The UFC Bantamweight Title: A Lineal History Infographic

It is impossible to look at the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship men’s bantamweight title without an understanding and appreciation of Dominick Cruz ’s history of injuries; for the first six years of the division’s existence, Cruz was a recurring apparition, alternating between dominance and disappearance but always looming over the proceedings. With the possible exception of Cain Velasquez , no champion has missed more of the prime of his career with injuries than Cruz, and with all due respect to Velasquez, Cruz was the more dominant of the two. Until his loss to Cody Garbrandt at UFC 207, nobody had beaten a healthy Cruz in nearly a decade, and frankly, only T.J. Dillashaw had even come close. It’s fitting that Garbrandt and Dillashaw are Cruz’s main foils. As Renan Barao , once the most feared man in the division, has struggled on the scale as well as in the cage, they have established themselves as the division’s new breed. Unfortunately, the budding rivalry between the two, sparked by personal history, genuine dislike for each other and fan-friendly fighting styles, lost much of its steam at UFC 227, as Dillashaw scored a second definitive stoppage over “No Love.

Teammate says Conor McGregor will KO Khabib Nurmagomedov in first round

“The Notorious” returning to action against Nurmagomedov – who has never lost a round in UFC competition – is no easy task. However, Gallagher (7-0 MMA, 4-0 BMMA), a Bellator bantamweight who is one of McGregor’s teammates at SBG Ireland in Dublin, has visions of a quick victory for his training partner.

With Two Year USADA Suspension Nearly Up, The UFC Has Finally Released Tom Lawlor - MMA Imports

“All things come to an end and it was inevitable that so would my time in UFC. Today I was informed that I will be released by the UFC despite my USADA suspension being nearly over and my previous requests for a release being denied. While the timing is unexpected, hopefully this opens the doors for me to continue with my mixed martial arts career as well as in the squared circle (squared circle is an old term for pro wrestling). Combat sports is one of my life’s great loves and I look forward to showing and sharing that with the fans as soon as possible.”

Olympic Gold Medalist Jordan Burroughs Denies Working with Conor McGregor Ahead of UFC 229

Despite speculation to the contrary, Jordan Burroughs is not helping Conor McGregor hone his wrestling ahead of UFC 229. Over the weekend, rumors spread that Burroughs was going to be part of the McGregor camp to help the Irishman prepare for his lightweight championship bout against Khabib Nurmagomedov on Oct. 6. The Olympic gold medalist recently took to Twitter to squash that story. “I’m not working with Conor,” Burroughs wrote. “I’m attempting to win a World Championship of my own in October. I wish him the best of luck in his upcoming title fight with Khabib.” I’m not working with Conor. I’m attempting to win a World Championship of my own in October. I wish him the best of luck in his upcoming title fight with Khabib. — Jordan Burroughs (@alliseeisgold) August 13, 2018 Burroughs certainly has the resume to help solidify McGregor’s wrestling. He was a two-time NCAA national champion at the University of Nebraska before capturing gold in freestyle wrestling at the 2012 Summer Olympics. He’s also won multiple gold medals at the world championships.

Everything You Need to Know About the Weekend in Boxing

The @GoldenBoyBoxing @facebook show is officially an epic failure. Who would watch this again if the stream dies in the middle of the main event? @OscarDeLaHoya @makeawar — Dan Rafael (@danrafaelespn) August 12, 2018 When I wrote last week that the fight between Joseph “Jojo” Diaz and Jesus Rojas was too good a fight to be stuck on Facebook instead of a major TV network like HBO, Showtime or ESPN, I was worried that I had become out of touch with the modern media landscape. Maybe with its larger reach putting a fight on Facebook was better than having it on a premium network, maybe young people like to watch events on phones more than TV’s, maybe Facebook really is the future of sports broadcasting. After Saturday night’s debacle, I feel much better. The internet was furious as Golden Boy’s stream was spotty, the video quality was lacking, and upwards of 40,000 people lost the stream completely for huge portions of the fight. Dan Rafael called it an “ epic failure ” and couldn’t even provide a score for who he thought won the fight because he had missed so many rounds due to the bad connection.

Infographic: Professional Fighters League Season 1 Light Heavyweight Playoff Standings Update

The inaugural Professional Fighters League light heavyweight division does not pack quite the same level of star power as its 145- or 155-pound classes, but it has had no shortage of entertaining fights, including some electrifying finishes. In any event, the season has shown that casual-fan name recognition is no guarantee of success, as some of the best-known fighters in the division have experienced mixed results. The story -- and surprise -- of the season so far has been Vinny Magalhaes . While the “TUF 8” runner-up came into the season with name value and world-class grappling credentials, he had spent nearly a year away from the sport on the heels of two straight losses. However, “Pezao” has shown up appearing to be in the best shape of his career and steamrolled his way to the top of the standings in barely three minutes of cage time. While his first-round rear-naked choke victory over Jamie Abdallah was nothing more than one would expect of a Mundials and ADCC champion taking on an unheralded 2-2 fighter, his TKO of Brandon Halsey at Professional Fighters League 5 raised some eyebrows.

Khabib Nurmagomedov: By The Numbers

Khabib Nurmagomedov was close to facing Tony Ferguson and Max Holloway -- the former on more than one occasion -- but injuries got in the way, leaving fans to ponder and debate those dream matchups. However, Nurmagomedov will test the biggest of big-name opponents in the UFC 229 main event on Oct. 6, when he defends his undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight crown against former two-division titleholder Conor McGregor at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Ahead of Nurmagomedov’s anticipated showdown with the “Notorious” Irishman, here are some of the numbers that have come to define him: 2: Combat sambo world championships to his name. Nurmagomedov is also a prolific wrestler with a black belt in judo, making him one of the most formidable grapplers in all of MMA. 4: Bouts in the first month of his professional career. Nurmagomedov debuted with a triangle choke submission of Vusal Bayramov at a Combat Sambo Federation of Ukraine event on Sept. 13, 2008. He then fought three times in one day at the Pankration Atrium Cup on Oct.

The 175-Pound Gorilla in the Room

The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced that surging welterweight Kamaru Usman has been chosen as a backup for the Tyron Woodley - Darren Till title fight headlining UFC 228 on Sept. 8. This is not the first time the UFC has had a fighter on call who was not otherwise scheduled to fight on the card in question. The promotion had Alexander Volkov in town and had him weigh in at UFC 226 in case either of the two heavyweight contests atop the card needed a last-minute replacement. In hindsight, they should have had him step in for Francis Ngannou or Derrick Lewis , or just run in the cage with them and start throwing. Anything would have been an improvement over the fight we got. However, since Volkov is a heavyweight who doesn’t need to cut weight to make the 265-pound limit, having him on standby wasn’t a huge deal. I imagine it amounted to a nice paid vacation for the towering Russian. It is a much different matter having Usman go through a training camp and weight cut -- to the championship weight, in fact -- and then probably not fight at all.

Injury knocks Glover Teixeira from UFC Fight Night 137 main event vs. Jimi Manuwa

Manuwa (17-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) was hoping to pull out of a sudden slump. The English knockout artist has lost his past two bouts, most recently dropping a unanimous decision to Jan Blachowicz at UFC Fight Night 127. The setback followed a knockout loss to Volkan Oezdemir in a title eliminator.

UFC Champions T.J. Dillashaw, Henry Cejudo Face Off on Set of ‘Extra’

It's on, @UFC fans! @tjdillashaw & @henrycejudo are ready! #UFC @MarioLopezExtra — ExtraTV (@extratv) August 13, 2018 It would appear as though T.J. Dillashaw and Henry Cejudo are setting the stage for a champion vs. champion bout in the UFC somewhere down the road. Dillashaw and Cejudo squared off during an appearance on the set of the “Extra” news magazine show hosted by UFC fan Mario Lopez . The reigning bantamweight and flyweight titlists traded barbs before facing off in front of Lopez. “Be careful what you ask for brother. I’m taking that belt from you,” Dillashaw warned. Cejudo responded by referencing Dillashaw’s first-round technical knockout loss to John Dodson at “The Ultimate Fighter 14” finale in December 2011. “The last time you fought a flyweight, you got knocked out. Remember that,” Cejudo said. The show was filmed at Universal Studios in Hollywood on Monday, but it is currently unclear exactly when the segment will air. Both Dillashaw and Cejudo earned major victories at UFC 227 on Aug. 4. Dillashaw closed the book on his rivalry with Cody Garbrandt with a first-round stoppage in the main event, while Cejudo shocked the world thanks to a split-decision triumph over Demetrious Johnson in the co-headliner.

UFC Takes Extra Measures In Court To Keep Fighter Pay A Secret - MMA Imports

Coach Duane Ludwig: 'T.J. Dillashaw Is The Best Martial Artist Ever'

Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw , who is coming off a resounding victory in his rematch against former teammate Cody Garbrandt at UFC 227, is the greatest mixed martial arts fighter in history -- according to his head coach, Duane Ludwig . Dillashaw successfully defended his bantamweight belt earlier this month with a first-round TKO victory over Garbrandt and Ludwig believes his star pupil just continues to get better and evolve in the sport with everyone else playing catch-up. Ludwig was the head coach at Team Alpha Male in 2013-2014, where he is credited with transforming an already strong camp into arguably the best in the world, winning two consecutive “Coach of the Year” awards from the World MMA Association and helping make TAM “Camp of the Year” in 2013. When Ludwig split from the gym, Dillashaw famously chose to go with him, leading to acrimony between Dillashaw and several of his former teammates, Garbrandt among them. Ludwig recently spoke to about Dillashaw’s progression as a fighter while stating he’s the greatest the sport has ever seen.

Tony Ferguson Announces He is Medically Cleared To Fight

“Cleared” Made That Recovery My Bitch 4 Months & A Day Thanks Everyone That Believed In Me, Keep That Shit Up Time For Some Chaos & Reclaim Whats Mine- Champ — Tony Ferguson (@TonyFergusonXT) August 11, 2018 With all the talk of the high profile Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight title fight taking place on October 6 at UFC 229 between champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Irish superstar Conor McGregor , former interim champion Tony Ferguson has become something of a forgotten man. “El Cucuy,” who is currently riding a 10 fight winning streak, was scheduled to fight Nurmagomedov back in April at UFC 223 but suffered a freak accident where he tripped over some cabling in a television studio while doing promotional work in the lead-up to the event. Ferguson tore his fibular collateral ligament, forcing him to withdraw from the fight, and has been in recovery ever since. After four months of intense rehabilitation, Ferguson has finally been cleared medically to compete again, and wasted no time in letting his fans know of the good news on Twitter.

The MMA community showed love to UFC's Joe Rogan on his 51st birthday

Thank you all so much for all the birthday wishes today! I had a strange feeling today – I’ve been doing stand up comedy for more than half of my life, but today when I was sitting in my room it occurred to me in a very unique way how bizarre what I do for a living is. After having an amazing time performing for 6000 people last night in Kansas City I was waiting around to go in front of another sold out show tonight in St. Louis, and I had a wave of joy and appreciation wash over me. It energized me for the show and made me want to work harder, and think clearer, and do my best to keep this rolling and take everything I’m doing to the highest level possible. Thank you all. For everything.

Brendan Schaub trashes the UFC for promoting Greg Hardy and not Nick Newell |

“And to highlight a guy like Greg Hardy. Greg Hardy – not the person, as a person that guy, I wouldn’t piss on him if he was on fire for what he’s done to women, allegedly – however, him as a fighter, he’s an older heavyweight, has an NFL background, we’ve seen how this story works out. Trust me, we’ve seen how this story works out. He’s gonna be knocking out these lower level guys. He’s not UFC caliber. He would get beat by everyone on the current roster in the UFC. Everybody right now. But you’re gonna invest time and marketing dollars into that guy and not Nick Newell, who has fought for a world title? There’s only about four or five major leagues in mixed martial arts. World Series of Fighting is one of them. It’s produced some legit f**king champions. Marlon Moraes is a real f**king threat to T.J. Dillashaw. Lance Palmer, who is over there right now, could probably beat 98 percent of the UFC if he came over. So it’s like, to shun a guy like Nick Newell is just silly.”

Dana White Committed to Brock Lesnar, Not Stipe Miocic, Getting Next Title Shot |

“I don’t know why Stipe always feels like we’re disrespecting him, which we’re not,” White explained when speaking to “UFC Unfiltered.” “We have a lot of respect for Stipe. I think he feels like it took him a very long time to get his title shot and he felt like it took longer than it should have. Every time I turn around, he feels disrespected. He’s anything but disrespected. Complete opposite. I don’t know.

Unimpressed by champ Robert Whittaker, Paulo Costa eyes KO of Yoel Romero, then title shot

Making sure he makes a statement out of Romero would help, but there are also other possible developments of a night rich in key middleweight bouts – such as the rematch between Weidman and Rockhold. If either ex-champ gets a finish, for instance, Costa has no problem meeting the winner in a title eliminator.

Report: UFC 227 Estimated at 300,000 Pay-Per-View Buys

Pay-per-view buy rates have been down across the board for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, but it appears that UFC 227 has exceeded expectations in that regard. According to a report from , the Aug. 4 event held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles drew approximately 300,000 pay-per-view buys. Those figures are per industry estimates, as the promotion does not release its buy rates to the public. UFC 227 was headlined by a bantamweight title rematch between T.J. Dillashaw and Cody Garbrandt , which Dillashaw won via first-round knockout. In the co-main event, Henry Cejudo upset reigning flyweight king Demetrious Johnson in a split-decision triumph. The figures compare to UFC 223, which was headlined by a lightweight title showdown between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Al Iaquinta . The figures are especially encouraging considering the card didn’t have much in the way of depth outside of the two main bouts and primarily featured lighter weight fighters. Cub Swanson , who was submitted in the first-round by Renato Carneiro in a featured featherweight fight, was arguably the biggest name outside of the top two bouts.
