By the Numbers: UFC 214
Jon
Jones has reclaimed his spot atop the light heavyweight
division.
Jones closed the book on his rivalry with Daniel
Cormier in emphatic fashion, as he became the first person to
finish “DC” in 21 professional bouts with a third-round technical
knockout victory in the UFC
214 headliner at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on
Saturday night. With the victory, Jones regained the 205-pound belt
he lost for his actions outside the Octagon more than two years
ago. .
With each victory, the milestones continue to pile up for the
Jackson-Wink MMA product. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 214,
with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com.
17: Light heavyweight victories for Jones, the most in modern UFC
light heavyweight history.
14: Consecutive victories in UFC competition for Jones, the second
longest winning streak in the history of the light heavyweight
promotion behind Anderson
Silva (16).
11: Victories in title fights for Jones, tying him with Anderson
Silva and Demetrious
Johnson for second most in UFC history.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Bones Back on the Throne
Whether he keeps his nose clean and reigns as a pound-for-pound
king remains to be seen, but for now, Jon Jones is
back and he is top light heavyweight on the planet.
Jones spent 15 months out of the cage and eight months out of our
official rankings after his positive tests for clomiphene and
letrozole prior to his slated rematch with Daniel
Cormier at UFC
200 . Just over a year after news of Jones' test failure broke,
he returned to action at

in just 42 seconds. With the victory, “No Time” jumps from No. 7 to

Many of the UFC 214 particulars, even those in title fights, simply
held down their positions. Cristiane
“Cyborg” Justino now has a UFC title belt, but she was already
the 145-pound queen of the world. Tyron
Woodley is still on top at 170 pounds and Robbie
Lawler is still the No. 2 welterweight in the world, while the
likes of No. 3 Demian Maia
and No. 10 Donald
Cerrone stay put despite their defeats.

At some point in the last year, Joe Rogan decided it was wrong to
interview fighters after they suffer knockout losses. The topic was
never really debated internally or externally; many around the
sport simply accepted this as a new rule despite the fact that main
event UFC fighters have been getting interviewed after knockout
losses for well over a decade and it pretty much always ends up a
positive moment for the losing fighter. The idea not to do it
anymore obviously came from a well-intentioned place, so it quickly
gained traction.
Rogan broke his new rule at UFC
214 on Saturday. He asked Daniel
Cormier about his loss to Jon Jones
after it happened. It produced a piece of poignant human drama that
fans will remember for years to come. Rogan, of course, proceeded
to profusely apologize for doing so, and the finger pointing
quickly ensued.

MMA’s Greats of the States | Wyoming: Nate Marquardt
Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe,
bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of
their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or
state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States
are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly
is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series,
the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of
all-time from each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C. Fighters
do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent
it; they simply need to be associated with it.

Colby Covington explains tweet siding with Dana White over 'shady person' Tyron Woodley
“I thought it was pathetic,” Covington said. “I’ve got some better footage of him in the gym throwing a strike. It was bad. He fights conservative. He’s not a real fighter. He plays it safe.”

Want to wager more on Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight? Check out these prop bets
When odds opened for the fight, Mayweather was widely available as a -2250 favorite , which implies a win probability of 96 percent over +950 underdog McGregor (in fact, the lines were even more lopsided at some books). Now, after money has consistently poured in on McGregor, the UFC lightweight champion can be found as low as +375 while Mayweather’s favorite status has dipped all the way to -550 (84 percent win probability).

Tyron Woodley responds to Dana White's UFC 214 criticism with threat, demand for public apology
“I’ve done nothing but good stuff for the sport. I’ve done nothing but be a good model for the f*cking organization,” Woodley said. “I go out there, and I fight with integrity. I covered your sport from the FOX desk a week before my fight. I always uphold my responsibilities to the organization. It’s timeout for that. The word behind ‘business’ is ‘man.’ You need to be a man; you owe me a public apology. And if I don’t get that, I’m going to start leaking some sh*t that people don’t want to be out in the wind. I’m not even kidding about that.”

“When you talk to Conor, at first I started thinking this guy doesn’t really think he’s going to win this, it’s just a $100 million fight for him,” Malignaggi said. “Then when you really start to talk to him, you start to realize that this guy really believes it down deep inside his heart and he’s got every reason to, because every time he’s been doubted in his life he has been able to overcome those odds and win, no matter what it is.”

Dana White and Tyron Woodley Reportedly Squash Their Feud | MMAWeekly.com
St-Pierre had delayed a fight with middleweight champion Michael Bisping to the point that White decided that ship had sailed and instead declared that the former 170-pound champion would challenge the winner of Woodley vs. Maia. Following UFC 214, however, White said that ship turned around and stated that the fight between St-Pierre and Bisping was back on; Woodley would not get the fight with GSP.

Undefeated Andre Harrison Dominates Steven Rodriguez in PFL ‘Everett’ Headliner
Professional Fighters League featherweight champion Andre
Harrison showed once again why he is considered one of MMA’s
best-kept secrets, as he dominated Steven
Rodriguez in the
PFL 2 main event on Saturday at Xfinity Arena in Everett,
Washington.
Harrison outstruck the Costa Rican on the feet and outmuscled him
in the clinch, but he did his best work when he executed takedowns
and mauled Rodriguez on the canvas. The challenger refused to
yield, but Harrison was relentless and won a lopsided unanimous
decision. All three cageside judges scored it 49-46 for Harrison,
who remained undefeated at 17-0.
The well-traveled Yushin Okami
was equally impressive against Andre
Lobato in the welterweight co-feature. The Japanese veteran
took down Lobato at will, controlling him with suffocating pressure
and strikes from top position. He had no answers for Okami, who
cruised to a convincing unanimous decision: 30-27, 30-27 and
30-25.
Former Shooto and
Strikeforce
champion Jake Shields
had no issues with Danny Davis
Jr. , as he grounded the
Xtreme Couture rep repeatedly, softened him with punches and
threatened with countless submission attempts, primarily the
rear-naked choke.

Cub Swanson has interesting response to ex-champ Jose Aldo's sudden interest in rematch
The meeting, of course, would be a rematch – their first bout, which took place over eight years at WEC 41, ended in less than 10 seconds thanks to Aldo’s perfectly-placed knees. Now, Aldo’s the one coming off a loss. And Swanson is riding a four-fight streak – including two “Fight of the Night” battles – since his own loss to Holloway and has been making the case for his first UFC title shot.

Paulie Malignaggi is impressed by Conor McGregor's punching power – but not that impressed
“I can’t say based on a sparring session, ‘Oh, I’m going to pick this guy to win the fight,'” Malignaggi said. “But I will say this: He’s serious about what he wants to do. He has an awkwardness to where he can land some shots, and I wouldn’t say his power is what the reputation holds it for. I wouldn’t say it’s that strong, but his power is enough to where you definitely should respect it.”

Sara McMann to Face Ketlen Vieira at UFC 215
It seemed for a while as though the two would never meet, but after
two separate date changes, Sara McMann
and Ketlen
Vieira will finally lock horns.
McMann made the announcement Tuesday afternoon on her Instagram
account.
“After two different date changes, I'm happy to announce that I'm
fighting Ketlen
Vieira on September 9 for UFC
215 . It seems like I've been training for her for like a year
but ol' Abe Lincoln said 'Give me (6) hours to chop down a tree and
I'll spend the first (4) sharpening my ax.”
McMann last fought in February where she submitted Gina Mazany
in the first round. A former
Ultimate Fighting Championship women's bantamweight title
challenger and former Olympic wrestler, McMann has won her last
three bouts. She's scored back-to-back submission wins and could
align herself back into title contention with a win.
Vieira is coming off a decision win over Ashlee
Evans-Smith in April. The Brazilian has been dominant in the
pro ranks, having yet to taste defeat. She's 2-0 in the Octagon,
but has yet to face someone the caliber of McMann.

Julian Marquez, Brandon Davis Earn UFC Contracts on Dana White’s Contender Series
Julian
Marquez put foot to face for one of the year’s most brutal
knockouts.
The
Syndicate MMA middleweight cut down Phil Hawes
with a savage second-round head kick in the
fourth installment of Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender
Series at the UFC Training Center in Las Vegas. An unconscious
Hawes (4-2) hit the deck 2:20 into Round 2 and remained there for
several tense moments.
Marquez (6-1) surrendered a pair of takedowns in the first round
but avoided any significant danger, even as his opponent twice
advanced to his back. Early in the second round, he clipped Hawes
with a volley of power punches, pancaked into top position and
dropped elbows in half guard. Once the Jackson-Wink MMA rep escaped
to his feet, Marquez greeted him with clubbing rights and lefts.
Hawes pulled guard in a last act of desperation. As he attempted to
return to an upright position, Marquez drilled him with the
fight-ending head kick.
Afterward, Marquez was awarded an
Ultimate Fighting Championship contract.

Kyoji Horiguchi Destroys Hideo Tokoro; Otsuka, Taha Advance in Rizin 2017 Bantamweight GP
In the opening round of the
Rizin 2017 Bantamweight Grand Prix , Kyoji
Horiguchi looked every bit the focal point that Rizin Fighting
Federation wanted him to be.
Sunday inside Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, the former
Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight title contender ran
roughshod over popular Japanese “Cinderella Man” Hideo
Tokoro , needing just 109 seconds to knock his target out in the
main event of Rizin's Grand Prix kick-off show. The 26-year-old
Horiguchi quickly landed a right cross in a punch exchange to drop
Tokoro, then followed up with ground-and-pound to force referee
Yoshinori
Umeki into action just 1:49 into the contest.
With his victory, Horiguchi advances to the quarterfinals of
Rizin's bantamweight tournament. The remaining Round of 16 bouts
will be held on July 30, back at Saitama Super Arena.
Joining Horiguchi in the quarterfinal round will be Japan's
Takafumi
Otsuka and Germany's Khalid
Taha . Otsuka used his wrestling to ground UFC veteran Anthony
Birchak and earn a split decision, despite being knocked down
and viciously soccer kicked at points throughout the contest.
