Beating the Odds: UFC 202

Oddsmakers might want to think twice about installing Lorenz Larkin as an underdog again, no matter the circumstances. The Millennia MMA welterweight recorded his fourth win in five appearances, as he filled in for an injured Dong Hyun Kim and put away Neil Magny with first-round elbows at UFC 202 “Diaz vs. McGregor 2” on Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Magny was a -150 favorite, per BetDSI.com, but Larkin (+125) paid no mind to the odds and closed out “The Ultimate Fighter 16” semifinalist 4:08 into round one. “The Monsoon” was dominant from start to finish. He staggered Magny with standing elbows in the clinch and chopped away at his lead leg with fast, powerful kicks. Late in the first round, Larkin sprawled out of a desperate takedown attempt, braced himself on the cage and unleashed elbows to the side of the stooped Magny’s exposed head. Newcomer Mike Perry (+230) stole some of Larkin’s thunder on the main card, as he blitzed Hyun Gyu Lim with punches and made quite the first impression as a short-notice replacement for Sultan Aliev .

2 UFC 202 medical suspensions: McGregor needs clearance on left foot to avoid six-month term

McGregor was given a possible six-month term that can be waived early if he’s given clearance from an orthopedic doctor on concerns of injury to his left foot and ankle. McGregor used crutches to assist his arrival and departure from Saturday’s post-fight media session, though he told MMAjunkie that there was no fracture and that his shin was simply sore from the numerous leg kicks delivered to Nate Diaz (19-11 MMA, 14-9 UFC).

Opinion: Mixed Martial Artistry

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * All great art is narrative in some way. Not that a piece of art needs to tell a story in order to be great, but what truly distinguishes something is its place in a larger context. While good art of any sort can be defined by the immediacy of its aesthetic, great art exists in narrative crosshairs that make it representative of something bigger than itself. It’s why classic paintings can capture a period of history as much as any account of facts or why our favorite songs tend to be the ones that bring us back to specific moments from our lives; they’re intertwined with the things going on around them in a fundamental, inseparable way. By any metric, Nate Diaz - Conor McGregor 2 at UFC 202 on Saturday was great art. It was a perfect blend of what we love about this sport, and it couldn’t have happened at a more perfect time.

Conor McGregor Takes Majority Decision Off Nate Diaz in Remarkable UFC 202 Rematch

Conor McGregor can breathe a little easier. The reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight titleholder took a majority decision from Nate Diaz in the UFC 202 headliner on Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Judges Derek Cleary and Jeff Mullen awarded McGregor 48-47 scorecards, while Glenn Trowbridge ruled it a 47-47 draw. The long-awaited non-title rematch resulted in a “Fight of the Year” contender and pulled McGregor even at 1-1 in their head-to-head series. The SBG Ireland cornerstone focused on Diaz’s lead leg early in the bout, ripping into his thigh with crushing kicks. It led to a more stationary Diaz and left him susceptible to punches. McGregor (20-3, 8-1 UFC) knocked down the Californian three times in the first two rounds but failed to generate the stoppage he predicted. His pace slowed late in the second round and into the third, as Diaz upped the pressure and began slamming multi-punch combinations into his body and head. He was also effective in the clinch, as he trapped McGregor along the fence and unleashed with punches, knees and occasional standing elbows.

Donald Cerrone, Dana White Have Differing Views on Potential Return to Lightweight

If the end result is like this, Donald Cerrone probably wouldn’t mind having “off” days on fight night a little more frequently. Despite admittedly not feeling his best, “Cowboy” won his third straight bout at 170 pounds at UFC 202 on Saturday night, defeating Rick Story via technical knockout 2:02 into the second frame at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The Jackson-Wink MMA stalwart looked to be in top form from the beginning, but he really began to pick Story apart in the round two. There, Cerrone attacked with kicks to the legs and body as well as punches to the head to keep his opponent on the defensive before putting Story away with a multi-strike combination punctuated by a head kick and follow-up punches. “I woke up with the worst headache I’ve ever had in my life. Today was just one of those off days,” Cerrone said on Fox Sports 1. “I was telling my coach, ‘I don’t feel it. I don’t have the fire.’ We train everyday, you train to beat someone on your worst day. I was in the back just like grinding and trying to find first gear and just couldn’t do it.

UFC 202 Salaries: Conor McGregor Rakes in Record $3 Million Purse

Conor McGregor has three million reasons to smile. The Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight titleholder pulled in a record $3 million purse, as he took a majority decision from Nate Diaz in the UFC 202 headliner on Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. McGregor avenged his UFC 196 submission loss to “The Ultimate Fighter 5” winner, with 48-47 marks from judges Derek Cleary and Jeff Mullen offsetting the 47-47 scorecard struck by dissenting judge Glenn Trowbridge. Diaz walked away with $2,000,000 in wake of the five-round rematch. Meanwhile, Anthony Johnson banked $270,000 in the co-main event, as he knocked out Glover Teixeira with a right uppercut 13 seconds into the first round and likely cemented himself as the No. 1 contender at 205 pounds. Kazuki Tokudome to Defend Lightweight Title Against Takasuke Kume at Pancrase 280

Kazuki Tokudome will defend his Pancrase lightweight championship against Takasuke Kume at Pancrase 280 on Sept. 11 at Differ Ariake in Tokyo. Tokudome has rattled off four consecutive victories since being released by the Ultimate Fighting Championship following consecutive defeats to Norman Parke , Yui Chul Nam and Johnny Case . The 29-year-old judo black belt last fought at Pancrase 277 on April 24, when he stopped Akbarh Arreola with first-round punches to retain his lightweight crown. He boasts 11 finishes among his 16 professional wins. Tokudome is the sixth man to carry the lightweight King of Pancrase mantle, along with Isao Kobayashi , Koji Oishi , Maximo Blanco , Katsuya Inoue and Shoji Maruyama . Kume, 31, will enter the match on the strength of a two-fight winning streak. He last appeared at Pancrase 277 in April, when he walked away with a split decision over Eiji Ishikawa . Kume has secured 11 of his 18 career victories by submission and has never been finished in his 26-fight career. He has won 12 of his past 15 bouts, losing only to the aforementioned Nam (twice) and A-Sol Kwon .

Daniel Cormier: ‘Rumble’ Johnson, Not Jon Jones, Next for 205-Pound Title Shot

After Saturday night, it’s hard to deny Anthony Johnson a second chance at UFC gold. In a battle of light heavyweight contenders, “Rumble” confirmed his reputation as arguably the scariest man in the division by knocking out Glover Teixeira with an uppercut 13 seconds into their co-headlining encounter at UFC 202 . “I told my coach this morning if I was gonna knock out Glover it was going to be by uppercut, and it worked out perfectly,” Johnson said during an interview on Fox Sports 1. “My fighting style and his fighting style, I just knew that the speed and power would be there for me and that he would make a mistake. And he did.” That makes three straight knockout victories for Johnson since he fell to current light heavyweight king Daniel Cormier for the vacant belt at UFC 187 last year. Even Cormier admits that the Blackzilians standout has earned a rematch. “I thought Rumble would win; I thought he would knock him out. I didn’t think it would be that fast, but that’s what Rumble does, man. He’s a great fighter,” Cormier said.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - A Different Kind of Update

With recent months in the Ultimate Fighting Championship offering so many shake-ups in the official Sherdog.com rankings, this update is different in a way, with many stars reaffirming their status in unique ways. Conor McGregor ’s status atop the 145-pound division was not at stake at UFC 202 on Aug. 20, but the Irishman’s rematch with Nate Diaz was still of massive importance. After being embarrassed by Diaz at UFC 196 in March, McGregor turned in a career-defining performance in another 170-pound contest, winning a majority decision over Diaz in an instant classic. Despite his top spot in the featherweight division, evening the score with Diaz does not assure that McGregor will have a second meeting with Jose Aldo , given that “The Notorious” one is already angling for 155-pound contendership. Donald Cerrone had his third straight welterweight fight in the Octagon and looked brilliant in dispatching Rick Story in the second round. Previously, we announced our preference to continue ranking “Cowboy” at 155 pounds in spite of his recent 170-pound activity.

The Bottom Line: Mystic Mac’s Miracle Round

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. *** Conor McGregor has lived what feels like a charmed MMA existence. During his rapid ascent into superstardom, it seems like everything has broken right for the Irishman. That’s not to diminish his hard work, intelligence and skill, but MMA is not a sport that lends itself to storybook endings. Things have a way of working out for McGregor in ways that they just don’t seem to work out for other fighters. That never felt truer than during the fourth round of his rematch with Nate Diaz -- one of the most improbable rounds in the history of the sport. MMA has a way of turning quickly. There are so many ways to win that an advantage doesn’t necessarily last for long. Mirko Filipovic was destroying Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in Pride Fighting Championships , but there was always the possibility that the fight would shift if Nogueira got it to the ground.

Too Legit to Quit | Multichannel

DW: I think there are a lot of different reasons for that. First of all, when we were growing up, your parents would put you in karate or Taekwondo or something like that. This is the new martial art that children are taking all over the world, so that’s number one. Number two, I think that these millennials consume content faster. They take in a lot more information than we did when we were younger. With sports like boxing you can punch to the head and the body, but in the UFC you can kick, punch, knee, elbow, go to the ground and grapple — it’s faster and it’s more exciting. It’s three rounds instead of 10 rounds or five rounds instead of 12 rounds. It’s just a faster, more exciting sport.
