaver can waive his right to extradition to Las Vegas, in which case the Las Vegas police department has 30 days to pick him up. If he declines, the Clark County (Nevada) district attorney’s office will seek a governor’s warrant to extradite him, which could take up to 90 days, according to Tess Driver, spokeswoman for the Clark County district attorney’s office.

How a tragic accident taught Jason Day the price of a dream
In the initial weeks after the accident, Jason Day was thought to be lucky. He implausibly limped away without a single broken bone, requiring only a cane to navigate the soft tissue damage in both of his knees and ankles. At the time he didn't think too much of it, and within two months he was back in the gym. But no matter how hard he tried, things weren't the same. He couldn't withstand any impact on his ankles. Kicking was a no-go and any side-to-side mobility drills were only trials in frustration.
Twitter Mailbag: It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt
That brings us back to a, the complete lack of anything resembling actual remorse. Sonnen said that the best thing for dopers to do is come clean and tell the truth. You know, after they’ve been caught. Multiple times, in his case. That’s not coming clean – that’s just giving up once you know your cause is officially hopeless. It might be easy to write off concerns over performance-enhancing drugs in baseball or track as an arbitrary moral panic, but this is professional fighting we’re talking about. Two guys are going to fight in a cage for money, trying their very best to hurt each other. They’ve both agreed that they won’t use these banned substances that might make them more effective at hurting at each other. Then one guy violates that agreement, becoming rich and famous in the process. Now that guy thinks we’re going to forgive and forget and remember him fondly in the end, just because he was honest about it once he realized he could no longer convincingly lie about it?
Welcome to the UFC, Sanchez and Holtzman
Holtzman tends to have very aggressive, come forward striking style. He mixes combinations to the body at times and strikes freely with kicks punches and knees on the way in. He can be flummoxed a bit by fighters with decent footwork and movement, and is less comfortable staying on the outside than he is moving in and out of phone booth range. Mostly, his time on the outside is spent looking for opportunities to blitz his opponent with a flurry of strikes on his way into the clinch and into a controlling position against the cage. In the clinch he tends to go for trips and foot sweeps over more wrestling oriented takedowns, and isn't always a particularly busy fighter inside. When he does get the fight to the ground, he's shown some decent, powerful ground and pound, but isn't really a dominant controlling force on top. He is only two years into his MMA career at this point, so he has a lot of time to round out his game.

Garry Cook promoted to UFC Chief Global Officer
Controversial former Manchester City soccer team CEO Garry Cook, who joined the UFC two years ago to head operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, is moving to Las Vegas to take over as the promotion's Chief Global Officer. This would make Cook one of the most powerful figures in the organization, as he would be in charge of all the international territories. Sources within the promotion confirmed the appointment earlier Thursday, as did Dana White via text message on Thursday night. "(The) guy is a f***ig stud," said White, who made the same statement several times in recent months at European shows, when talking about how Cook was the right guy to build the brand in Europe. Cook had been running the company's U.K. office. Cook had lived in the U.S. in the 80s and 90s, including a stint at Nike, where he was the head of "Brand Jordan." Cook was CEO of Manchester City from 2008 to 2011, and started with UFC one year later. As part of the reorganization of the international division, Mark Fischer, who had been Executive Vice President and Managing Director for Asia for the past four years, has been released.

UFC Fight Night Bader vs Saint Preux Judo Chop: What Happened to Gray Maynard?
Worse, Maynard had almost completely shut down by this point in the fight. Despite Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan's assertions that Maynard had paced himself in round one (unlike in the last bout) and would come into round two a much fresher fighter, Maynard effectively gave away the second and third rounds. It seemed almost as if Maynard's confidence was undone by the fact that he absolutely could not finish the champion. This creeping suspicion was almost certainly underscored by Edgar's improved counter-striking and wrestling game. Like last time, Maynard failed repeatedly to use his credentialed wrestling skills, simply because he couldn't blend the phases of fighting as well as Edgar, while Edgar used the mere threat of his wrestling to outposition and outstrike the challenger.
Dana White: War Machine, Josh Grispi assault cases are 'horrifying'
“It’s crazy,” White told MMAjunkie on Friday following weigh-ins for Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 47 in Bangor, Maine. “What I can’t believe is that they haven’t caught him yet. They have all these bounty hunters looking for him, the police are looking for him, and nobody can find him. That’s pretty crazy. It’s horrible, man. Horrible.”
Miesha Tate is second UFC star sign
"It's an awesome feeling to be able to sign with KHI Management," Tate said. "I have been keeping my eye on them ever since they started working with Donald Cerrone in the UFC. They have all the capabilities I am looking for in an agency, and I really look forward to what the future will hold both inside and out of the Octagon."
Raphael Assuncao's twin brother wants to join him in the UFC
"My last fight was exactly one year after my knee surgery. I was still in pain," he continued. "I was cleared to train again in October, and I started a training camp in November to fight in January. My knee wasn’t 100 percent, I was still in pain, and I was afraid to get kicked in the knee, so the fight didn’t play out as I was expecting. But now I’m 100 percent and it’s going to be different."

Gustafsson’s Trainer: ‘We Are Not Happy’ with UFC Rescheduling Jones-Cormier
Ultimate Fighting Championship on Aug. 12 announced that light
heavyweight champion Jon Jones had
suffered an injury in training and would not defend his title
Cormier at UFC
178 . Instead, the match was rescheduled for UFC
182 on Jan. 3, leaving Cormier as the challenger and No. 1
Gustafsson out in the cold.
Gustafsson was Jones’ original UFC 178 opponent before an injury
forced him to withdraw and left the door open for Cormier. With
Gustafsson now fully healthy, the Swede’s trainer believes “The
Mauler” deserves the title shot that was belonged to him and thinks
Cormier should go back to waiting in line. Jones defeated
Gustafsson by unanimous decision at UFC 165 in September.
“We are not happy,” Andreas Michael told Sherdog.com. “Alex is the
number one contender; he got injured and [the] UFC went to Plan B.
Now if that fight is not happening, of course Alex and Jones should
be right back. That is the fight we want and the fans want.
Everyone wants that fight because the previous fight was one of the
best fights ever.
Overcoming addiction was harder battle than anything Lauren Murphy will face in the UFC
Murphy will meet Sara McMann in her UFC debut Saturday on the UFC Fight Night prelims on FOX Sports 2 (8 p.m. ET) from Bangor, Maine. For most, the prospect of taking on McMann, the former women's bantamweight No. 1 contender and Olympic wrestling silver medalist would be dreadful. Not for Murphy. She can't wait.

Report: UFC Restructures International Division, Names Garry Cook Chief Global Officer
There has been a shift in power at the top of the
Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s international division.
According to a report by
MMAFighting.com , Garry Cook, who was in charge of the
promotion’s operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, has
been named the UFC’s Chief Global Officer. Cook is expected to move
to Las Vegas after previously running the organization’s U.K.
Cook was hired by the UFC two years ago. Before venturing into MMA,
the British executive worked for Nike from 1996 to 2008, notably
heading up the “Brand Jordan” project – which allowed him to work
closely with former Chicago Bulls superstar Michael Jordan. Cook
also served as CEO for the soccer club Manchester City from 2008 to
According to a statement provided by the UFC, Cook will transition
into his new role over the next few months. He will continue to
oversee operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa until a
replacement is appointed. Cook will join the executive management
team and report to Senior Executive Vice President and Chief
Operating Officer, Lawrence Epstein.
UFC to introduce leg reach statistics for future events
“We know what arm reach is, we know what a sizable discrepancy is in arm reach. Jon Jones with his 84.5 versus, say, Dan Henderson with 76. That’s a huge difference. But what’s a huge difference in leg reach? I have no idea. It’s going to take a little while on the analytical side of things to figure out what’s a good length in proportion to what weight class you’re in and what’s a sizable discrepancy. A sizable discrepancy in leg reach might be much smaller than arm reach.”
Cathal Pendred makes charity donation after receiving King's bonus
It's really good to see money from an ugly side of the sport going to something better and it's a genuinely great thing for Pendred to do. Obviously there are a lot of fighters doing charity work, so Pendred's actions shouldn't set him apart as going above and beyond his peers. Rather, this is just a nice way to show fans, media, and even other fighters, that there are good things that can be done with even the most inglorious UFC moments. And that fighters can do more with the bad publicity of PED's in MMA than just speak out against it.

10 reasons to watch UFC Fight Night 47 from Dana White's old stomping grounds
After three weeks of sun, cervezas, and no UFC fights, you can dust off your cable box and tune in for UFC Fight Night 47. The event marks the first time the promotion has visited Maine. That’s not a particularly notable accomplishment for the old pinned map at Zuffa headquarters, but for UFC President Dana White – a local boy made good – it’s a little feather in the cap.
Dana White uncertain he would’ve managed to stop UFC 178 media day brawl: ‘Who the f— knows, I wasn’t there’
"As soon as Jones went up and their bodies touched, I would have separated them," White said. "Sometimes you'll see me put a hand in, or sometimes you'll see me do something else. I would have separated them. It was the head butt, Jones headbutted Cormier - that's what upset [Daniel] and made him push him back. I would have got my arm in there before that contact was even made. I would have seen the contact coming and I would have stopped it. Then I would have been right in the middle. Would I have stopped that whole thing from going down, who the f**k knows? I wasn't here."
