Plenty of Fight Left in Marloes Coenen

Marloes Coenen is the centerpiece of Bellator’s women’s featherweight division. | Photo: Keith Mills/Sherdog.com One look at the resume of Marloes Coenen will tell you she has to be considered a prohibitive favorite against Arlene Blencowe, her opponent at Bellator 141 . Coenen has been fighting for more than 14 years and has taken on some of the top names in MMA, including reigning Invicta Fighting Championships titleholder Cristiane Justino, onetime Strikeforce champion Sarah Kaufman and former Ultimate Fighting Championship title challengers Miesha Tate and Liz Carmouche. Meanwhile, Blencowe has just 10 pro fights under her belt and sports a relatively modest 6-4 record. However, Coenen is not taking Blencowe lightly as she prepares for her second appearance under the Bellator MMA banner. “She is a decorated boxer, so that’s something to think about,” Coenen told Sherdog.com. “She has some good hands and she’s shorter than me, so I’ll have to watch that. I see some weaknesses in her ground game, so I’ve been focusing on slipping punches and taking things to the ground.

Book Review: Justin Wren’s ‘Fight for the Forgotten’

Justin Wren put his MMA career on hold for a higher purpose. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com The world of MMA can be an insular one. The sky is always falling, it seems, and it is easy to get lost in the labyrinthine noise of what so-and-so said or did. Clickbait and Soundbytes are the new Scylla and Charybdis. Following this sport can gently and cogently separate us from the rest of the world; indeed, escapism is the coquetry of most sports fandom. This reality is one thing for fans and media but quite another for the fighters themselves. That sense of emptiness and meaninglessness is exactly where Justin Wren ’s story begins in his book, “Fight for the Forgotten,” co-authored by Loretta Hunt. Best known as the youngest contestant and quarterfinalist on the most-watched season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” the book introduces Wren as a shy, unassuming kid. While the typical tropes are present in his story -- young kid gets bullied, finds his way through athletics -- the severity of his experiences is compelling. Wren would grow out of the physical and social awkwardness of his middle school and high school days, but he would continue to battle with depression and suicidal ideations well into adulthood.

Gracie vs. Kimura - October 23, 1951 (Maracanã Stadium - Rio de Janeiro, Brasil)

On October 23, 1951, Helio Gracie faced Masahiko Kimura who outweighed him by nearly 80 lbs. It was the first time that a jiu-jitsu world championship match would be held outside of Japan. Kimura was so confident of victory that he declared that if Helio could last for more than 3 minutes, he should be declared the winner. After 13 minutes, Kimura caught Helio in the shoulder lock that, today, bears Kimura's name. Helio wouldn't tap, so Carlos Gracie threw in the towel forfeiting the match to the Japanese giant. His loss to Kimura was consider one of the greatest victories of Helio Gracie's career. "I seen afterwards the guy went upstairs and got paid like $1,300. And I said, 'How the hell did he get $1,300 and I only got $200? And I just knocked him out?' That's all I was making under the table. The owner said, "He's a pro, you're not.' I said, 'What do I need to do to be one?' He said, 'You're a minor; you'll need a parent to sign.' I said, 'Cool, my dad's downstairs at the bar.' Grabbed my dad, me and my dad walked back upstairs. I signed on the first line, my dad signed right up underneath. And that's how I became a pro fighter."

Saad Awad, only man to defeat Bellator champ Will Brooks, wants to do it again

Outside the Octagon: The Decade-Long Road to Arlovski-Mir

I talked to Frank Mir at length about Andrei Arlovski. In 2005. At the time, Mir didn’t have a fight scheduled, and frankly, he was M.I.A. from the MMA world as he recovered from the motorcycle accident that threatened his life and took his UFC heavyweight title. The man now holding the belt Mir never lost in the Octagon was Belarus native Arlovski, who shook off a 1-2 start to his UFC career to become perhaps the most complete heavyweight fighter in the sport. He was a fearsome and dangerous force whose six-fight winning streak included three wins in UFC title fights that lasted a combined five minutes and 12 seconds, and the only one expected to have a chance against “The Pit Bull” was Mir. It was a SuperFight in a sport just starting to gain traction as a major player on the United States scene, only months removed from the epic Ultimate Fighter season one finale bout between Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar. And everyone loves heavyweights, so what better way to showcase MMA to the masses than with a fight between an Eastern European Terror against the Cerebral Assassin from the United States.

Guillard talks 'crazy' 380k Anderson Silva fine: 'He's a man, he'll deal with it'

"Everybody has mixed feelings about it." Guillard told Bloody Elbow, speaking of the UFC's recent uniform deals. "I was released from the UFC before all that was actually official. So, for me I was released, so I have no beef about it, but I felt a little bit of relief though. I was like, "Man, I'm glad they let me go before all this really happened." Because a lot of guys are a little upset that they're losing sponsorships. For us, that's how we make a living. Most of the time, for me, in the past I'd make more money with sponsors than I actually made in the UFC. So, I can imagine how it hits their pocket, it upsets their living, how they live at home. A lot of guys have kids and families. So, I think it affects a lot of people and a lot of people are upset about it. I just hope the good name of the UFC, which is a household name doesn't get washed out because seasoned vets don't want to fight or sign with them. It's gonna really hurt the business."

Competition Pak (advanced)

"What do I eat the last week with Fighter Diet before my fitness competition?" This is one of the most annoying questions I get. I know you're anxious and want to do all perfectly, but listen, you cannot plan your last week several weeks out! First of all, the last week is not a magic event. There won't be major huge differences in your looks. If you're not in shape a week before you are going to walk out on stage you won't get in better shape. Yes, you can reduce some water retention, improve your definition by putting a tan on, but face it, there are no tricks that will either break or make you! Pauline Nordin to the far left   If the last week was so important, why even bother doing the prep 3 months prior to the show, huh? Remember what the prep is for: to lose fat to see muscle

Despite Talks with UFC Brass, Demetrious Johnson Not Currently Considering Move to 135

Demetrious Johnson is only focused on defending his flyweight title. | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com Even if he vanquishes John Dodson for a second time at UFC 191 , Demetrious Johnson believes he has plenty left to accomplish in the flyweight division. Johnson’s sentiment seems strange considering he owns convincing victories over many of the most prominent names in 125-pound Top 10. But when “Mighty Mouse” mentions who he hasn’t beaten, it seems clear that he is intent on truly cleaning out the division. “There’s still a lot of guys I haven’t fought. I haven’t fought Sergio Pettis ; I haven’t Henry Cejudo ; I haven’t fought Ryan Benoit . They’re all great athletes,” Johnson said during a conference call to promote UFC 191. “Just because they don’t have big star names like the other guys, and they haven’t worked their way up and had a chance to test their skill set against guys like Dodson or [Joseph] Benavidez or Ian McCall , doesn’t mean they’re not a challenge or somebody I’m not looking forward to fighting.” One thing Johnson isn’t looking forward to is a move to bantamweight for a prospective showdown against that division’s champion.
