Rory MacDonald Wants Time to Let Nose Heal, Targets Summer 2017 for Bellator Debut

While Rory MacDonald ’s signing with Bellator MMA became official on Friday night, it might be close to another year before “The Red King” makes his promotional debut. During a press conference following Bellator 160 in Anaheim, Calif., on Friday night, the former UFC welterweight title challenger said that he likely won’t fight until the summer of 2017 in order to let his nose heal from damage taken in two previous bouts. “It’s gonna be in 2017. I’m gonna say summer, but we’ll see what happens. It could be before that but definitely 2017,” MacDonald said. “I want to give my nose 100 percent time to heal. Last time I didn’t treat it the way I was supposed to,” he added. “I was too hungry to get back in the gym, to get in there and spar with guys to fight. That’s just in me to just go all the time. But I really have to pump brakes on this one because I can’t be taking a year off between every fight. That’s just not what I’m about. I’m gonna give it the time it needs to heal back to 100 percent, then hopefully I can fight once a quarter.

Olympic Gold Medalist Helen Maroulis ‘Open’ to a Future MMA Career

Helen Maroulis is open to transitioning from wrestling to MMA, but only after she fulfills the rest of her Olympic dreams. The gold medalist recently told TMZ Sports that she is “open” to a career in MMA but, “right now my focus is on wrestling.” Maroulis shocked the world last week at 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro when she edged legendary wrestler Saori Yoshida 4-1 to capture gold for the U.S. team. Yoshida is the most decorated freestyle wrestler of all time, having won gold medals in the 2004, ’08 and ’12 Olympics. Maroulis’ triumph was historic in that it was the first time in history that an American woman captured gold in wrestling at the Games. The 24-year-old Maryland native said that she is going to compete for Team USA in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo but maintained that switching over and fighting in the MMA cage is a possibility down the road.

Quick Demian Maia Rear-Naked Choke Stuns Carlos Condit in UFC on Fox 21 Headliner

"Hi, my name is Demian Maia. I'll be the mixed martial artist choking you out this evening." — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) August 28, 2016 Demian Maia taught a master class on Carlos Condit . The 2007 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist tapped Condit with a first-round rear-naked choke in the UFC on Fox 21 headliner on Saturday at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia. Condit (30-10, 7-6 UFC) conceded defeat 1:52 into round one, as he was submitted for the first time in more than a decade. Maia (24-6, 18-6 UFC) delivered a takedown inside the first 40 seconds, calmly advanced his position and worked his way to the Albuquerque, New Mexico, native’s back. From there, he snaked his arms in place, tightened his squeeze and waited for the tapout. Condit reluctantly obliged. The win was Maia’s 18th inside the Octagon, tying him with Matt Hughes and Donald Cerrone for third on the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s all-time list. Only Michael Bisping and Georges St.

UFC on FOX 21: Demian Maia Says It'd Be 'Too Risky' to Sit Out Like Tyron Woodley

UFC on Fox 21 Prelims: Sam Alvey Batters Kevin Casey for Second-Round Stoppage

Observe a wild Sam Alvey in its natural habitat (knocking people into next week). — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) August 27, 2016 Sam Alvey ’s left hand puts smiles on faces other than his own. “Smilin’ Sam” disposed of former Resurrection Fighting Alliance champion Kevin Casey with second-round punches in their featured middleweight prelim at UFC on Fox 21 “Maia vs. Condit” on Saturday at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia. Casey (9-5-1, 1-3-1 UFC) wilted 4:56 into round two. Alvey (28-8, 5-3 UFC) picked his spots, remained patient and ate a few stiff jabs along the way. Casey ran out of gas near the conclusion of the first round and could not keep the Team Quest rep at a safe distance as a result. Alvey floored him twice with straight lefts. After the second knockdown, he unleashed on Casey with standing-to-ground punches until the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt turtled up in a fetal position and left referee Yves Lavigne no choice but to step in. Related » UFC Vancouver Round-by-Round Scoring Bochniak Edges ‘Ultimate Fighter’ Winner Barzola CES MMA veteran Kyle Bochniak leaned on repeated leg kicks and measured punching combinations in pocketing a contentious split decision over “The Ultimate Fighter Latin America” winner Enrique Barzola in their three-round undercard duel at 145 pounds.

Anthony Pettis submits Charles Oliveira in featherweight debut

Finally in the closing moments of the third round, Oliveira once again tried to drag the fight to the ground, but Pettis saw an opening and snatched the Brazilian's neck in a guillotine choke as they fell to the mat. Pettis wrenched up on the hold and a second later Oliveira was tapping out to signify the end of the fight.

Opinion: Age Ain’t Nothin’ but a Number

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Aged wisdom and youthful confidence have always been at odds with each other. It’s a reasonably understood, inversely proportional relationship; when the body is more adaptable and broadly capable, thoughtfulness is less necessary to success than it is when the body starts to deteriorate. You see this dynamic play out -- in sports and in life -- with such variability that it’s not certain which side of the spectrum is winning. Sure, experience is something you don’t know you never had until you finally get it, but at the same time, experience is something you’ll never get if you don’t tell your mind to shut up and get out of the body’s way. No amount of physical ability can substitute intelligence, and yet you can’t compile any number of sage aphorisms to land a standing backflip. In mixed martial arts, this tension manifests in interesting ways.

Beating the Odds: UFC on Fox 21

Jim Miller was thought by some to be a fading force in the Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight division. Perhaps talk of his demise was a little premature. Miller -- a +120 underdog, according to -- wound up on the right side of a split decision in his UFC on Fox 21 rematch with Joe Lauzon (-143) on Saturday at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia. All three cageside judges struck 29-28 scorecards: David Therien and Tony Weeks gave Miller the nod, while Dave Hagen sided with Lauzon. A former Ring of Combat and Cage Fury Fighting Championships titleholder, Miller staggered his counterpart with a stabbing left in the first round and targeted the body and head with punches, knees and occasional kicks. Round two followed a similar narrative, until Lauzon drove into top position after in ill-advised spinning attack from the New Jersey native and cut loose with some ground-and-pound. “The Ultimate Fighter 5” semifinalist had Miller on the ground twice in the third round, as he achieved full mount and sat back on a last-second armbar.

Ev Ting-Rob Lisita Headlines One Championship ‘Unbreakable Warriors’ on Sept. 2

Ev Ting will face Phuket Top Team’s Rob Lisita in the One Championship “Unbreakable Warriors” main event on Sept. 2 at Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Like all other featherweights under the One Championship banner, Ting and Lisita find themselves looking up at champion Marat Gafurov . Ting, 27, has rattled off five wins in six appearances, a May 2015 submission loss to Gafurov the only blemish. The Auckland MMA rep last competed at One Championship “Clash of Heroes” on Jan. 29, when he submitted Eric Kelly with a third-round guillotine choke. Ting has secured eight of his 11 career victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission. Lisita will enter the cage on a three-fight losing streak, having suffered back-to-back-to-back defeats to Gafurov, Kelly and Timofey Nastyukhin . The 33-year-old Australian remains the only man to finish “Lion” Takeshi Inoue , as he submitted the former Shooto champion with a bulldog choke in December 2013. Lisita boasts 11 finishes among his 14 pro wins. One Championship “Unbreakable Warriors” will also feature a featherweight battle pairing Peter Davis with Shannon Wiratchai , a women’s flyweight clash pitting April Osenio against Ann Osman and a middleweight encounter matching Gilberto Galvao with Tatsuya Mizuno .

Leaked Video Shows Maia And Condit Get Very Emotional During Commercial Break On FOX

During Saturday’s UFC on FOX 21 main event, Demian Maia made short work of former interim-champion Carlos Condit and when the broadcast went to commercial break the two fighters still had cameras on them.

Demian Maia Willing to Wait for Title Shot After Quick Submission of Condit

It was expected to be a back-and-forth battle that hinged on a mistake here or a slip-up there. The main event of UFC on Fox 21 was figured by most to likely go the full five rounds, but the duel between Demian Maia and Carlos Condit didn’t even last two full minutes. Maia wasted little time in dragging “The Natural Born Killer” to the canvas and though Condit was relaxed on the mat, the Brazilian’s boa constrictor-like fighting style allowed him to slither onto his foe’s back. It was a shot on the ground, Condit later revealed, that caused him to give up his back. Once he did, he was like a seal fighting off a great white shark. Maia, easily among the greatest jiu jitsu players on the planet, slinked his arms around Condit’s lower jaw and neck and forced the tapout moments later. It was the quickest loss of Condit’s career, one that hasn’t ended so abruptly since 2005 when Carlos Prater took him out in the first back in 2004. After the bout Condit revealed that he’s leaning toward retirement, the antithesis of what Maia wants, which is a crack at Tyron Woodley ’s UFC welterweight title.

UFC on Fox 21 ‘Maia vs. Condit’ Results: Play-by-Play & Updates

Jim Miller vs. Joe Lauzon Round 1 Lauzon comes forward at the start, backing up Miller to the fence, but the New Jerseyan catches Lauzon with a short left hand in the pocket. Lauzon catches a body kick and tries to trip Miller to the canvas, then opts for a heel hook attempt while dropping to guard. Both lightweights scramble back to their feet, where Lauzon reclaims his position in the center and Miller returns to the outside. Miller jabs his way back to the middle, but only for a moment, as Lauzon steps forward again with hard, straight right hands. Two minutes in, Lauzon instigates a clinch, but Miller breaks free with a knee to the body. Miller tries a spinning backfist and gets foot-swept to the canvas, leaving Lauzon on top in half guard with nearly half the round remaining. Lauzon postures up and tries to tee up Miller’s head for some grinding elbows, but Miller is defending well on the bottom. Miller pushes Lauzon back to full guard with 90 seconds remaining, then posts and escapes to his feet. Miller connects with a straight left, then a body-head combo that forces Lauzon to cover up.

After successful featherweight debut, Anthony Pettis wants to be UFC's third 2-division champion

“I had a rough patch – three fights in a row, I wasn’t used to that,” Pettis said at UFC on FOX 21’s post-fight news conference. “I had two losses my entire career then going three back-to-back, I had some soul searching to do. What drives me? What makes me want to do this? I went through a lot of stuff. I have to thank my family, my girlfriend. Everyone around me that just kept me focused and just made me keep pushing. We pushed through, we got a new division, a new goal – two division champ – and that’s what I’ve set out to do.”

Demian Maia chokes out Carlos Condit, calls for title shot

"Right now, I think, is six in a row. This guy's a former champion. This guy has been knocking out everybody. This is the guy who I watched his fight with Robbie Lawler and many people think he won, and I also think (he won), so for me he was the champion. I knew it would be a hard fight," Maia said.

Demian Maia hoping to leapfrog Stephen Thompson for title shot after UFC on FOX 21 win: 'I'm much older'

“I think (there’s a possibility of getting the next shot),” Maia told MMAjunkie. “I respect Thompson very much. He’s a great guy. Of course, I’m much older than him. So, if they can give me (the title shot) to me first, that would be great. If not, I hope they give it to him fast and I wait to see who wins the fight.”

Georges St-Pierre doesn't care if he fights for the UFC title or not

"What happened is that, he texted me and I don’t know him very well, but he texted me and he explained that he challenged me and he wanted to do it because he wanted to fight the best. He didn’t want me to take anything as disrespect, and I didn’t take it as disrespect. He’s a competitor and I said, “If you want to do it, let’s do it. I’m ready to fight you.” But it’s not my decision, the UFC is a business and the way it works, because UFC is a business, they have to choose what’s best for them," St-Pierre said.

Paddy Pimblett, Johnny Frachey to Vie for Vacant Cage Warriors Crown on Sept. 10

Fast-rising British prospect Paddy Pimblett will face Johnny Frachey for the vacant Cage Warriors Fighting Championship featherweight title in the Cage Warriors 78 headliner on Sept. 10 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England. In the co-main event, Chris Fishgold puts his lightweight championship on the line against Jason Ponet . Pimblett will enter the cage on a seven-fight winning streak. The 21-year-old Next Generation UK rep last fought at Cage Warriors 77 on July 8, when he submitted Teddy Violet with a second-round rear-naked choke. The once-beaten Pimblett has secured eight of his 11 career victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission. Frachey, 32, last appeared on March 12, when he submitted to a Luis Alberto Nogueira arm-triangle choke in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Akhmat Fight Show bantamweight grand prix. The loss snapped a run of five consecutive wins for the Frenchman. Frachey has been fighting professionally since 2003, having tested his skills against the likes of Tom Niinimaki , Mizuto Hirota , Yoshiro Maeda and David Baron .

‘Pitbull’ Freire Leg Injury Gives Benson Henderson TKO Victory in Bellator 160 Headliner

Benson Henderson was the beneficiary of unfortunate circumstances. A leg injury suffered by Patricio Freire resulted in a second-round technical knockout for Henderson in the Bellator 160 headliner on Friday at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Freire (25-4) indicated he could no longer continue 2:26 into round two, the Brazilian suffering the first non-decision defeat of his 29-fight career. Henderson (24-6) was ineffective, up until the anticlimactic stoppage. Freire stayed one step ahead of the former Ultimate Fighting Championship and World Extreme Cagefighting titleholder, slicing into him with occasional right hands and kicks to the legs and body. Midway through the second round, “Pitbull” clipped Henderson with a left hook, moved in and engaged at close quarters. Once the two separated, it became clear something was wrong. Freire turned his back and waved off the match. The win made Henderson the No. 1 contender for Bellator MMA lightweight champion Michael Chandler ’s crown. The two will lock horns on Nov.
