Anderson Silva vs. Kelvin Gastelum Targeted for UFC’s First Event in Mainland China

A middleweight bout between Anderson Silva and Kelvin Gastelum has been targeted for the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Nov. 25 event in Shanghai, China. Multiple outlets confirmed the booking on Thursday following an initial report from FloCombat.com . The event, which will likely be UFC Fight Night 122, takes place at Mercedes-Benz Arena and marks the promotion’s first event in mainland China. Silva and Gastelum were initially scheduled to meet at UFC 212 in Brazil this past June, but that bout was canceled after Gastelum received a provisional suspension for a positive marijuana test in relation to a UFC Fight Night 106 bout vs. Vitor Belfort in March. Silva halted a five-bout winless streak in his last outing at UFC 208, as he outpointed Derek Brunson on Feb. 11. Gastelum, meanwhile, is coming off a third-round submission defeat to former 185-pound champion Chris Weidman at UFC on Fox 25 on July 22.

“We appreciate all the fans,” Ellerbe said during Thursday’s open workout. “We don’t ever want to turn our back on anyone. Opinion: Money Problems Follow Money Fights

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Please accept my apology in advance, because the next two weeks are all about one thing: Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor . There are no Ultimate Fighting Championship events to think about and boxing is also relatively silent, which leaves us to discuss the Irishman’s upcoming dream fight and what the future has in store for him. But that’s actually exactly what this column is about: McGregor’s future. There has been a lot of talk about what happens after the Mayweather fight, assuming he loses (which is a foregone conclusion to most). Nobody is really talking about what happens if he were to pull off arguably the biggest upset in sports history because of the sheer unlikelihood of it all. But what happens if “Notorious” looks good? All things considered, if the UFC lightweight king were to hang around for all 36 minutes and put up a valiant fight, he’d leave the ring a winner to most.

Bibiano Fernandes Chokes Andrew Leone to Retain One Championship Featherweight Crown

Bibiano Fernandes fought like he had an appointment to keep. The AMC Pankration rep submitted World Extreme Cagefighting veteran Andrew Leone with a first-round rear-naked choke in the One Championship “Kings and Conquerors” headliner on Saturday at Cotai Arena in Macau, China. Leone conceded defeat 1:47 into Round 1. Fernandes zapped the challenger with a close-quarters knee strike along the fence, trailed him to the mat with punches and advanced to the back. Soon after, the choke was in place and Leone was a beaten man. Arguably the top bantamweight competing outside the auspices of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the 37-year-old Fernandes has rattled off 12 straight wins and has not tasted defeat in nearly seven years. In the five-round co-main event, Constrictor Team thoroughbred Adriano Moraes unified the One Championship flyweight title with a unanimous decision over the previously unbeaten Kairat Akhmetov . Moraes -- who lost a split decision to Akhmetov in November 2015 -- carved up the Kazakhstani grappler with crisp standup for the better part of 25 minutes and punctuated his third straight victory with a late takedown.

This Month’s MMA Birthdays: Joanna Jedrzejczyk Turns 30

Joanna Jedrzejczyk has laid waste to an entire division in three short years, and she shows no signs of slowing down. The Polish powerhouse will celebrate her 30th birthday on Aug. 18. Jedrzejczyk arrived on the Ultimate Fighting Championship scene as an undefeated but unproven prospect in July 2014 and went on an absolute tear at 115 pounds. After victories over Juliana Lima and Claudia Gadelha made her the No. 1 contender, she captured the women’s strawweight championship with a brutal beatdown of Carla Esparza at UFC 185. Jedrzejczyk has only tightened her grip on the throne since, as she emerged as the top pound-for-pound fighter in women’s MMA. Now operating out of American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida, “Joanna Champion” has successfully defended the 115-pound title on five occasions, besting Gadelha in their rematch, Jessica Penna, Valerie Letourneau , Karolina Kowalkiewicz and Jessica Andrade . In those five appearances, Jedrzejczyk has outlanded the opposition by an eye-popping 994-406 margin, per FightMetric.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Bones Back on the Throne

Whether he keeps his nose clean and reigns as a pound-for-pound king remains to be seen, but for now, Jon Jones is back and he is top light heavyweight on the planet. Jones spent 15 months out of the cage and eight months out of our official rankings after his positive tests for clomiphene and letrozole prior to his slated rematch with Daniel Cormier at UFC 200 . Just over a year after news of Jones' test failure broke, he returned to action at Volkan Oezdemir was. Oezdemir is 3-0 in the Octagon after he flattened British banger Jimi Manuwa in just 42 seconds. With the victory, “No Time” jumps from No. 7 to our top five at 205 pounds. Many of the UFC 214 particulars, even those in title fights, simply held down their positions. Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino now has a UFC title belt, but she was already the 145-pound queen of the world. Tyron Woodley is still on top at 170 pounds and Robbie Lawler is still the No. 2 welterweight in the world, while the likes of No. 3 Demian Maia and No. 10 Donald Cerrone stay put despite their defeats.

The Bottom Line: Don’t Stop the Interviews

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * At some point in the last year, Joe Rogan decided it was wrong to interview fighters after they suffer knockout losses. The topic was never really debated internally or externally; many around the sport simply accepted this as a new rule despite the fact that main event UFC fighters have been getting interviewed after knockout losses for well over a decade and it pretty much always ends up a positive moment for the losing fighter. The idea not to do it anymore obviously came from a well-intentioned place, so it quickly gained traction. Rogan broke his new rule at UFC 214 on Saturday. He asked Daniel Cormier about his loss to Jon Jones after it happened. It produced a piece of poignant human drama that fans will remember for years to come. Rogan, of course, proceeded to profusely apologize for doing so, and the finger pointing quickly ensued.

Mike Winkeljohn: Holly Holm Can Pick Cris ‘Cyborg’ Apart, Win Via Stoppage

While Mike Winkeljohn, Holly Holm ’s longtime striking coach, is confident in his fighter’s ability to defeat newly-crowned featherweight queen Cristiane Justino , it isn’t necessarily a given that the fight will happen. “There’s talks back and forth,” Winkeljohn recently told Submission Radio . “Right now it’s at a point where Holly fought her last fight at 135. Jumping up in weight with Cyborg cutting, those are issues that we have to think about and decide time-wise what’s best. Holly, on a side note, never will turn down a fight. She’s like, ‘Yeah whatever you want.’ She’ll just go out and fight. She’s OK with fighting Cyborg, there’s no doubt about it. She really wanted to get a shot at [Valentina] Shevchenko again, or [Amanda] Nunes. She just wants a big fight, and she’s very capable of it.” After falling to Germaine de Randamie at UFC 208 in a bid for the inaugural women’s featherweight championship, Holm returned to 135 pounds at UFC Fight Night 111. There, she halted a three-bout skid with a third-round head-kick knockout of Bethe Correia on June 17.

Just how much liability do the sports books face with Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather?

“In terms of true odds, Mayweather should be a much greater favorite,” Todd Fuhrman, gaming insider for Fox Sports and CBS, told MMAjunkie. “But sportsbooks can only incur so much liability. As is, books in Vegas are facing a high-six-figure, low-seven-figure liability if McGregor pulls it out. If he does pull off the unthinkable, you’ll hear a lot of sportsbooks crying about how they’re going to pay the power bill on Aug. 27.”

Chris Fishgold will defend his lightweight crown against Alexander Jacobsen in the Cage Warriors 88 headliner. The European promotion announced the contest on Thursday. Cage Warriors 88 takes place at Echo Arena in Liverpool, England on Oct. 28. The main card will stream on UFC Fight Pass. Fishgold enters the matchup on a six-bout winning streak. The Englishman claimed the vacant 155-pound belt with a first-round submission of Adam Boussif and has since defended the title with triumphs over Jason Ponet and Nic Herron-Webb . The Next Generation UK standout is 16-1 as a professional, including 11 victories via submission. A native of Bergen, Norway, Jacobsen has won eight consecutive contests since dropping his professional MMA debut in March 2014. “Bad Romance” last appeared at Cage Warriors 84, where he captured a unanimous verdict against Tom Green .

Sherdog’s Top 10: UFC Lightweight Title Fights - Top 10

Nine men have held the Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight title since its inception in February 2001, from Jens Pulver , Sean Sherk , B.J. Penn and Frankie Edgar to Benson Henderson , Anthony Pettis , Rafael dos Anjos , Eddie Alvarez and Conor McGregor . Their respective reigns have resulted in some of the most memorable fights in UFC history. Despite Penn’s desire to go big-game hunting throughout his stellar but uneven career, no one has done more to raise the profile of what has become arguably the deepest weight class in the sport. The Hawaiian held the lightweight championship for a record 812 days, successfully defending it on three different occasions before relinquishing his hold on the throne. McGregor stands as the current standard bearer at 155 pounds, the charismatic Irishman having taken the sport by storm less than four years after he made his UFC debut. Mike Winkeljohn: Jon Jones Couldn’t Lift Arm Two Days Before Beating Cormier at UFC 214

While Jon Jones looked better than ever in regaining the light heavyweight crown at UFC 214 , “Bones” wasn’t 100 percent going into his rematch with Daniel Cormier . According to striking coach Mike Winkeljohn, Jones had limited movement in one of his arms after injuring it shortly before the July 29 bout. “A couple of nights before the fight, he couldn’t lift his arm. He had hurt it wrestling. He wrestled a little too hard with his partner and maybe from a lack of warm up, I’m not sure, but it was kind scary,” Winkeljohn told Submission Radio . “It was one of those situations where when I was warming him up I’d ask the coaches and they had agreed, they were ahead of me on this, that we shouldn’t be doing a lot wrestling because I didn’t want Jon to try and have to underhook and lift with his one arm because it could potentially cause it to be hurt again and mess with his mindset. I wanted to keep that out of it and hopefully so that way if it got re-injured in the fight, the adrenaline would take over.” While the Jones camp was able to keep the ailment under wraps leading into the matchup, there was still that feeling of uncertainty as Jones stood across from Cormier in the Octagon at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

UFC Fight Night 117 Update: Luke Jumeau, Shinsho Anzai to Clash in Japan on Sept. 23

A welterweight showdown between Luke Jumeau and Shinsho Anzai has been added to the UFC Fight Night 117 lineup. The Las Vegas-based promotion recently announced the matchup. UFC Fight Night 117 takes place at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, on Sept. 23 and is headlined by a light heavyweight rematch between Ovince St. Preux and Mauricio Rua . The card is expected to air on Fox Sports 1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass. Jumeau made his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 110, where he outpointed Dominque Steele on June 10. “The Jedi” improved to 12-3 with that victory and has now won his last seven professional appearances. Anzai will be competing for the first time since Sept. 26, 2015, when he earned a third-round TKO triumph over Roger Zapata at UFC Fight Night 75. The 31-year-old Tokyo native has won seven of his last eight bouts, with five of those victories coming via technical knockout.

Jan Blachowicz vs. Devin Clark Booked for UFC Fight Night 118 in Poland

Jan Blachowicz will get the chance to compete on home soil when he squares off against Devin Clark at UFC Fight Night 118 in Poland. Promotion officials recently announced the light heavyweight pairing. UFC Fight Night 118 takes place at Ergo Arena in Gdansk, Poland, on Oct. 21. The card does not yet have a main event. Blachowicz has struggled since his Octagon debut in 2014. The 34-year-old Pole entered the Las Vegas-based organization having won 15 of his past 16 fights but has gone just 2-4 in the promotion. Blachowicz is coming off back-to-back losses to Patrick Cummins and Alexander Gustafsson in his last two outings. Clark, meanwhile, has posted consecutive decision triumphs over Jake Collier and Josh Stansbury after losing his Octagon debut to Alex Nicholson via first-round knockout. The Jackson-Wink representative is 8-1 as a professional overall, with four of those triumphs coming inside the distance.

Conor McGregor-Nate Diaz fight analysis from Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe is cringeworthy

Bayless: “Speaking of fighting a bigger man, a guy who outweighed him by – I’m going to guess – 40 pounds and had, what, 5 inches of reach on him and got him on the ground. It’s called wrestling – sumo style wrestling. And he just pinned him. He pinned him.”

40
Twitter Mailbag: Is this McGregor-Malignaggi thing a feud or a plan for the future?

I don’t get the sense that the UFC is throwing him in against Borrachinho because it wants to halt the young Brazilian’s momentum. Seems more likely that the goal here is to give the unbeaten prospect a win over a former champ, making Hendricks the wet rag that the UFC is intent on squeezing every last drop of value from before it tosses him aside. That ought to worry him. The possibility that it’s still not motivating enough for him at this point is what worries me.

Canelo Alvarez: Fight with Gennady Golovkin Can Be ‘One of the Best in History’

Though most of the fight world is focused on the ballyhooed megafight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor later this month, those who follow the fight game know that arguably the best possible boxing clash takes place on Sep. 16. Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will square off against Kazakhstani powerhouse Gennady Golovkin, a matchup of the two best middleweights on the planet. The two will collide at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with the action broadcast to the masses live via HBO Pay Per View and on Tuesday afternoon, Canelo spoke with assembled media via conference call. One of the sticking points going into this fight is the fact that “GGG” is not only undefeated with brutal punching power, it’s that the Mexican’s fists aren’t as lethal as his foe’s. Many boxing insiders are likely underestimating Canelo’s punching power, or least cooking up that narrative, but the Guadalajara native doesn’t necessarily buy into it, especially when asked if Team Golovkin could be ignoring Saul’s striking. “I don't think they're underestimating my power,” he told the media.

Sherdog’s Top 10: August Tussles Worth Watching - Kunitskaya vs. Pa'aluhi

In an effort to bring more attention to the global stage of mixed martial arts, this list does not focus on major North American-based promotions like the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Bellator MMA and the Professional Fighters League. The void left by the departure of Tonya Evinger will soon be filled. Yana Kunitskaya will take on Raquel Pa'aluhi for the vacant Invicta Fighting Championships bantamweight title in the Invicta 25 headliner on Aug. 31 at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, California. The event will stream to UFC Fight Pass in its entirety at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, with the winner replacing the UFC-contracted Evinger on the 135-pound throne. Kunitskaya was briefly in possession of the Invicta bantamweight championship, but a November submission victory against Evinger was overturned due to an officiating error. The 27-year-old Russian lost the rematch four months later, as she succumbed to a second-round rear-naked choke. An accomplished muay Thai practitioner and taekwondo stylist, Kunitskaya started her professional career with eight wins in her first nine appearances -- a run that included a 34-second stoppage of Cindy Dandois in 2010.

Sara McMann to Face Ketlen Vieira at UFC 215

It seemed for a while as though the two would never meet, but after two separate date changes, Sara McMann and Ketlen Vieira will finally lock horns. McMann made the announcement Tuesday afternoon on her Instagram account. “After two different date changes, I'm happy to announce that I'm fighting Ketlen Vieira on September 9 for UFC 215 . It seems like I've been training for her for like a year but ol' Abe Lincoln said 'Give me (6) hours to chop down a tree and I'll spend the first (4) sharpening my ax.” McMann last fought in February where she submitted Gina Mazany in the first round. A former Ultimate Fighting Championship women's bantamweight title challenger and former Olympic wrestler, McMann has won her last three bouts. She's scored back-to-back submission wins and could align herself back into title contention with a win. Vieira is coming off a decision win over Ashlee Evans-Smith in April. The Brazilian has been dominant in the pro ranks, having yet to taste defeat. She's 2-0 in the Octagon, but has yet to face someone the caliber of McMann.
