Dana White found to be in 'breach' of UFC 'regulatory protocol' for removing judge at UFC Fight Night 48
"After an internal review, the UFC organization announced today that a breach of its independent regulatory protocol occurred on Saturday night during UFC FIGHT NIGHT MACAO. After the second fight of the night, UFC President Dana White requested that Howard Hughes, one of the event's five assigned judges, be removed from working any further bouts. Pursuant to UFC's protocol, neither White nor any other UFC executive possesses such authority. Nevertheless, protocol was breached and Hughes did not work further bouts on Saturday night. The UFC organization has always been in support of government regulation and oversight. Additionally, the UFC has established a protocol when required to self-regulate events due to the lack of an official athletic commission, federation or other regulatory body. In those instances where UFC holds events in locations without a regulatory body, the UFC's protocol dictates that the organization's internal regulators will handle all commission functions independently and without interference by company executives or employees. The UFC remains committed to maintaining the strictest regulatory environment for competition and vows that no similar breach of protocol will happen again.
Attila Vegh ( 5-1 in Bellator ), who won the 2012 light heavyweight tournament, then became Bellator’s 205-pound champion with a decision win over Christian M’Pumbu in February 2013. In March of this year, he lost his title in a rematch against Emanuel Newton; Vegh and Newton now hold split-decision victories over each other. Vegh’s dismissal is kind of inexplicable. He’s one of the best light-heavyweights Bellator had under contract, and a rubber-match against Newton seemed like an obvious booking in the future. I don’t get it.
UFC acknowledges breach of protocol with judge removal, offers apology

Lamas vs. Bermudez, Ellenberger vs. Gastelum among four fights confirmed for UFC 180
Gastelum (9-0) has been very impressive in the UFC, but has struggled to make the 170 lbs limit, having missed on his first attempt vs. Rick Story and then having to compete against Nico Musoke at catchweight. Nevertheless, he's yet to taste defeat, and this is his toughest opponent to date. Ellenberger (29-8) is on a two-fight losing streak, with a lackluster decision to Rory MacDonald and a 3rd round TKO to Robbie Lawler setting him back greatly in the pack of contenders. This fight could very well be his last gasp at remaining relevant in the upper tier of welterweight.

JISSN | Full text | International society of sports nutrition position stand: caffeine and performance
Position Statement: The position of The Society regarding caffeine supplementation
and sport performance is summarized by the following seven points: 1.) Caffeine is
effective for enhancing sport performance in trained athletes when consumed in low-to-moderate
dosages (~3-6 mg/kg) and overall does not result in further enhancement in performance
when consumed in higher dosages (≥ 9 mg/kg). 2.) Caffeine exerts a greater ergogenic
effect when consumed in an anhydrous state as compared to coffee. 3.) It has been
shown that caffeine can enhance vigilance during bouts of extended exhaustive exercise,
as well as periods of sustained sleep deprivation. 4.) Caffeine is ergogenic for sustained
maximal endurance exercise, and has been shown to be highly effective for time-trial
performance. 5.) Caffeine supplementation is beneficial for high-intensity exercise,
including team sports such as soccer and rugby, both of which are categorized by intermittent
activity within a period of prolonged duration.
Morning Report: Ronda Rousey says Gina Carano is 'insisting' on fighting at 135, wants big money to compete with elite grapplers
"There's a lot of other girls that they're strong, but they don't have that feeling. So they overwhelm people and they only get TKOs. There's none of that one punch knockout power, and that's the kind of thing that you don't lose. It's that kind of thing that stays with you even if you take time off. I think styles do make fights, and style wise, Gina is the absolute worst match up for me. That's why I've been wanting to fight her for a while, because she could be one of my biggest challenges."

NEWS - Hoboken Bartender Enters Ring As Professional MMA Fighter | WSOF World Series of Fighting MMA
Katlyn Chookagian spends most of her time working as a bartender at Lulu’s, the nightclub inside the W Hotel in Hoboken.
Four days a week, you’ll find Chookagian mixing cocktails at the popular bar in the Mile Square City.
During the rest of her time, she’s busy training at the All-Star BJJ in Kenilworth, working with five other mixed martial arts fighters who are part of Team Renzo Gracie.
“He comes and runs the classes sometimes,” Chookagian said of the legendary mixed martial arts master. “I’m generally training six days a week. It’s hard, because I go to bed at 4:30 a.m. after bartending and I’m up at 6 a.m. to train. Sometimes, I get yelled at, because I’m overtraining, but that’s what I do. If I’m not training, what else am I going to do? I like it. It keeps me prepared.”
The hard work paid off last weekend, as Chookagian, who stands 5-foot-9 and weighs 115 pounds, won her professional debut, taking a three-round unanimous decision over Rebecca Heintzman at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia in the Cage Fury Fighting Championship series.
Chookagian’s bout was the lone female bout in the 11-bout card Saturday night.

UFC fighter rankings: Rafael dos Anjos moves into top 3 at lightweight
It was a good weekend to be Brazilian, as Rafael dos Anjos, Thales Leites, and Wilson Reis all came away with wins at UFC Fight Night in Tulsa. Dos Anjos and Leites were the biggest movers in this week's rankings update, with the lightweight moving into the top 3 and Leites crawling closer towards top 10 territory. The pound-for-pound rankings changed up a bit following the removal of the defeated Ben Henderson, while welterweight saw a new entrant into the top 15.

Benavidez will look to remain amongst the Ultimate Fighting
Championship’s flyweight contenders in a newly announced bout
UFC officials Tuesday announced the contest, which will be part of
a Nov. 22 UFC Fight

Curran and Paige
VanZant previously scheduled for Oct. 4 has been shifted to the

Women's MMA Report: Bellator signs Coenen and Budd, Inoue wins Deep Jewels title
Though she does not yet possess the same star power as Coenen or Budd, jiu-jitsu world champion Nogueira could be the future of Bellator’s newly-created women’s featherweight division. The skilled grappler has finished all six of her opponents to date and she has yet to see Round 3 as a professional. After taking a lengthy hiatus from MMA to focus on jiu-jitsu competitions, Nogueira returned to the sport in September and scored back-to-back first-round submission victories before the end of 2013. She was in talks with the UFC, and was also courted by Invicta FC, but ultimately decided to join Coenen and Budd on the Bellator roster.
Beyond the Octagon: UFC vets, plus the only man to beat Jose Aldo returns
And on the main card, Michihiro Omigawa (14-14-1, 4-1 Sengoku, 2-0 Dream, 1-6 UFC, 0-1 Pride) found his first victory in nearly three years thanks to a first-round armbar of Peter Cepeda (1-2-0). Omigawa has been extremely hot and cold throughout his career, with a pair of fairly disastrous UFC runs book-ending a star-making run in Dream and Sengoku, which saw the stone-faced Omigawa climb the ranks thanks in large part to an unexpected run through the Sengoku featherweight tournament. The win over Cepeda snaps a four-fight losing streak.

UFC Fight Night does 689,000 viewers
Benson Henderson had proven to be a reliable drawing card for UFC on both FOX, and most recently, FS 1. But just as his success in the lightweight ranks ran into a brick wall like fist of Rafael dos Anjos on Saturday night, so did his main event drawing power. Saturday's FS 1 show averaged 689,000 viewers, the third-lowest for a Saturday night Fight Night to date on the station. What made the number more surprising was when Henderson scored one of his most impressive wins of his career, when he dominated Rustam Khabliov on June 7 on FS 1, that show drew 1,217,000 viewers on average for the show, and peaked at 1.56 million viewers for the main event. It was the third-best number of the 11 FS 1 Fight Night shows to date, On Saturday, not only was the audience much lower, but they didn't stick with the show until its conclusion, nor even peak for Henderson vs. dos Anjos. The show's high point of 962,000 viewers came during the Max Holloway vs. Clay Collard fight, which aired just after 11 p.m. The show did beat the Aug. 16 show headlined by Ryan Bader vs. Ovince St. Preux in Males 18-34 and 18-49, but was down six percent from that show's overall 735,000 average for the main card broadcast.
Friday's Legacy FC 34 lineup set with Hall vs. Souza, Brookins vs. Lyons
Hall comes to Legacy FC on the heels of a third-round TKO win over Cortez Phelia at Bellator 120, the promotion’s first pay-per-view event, in May. That was his second Bellator win after a 44-second TKO of Jay Black at Bellator 73. All six of his wins have come by stoppage.
Ex-champ Attila Vegh, ex-title challenger Shahbulat Shamhalaev among Bellator roster cuts
Shamhalaev (12-3-1 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) has back-to-back losses after a run that saw him go unbeaten since a November 2009 loss to current UFC lightweight standout Khabib Nurmagomedov. The American Top Team-based Dagestani fighter won Bellator’s Season 7 featherweight tournament, but was submitted by Pat Curran in the first round at Bellator 95 when he challenged for the title. After more than a year off, he returned in May at Bellator 120, but was submitted by Fabricio da Silva.

UFC fight bookings roundup - 8/19 - 8/26
Since the UFC has decided to produce 50+ events in 2014, there is a remarkable amount of fighter signings and new match-ups being set up throughout any given week. Many of these new signings are for match-ups that take place on the undercard, or on the Fight Pass portion of a PPV, so we are going to continue with a new weekly (or bi-weekly if needed) series of articles where we take a brief look at each and every bout booked by the promotion in one place.
"You've got to set your goals as high as you can to continue to push hard. I've reached it a whole lot faster than I thought I was going to. I've only been training for four and a half years and I won the belt, which is pretty crazy. So now I've got to set new goals. Yeah, I did reach my dream, but now I've got a new dream and the new dream is to be pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world."

Dana White: Kelvin Gastelum working with Mike Dolce for UFC 180, vows weight issues behind him
"He's going to hire Mike Dolce for his next fight. He promised me he will be on weight and that will never happen again, so I'm not worried. He's a good kid, he's a great fighter. He only calls out the best guys in the world, he wants to keep moving up that ladder. He knows that making weight is part of his job. He's going to do the right things to make it happen now, and I'm not worried about it."
Dustin Jacoby now meets Muhammed 'King Mo' Lawal at Bellator 123
Jacoby has a modest two-fight winning streak and victories in four of his five fights since he was cut loose from the UFC after back-to-back losses to Clifford Starks and Chris Camozzi. Since then, he picked up a 45-second knockout win for Hoosier Fight Club on the Midwest regional circuit and beat Lucas Lopes with a first-round knockout for Titan FC just this past Friday. His lone loss in his past five fights was a unanimous decision setback to fellow UFC vet David Branch at WSOF 1.
Dana White apologizes for UFC Macau judging controversy: ‘I was wrong'
The UFC, which functions as its own athletic commission in regions that lack a governing body, released a statement Tuesday morning admonishing White for his "breach of [the UFC's] independent regulatory protocol," stating that neither White nor any other UFC executive possesses the authority to remove a judge from their assignment, regardless of whether an event is self-regulated or overseen under a specific athletic commission.
