Max Holloway: No title shot talk because Charles Oliveira has all my attention

"I think about it all the time — when I don't have an opponent," Holloway told FOX Sports when asked about fighting for the belt. "When I'm in camp, I never let my mind wander and think about what's next. Once I get a fight, my attention is on that guy. I don't care what the hell is going on in the division. I've got my mind on that one guy and that's the guy I have to beat. He's got to have all my attention.

One (Metallica) Arranged for Uke!

An all-ukulele cover of the Metallica classic 'One'! This was by far the most difficult cover I've done. It's long, it's intricate and devilishly fast at the end. The whole process of tabbing, learning, playing, and finally editing this monstrosity took me the better part of two weeks. I'm pretty pleased with the final result. There's still a few bits I wish I'd played a little cleaner. Full disclosure: I actually couldn't pull off a clean take of the main solo, no matter how hard I tried. By the time I realized this, I had already put a lot of work into the rest of the song, so I decided to record it at 80% and speed it back up in post, rather than shelve the song. A cheat, for sure, but the song sounds better for it. Plus I've heard that Kirk Hammet has done the same thing on a few Metallica albums, so I don't feel too bad. Here's an MP3 for you kids and your eye-pods and walkman-type thinga-ma-jigs: http://ukesofhazzard.com/mp3s/Hazzmax... Alan Watts ~ Society Is A Hoax , Take Control Of Your Life

Listening is an action in which the miracle of understanding takes place If I may turn aside for a moment, I think it is important to understand what it means to listen, for then, perhaps, what is being said will have a meaning beyond the words. It seems to me that very few of us ever do listen. We do not know how to listen. I wonder if you have ever really listened to your child, to your wife or husband, or to a bird? I wonder if you have ever listened to the mind as it watches a sunset, or if you have read a poem with an attitude of listening? If we know how to listen, that very listening is an action in which the miracle of understanding takes place. If we know how to listen to what is being said, we shall discover whether it is true or false. And what is true, one does not have to accept: it is so. It is only when there is contention between the false and the false that there is acceptance and rejection, agreement and disagreement. Jiddu Krishnamurti

Forget the Blue Jays, Cirkunov Could Be Toronto's Next Great Sports Hope | FIGHTLAND

Is a struggle to balance teaching and fighting at all? I think it’s one of the best ways to learn. Sometimes I have many beginners show up, sometimes I have more experienced guys show up. Sometimes I have guys from Europe from, England, from Russia, from Ukraine, they come in and they check out Xtreme Couture. So I’ve been training with a little bit of everyone. It helps to train with many different people because it opens up my eyes and I kind of see a lot. I have a lot of people ask me different questions and you always have to answer those questions. So it keeps you sharp all the time, and I find the balance works really great. Randy Couture used to do the same thing back in the day, he used to teach as well.

The Permanent Scars of Mirsad Bektic - A Great Escape

Mirsad Bektic owns a perfect 10-0 record. | Photo: Gleidson Venga/Sherdog.com Mirsad Bektic walked softly through the garden of pointed white markers that dotted the rolling lush emerald hills of Srebrenica, a small mountain town in Bosnia. Every few steps he would stop, squat down and paw at the engraved inscriptions, a pang of emotion pulling at his gut. Peering through squinty eyes, he saw the names of husbands, fathers, brothers, sons and children. Some markers even had his surname on them -- a grim touchstone of his own possible plight. The rising Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight star was 18 when he last visited his home country. He felt compelled to see the Potočari genocide memorial, a converted cemetery which serves as a small sample size of Auschwitz, Treblinka or Dachau, since the very ground he was treading was once a mass grave and a poignant reminder of a time, a place and an atrocity the world once ignored. When his people were being wiped out -- some say 8,000 died, some say more -- through wholesale systematic genocide termed “ethnic cleansing” in 1995, no one came to the aid of the Muslim community to which Bektic and his family belonged.

Tamdan McCrory Re-Signs with UFC; ‘Barn Cat’ Says He Left Behind Bellator Title Shot

Tamdan McCrory finished his last two bouts in a combined 87 seconds. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com Six years after his last Octagon appearance, Tamdan McCrory is back with the Ultimate Fighting Championship . The Las Vegas-based organization on Tuesday announced that it has inked the 6-foot-4 middleweight to a new contract, the specifics of which were not disclosed. According to a post on UFC.com, McCrory will return to the cage “sometime in October or November” against an as-yet-unannounced opponent. McCrory, 28, went 3-3 in his first UFC run between June 2007 and August 2009. The New Yorker’s last bout with the promotion came at UFC 101 , where he dropped a split decision to John Howard . Following that defeat, McCrory disappeared from the sport for more than five years while coaching and dealing with a host of injuries. When “The Barn Cat” returned in September 2014, it was under the banner of UFC rival Bellator MMA . Already a cult figure to fight fans, McCrory got people talking when he scored a blistering, 21-second knockout of Brennan Ward .

Jardine Pounds Lofton, Holm Hot in MMA Debut at 'Double Threat'

Keith Jardine won in front of his Albuquerque crowd Friday night. | Daniel Archuleta/Sherdog.com ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- For Keith Jardine , it was another step on the road back to the UFC. For Holly "Hottie" Holm , it was a rousing beginning to her mixed martial arts career. Both Jardine and Holm were victorious in their co-featured bouts as part of Fresquez Productions' "Double Threat" at the Route 66 Casino in Albuquerque on Friday night. Jardine earned a stoppage victory over Austin, Texas' Aron Lofton at 3:30 of the opening round in their light heavyweight match. Meanwhile, Holm staggered Wisconsin native Christina "Machine Gun" Domke with leg kicks throughout their 135-pound tussle, the last of which left the Wisconsin native unable to stand, giving the boxing star a knockout triumph at 3:58 of the second round in the night’s co-feature. Jardine has been known for his tendency to engage in striking wars in recent bouts, but in the first fight in his hometown since 2004, "The Dean of Mean" took a different approach.

‘Rumble’ Johnson Directs Facebook Rant at Woman After Gym Altercation, Then Apologizes

Anthony Johnson apologized on Wednesday for an angry Facebook post. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com Anthony Johnson recently took to social media to rant at a women from his gym who apparently attempted to stretch in an area where the UFC fighter was lifting weights. Johnson’s full post is as follows: To the ugly girl in the gym built like a bag of dog food, this is for you. If you get in my way or any other [athlete’s] way again I’ll throw your yoga mat across the gym AGAIN. Who in their right mind stretches where [people] are supposed to lift? Don’t ever run your mouth at me again you won’t win that battle I will. Talking about it was rude that I lifted next to you while you were stretching. Sherdog.com’s 2014 Submission of the Year - Sub of the Year

As we reach the end of 2014, grappling in MMA is in a strange place. Far fewer fights end with a tapout than they did a decade ago -- 18.8 percent of Ultimate Fighting Championship fights in 2014 and 17 percent in 2013, compared to 25.9 percent between 2004 and 2010 -- and that number does not look to be changing anytime soon. Many factors contribute to this phenomenon, namely the higher overall grappling ability and the drastic increase in wrestling skill that have taken hold in the UFC. Simply put, it is harder today to get someone down, keep them there and work a successful submission. Counter-wrestling and counter-grappling have advanced much further, much quicker than their offensive counterparts. Grappling-first fighters have been forced to adapt. Rather than the methodical takedown-pass-mount-submit formula of the old days, the present-day MMA game places much more emphasis on latching onto holds in scrambles. Judging generally does not reward patient work from the bottom, so more and more coaches are preaching a “sweep, submit or get up” approach or what Tristar Gym impresario Firas Zahabi calls the 60-second guard .

Michael Bisping vs. Robert Whittaker Middleweight Matchup Added to UFC 193

Michael Bisping is still hunting for a UFC title shot. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com The fight card for UFC 193 continues to grow, as Ultimate Fighting Championship on Wednesday announced a middleweight tussle between Michael Bisping and Robert Whittaker . Set to be held at the massive Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia, UFC 193 will be headlined by a welterweight championship bout between Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit . After struggling through a topsy-turvy win-loss record for two years, Bisping has finally righted the ship. “The Count” has won his last two bouts, besting both C.B. Dollaway and, most recently, Thales Leites via decision. Constantly in the hunt for the UFC’s 185-pound title, the Englishman can ill-afford a loss at this juncture of his career. Australia’s Whittaker has looked sensational as of late, scoring three consecutive wins, all in spectacular fashion. He stopped Clint Hester in the second round in November and followed that up with a first-round destruction of perennial contender Brad Tavares in May.

Bellator MMA Inks Heavyweight Olympic Hopeful Tyrell Fortune to Multi-Fight Deal

Bellator MMA has added another prospect to its talent pool with the signing of 2016 Summer Olympics hopeful Tyrell Fortune to an exclusive, multi-fight contract. Promotion officials announced the deal on Tuesday. Fortune, 25, will attempt to qualify for the 2016 U.S. Olympic wrestling team during trials next April. Even if he makes the team, Fortune still has designs on making his MMA debut early in 2016, according to a release. "Wrestling in the Olympics and representing the United States of America has always been a dream of mine,” Fortune said. “Now that the dream is nearly a reality, I have taken the necessary steps to make sure I’m able to provide for myself going forward and there’s no better place to do that than with Scott Coker and Bellator MMA. I can’t wait to show the heavyweight division what I can do inside the cage and I look forward to being one of the names that continues to propel Bellator MMA to the top of the mixed martial arts landscape.” Fortune excelled as a collegiate wrestler, winning two juco national titles and an NCAA Division II championship.

Ewerton Teixeira-Vinicius ‘Spartan’ Heavyweight Tilt Completes Bellator 143 Main Draw

Vinicius Kappke de Queiroz has been out of action for nearly two years. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com A heavyweight contest pitting Ewerton Teixeira against Vinicius Kappke de Queiroz will be the final main card bout at Bellator 143 . Promotion officials announced the pairing on Wednesday. Bellator 143 takes place at State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas, and is headlined by a bantamweight showdown between Joe Warren and L.C. Davis . The evening’s main card airs on Spike TV beginning 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT. An accomplished kickboxing standout, Teixeira will make his Bellator debut with a 3-0 record in MMA. The 33-year-old Brazilian has a more notable resume on the kickboxing circuit, however, winning the K-1 World Grand Prix in 2008 and earning wins over Errol Zimmerman and Jerome Le Banner . He was also brutally knocked out by an Alistair Overeem knee to the chin in a 2009 K-1 contest. Quieroz, who is more commonly known as Vinicius “Spartan,” has not competed since October 2013, when he scored a 23-second knockout of Lavar Johnson at Bellator 102.

Jessica Andrade Replaces Liz Carmouche, Rematches Raquel Pennington at UFC 191

Raquel Pennington and Jessica Andrade will meet again. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight Raquel Pennington has another new opponent for her bout at UFC 191 . Originally slated to take on Leslie Smith , and then Liz Carmouche , Pennington will instead engage in a rematch with old rival Jessica Andrade . UFC officials on Wednesday announced that Andrade agreed to fill in for the injured Carmouche on little more than two weeks’ notice. At the pair’s first meeting in March 2014, Andrade earned a three-round split decision over Pennington on the undercard of UFC 171 . Andrade has won four of her last five bouts, with her last contest being a unanimous decision victory over Sarah Moras on July 15. Pennington, who turns 27 on Sept. 5, has alternated wins and losses since coming to the UFC, though both of her defeats have been courtesy of razor-thin split decisions. The Coloradan is coming off a hotly contested loss to unbeaten former boxing and kickboxing champion Holly Holm at UFC 184.
