Junior dos Santos Pulled From UFC 215 Due to Potential Anti-Doping Violation
Former heavyweight champion Junior dos
Santos has been removed from a UFC 215 matchup with Francis
Ngannou due to a possible anti-doping violation.
Dos Santos’ failed test stems from an out-of-competition sample
collected on Aug. 10. “Cigano” was pulled from UFC 215 “due to the
close proximity” of his scheduled bout with Ngannou. The UFC is
currently seeking a replacement opponent for Ngannou, according to
a statement.
I'm very very angry!!!
Almost done with training camp and they just announced that my
opponent is out for #ufc215
— Francis NGannou (@francis_ngannou) August
18, 2017
As usual, USADA will handle the results management and appropriate
adjudication of the dos Santos case. The 33-year-old Brazilian is
entitled to a full review process before any sanctions are imposed.
The substance for which dos Santos tested positive was not
revealed.
Dos Santos' management issued a statement to
MMAjunkie.com denying any use of performance enhancing
drugs.
“We are still trying to understand the test results, so that we can
investigate and determine what happened,” the statement read.

Welterweights Stephen Thompson, Jorge Masvidal to Clash at UFC 217 in New York
A showdown between welterweight contenders Stephen
Thompson and Jorge
Masvidal is set for
UFC 217 in New York on Nov. 4.
Multiple outlets have confirmed the pairing following an initial
report from
MMAFighting.com . UFC 217 takes place at Madison Square Garden
in New York and is headlined by a middleweight championship tilt
between Michael
Bisping and Georges St.
Pierre .
Thompson recently came up short in two bids to claim 170-pound
gold, battling reigning champion Tyron
Woodley to a majority draw at UFC 205 before falling to Woodley
via majority decision in their rematch at UFC 209. Prior to that
“Wonderboy” authored a seven-fight winning streak to earn his shot
at the welterweight title.
Masvidal, meanwhile, is coming off a split-decision loss to
Demian
Maia at UFC 211 on May 13. That snapped a three-fight winning
streak for “Gamebred,” who had bested Donald
Cerrone , Jake
Ellenberger and Ross
Pearson in succession inside the Octagon.

Francis Ngannou Calls Out Alistair Overeem for Short Notice Fight at UFC 215
Now that Junior dos
Santos is
sidelined due to a potential anti-doping violation, Francis
Ngannou needs an opponent at UFC 215 . The
surging Frenchman already has someone in mind.
“[ Alistair
Overeem ] been mentioning my name everywhere,” Ngannou wrote on
Twitter. “I’m now open and free for you guy. Let’s do this at [UFC

@Alistairovereem been

— Francis NGannou (@francis_ngannou) August

UFC 215 is three weeks away, and while the promotion is searching
for a replacement foe for Ngannou, it is unclear if Overeem would
be willing to take such a high-profile bout on short notice. The
Jackson-Wink MMA product last appeared at UFC 213, where he
captured a majority decision against Fabricio
Werdum . Overeem has won six of his last seven in the Octagon
overall, with his only defeat coming in a title bout against
Stipe
Miocic at UFC 203.
The 30-year-old Ngannou is currently riding a nine-fight winning
streak.

5 Things You Might Not Know About Francis Ngannou
Francis
Ngannou serves as an exception to the rule in a thinning and
aging weight class all but devoid of young talent. Many view him as
an heir to the heavyweight throne.
The fast-rising contender was expected to meet former
Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight titleholder Junior dos
Santos at UFC
215 on Sept. 9 in Edmonton, Alberta. However, dos Santos was
flagged for a potential violation in a pre-fight drug test
administered by the United States Anti-Doping Agency, resulting in
his removal from the card and leaving Ngannou without a dance
partner. Now, the MMA world awaits word on a replacement. Ngannou
has compiled a 5-0 record since joining the UFC roster in December
2015, rattling off consecutive victories over
Luis Henrique Barbosa de Oliveira , Curtis
Blaydes , Bojan Mihalovic, Anthony
Hamilton and Andrei
Arlovski . The quality of his performances has only improved as
the level of competition has increased -- a promising sign for a
30-year-old heavyweight who has been fighting professional for less
than four years.

Opinion: How Did Kevin Lee Land Shot at Interim Title at UFC 216?

UFC President Dana
White this week announced that the Ultimate
Ultimate Fighting Championship would promote an interim
lightweight title fight between the second-ranked Tony
Ferguson and seventh-ranked Kevin Lee at
UFC
216 on Oct. 7 in Las Vegas. There was some immediate backlash
from people who wondered how Lee, whose only win against ranked
competition came against Michael
Chiesa , ended up in the title picture at 155 pounds.
Well, here’s how this happened.
Khabib
Nurmagomedov was the most glaring omission as it relates to
this title fight. The UFC ranks the undefeated Dagestani grappler
as the No. 1 contender in the lightweight division and the No. 12
pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Nurmagomedov should be in the
title picture, right? Not really. His 24-0 record clearly warrants
an opportunity, but he has struggled with the scale in the past and
was forced to withdraw from his scheduled showdown with Ferguson at
UFC 209 less than 24 hours before the event due to a failed weight
cut.

Opinion: A Mir-ror and a Map For All MMA Modernity

For a time just a few short years ago, it seemed like Frank Mir might
be one of the few fighters who spent nearly his entire career in
the
Ultimate Fighting Championship and would hang up his gloves
under UFC employ. Alas, the MMA world moves swiftly and
unpredictably. The writing has been on the Octagon wall since Mir
was knocked out by Mark Hunt in
March 2016 and failed a U.S. Anti-Doping Agency test for turinabol
metabolites. When the company officially released him on July 9, it
ended a 16-year run with the promotion; Mir was on the roster for
5,727 consecutive days, the longest sustained run in UFC
history.
Even still, as imminent and obvious as it was, the phrase “Bellator
MMA heavyweight Frank Mir” rings strange. No, not strange as in
unexpected -- like I said, this signing was a foregone conclusion
-- but strange in the sense of being quaint and remarkable.

Could McGregor actually win? How the hype shifted to get us all to ask the same question
That was enough to grab a few headlines, especially when the material got more and more questionable, but it wasn’t going to be enough to sell us this fight. Not when the perceived skill gap was wide enough to drive a fleet of Mayweather’s Bentleys through. Arlovski, an honorable mention in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA heavyweight rankings , will attempt to snap a five-fight losing skid in the upcoming fight. Although the majority of his defeats in that stretch have come against the likes of Stipe Miocic, Alistair Overeem, Josh Barnett and Francis Ngannou, the former UFC titleholder is coming off a unanimous decision loss to a lesser-known foe in Marcin Tybura at UFC Fight Night 111 in June.

Artem Lobov vs. Andre Fili Showdown Booked for UFC Fight Night 118 in Poland
Artem
Lobov will lock horns with Andre Fili in
a featherweight tilt at UFC
Fight Night 118 .
Promotion officials announced the pairing on Friday. UFC Fight
Night 118 takes place in Gdansk, Poland, on Oct. 21 and will stream
on UFC Fight Pass. A headliner has not been announced for the
event.
Lobov had a two-fight winning streak halted in his most recent
outing at UFC Fight Night 108, as he lost a five-round verdict to
Cub
Swanson in the evening’s headliner on April 22. However, the
SBG Ireland representative gained a measure of respect by going the
distance with a top featherweight contender in an entertaining
battle.
A member of Team Alpha Male, Fili has alternated wins and losses
through his first eight Octagon appearances. Most recently, he
suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Calvin
Kattar at UFC 214 on July 29.

Garry Tonon Outpoints Rival Dillon Danis in Polaris 5 Main Event
When the two first locked horns back at ADCC 2015, Garry Tonon
and Dillon
Danis weren’t exactly the best of friends. A heel hook
submission for Tonon occurred that day and in the two years leading
up to their Polaris 5 main event battle inside Indigo at O2 Arena
in London, there certainly weren’t any changes of heart in their
UFC Fight Pass-televised battle.
Tonon was amped to submit his rival again and “The Lion Killer” was
relentless with his attacks. He repeatedly had Dillon on the
defensive with a cornucopia of leg locks. Whether it was the heel
hook, the toe fold or the straight knee bar, Tonon did everything
he could to force the tap. To his credit, Danis never succumbed to
the submissions but he was never able to get his own offense going.
For that reason alone, all three matside judges favored Tonon, who
won via unanimous decision.
Longtime mixed martial arts veteran Jake Shields
did just enough to eke past Dan Strauss in the Polaris 5
co-feature, though the fight wasn’t aesthetically pleasing. Shields
took the bulkier Brit down early but was stuck in Strauss’ guard
throughout.
