After Accidental Entry into MMA, Lorenzo Hood Looking to Make Name at Bellator 141

Lorenzo Hood plans on making an impression at Bellator 141. | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com Lorenzo Hood is a large dude with crushing striking power who has stopped everybody he’s beaten He’s also one of the best-kept secrets in MMA’s heavyweight division. He’s only lost twice – one because of an injury – and the feeling from within Bellator MMA is that the sky is the limit for him. But virtually nobody knows Hood, a man who got into the fight game kind of by accident. “I went to go watch some of my friends who were fighting in an amateur event,” Hood told Sherdog.com in a recent interview. “One of the heavyweights got hurt and the promoter came backstage asking if we knew a heavyweight who would fight. My friend’s coach said they had me, but I had never fought before [in an organized event] but I knew how to fight. “So they wrapped my hands,” he added. “I went out there and I knocked the guy out in like 15 seconds.” Hood, a native of the North Side of Chicago, spent the majority of the early portion of his career chasing a dream that involved flattening opponents, but not with his hands and feet.

Australia confiscated 650,000 guns. Murders and suicides plummeted.

It is worth considering, as one data point in the pool of evidence about what sorts of gun control policies do and do not work, the experience of Australia. Between October 1996 and September 1997, Australia responded to its own gun violence problem with a solution that was both straightforward and severe: It collected roughly 650,000 privately held guns. It was one of the largest mandatory gun buyback programs in recent history.

Demetrious Johnson: 'Uneducated fools' should stick to watching reality TV

"I try not to think about that stuff because it's only going to go so far and when you start to worry about that stuff and let it get in your mind then you stop putting on great performances and writing your name in the history books. I'm more focused on that and that's all that matters to me.

Plenty of Fight Left in Marloes Coenen

Marloes Coenen is the centerpiece of Bellator’s women’s featherweight division. | Photo: Keith Mills/Sherdog.com One look at the resume of Marloes Coenen will tell you she has to be considered a prohibitive favorite against Arlene Blencowe, her opponent at Bellator 141 . Coenen has been fighting for more than 14 years and has taken on some of the top names in MMA, including reigning Invicta Fighting Championships titleholder Cristiane Justino, onetime Strikeforce champion Sarah Kaufman and former Ultimate Fighting Championship title challengers Miesha Tate and Liz Carmouche. Meanwhile, Blencowe has just 10 pro fights under her belt and sports a relatively modest 6-4 record. However, Coenen is not taking Blencowe lightly as she prepares for her second appearance under the Bellator MMA banner. “She is a decorated boxer, so that’s something to think about,” Coenen told Sherdog.com. “She has some good hands and she’s shorter than me, so I’ll have to watch that. I see some weaknesses in her ground game, so I’ve been focusing on slipping punches and taking things to the ground.

Is Jon Jones the UFC’s Forgotten King?

“It’s a fail-proof system for those who do not believe in second chances” – are you kidding? I hope the clown who wrote this article isnt getting paid for this garbage. So let me get this straight….first he crashes his car and is charged with DUI. THEN he tests positive for coke. THEN he crashes into another car causing injury and fleeing the scene and hides out for a couple days. And to you the people who dont want to see him come back arent giving him a second chance? Maybe im bad at math but it seems he has had more than his fair share of chances to clean up. Or maybe you dont know what SECOND chance means. Go back to school you clown.

http://www.cagepotato.com/ufc-signee-dashon-johnson-xplode-fight-series-and-the-practice-of-padding-records-to-produce-talent/

Unfortunately, it would appear that Johnson is not the only Xplode MMA fighter who has received, let’s call it favorable treatment, while fighting for Xplode. You see, Xplode Fight Series is less in the MMA business than they are the squash match business — one look over the fighters in their stable reveals more padded records than I care to count and more tomato cans than an Andy Warhol painting. Essentially, Xplode MMA/Fight Series is setting up their “premiere” fighters against nobodies in the hopes that they will be signed by the UFC for a regional level show, which their management company will then presumably profit from. It takes “conflict of interest” to an entirely different level.

Book Review: Justin Wren’s ‘Fight for the Forgotten’

Justin Wren put his MMA career on hold for a higher purpose. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com The world of MMA can be an insular one. The sky is always falling, it seems, and it is easy to get lost in the labyrinthine noise of what so-and-so said or did. Clickbait and Soundbytes are the new Scylla and Charybdis. Following this sport can gently and cogently separate us from the rest of the world; indeed, escapism is the coquetry of most sports fandom. This reality is one thing for fans and media but quite another for the fighters themselves. That sense of emptiness and meaninglessness is exactly where Justin Wren ’s story begins in his book, “Fight for the Forgotten,” co-authored by Loretta Hunt. Best known as the youngest contestant and quarterfinalist on the most-watched season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” the book introduces Wren as a shy, unassuming kid. While the typical tropes are present in his story -- young kid gets bullied, finds his way through athletics -- the severity of his experiences is compelling. Wren would grow out of the physical and social awkwardness of his middle school and high school days, but he would continue to battle with depression and suicidal ideations well into adulthood.

Frank Mir Sees Kindred Spirit in UFC 191 Foe Andrei Arlovski: We Were Both Counted Out

Frank Mir's two-fight winning streak has halted retirement talk. | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com When Frank Mir discusses his upcoming bout with Andrei Arlovski at UFC 191 , it seems as though the veteran heavyweight has formed something of a mutual admiration society with his fellow former champion. While some of that likely stems from the two fighters time together as training partners, that respect also precedes their days at Jackson-Wink MMA. Mir recalls watching Arlovski as the Belarusian terrorized the heavyweight division approximately a decade ago. “I remember when I watched him fight “Cabbage” Correia at [UFC 47],” Mir said during a conference call. “I was pretty impressed with how overwhelming he was -- his offense, his footwork, his combinations. I remember just being so impressed. It was one of those few times where I personally was a fan. I was like, ‘Wow this is a very beautiful thing to watch.’ So impressive, so explosive, so fast.” Both Mir and Arlovski captured championships fairly early in their promotional tenures.

John Dodson's Fab Five

John Dodson has gone on the record with his desire to not just win a UFC title, but to win three of them in different weight classes. On Saturday, September 5, he can start that remarkable quest when he faces UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson for the second time in the main event of UFC 191 in Las Vegas. So can he win belts at 125, 135 and 145 pounds? He’s got the confidence, and his performances in the defining bouts below show that he may have the talent to make history as well. 2010 John Moraga I A pro since 2004, Dodson didn’t avoid tough competition on his way to the UFC, with his second pro fight against Japanese contender Yasuhiro Urushitani as proof. And when you approach your career in this manner, you can take some bumps and bruises along the way. So after tough decision losses on the regional circuit to the likes of Urushitani, Mike Easton and Pat Runez, Dodson was pitted against fellow prospect John Moraga in the Dominican Republic in what turned out to be one of the most bizarre events in MMA history. “No one wanted to fight,” Dodson said.

Holm Game to Challenge Rousey

For all her accomplishments in the pro boxing world, Holly Holm has to admit that she’s never had a fight announced on Good Morning America. “Never,” she laughs, referring to last Friday’s GMA segment in which UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey let the world know that she would be fighting “The Preacher’s Daughter” at UFC 195 on January 2. The announcement came as a surprise to fans and pundits, as well as to Holm, who expected to be fighting former Strikeforce champion Sarah Kaufman next. But the unbeaten Albuquerque native wasn’t turning it down. “It was definitely a shock, but I was super excited right away,” Holm said, noting that she got the call for the bout last Tuesday. To keep it quiet for that long in the days of social media is a championship effort in itself, but even on the day of Rousey’s GMA appearance, Holm treated it as just another training day. “I said I’m just gonna get up and train and I’ll train hard but not get too worked up,” she said. “I don’t want it to be any different than another fight.

Legacy FC 44 Weigh-in Results: Araujo, Morono on Target for Main Event

On Friday night, Legacy Fighting Championship will host its 44th event and thankfully for the promotion, the main-card fighters on the bill weighed in according to plan. To be held inside the Arena Theatre in Houston, Legacy FC 44 ’s main card will air live on AXS TV starting at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT on Friday. Main event fighters Valdir Araujo and Alex Morono both came in below the welterweight limit, officially approving their fight. Morono was the first to step to the scale and he clocked in at 171 pounds. Araujo followed suit and tipped the scale at the exact poundage. Not to be outdone, the co-featured bout between Rocky Long and Sage Northcutt was given the green light even though only one of the combatants easily made the 165-pound catchweight limit. Long, filling in as a late replacement for Andrew Parker , came in at 166.4 pounds. Northcutt was next and nailed it, weighing 165.2 pounds. Northcutt agreed to take the fight anyway. Justin Reiswerg originally came in too heavy for the lightweight limit. He was given one hour to cut four ounces in order for his fight with Carrington Banks to be approved without penalty.

Boxing: Abner Mares Still Hungry Ahead of PBC Clash with Leo Santa Cruz

After all life has thrown at Abner Mares, fighting seems easy. | Photo: Suzanne Teresa/Premier Boxing Champions Joy was once a handful of day-old goo Abner Mares had sifted out of a large trash container that sat behind a grocery store in poverty-laden Hawaiian Gardens, Calif. That was the existence the former three-division champion once knew, day-to-day, picking trash and eating scraps. Every so often, the fetid smell of rotted garbage would be tolerated by mining a box of day-old ice cream. “That’s how I lived -- like an animal,” Mares told Sherdog.com, “and people wonder why I fight the way I do. I know what it was like having your stomach ache for days because there was nothing to eat. We were that poor. It’s why nothing ever stands in my way in the ring.” It is why Leo “El Terremoto” Santa Cruz (30-0-1, 17 KO) will have his unblemished record threatened when he climbs into the ring against Mares (29-1-1, 15 KO) on the Premier Boxing Champions show from the Staples Center on Saturday in Los Angeles. Sherdog’s Top 10: Strangest Endings - Top 10

Sunday's UFC main event ended as strange as anything on this list. | Photo: Jeff Botari/Getty/UFC The fight game has a long history of memorable finishes, from dramatic knockouts and submissions to outcomes marred by controversy. However, sometimes something crazy occurs inside the throes of combat, and oftentimes, it cannot be explained. Mixed martial arts has had its share of strange endings in its relatively young history: double knockouts, self-inflicted knockouts, unavoidable accidents, illnesses and equipment malfunctions. These wacky conclusions have taken place inside the biggest promotions, from Pride Fighting Championships and the Ultimate Fighting Championship , all the way down to the regional level. The latest installment in the Sherdog Top 10 series examines the strangest finishes in MMA history. *** HONORABLE MENTIONS: Cristiane Justino vs. Shayna Baszler (EliteXC “Unfinished Business”); Matt Makowski vs. Nick Serra (EliteXC “Primetime”); Yoshihiro Nakao vs. Heath Herring (K-1 Premium 2005 Dynamite!!); Kazuyoshi Kiyama vs.

Despite Talks with UFC Brass, Demetrious Johnson Not Currently Considering Move to 135

Demetrious Johnson is only focused on defending his flyweight title. | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com Even if he vanquishes John Dodson for a second time at UFC 191 , Demetrious Johnson believes he has plenty left to accomplish in the flyweight division. Johnson’s sentiment seems strange considering he owns convincing victories over many of the most prominent names in 125-pound Top 10. But when “Mighty Mouse” mentions who he hasn’t beaten, it seems clear that he is intent on truly cleaning out the division. “There’s still a lot of guys I haven’t fought. I haven’t fought Sergio Pettis ; I haven’t Henry Cejudo ; I haven’t fought Ryan Benoit . They’re all great athletes,” Johnson said during a conference call to promote UFC 191. “Just because they don’t have big star names like the other guys, and they haven’t worked their way up and had a chance to test their skill set against guys like Dodson or [Joseph] Benavidez or Ian McCall , doesn’t mean they’re not a challenge or somebody I’m not looking forward to fighting.” One thing Johnson isn’t looking forward to is a move to bantamweight for a prospective showdown against that division’s champion.

Fight Psyche: Alex Chambers talks about being your own worst enemy

"I definitely overthink things in training more than a I should but in a fight, that muscle memory that you've built from all the reps and all the drilling in the gym kicks in. That's the idea behind martial arts - that by training yourself your body can take over instead of your mind when you need it to. The philosophy of martial arts is that you are really fighting yourself, that you are your own worst enemy. Come fight time, you want to be reacting."

That extra time means I can still get eight hours of sleep, even if it isn’t all at once. Because my body and my health are a priority, I’m fine with missing nights in front of the TV or working late on projects. In the meantime, my adrenal glands are now functioning as they should, and I have a lot more energy, burning fat and gaining muscle.
