Demetrious Johnson is one of the most dominant champions in UFC history, yet, he is often doubted for consideration in the conversation of who is the Greatest Of All Time. Infographic: Professional Fighters League Season 1 Light Heavyweight Playoff Standings

Professional Fighters League ’s light heavyweight division features 12 men vying for eight playoff spots and a shot at the $1 million divisional prize, and Thursday’s PFL 5 card featrues several of those men. Most notably, current front-runners Vinny Magalhaes and Maxim Grishin are both in action. The Ultimate Fighter Season 8 finalist Magalhaes takes on former Bellator MMA middleweight champ Brandon Halsey . Meanwhile Grishin, who entered the season after going 13-1 over the last five years, primarily in his native Russia, is slated to meet Rakim Cleveland . Magalhaes and Grishin both earned their way to the top of the initial standings by winning their first fights by first-round stoppage. In PFL’s formula, wins inside the distance are weighted, the earlier in the fight the better. Magalhaes choked out Australia’s Jamie Abdallah in the first round at PFL 2 in June, while Grishin defeated Jason Butcher at the same event in a strange-looking finish wherein Grishin rocked his man with a combo that caused him to stumble and injure his own ankle. The PFL regular season will continue to run through August, with the playoffs scheduled to begin in October.

In the co-main event, Demetrious Johnson will defend his flyweight crown against Henry Cejudo in another rematch. The evening’s main card airs on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. Prelims begin on UFC Fight Pass before moving to FX at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m PT. Correia vs. Aldana was slated for the FX portion of the prelims. Correia hasn’t competed since suffering a head-kick knockout loss to Holly Holm in the UFC Fight Night 111 main event in June 2017. The Brazilian is just 1-3-1 in her last five Octagon appearances, including a 34-second knockout loss to Ronda Rousey in a title bout at UFC 190. After opening her promotional tenure with back-to-back losses, Aldana picked up her first Octagon victory with a unanimous decision triumph over Talita Bernardo at UFC Fight Night 124.

From Joe 'Daddy' to 'Coach Joe'

Joe Stevenson is a veteran of 49 professional mixed martial arts bouts, dating back to 1999. Those numbers become all the more surprising when you realize Stevenson is only 36 years old. Yet what may surprise fans of the sport even more is that the California native has been an MMA coach for almost as long as he's been a fighter. The man nicknamed “Daddy” became a coach in the first place through circumstance, rather than as a planned gig. “My coach at the time was fighting in the UFC, and he was kind of focused on himself, so I ended up coaching a lot of [his] classes,” Stevenson told Sherdog.com. It was the beginning of a parallel journey he would have for the next decade and half as fighter and a coach. Some of Stevenson’s earliest lessons in coaching occurred when he worked with MMA legend Bas Rutten for several of his camps, including for his bout with Kevin Randleman at UFC 20, where he won the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title. Incredibly, Stevenson was still in high school at the time. Stevenson began his own fighting career at the age of 17.

Oezdemir (15-2) made his promotional debut in February 2017 and reeled off three consecutive wins. By The Numbers: Cody Garbrandt

UFC 227 is now available on Amazon Prime . By beating Dominick Cruz for the Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight title, Cody Garbrandt did what nobody had done in nearly 10 years, namely time The Dominator’s movements. And he did so when not many people gave him a chance. But against someone who knew him better, Garbrandt faltered. At UFC 207, T.J. Dillashaw deprived him of a successful first title defense by knocking him out in the second round. It was a barn-burner of a match that had both sides banking on precision striking to get the job done. In the first round, Garbrandt appeared to have his rival’s number, even dropping him as time expired. Then Round 2 saw Dillashaw connecting during an exchange, which eventually led to the finish. Their upcoming rematch is expected to offer a surplus of excitement, as Garbrandt is hell-bent on taking his belt back. UFC 227 will take place on Aug. 4 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Before the two movement specialists settle the score, here are some of the numbers that have defined “No Love.

Eddie Alvarez breaks silence on Dustin Poirier loss, controversial elbow at UFC Calgary

There are no grey areas in Fighting , one man will lose and the other will win , this is why I love this game . Controversial calls , judging , and fan support can always add to the drama but in the end 1 will stand and 1 will fall . Hats off to Dustin and his team he stayed calm under pressure and fought beautifully this makes us 1-1 . In no way will I judge Godard harshly , We have the same Job ! he has to make decisions in split seconds just like I do , and he makes them with my health and my opponents in mind . What’s done is done . As for Mark Henry calling for an elbow in the heat of the moment . An angled elbow is an incredible shot from the position I was in , it’s actually the only shot you can throw . We simply had a miscommunication, it happens in war more often than not , this was a case of “friendly fire” and we ended up on the losing end of this battle . But let’s remember Ricardo and Mark are also responsible for my UFC world title , and wins over some of the greatest fighters in the UFC , He’s the hardest worker on our team , obsessive, detailed , and pushes us all to understand the opportunity we have in front of is on a world stage .

Dana White's Contender Series 15: Grading the winners, with 4 UFC contracts and 3.87 GPA

With a refreshing but digestible format that has fans of the sport responding, this series has shown to have legs beyond its summer seasons while serving as a crockpot for contenders whom the UFC matchmakers can use for future events. With that trend in mind, I’ve decided to take a look at the winning fighters regardless of whether or not they won a UFC contract while grading their performances in regards to their probability of returning to a UFC stage.

Why PFL 5's Brandon Halsey thinks Vinny Magalhaes is 'one of the best matchups I could get'

“If you look at previous fights, where you have the traditional wrestler-grappler matchup – if the wrestler is really good at wrestling in this position, they end up nullifying that jiu-jitsu game,” Halsey said. “They’re able to stay in dominant positions. So, I think it’s one of the best matchups I could get. If you look at previous history, wrestlers usually dominate when they hold their positions right.”

Demetrious Johnson Claims He Accepted Fight vs. T.J. Dillashaw Before Shoulder Surgery

UFC 227 is now available on Amazon Prime . Demetrious Johnson apparently accepted a champion vs. champion superfight against T.J. Dillashaw earlier this year before an injury derailed those plans. “Mighty Mouse,” the reigning UFC flyweight champion, revealed during a recent conference call that he didn’t get offered the fight against Dillashaw, the bantamweight king, after he recovered from shoulder surgery . “I accepted the fight, I got injured, I had surgery, and they never offered it to me after I got injured,” Johnson said. “When they offered it to me I accepted, I got injured and got surgery, and then when it came time to fight again, from my understanding, from my management’s point of view, T.J. got offered to fight Cody [Garbrandt] with a brand new deal, so God bless him for getting a new deal to fight Cody. “So the entire lead-up to this fight, even in July, I was never offered to fight T.J. Dillashaw . Before I got injured I was up for fighting him, then they moved on and went with Cody and T.J.” Instead, Johnson will defend his 125-pound belt in a rematch with Henry Cejudo in the UFC 227 co-main event.

Donald Cerrone Parts Ways With Striking Coach Brandon Gibson

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight title contender Donald Cerrone has parted ways with his striking coach, Brandon Gibson, in an effort to change things up going forward in his career. "Cowboy" originally teamed up with the highly-regarded Gibson in 2016, around the time he moved up to the welterweight division. The move paid dividends early on as “Cowboy” won his first four fights at welterweight, earning “Performance of the Night” bonuses in three of them. However, since his win against Matt Brown in December 2016, he has gone 1-4 with his most recent fight a unanimous decision loss against Leon Edwards in June. After the loss to Edwards, Cerrone decided to mix things up, precipitating the split from Gibson. The news was confirmed in a report by ESPN’s Ariel Helwani ,. “When Donald Cerrone fights Mike Perry on Nov. 10 he won’t have one of the most respected coaches in MMA in his corner. Following Cerrone’s unanimous decision loss to Leon Edwards last month, he parted ways with striking coach Brandon Gibson, ESPN recently confirmed with Gibson.

Cody Garbrandt: T.J. Dillashaw Made Every Excuse Possible Not to Take the Rematch with Me | MMAWeekly.com

“This is what the UFC wanted. The UFC called me to fight TJ in the March card when [Max] Holloway got hurt and no second thoughts. Yes, right away,” Garbrandt explained when talking about his rematch with Dillashaw on Monday. “I was about to have a baby and I ended up having a baby the same weekend. I just asked my wife, I said I’m going to have this fight, I feel good, that’s how confident I am. I’m so confident that I know what I’m able to do to TJ healthy. Nobody in the world can beat me when I’m healthy. Those are facts.”

PFL's Chris Wade Admits to Underestimating His Last Opponent

Chris Wade heads into his second fight with Professional Fighters League in a mental state that might be described as “happily frustrated.” He is proud to a part of the league but is on a mission to rectify the disappointment of his debut loss. At PFL 2, Wade entered the lightweight regular season as a well-known name -- coming off of a 5-2 run in the Ultimate Fighting Championship -- and a favorite to go far. However, like several other former UFC veterans, such as Eddie Gordon and Thiago Tavares , he lost his season-opening fight. Wade is completely honest when he evaluates what went wrong against Natan Schulte . “I slept on my opponent, and I didn’t work as hard as I needed to work [before the fight],” Wade told Sherdog.com. “I thought that he didn’t have anything for me.” Although he studied Schulte and watched video of his previous bouts, Wade admits he was unprepared for the blistering pace the pair fought at from the outset. Wade was also amazed by the amount of damage his opponent was able to incur, without backing up.

Jan Blachowicz vs. Nikita Krylov added to UFC Fight Night 136 in Moscow

Krylov, a 26-year-old Ukrainian fighter and former heavyweight, is surging at 205 pounds. He’s won four straight fights outside of the UFC – the three most recent ones via knockout – and is 9-1 since a 2014 loss to Ovince Saint Preux. His recent four victories have come primarily with the Fight Nights Global promotion, where he knocked out fellow UFC vet Fabio Maldonado to win the organization’s light-heavyweight belt in his most recent performance.

TJ Dillashaw explains why Cody Garbrandt's attitude has changed ahead of rematch | BJPenn.com

Darren Till Doesn't Consider Woodley a Threat

“Right now, there’s not a man in that division who can f*cking beat me. There’s just not a man. And it’s certainly not Woodley,” @darrentill2 on yesterday’s #HelwaniShow. On Covington: “He wanted everything on his terms. The UFC didn’t want that.” More: https://t.co/Xf0cdMW5j5 pic.twitter.com/oMenibw4mk — Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) July 31, 2018 Darren Till ’s profile has definitely risen in the wake of the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s announcement that he would be taking on 170-pound champion Tyron Woodley at UFC 228 on September 8, 2018 at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. Only a few weeks ago, fans were gearing up to see the unifying of the welterweight title between Woodley and recent interim champion Colby Covington . However, Covington couldn’t make the September date due to recent surgery and rather than wait for him to recover, UFC matchmakers decided to award the shot to Till who is coming off his biggest win of his career, a unanimous decision victory over Stephen Thompson back in May. Till appeared on a recent episode of Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show and claimed the UFC didn’t want to wait for Covington to recover from surgery because he was making too many demands.

Mighty Mouse says collecting all other world titles is what 'really gets me excited'

Johnson being interested in going around the world to collect all of the other organization’s titles is definitely a new and interesting idea. Paulo Costa Hoping Romero Misses Weight For A Third Straight Fight

The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced a mouth-watering middleweight bout between two juggernauts in the 185-pound division between Paulo Costa and former title challenger Yoel Romero which is set to be held in New York on November 3. Despite the official announcement by the UFC, however, the bout is not set in stone as Romero has yet to sign the contract. Romero underwent surgery following his loss to the middleweight champion Robert Whittaker in June and despite the Cuban not signing yet, his opponent Costa is confident the fight will happen. ”I’ve signed the contract, it’s on for me,” Costa told MMA Fighting . “He has his contract already, he’s just needs to get up the courage and sign it. But he will sign it. He doesn’t have anyone else to fight.” The imposing Brazilian had previously stated his desire to fight former champion Chris Weidman after his devastating win over Uriah Hall last month and was surprised when UFC matchmakers offered him the “Soldier of God.” ”I really liked the fact that they chose Romero.

'Cyborg' Says Superfight With Nunes Not The Biggest Challenge of Her Career

A superfight between current Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s featherweight champion Cristiane Justino , better known as “Cyborg,” and bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes is all but confirmed although an actual date hasn’t been set which is causing a lot of frustration for “Cyborg,” who says she is ready to fight now. “Cyborg” produced another devastating performance in her demolition of Yana Kunitskaya back in March, finishing the former Invicta FC champion in the first round and remaining undefeated in her UFC career. The 33 year-old Brazilian was hopeful of keeping active by taking the fight with Nunes in September although the bantamweight champ announced on social media that she has signed a contract to fight “Cyborg” at UFC 232 on December 29 in Las Vegas, Nevada. This announcement didn’t sit well with the pound-for-pound queen who wanted to be more active in 2018 and said she’d be willing to face another featherweight in the meantime to keep her momentum going. ”Amanda has talked a bunch of stuff, saying she couldn’t fight, that she was injured and would take her six months to recover,” Cyborg told MMA Fighting .

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Louisiana Lightning

Dustin Poirier cemented himself as a legitimate title contender in the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s lightweight division, with a little help from the rulebook. “The Diamond” extended his winning streak to three fights, as he cut down former UFC and Bellator MMA lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez with punches in the second round of their UFC on Fox 30 headliner on July 28 at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta. In the follow-up to their memorable but anticlimactic UFC 211 encounter a little more than a year ago, Alvarez succumbed to blows 4:05 into Round 2. Again, their battle was not without controversy. Alvarez scrambled to the Lafayette, Louisiana, native’s back in the second round and secured a neck crank before taking a seated position in full mount at the base of the cage. An ill-advised 12-to-6 elbow to the shoulder cost Alvarez his dominant spot and necessitated a letter-of-the-law warning from referee Marc Goddard . Poirier let go with a blistering kitchen-sink salvo after the restart that left his counterpart in a compromised state and necessitated the stoppage.
