Rory MacDonald Wants Time to Let Nose Heal, Targets Summer 2017 for Bellator Debut

While Rory MacDonald ’s signing with Bellator MMA became official on Friday night, it might be close to another year before “The Red King” makes his promotional debut. During a press conference following Bellator 160 in Anaheim, Calif., on Friday night, the former UFC welterweight title challenger said that he likely won’t fight until the summer of 2017 in order to let his nose heal from damage taken in two previous bouts. “It’s gonna be in 2017. I’m gonna say summer, but we’ll see what happens. It could be before that but definitely 2017,” MacDonald said. “I want to give my nose 100 percent time to heal. Last time I didn’t treat it the way I was supposed to,” he added. “I was too hungry to get back in the gym, to get in there and spar with guys to fight. That’s just in me to just go all the time. But I really have to pump brakes on this one because I can’t be taking a year off between every fight. That’s just not what I’m about. I’m gonna give it the time it needs to heal back to 100 percent, then hopefully I can fight once a quarter.

‘Pitbull’ Freire Leg Injury Gives Benson Henderson TKO Victory in Bellator 160 Headliner

Benson Henderson was the beneficiary of unfortunate circumstances. A leg injury suffered by Patricio Freire resulted in a second-round technical knockout for Henderson in the Bellator 160 headliner on Friday at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Freire (25-4) indicated he could no longer continue 2:26 into round two, the Brazilian suffering the first non-decision defeat of his 29-fight career. Henderson (24-6) was ineffective, up until the anticlimactic stoppage. Freire stayed one step ahead of the former Ultimate Fighting Championship and World Extreme Cagefighting titleholder, slicing into him with occasional right hands and kicks to the legs and body. Midway through the second round, “Pitbull” clipped Henderson with a left hook, moved in and engaged at close quarters. Once the two separated, it became clear something was wrong. Freire turned his back and waved off the match. The win made Henderson the No. 1 contender for Bellator MMA lightweight champion Michael Chandler ’s crown. The two will lock horns on Nov.

UFC on Fox: Maia vs Condit results, play-by-play

Pettis spins into Oliveira, sweeping on top and into his guard. Oliveira works to his feet and separates. Pettis buries a left shin into the ribs of Oliveira, prompting a desperation takedown from the Brazilian. Oliveira lays on his back and tries to wave Pettis in but Pettis backs off and lets him up, then sends him right back down with another left body kick. Petts swarms with punches but he's forced to chill when Oliveira swivels for an armbar. Pettis passes to side mount and Oliveira somehow hits a sweep and counter-wrestles his way into a reversal. Now Oliveira hops on Pettis' back but loses position, and Pettis greets him with two short punches. Oliveira glances with a nasty up-kick. Pettis finishes the round strong with strikes from the top. 10-9 Pettis.

What drives me? What makes me want to do this? I went through a lot of stuff. I have to thank my family, my girlfriend. Everyone around me that just kept me focused and just made me keep pushing. We pushed through, we got a new division, a new goal – two division champ – and that’s what I’ve set out to do.”

Demian Maia Willing to Wait for Title Shot After Quick Submission of Condit

It was expected to be a back-and-forth battle that hinged on a mistake here or a slip-up there. The main event of UFC on Fox 21 was figured by most to likely go the full five rounds, but the duel between Demian Maia and Carlos Condit didn’t even last two full minutes. Maia wasted little time in dragging “The Natural Born Killer” to the canvas and though Condit was relaxed on the mat, the Brazilian’s boa constrictor-like fighting style allowed him to slither onto his foe’s back. It was a shot on the ground, Condit later revealed, that caused him to give up his back. Once he did, he was like a seal fighting off a great white shark. Maia, easily among the greatest jiu jitsu players on the planet, slinked his arms around Condit’s lower jaw and neck and forced the tapout moments later. It was the quickest loss of Condit’s career, one that hasn’t ended so abruptly since 2005 when Carlos Prater took him out in the first back in 2004. After the bout Condit revealed that he’s leaning toward retirement, the antithesis of what Maia wants, which is a crack at Tyron Woodley ’s UFC welterweight title.

Demian Maia hoping to leapfrog Stephen Thompson for title shot after UFC on FOX 21 win: 'I'm much older'

“I think (there’s a possibility of getting the next shot),” Maia told MMAjunkie. “I respect Thompson very much. He’s a great guy. Of course, I’m much older than him. So, if they can give me (the title shot) to me first, that would be great. If not, I hope they give it to him fast and I wait to see who wins the fight.”

UFC on FOX 21 results: Jim Miller takes split decision from Joe Lauzon in rematch of 2012 classic

“There aren’t many guys built like us,” Miller said. “We live by the sword and die by the sword. I have a huge amount of respect for Joe Lauzon. After two rounds, I could tell we were in another special fight, much like our first one. We were both tired there in the third, but I knew he was going to keep going, so I just forced myself to keep going too. I think that was my 24th fight inside the octagon and I’ve only been in the UFC eight years. So that means I’m averaging three fights a year for eight years. I’m like the Cal Ripken Jr. of the UFC. I plan to keep going, too. I haven’t achieved everything I want to inside this sport.”

UFC on FOX 21: Bochniak Picks Up Split Deciison Win Over Barzola

Bochniak was quick to take to the center of the octagon and it was clear early on that Barzola would take on the role as counter-striker. Bochniak pressed the action with his footwork, but he did not attack once he closed the distance. The only shot he landed with high success was the jab, while Barzola’s best strike were his leg and body kicks. Bochniak finally shot in for the first time four minutes into the fight, and landed a takedown that he could do nothing with.

Olympic Gold Medalist Helen Maroulis ‘Open’ to a Future MMA Career

Helen Maroulis is open to transitioning from wrestling to MMA, but only after she fulfills the rest of her Olympic dreams. The gold medalist recently told TMZ Sports that she is “open” to a career in MMA but, “right now my focus is on wrestling.” Maroulis shocked the world last week at 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro when she edged legendary wrestler Saori Yoshida 4-1 to capture gold for the U.S. team. Yoshida is the most decorated freestyle wrestler of all time, having won gold medals in the 2004, ’08 and ’12 Olympics. Maroulis’ triumph was historic in that it was the first time in history that an American woman captured gold in wrestling at the Games. The 24-year-old Maryland native said that she is going to compete for Team USA in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo but maintained that switching over and fighting in the MMA cage is a possibility down the road.

GSP Honored To Fight Jean-Claude Van Damme, Itches To Get Back In UFC

Jean-Claude Van Damme for me, growing up in a French environment in Quebec, he was the biggest star, so fighting him for me was like fighting the hero of my day. It was a dream come true. It was like fighting my mentor, so to speak. Video: Paige VanZant returns from ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ KOs Rawlings with head kick

Rawlings (7-5 MMA, 2-2 UFC) controlled much of the action in the opening frame while a passive VanZant (7-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) stuck to the outside and rarely let her strikes go. After being implored by her corner between rounds to focus on simple strikes, VanZant did the exact opposite, throwing a jumping switch kick that connected with Rawlings’ jaw and sent her crashing to the canvas for the knockout at the 0:17 mark of Round 2.

Peralta Scores Huge Upset Over Guerrero in PBC on Spike Main Event

David Peralta is turning it up late in tonight's #PBConSpike main event! pic.twitter.com/dVqFN0tij0 — PBC (@premierboxing) August 28, 2016 In what was a sizable upset in the main event of the latest edition of Premier Boxing Champions ’ PBC on Spike series, David Peralta narrowly edged former world champion Robert Guerrero via split decision over 12 rounds. Guerrero started off strongly as he seized control of the action with his reach and sharp punching. But as the fight wore on, “The Ghost” seemed to fade, which allowed his foe back into the fight. With this being the biggest fight of his career, Peralta fought like he needed to and stormed past Guerrero in the second half of the fight, making the official scoring a toss-up going into the final two rounds. The welterweight clash was littered with bursts of great action, but Guerrero appeared to age more and more as the fight wore on, The crowd inside the Honda Center in Anaheim watched as the massive underdog battled his guts out until the very end and he wound up stealing a win from away from a man who desperately needed it.

UFC on Fox 21 ‘Maia vs. Condit’ Results: Play-by-Play & Updates

Jim Miller vs. Joe Lauzon Round 1 Lauzon comes forward at the start, backing up Miller to the fence, but the New Jerseyan catches Lauzon with a short left hand in the pocket. Lauzon catches a body kick and tries to trip Miller to the canvas, then opts for a heel hook attempt while dropping to guard. Both lightweights scramble back to their feet, where Lauzon reclaims his position in the center and Miller returns to the outside. Miller jabs his way back to the middle, but only for a moment, as Lauzon steps forward again with hard, straight right hands. Two minutes in, Lauzon instigates a clinch, but Miller breaks free with a knee to the body. Miller tries a spinning backfist and gets foot-swept to the canvas, leaving Lauzon on top in half guard with nearly half the round remaining. Lauzon postures up and tries to tee up Miller’s head for some grinding elbows, but Miller is defending well on the bottom. Miller pushes Lauzon back to full guard with 90 seconds remaining, then posts and escapes to his feet. Miller connects with a straight left, then a body-head combo that forces Lauzon to cover up.
