Infographic: Professional Fighters League Season 1 Welterweight Playoff Standings Update

The Professional Fighters League welterweight division is a microcosm of the league as a whole, offering sizzling knockouts, a breakout star and more than a little chaos and confusion. Now that Thursday’s PFL 6 is out of the way, let’s pick through the rubble. The breakout star, of course, is Ray Cooper III , who followed up his upset of Jake Shields last month by knocking out Pavel Kusch in 18 seconds on Thursday. By smoking the powerful Kusch, Cooper secured the top seed in the welterweight playoffs and cemented himself as the signature story of the entire season so far. Just behind Cooper sits Joao Zeferino , who slid only one spot in the standings after taking care of business with a third-round submission win over Yuri Villefort . Shields, recipient of the aforementioned upset loss to Cooper, did enough to lock down his own playoff berth with a typically workmanlike decision win over Herman Terrado , while Rick Story took full advantage of his matchup with newcomer Carlton Minus , choking the Alaskan unconscious in the second round and vaulting himself into the fourth seed.

Source: Brennan Ward, Andre Fialho Middleweight Scrap Booked for Bellator 207

Bellator MMA heavy hitters Brennan Ward (14-6) and Andre Fialho (9-1) will square off in a 185-pound duel on the main card of Bellator 207 on Oct. 12 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. A source close to the pairing confirmed the bout to Sherdog.com Thursday evening. Ward, 30, of nearby Waterford, Connecticut, will look to get back in the win column following back-to-back losses to Fernando Gonzalez and Paul Daley . He was finished convincingly in each defeat. Fialho, an American Kickboxing Academy prospect, bounced back from his first career setback by edging A.J. Matthews in his last action in July of 2017. The 24 year-old from Portugal is 3-1 in the Bellator cage, with his lone defeat coming by way of an early knockout courtesy of Chidi Njokuani . Bellator 207 will be headlined by a heavyweight tournament bout pitting Matt Mitrione against Ryan Bader and will also feature another clash of big men in Roy Nelson versus Pride Fighting Championships vet Sergei Kharitonov .

Bellator 204 results: Champ Darrion Caldwell completes first step in dual-title quest

Caldwell was quick to take the fight to the floor again in the second, immediately setting up in a familiar position. Lahat was able to work to his knees in an attempt to escape, but the threat of exposing his neck meant he had to tuck himself back down. Caldwell sensed the opportunity to attack and start raining down punches. Lahat tried to move, but the punches continued to land, and when he went briefly limp, the contest was called off at the 2:46 mark of the frame.

UFC 229 Tickets Sell Out Within 3 Minutes in Anticipation of McGregor's UFC Return

Three minutes was all it took... #UFC229 pic.twitter.com/iUdePPDZUa — UFC on BT Sport (@btsportufc) August 17, 2018 UFC 229 sold out within three minutes after tickets went on sale this week, likely due to the return of Conor McGregor . “The Notorious” is set to take on Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in an effort to reclaim the belt McGregor won at UFC 205 back in 2016. McGregor hasn’t stepped foot in the Octagon since then, but did take a detour into boxing last summer in a losing effort to undefeated legend Floyd Mayweather . McGregor was eventually stripped of both the featherweight and lightweight titles during his extended hiatus from MMA. The appetite for McGregor’s UFC return is palpable, and the numbers already show extreme interest, with tickets for the Las Vegas event selling out in three minutes flat. “It’s pretty clear that fans have a huge appetite to see Conor McGregor’s return,” Vivid Seats Director Cate Kelly told MMAjunkie. Tickets for UFC 229 went on sale Wednesday, with UFC Fight Club members first in line for tickets, at prices starting at $205 for the cheap seats and going all the way up to $2,505.

Daniel Cormier Sends Message to Brock Lesnar Following Defeat at WWE’s SummerSlam

Daniel Cormier doesn’t hide the fact that he’s a professional wrestling fan, and he had even more incentive than usual to watch WWE’s SummerSlam on Sunday night. That’s because his next potential foe in the Octagon, Brock Lesnar , was in action at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Lesnar would eventually lose his WWE Universal title to Roman Reigns on Sunday, ending a 504-day reign as champion. The result should not be surprising, as Lesnar is expected to return to the UFC and challenge Cormier for the heavyweight belt sometime in 2019. The two men had a confrontation in the Octagon following Cormier’s triumph over Stipe Miocic at UFC 226 in July. “DC” sent a message to Lesnar on Sunday night, predicting a similar result when they square off in the Las Vegas-based promotion. “No more title, now he can come and chase mine,” Cormier wrote on Twitter. “Sorry [Brock Lesnar], result will be the same.” No more title now he can come and chase mine!!!! Sorry @BrockLesnar result will be the same!!!! — Daniel Cormier (@dc_mma) August 20, 2018 Cormier also commented on Lesnar’s physique, which is generally more massive in the sports entertainment realm.

Everything You Need to Know About the Weekend in Boxing

Who did it better, @Tyson_Fury or Muhammad Ali? #FuryPianeta pic.twitter.com/lis8phGDf6 — Ryan Songalia (@ryansongalia) August 18, 2018 Tyson Fury versus Deontay Wilder is officially happening. After cruising to an uneventful decision victory over Italy’s Francesco Pianeta , the sole highlight of which was when the self-proclaimed “heavyweight Sugar Ray Leonard” did his best impression of Muhammed Ali’s famous cornered head movement routine , Wilder stormed the ring and the two undefeated heavyweights came face to face. Both fighters acknowledged that the deal was already in place , before Fury promised with some colorful language that he was going to knock Wilder out. That is highly unlikely, as despite his size Fury has never been a knockout puncher (19 knockouts in 27 fights). Instead, this is a classic boxer-puncher matchup with Fury’s size, movement and boxing ability facing off against Wilder’s right hand from Hell. For boxing fans, this long-time coming battle will be fascinating but because of the outsized personalities of the pugilists involved, it will likely enthrall a casual audience as well.

It Ain’t a Gimmick If It Works

It’s fair to say that the promotional model employed by the Ultimate Fighting Championship is the predominant one in the sport today. From the UFC itself down to the humblest of regional organizations putting on events in gyms and bars, most promotions offer some variation on the same basic model. It’s built around a few bedrock principles: former matchmaker Joe Silva’s mantra that winners fight winners, a high value placed on championship belts, a distaste for formal bracket-based tournaments and, until recently, a reluctance to have fighters change divisions or fight outside their usual weight class. In theory, it makes the UFC a constant, ongoing tournament, with the goal of figuring out who are the best fighters in each division and having them challenge for the belt. When it works -- when the UFC isn’t undermining its own competitive process with cash-grab matchmaking -- it works well. It makes for a system that gives fans time to get to know fighters and can often respond well to the unexpected. If a title challenger is suddenly injured, for example, it’s helpful if the rest of the Top 10 is full of credible contenders who have been working their way up and at least half of them are coming off of wins in their last fight.

Luke Rockhold Happy to Fight Weidman at UFC 230 But Needs 'The Right Contract'

It has been reported for a number of weeks now that a matchup between former Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight champions Luke Rockhold and Chris Weidman was in the works for UFC 230 in November at Madison Square Garden, New York although nothing has been made official yet. The pair previously met back in December 2015 at UFC 194 where Rockhold knocked out then-champion Weidman. Weidman has been sidelined for over a year now with a nagging injury as a result of a torn ligament he suffered in his thumb. “The All-American” last featured inside the Octagon in July 2017 where he snapped a three-fight losing streak by defeating Kelvin Gastelum . Rockhold last fought back in February at UFC 221 for the interim UFC middleweight title against Yoel Romero . Romero missed weight for the fight ruling him out of contention for the title but managed to put the disappointment behind him to knock out Rockhold in the third round. Rockhold spoke to reporters at an event with his sponsor American Ethanol and said the only reason he’s not already signed a rematch bout against Weidman in November is because he wants a better contract (via MMAJunkie.

Stream #FuryPianeta TOMORROW 3:30PM ET: https://t.co/tJ6k57d8UU pic.twitter.com/uek56T0qGN — SHOWTIME Boxing (@ShowtimeBoxing) August 17, 2018 Sherdog's resident boxing expert, James Kinneen , breaks down an upcoming weekend with plenty of can't-miss fights. What: Andrew Cancio vs. Dardan Zenunaj, Junior lightweights When: Aug. 17 How to Watch: ESPN 2, 11 p.m. ET Why You Should Care: Because Dardan Zenunaj wants to make a “ Mickey Ward-Arturo Gatti type of fight ” and Andrew Cancio is more than happy to oblige. Not every fight needs to have hall of fame or even pound-for-pound implications, some fights are just great, because they’re great fights. That may well be the case when it comes to Friday’s matchup between Andrew Cancio (18-4) and Dardan Zenunaj (14-4). Although neither fighter is likely going to be remembered as an all-time great, Cancio has faced the better opposition having lost to guys like Jojo Diaz but beaten guys like Rocky Juarez . But, that likely won’t mean much. See, Zenunaj has shown he can be outboxed, but has vowed he will come forward against Cancio, who is probably not slick enough to keep him away for long.

Ray Cooper III Evaporates Pavel Kusch in PFL 6 Headliner

18 SECONDS! Ray Cooper III ends it in a hurry and locks up the top seed at welterweight. #PFL6 #PFLmma pic.twitter.com/CDR3KtOJB4 — #PFLmma (@ProFightLeague) August 17, 2018 Ray Cooper III proved to be the far superior welterweight when he torched Pavel Kusch in the main event of PFL 6 on Thursday night inside Ocean Resort Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. “Bradda Boy” stormed out of his corner like a wolverine and tore into the Ukrainian with a maelstrom of punches to the head. Kusch (23-6) was caught off-guard and never recovered; his legs eventually turned to gelatin and his consciousness effectively removed from the onslaught of fists. Cooper III never stopped throwing bombs until referee Keith Peterson finally intervened, ending the blitzkrieg in just 18 seconds. The sensational knockout win allowed the Hawaiian to not only rise to 15-4, but also clinched the number-one seed in the 2018 PFL Playoffs at welterweight with six points earned. Magomed Magomedkerimov bolstered his pro ledger to 20-5 by toppling Serbia’s Bojan Velickovic over three rounds.

Logan Storley: Staying Patient, Staying Perfect

It would be easy to guess that Logan Storley was a former All-American wrestler even if one didn’t already know. The telltale signs are all over the way the undefeated Bellator MMA welterweight talks about himself and his mixed martial arts career -- sincere and completely without pretense. But if “Storm” has no interest in boasting or trash talk, he does not care for false modesty either. Leading up to his fight with A.J. Matthews in the co-main event of Bellator 204 on Friday, the 25-year-old South Dakota native knows what he’s good at and is perfectly willing to claim it. “I know that with pretty much everybody in the 170-pound division in the world, I can dictate where the fight takes place,” Storley told Sherdog.com. That might seem like a bold or even reckless statement, since the welterweight division is a hotbed of accomplished wrestlers, some of which come to MMA with amateur credentials superior to Storley’s own. However, the nuance of Storley’s explanation shows that he may have good reason to believe as he does.

5 Things You Might Not Know About Darrion Caldwell

Darrion Caldwell , 30, boasts an impressive 12-1 professional record and will ride a three-fight winning streak into his latest assignment, as the reigning Bellator MMA bantamweight champion moves up to 145 pounds to face Noad Lahat in the Bellator 204 main event on Friday at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Ahead of Caldwell’s showdown with Lahat, here are five things you might not know about him: 1. He is a talented sportsman. Caldwell excelled at baseball and football at Rahway High School in Rahway, New Jersey, but the wrestling Mat was where he really shined. He was a three-time state champion, compiled a 146-4 record and lost only one match in his final three years of high school. Caldwell went on to become an All-American at North Carolina State University, where he completed his career with a remarkable 109-13 record. During his 2008-09 campaign, he finished with a 38-1 mark on his way to becoming an NCAA champion at 149 pounds. 2. He is a fan of the suplex. Caldwell utilizes numerous techniques from his amateur wrestling background in the cage.

Darrion Caldwell: 5 Defining Moments

Reigning Bellator MMA champion Darrion Caldwell will let his title rest on his mantle, as he moves up to 145 pounds to challenge Noad Lahat in the Bellator 204 main event on Friday at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. A convincing win over Lahat could potentially set the stage for a champion-versus-champion superfight against featherweight titleholder Patricio Freire . Ahead of Caldwell’s showdown with Lahat, here are five moments that have come to define him: 1. The Big Stage Caldwell was an undefeated prospect with a 3-0 record when he made his promotional debut against Lance Surma as a featherweight at Bellator 112 on March 14, 2014. When the onetime NCAA wrestling champion attempted a flying knee in the first round, it became apparent that he was not going to be fazed by the big stage. Caldwell was still in the air when he grabbed his opponent’s head in the clinch and landed a knee to the body. Surma caught the Rahway, New Jersey, native’s leg, picked him up and dumped him to the mat. However, Caldwell secured a guillotine choke, stood and kept squeezing until the overmatched Surma bowed out a mere 50 seconds into the match.

Twitter Mailbag: How much longer can Jon Jones' USADA limbo possibly last?

Jiu-jitsu is still a great art, and on some level a necessary one at every level of MMA. Trouble is, it’s so necessary that these days everyone knows it. It has to be paired with another art to make it effective. You either need great takedowns to help you get to a place where you can put your jiu-jitsu to work, or else you need great striking that will force someone else to try to take it there for you.

Veteran Coach Andre Pederneiras Provides Insight on UFC 229 Nurmagomedov-McGregor Scrap

THE FIGHT IS ON!@TeamKhabib vs @TheNotoriousMMA Oct. 6 in Las Vegas at #UFC229! pic.twitter.com/GHNzmj4eWY — #UFC227 (@ufc) August 3, 2018 When former Ultimate Fighting Championship dual-division champion Conor McGregor was interviewed by TMZ days after Jose Aldo ’s stoppage victory over Jeremy Stephens , fans were surprised when the Irishman gave the Brazilian a glowing praise and said he was “so happy” for him and his coach Andre Pederneiras . The comments didn’t surprise Pederneiras, who is very familiar with McGregor when the Irishman and Aldo met back in 2015 at UFC 194. The fight lasted only 13 seconds via a knockout. However many fans believed the constant sledging during the world tour by “The Notorious” had completely sapped the Brazilian and the fight had already been won before it started. Pederneiras told the media recently in his training center in Rio de Janeiro that McGregor’s recent comments towards Aldo show who he really is as a person and all his antics -- including the bus attack -- is purely for show ( via MMAfighting.com ): ”That’s him being the artist, in my opinion,” Pederneiras said.
