UFC 202 medical suspensions: McGregor needs clearance on left foot to avoid six-month term

McGregor was given a possible six-month term that can be waived early if he’s given clearance from an orthopedic doctor on concerns of injury to his left foot and ankle. McGregor used crutches to assist his arrival and departure from Saturday’s post-fight media session, though he told MMAjunkie that there was no fracture and that his shin was simply sore from the numerous leg kicks delivered to Nate Diaz (19-11 MMA, 14-9 UFC).

Daniel Cormier: ‘Rumble’ Johnson, Not Jon Jones, Next for 205-Pound Title Shot

After Saturday night, it’s hard to deny Anthony Johnson a second chance at UFC gold. In a battle of light heavyweight contenders, “Rumble” confirmed his reputation as arguably the scariest man in the division by knocking out Glover Teixeira with an uppercut 13 seconds into their co-headlining encounter at UFC 202 . “I told my coach this morning if I was gonna knock out Glover it was going to be by uppercut, and it worked out perfectly,” Johnson said during an interview on Fox Sports 1. “My fighting style and his fighting style, I just knew that the speed and power would be there for me and that he would make a mistake. And he did.” That makes three straight knockout victories for Johnson since he fell to current light heavyweight king Daniel Cormier for the vacant belt at UFC 187 last year. Even Cormier admits that the Blackzilians standout has earned a rematch. “I thought Rumble would win; I thought he would knock him out. I didn’t think it would be that fast, but that’s what Rumble does, man. He’s a great fighter,” Cormier said.

Beating the Odds: UFC 202

Oddsmakers might want to think twice about installing Lorenz Larkin as an underdog again, no matter the circumstances. The Millennia MMA welterweight recorded his fourth win in five appearances, as he filled in for an injured Dong Hyun Kim and put away Neil Magny with first-round elbows at UFC 202 “Diaz vs. McGregor 2” on Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Magny was a -150 favorite, per, but Larkin (+125) paid no mind to the odds and closed out “The Ultimate Fighter 16” semifinalist 4:08 into round one. “The Monsoon” was dominant from start to finish. He staggered Magny with standing elbows in the clinch and chopped away at his lead leg with fast, powerful kicks. Late in the first round, Larkin sprawled out of a desperate takedown attempt, braced himself on the cage and unleashed elbows to the side of the stooped Magny’s exposed head. Newcomer Mike Perry (+230) stole some of Larkin’s thunder on the main card, as he blitzed Hyun Gyu Lim with punches and made quite the first impression as a short-notice replacement for Sultan Aliev .

Full UFC 202 salaries: McGregor, Diaz get $5 million of $6.1 million total payout

More than $6 million in disclosed pay was dished out at Saturday’s UFC 202 event, and the headliners took the lion’s share of it.

Conor McGregor confirms shin injury but no broken foot from Nate Diaz rematch

"This time you have to hit the legs on him so we practiced leg kicks and I'll tell you what, he's got pretty good at checking them. He's able to handle the leg kicks now. He's a lot more seasoned with them. But I just kept kicking. I'm sure it set up some of the shots that I landed. I didn't just head hunt — I hit the leg, I hit the body, I didn't overload on my shots. I had some clean work in there tonight."

Donald Cerrone, Dana White Have Differing Views on Potential Return to Lightweight

If the end result is like this, Donald Cerrone probably wouldn’t mind having “off” days on fight night a little more frequently. Despite admittedly not feeling his best, “Cowboy” won his third straight bout at 170 pounds at UFC 202 on Saturday night, defeating Rick Story via technical knockout 2:02 into the second frame at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The Jackson-Wink MMA stalwart looked to be in top form from the beginning, but he really began to pick Story apart in the round two. There, Cerrone attacked with kicks to the legs and body as well as punches to the head to keep his opponent on the defensive before putting Story away with a multi-strike combination punctuated by a head kick and follow-up punches. “I woke up with the worst headache I’ve ever had in my life. Today was just one of those off days,” Cerrone said on Fox Sports 1. “I was telling my coach, ‘I don’t feel it. I don’t have the fire.’ We train everyday, you train to beat someone on your worst day. I was in the back just like grinding and trying to find first gear and just couldn’t do it.

Trading Shots: Should Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz complete the trilogy?

Sure, Diaz and McGregor want money, but that’s not all. What about a Diaz brother career arc has ever given you the impression that they are interested in playing the game and moving up the ladder? They like to fight. Now that McGregor has been afforded the comfort of some large paychecks, I think he’s in a similar position. He wants something that can motivate him. Maybe it’s his own pride, but that can be a greater motivator than any dollar amount.

Opinion: Mixed Martial Artistry

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * All great art is narrative in some way. Not that a piece of art needs to tell a story in order to be great, but what truly distinguishes something is its place in a larger context. While good art of any sort can be defined by the immediacy of its aesthetic, great art exists in narrative crosshairs that make it representative of something bigger than itself. It’s why classic paintings can capture a period of history as much as any account of facts or why our favorite songs tend to be the ones that bring us back to specific moments from our lives; they’re intertwined with the things going on around them in a fundamental, inseparable way. By any metric, Nate Diaz - Conor McGregor 2 at UFC 202 on Saturday was great art. It was a perfect blend of what we love about this sport, and it couldn’t have happened at a more perfect time.

UFC 202 Highlight Video: Watch Cortney Casey Tap Randa Markos

What a finish! @CastIron_Casey locks in an armbar from the bottom and submits Randa Markos! #UFC202 — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) August 21, 2016 After a disastrous start to her fight with Randa Markos where she was tossed and stuck in a tight judo scarf hold, Cortney Casey slowly inched her way out and turned the tides at UFC 202 . Casey exploded out of the scarf and seized Markos’ back and pounded her with elbows and punches. Markos tried to scramble to a better position, but Casey was too wise and quickly latched on an armbar and forced verbal submission. The official time of the submission came at 4:34 of the opening frame.

Matches to Make After UFC 202

It was by all accounts a classic. In a clear contender for “Fight of the Year,” Conor McGregor walked away from his UFC 202 rematch against Nate Diaz with a majority decision on Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The SBG Ireland superstar was rewarded for his efforts by judges Jeff Mullen and Derek Cleary, both of whom struck 48-47 scorecards in his favor; Glenn Trowbridge ruled it a 47-47 draw. It was also closely contested from a statistical standpoint. According to FightMetric data, Diaz connected with two more significant strikes, 166-164, than McGregor across five rounds of intense battle. However, the Irishman landed at a higher rate, 57 percent to 48 percent, and recorded the only three knockdowns of the fight, two of them in the decisive second round. As was evident to most observers, McGregor invested heavily in leg kicks: He found the mark with 40 of them, 27 in the first two rounds alone. Diaz made his most significant advances in rounds three and five, his sublime work in the middle stanza briefly but dramatically turning the tide in his favor.

By the Numbers: UFC 202

The sequel was even better than the original. Conor McGregor avenged a March loss to Nate Diaz in an epic rematch in the UFC 202 headliner at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night, capturing a hard-fought majority decision triumph. It wasn’t the customary McGregor victory, however, as he started quickly, then weathered a relentless Diaz to find a second wind down the stretch. With such a memorable five-round clash comes plenty of facts and figures to review. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 202, with statistics courtesy of Related » UFC 202 Bonuses: McGregor, Diaz, Johnson, Cerrone Receive $50K Awards 330: Combined significant strikes landed by McGregor (166) and Diaz (164), the second most significant strikes landed by two fighters in a UFC bout. UFC 202 Bonuses: McGregor, Diaz, Johnson, Cerrone Receive $50K Awards

Although the “Fight of the Night” bonus only represents a fraction of their total earnings at UFC 202 , for Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz , the honor was well deserved. McGregor and Diaz pocketed $50,000 apiece for their headlining welterweight bout at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Eventually, their rematch will likely be up for “Fight of the Year,” as well. McGregor stormed out of the gates, dropping his foe three times in the first two frames. Diaz rallied in typical fashion, however, and he kept the pressure on his opponent for the full 25 minutes. This time, McGregor had enough left in reserve to win a majority decision. Meanwhile, Anthony Johnson made a resounding case for another light heavyweight title shot against Daniel Cormier , as he knocked out Glover Teixeira in 13 seconds in the evening’s co-headliner. In addition to making a statement at 205 pounds, “Rumble” received a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for his powerful uppercut KO. Finally, Donald Cerrone continued his successful foray at 170 pounds, as he garnered the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” check for his second-round TKO of Rick Story in a featured contest.

The rising Team Alpha Male star needed less than a minute to cut down World Extreme Cagefighting veteran Takeya Mizugaki with punches in the featured UFC 202 “Diaz vs. McGregor 2” prelim on Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Mizugaki (21-10-2, 8-5 UFC) met his end just 48 seconds into round one. Conor McGregor not sold on Jose Aldo rematch; hints at opportunity outside the UFC

"How long was I going back and forth with Jose? That must have been a two-year build up. He pulled out last minute. I continued to fight someone else. Then we rescheduled, two-year round-the-world deal with that boy and then he stepped in and I beat him in 13 seconds," McGregor said following the close of UFC 202.  "It's hard for me to get excited about that, especially after his last performance. It was a decision, he didn't go out and get it. He didn't go out and get it like I wanted him to get it. So I don't know, we'll see.

Nate Diaz Says Knee, Rib Injuries Hindered Training Ahead of McGregor Rematch

A vacation in Mexico and only 10 days to prepare couldn’t stop Nate Diaz from defeating Conor McGregor at UFC 196. The second time around, the Stockton, Calif., native had a full camp to prepare for McGregor, but he came up short in the UFC 202 headliner, falling via majority decision in a fight that exceeded its considerable hype. Diaz appeared to have the Irishman reeling on a couple occasions in the bout, but ultimately McGregor was able to survive and improve upon his prior performance. Still, the Cesar Gracie protege thought he did enough to get the nod from the cageside judges at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. “I thought I won the fight. I got paid, so it’s all good,” said Diaz, who earned a disclosed $2 million in defeat. “He did a lot of running in that fight. He ran the whole fight. I feel like they should’ve took points for that. On top of me winning anyways, they should’ve took points, which wouldn’t have let him win the fight.” While Diaz did have more time to train for McGregor, his UFC 202 camp was not without its difficulties.
